A look at Portable Document Format vulnerabilities

Portable Document Format (PDF) developed by Adobe Systems Inc. is a flexible and popular document distribution and delivery file format, and it is supported within various operating systems and devices. This article provides insight for some of the security issues within the format itself as well as an outlook of the vulnerabilities found from various versions of Adobe‘s own PDF viewer implementation.     

Security and privacy issues in the Portable Document Format

The Portable Document Format (PDF) was developed by Adobe in the early nineties and today it is the de-facto standard for electronic document exchange. It allows reliable reproductions of published materials on any platform and it is used by many governmental and educational institutions, as well as companies and individuals. PDF documents are also credited with being more secure than other document formats such as Microsoft Compound Document File Format or Rich Text Format.This paper investigates the Portable Document Format and shows that it is not immune from some privacy related issues that affect other popular document formats. From a PDF document, it is possible to retrieve any text or object previously deleted or modified, extract user information and perform some actions that may be used to violate user privacy. There are several applications of such an issue. One of them is relevant to the scientific community and it pertains to the ability to overcome the blind review process of a paper, revealing information related to the anonymous referee (e.g., the IP address of the referee).

基于ZIP文档格式的信息隐藏方法

研究ZIP文档的标准格式,提出一种基于ZIP文档格式的通用信息隐藏方法,通过删除ZIP文档中压缩源文件目录区的记录,修改ZIP文档的显示输出,达到隐藏信息的目的。提出一种基于Word 2007 ZIP文档格式的信息隐藏方法,通过替换压缩源文件数据区记录中本地文件头的扩展字段数据,以嵌入秘密信息。理论分析和实验结果表明,上述2种方法具有良好的隐蔽性。     

RTF文件格式在文档版面重构中的应用

OpenDocument Format: The Standard for Office Documents

For many years, when you used a word-processing application, your files were stored in a format that was fully understood only by the application you used. WordPerfect stored WordPerfect files, Microsoft Word stored Word files, and so on—and, while developers often included ad-hoc support for their competitors' formats, that was a hit-and-miss thing, vulnerable to changes in the proprietary formats. The same went for presentation slides and spreadsheets. We all have experience with the results of this, with the difficulties in exchanging files between different applications. OpenDocument Format (ODF) is an XML-based open standard file format for office documents such as these. ODF is application-, platform- and vendor-neutral, and thereby facilitates broad interoperability of office documents. In this issue's "Standards" department, IBM's Rob Weir, who worked on the ODF standard, will take us through some of the history and details of it.

Raw data extraction from electrocardiograms with Portable Document Format

During the last two decades there has been a thorough research and development of standards and protocols in order to cope with different electrocardiogram formats from heterogeneous acquisition systems. Despite the efforts of public and private consortiums on creating a standardized electrocardiogram (ECG) storage format, there is still not a single one. Indeed, there is also the necessity of access to raw data of the ECGs previously acquired. Most of these documents have been saved as Adobe PDF files, since for medical staff it is an easy format for later visualization. However, this format presents difficulties when trying to access original raw data for subsequent studies and signal analysis. In this manner, this paper presents an application that obtains plain numerical data from ECG files stored with PDF format. Data can also be exported to one of the most common file formats in existence, to be easily accessed thereafter.
