A novel configuration is reported for a tunable channel-selection filter that employs an arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG) multiplexer and optical switches. The filter requires only 2(√N-1) 1×2 switch elements to select one of N frequency-division-multiplexed (FDM) channels. How to connect arrayed-waveguide-grating (AWG) multiplexers in cascade is discussed with the goal of equalizing the loss imbalance among frequency-division-multiplexed (FDM) channels. This paper proposes to average the FDM-channel loss over the cascaded multiplexers by shifting port connections between each adjacent multiplexer. A simulation predicts that, in a cascade of M periodic N×N multiplexers, shifting the connections by N/M reduces the loss imbalance from MΔα to Δα/M where Δα [dB] denotes the loss imbalance per multiplexer. This improvement will extend the cascadable node number in all-optical FDM networks. The prediction is confirmed experimentally in an optical add-drop filter (M=2) constructed with a silica-based AWG 16×16 multiplexer; the largest loss difference among 15 FDM channels is reduced from 5.0 dB to 1.5 dB. This paper also reports that imperfect multiplexer periodicity due to waveguide dispersion restricts the equalizable frequency bandwidth to less than several free spectral ranges (FSR's)  相似文献

We present a basic configuration of an unique integrated-optic arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG) multiplexer with loop-back optical paths and demonstrate an add-drop multiplexer (ADM), a network access terminal, and a wavelength channel selector for dense-WDM ring or bus networks, as three useful examples of its attractive applications. A key device in these components is a silica-glass based 1.55 μm polarization-insensitive 32×32 AWG multiplexer chip with 0.8 nm channel spacing which is fabricated using planar lightwave circuit (PLC) technologies. Fine operation in their new functional components is achieved by using the AWG multiplexer module having low insertion loss of 3.9 dB and low interchannel crosstalk of less than -28 dB  相似文献

Two novel configurations for digitally tunable optical filters based on arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG) multiplexers are described in detail with emphasis on the connection of the AWG multiplexer and optical switches. Performance comparisons show that conventional configurations are disadvantaged by the switch size required and loss imbalance among the optical frequency-division-multiplexed (FDM) channels; the proposed configurations require only O(√(N)) switch elements to select one of N FDM channels, and the loss imbalance is lower by up to 75% in decibel  相似文献

A novel 1×4 coupler multiplexer permutation switch (CMPS) is proposed for applications in wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) optical networks. The structure of the CMPS integrates the multiplexing and switching functions into a single compact device. It consists of a single-mode/multimode-waveguide grating-assisted, backward-coupler multiplexer followed by a 1×4 digital optical switch (DOS). The specific design uses an InP-based 1×4 CMPS with InGaAsP-InP multiple-quantum-well (MQW) DOS. The calculated values of crosstalk for the coupler multiplexer and the DOS are <-25 dB and -23 dB, respectively, giving an overall crosstalk <-21 dB for channel bandwidths of 10-13 GHz. The device channels are unequally spaced, which reduces unwanted four-wave mixing (FWM), but are fitted to the ITU standard wavelength grid  相似文献

A client-configurable optical add/drop multiplexer (OADM) is demonstrated using a micromachined 8×6 matrix switch. The matrix switch can be configured to add/drop any of the eight input channels from/to any of the six add/drop ports. For the switching fabric, the insertion loss is 2~3 dB for the dropped channels and 8~9 dB for the added channels by using the backsides of the micromirror switches. The switching extinction ratio is over 40 dB, the crosstalk between channels is less than -40 dB, and they are equipment-limited in this experiment  相似文献

A very large channel-count arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) filter with more than 1000 channels is described. It was achieved by cascading a 1-THz-spaced flat-top 1×10 AWG as a primary filter and ten 10-GHz-spaced 1×160 AWGs as secondary filters in a tandem configuration. The impact of crosstalk in an arrayed-waveguide N×N wavelength multiplexer is investigated precisely in relation to its application to wavelength-routing N×N all optical networks. In such systems multiple crosstalk light which has the same wavelength as the signal results in signal-crosstalk beat noise. We confirm that the noise is Gaussian and obtain the relation between crosstalk and power penalty. It is shown that the crosstalk must be less than -38 dB for a 16×16 system to keep the power penalty below 1 dB at a bit error rate of 10-9  相似文献

By interconnecting two star couplers with a waveguide grating, the authors built a monolithic 15×15 multiplexer on InP. The grating order of 148 gives a free spectral range of 10.5 nm (1.3 THz) and a channel spacing of 0.7 nm (87 GHz) at 1550 nm wavelength. A crosstalk between adjacent channels of less than 18 dB and a residual crosstalk of less than 25 dB were obtained. The on-chip insertion loss is typically 2-4 dB  相似文献

This paper proposes a cascade-connected arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG) as a solution to the problem of crosstalk accumulation in a large-scale AWG multiplexer/demultiplexer (MUX/DEMUX) and demonstrates a 64-channel cascaded AWG module with a very low background crosstalk of less than -80 dB and a total crosstalk of about -34 dB. In this paper, the authors densely integrate 64 additional compactly designed crosstalk-suppressing AWGs whose bandwidths were carefully optimized and directly attach them to a conventional 64-channel AWG. Consequently, in addition to a very low crosstalk, a low insertion loss and a compact size without passband shape distortion are achieved with this module. Based on the performance of the cascaded AWG module, it is then estimated that it is possible to realize a 1000-channel AWG MUX/DEMUX that is free from the problem of crosstalk accumulation.  相似文献

The impact of crosstalk in an arrayed-waveguide (AWG) router on the performance of an N-channel optical add-drop multiplexer (OADM), with m add/drop channels and n-pass channels is theoretically investigated. A single arrayed-waveguide router is simultaneously used for multiplexing and demultiplexing. This results in crosstalk not only from the incoming channels, but from the outgoing channels as well. We show that the performance of the OADM degrades as either N or m are increased, suggesting that the number of channels in a network based on OADM's is limited by crosstalk in the AWG router. When an optical filter is added at the output of the OADM the digital signal-to-noise ratio Q is independent of N and m, and within a few tenths of a decibel of the perfect filtering case  相似文献

A diversity of switching and power-distribution functions in coupled multi-waveguide arrays is discussed and demonstrated. Functionality is achieved by varying the effective index in each waveguide independently by means of the electro-optic effect. The splitting and switching functions are attained by the use of a multi-variable optimization procedure. Specifically we demonstrate [1×2] and [1×5] routing and power division and [2×2] cross-connection. Polarization diversity and polarization-independent switching are attained using a special crystal orientation and electrode configuration. Single-polarization routing was measured in most cases, with crosstalk figures of the order of - 15 dB. Polarization-independent switching was achieved with crosstalk of less than - 19 dB for a three-waveguide [1× ] switch. By addition of dummy guides, a polarization-independent [2×2] cross-connection function could be attained with crosstalk figures better than -30 dB  相似文献

设计并制作了基于绝缘体上硅(SOI)材料的1×16阵列波导光栅(AWG).该AWG器件的中心波长为1 550 nm,信道间隔为200 GHz,采用了脊型波导结构.首先确定了波导的结构尺寸以保证单模传输,并利用束传播法(BPM)模拟了波导间隔、弯曲半径和锥形波导长度等参数对器件性能的影响,对器件结构进行了优化,同时也利用BPM方法模拟了器件的传输谱.模拟结果显示:器件的最小信道损耗为4.64 dB,串扰小于-30 dB.根据优化的器件结构,通过光刻等半导体工艺制作了AWG,经测试得到AWG器件的损耗为4.52~8.1 dB,串扰为17~20 dB,能够实现良好的波分复用/解复用功能.  相似文献

The crosstalk in arrayed-waveguide grating multiplexers with a channel spacing of 10 GHz is reduced by compensating for the phase errors after fabrication. We used the thermooptic effect realized with a thin-film heater and the photoelastic effect obtained with amorphous silicon film, respectively, for dynamic and static phase-error compensation. These two methods were applied to confirm the principle and to realize a stable, stand-alone device, respectively. We have achieved a crosstalk of less than -35 dB for the TE polarization mode in a 16×16, 10 GHz-spacing arrayed-waveguide grating by using these two phase-error compensation techniques. Static phase-error compensation results in a stable multiplexer which features a low crosstalk of less than -30 dB for one of the two polarization modes of all the channels without any external control equipment  相似文献

The authors report the measured performance of an integrated N*N multiplexer fabricated using SiO/sub 2//Si waveguides. The insertion loss for N=7 was typically lower than 2.5 dB, and crosstalk was less than -25 dB. The multiplexer response is approximately periodic. In each period the multiplexer accepts, from each input waveguide, a total of N channels, and it efficiently transmits each channel to a particular output port. Similarly, each output port receives N channels, one from each input port. Thus, the total number of channels that can be transmitted simultaneously is N/sup 2/, which requires N optical frequencies.<>  相似文献
