Now that consumers expect everything they buy to be both functional and easy to use, designers need to think seriously about the pleasure their products bring to users. The artefacts and products with which we surround ourselves are potential sources of pleasure. They should be designed with a view to how they can provide pleasure to those who use and experience them. This requires a rich understanding of users, an approach to design that sees products not just as tools but as `living objects'. Moving beyond usability, to take a holistic pleasure-based approach, can facilitate the creation of useful usable and pleasurable products that will delight the customer. A modeling approach for incorporating a two-port network with S-parameters in the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is reported. The proposed method utilizes the time-domain Y-parameters to describe the network characteristics, and incorporates the Y-parameters into the FDTD algorithm. The generalized pencil-of-function technique is applied to improve the memory efficiency of this algorithm by generating a complex exponential series for the Y-parameters and using recursive convolution in the FDTD updating equations. A modeling example is given, which shows that this approach is effective and accurate. A persisting major challenge for optical network operators is to meet the various availability requirements of the different subscribed services through the deployment of effective protection strategies. Priority-aware shared protection is a promising scheme that has been proposed in the open literature as a potential approach to tackling this challenge. However, the priority-aware protection strategy is rigid in the sense that it privileges the high priority connections regardless of the low priority ones. Hence, this letter proposes to improve priority-aware protection by introducing the mutation probability parameter. This parameter expresses the likelihood that a highpriority connection be relegated temporarily to a lower priority level during recovery. In this way, the mutation-based protection strategy offers optical operators the possibility to increase the availability of their low-priority clients without violating the availability requirements of their high-priority ones. Performance of this novel protection strategy is analyzed in this letter by precisely calculating the connection availabilities resulting from its deployment. 相似文献

The universal mobile telecommunication system (UMTS) will implement terminal mobility and a form of personal mobility limited to UMTS. The most essential procedures to provide this are related to user registration, location management, handover and security. These mobility procedures are specified using specific functional models. In these models, the required functions are identified and the distribution of the functions in the network is anticipated. In a next step, the specific models are mapped onto a generic functional model. This generic model can be considered as the integration and unification of the specific models. Its structure reflects two important implementation aspects. First, the integration of UMTS into future networks for fixed telecommunications is anticipated. The performance in terms of signal-to-interference ratio (SIR), teletraffic, and spectral efficiency of a combined macrocellular and microcellular network is investigated when either both types of cells share the same channel set, or when the channel set is partitioned between the macrocells and the microcells. The analysis is for time-division multiple access (TDMA) with frequency hopping, power control, and discontinuous transmission, and the radio channel is composed of an inverse fourth-power path loss law with log-normal fading. We commence by introducing a single microcell into a hexagonal cluster of macrocells before considering clustered microcells. Both omnidirectional and sectorized cells are examined. We find that high reuse factors are required when channel sharing is employed. When channel partitioning is used, no co-channel interference occurs between the microcells and the macrocells allowing them to be planned independently. The reuse factors in the microcells and macrocells therefore do not need to be increased beyond conventional values. The outcome is that by opting for channel partitioning, the improvement in spectral efficiency compared to channel sharing is two to three times greater 相似文献
