46 preschoolers (aged 3 yrs to 4 yrs 2 mo) and 23 college students were asked to make attributions of intentionality to story characters and to make a moral judgment of the character. Positive and negative intended effects were distinguished from unintended ones by the adults as well as by the children. Also, children's moral judgments were differentiated by the level of foreseeability of the effected outcome. Under unforeseeable outcome conditions, actors with negative motives were judged to be less blameworthy, and actors with positive motives less praiseworthy, than their counterparts who brought about foreseeable outcomes. Differences between the judgments of children and adults are discussed, as are implications for research on the development of social causality concepts. The purpose of this study was to bring together research on youth’s developing life stories and research on ethnic variations in educational experiences by exploring diverse students’ narratives of ethnicity-related college experiences. A total of 280 college students attending a public university in California recounted a story about a time in which they felt their ethnicity played a role in the academic experiences. Six main themes were identified among the event narratives: learning about culture, sharing culture, experience of prejudice, difficult dialogues, awareness of diversity, and support and connection. The frequency of these themes varied by ethnic group, which suggests that college students from different ethnic backgrounds face different issues pertaining to the intersection of ethnicity and academics and thus face unique experiences and challenges that must be integrated into their life stories. Assessed Piagetian and moral stages in 117 female and 111 male college students prior to a moral education program. As hypothesized, Ss who had not reached their highest possible stage of moral development given the limits set by their stage of Piagetian development changed significantly more than Ss who had reached their moral potentiality. Results are consistent with L. Kohlberg's (1977) assumption that Piagetian stage sets a limit or ceiling on moral development, and they further suggest that the relationship between Piagetian and moral stages should be considered in planning moral education programs. This study examined the incremental validity of the Defining Issues Test (DIT), a test purporting to measure moral reasoning ability relative to verbal ability and other major markers of the construct of general intelligence (g) . Across 2 independent studies of intellectually precocious adolescents (top 0.5%), results obtained with the DIT revealed that gifted individuals earned significantly higher moral reasoning scores than did their average-ability peers; they also scored higher than college freshmen, who were 4 to 5 years older. The relative standing of the intellectually gifted adolescents on moral reasoning, however, appears to be due to their superior level of verbal ability as opposed to any of a number of the other psychological variables examined here. The hypothesis that the DIT is conceptually distinct from conventional measures of verbal ability was not confirmed. Investigators conducting subsequent studies involving the assessment of moral reasoning are advised to incorporate measures of verbal ability into their designs, thereby enabling them to ascertain whether moral reasoning measures are indeed capturing systematic sources of individual differences distinct from verbal ability.… (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Much attention has been focused on the importance of reading moral stories to children (e.g., W. Bennett, 1993). Although research on general discourse comprehension is flourishing, little attention has been given to how moral discourse is understood by individuals; that is, what affects an individual's comprehension of a moral text? Eighth-grade and college students read and recalled four complex moral narratives in which moral arguments at different Kohlbergian stages were embedded. Participants then took the Defining Issues Test (DIT), a measure of moral judgment development. Those with higher reasoning scores on the DIT reconstructed more high-stage moral arguments during recall, including adding high-stage moral reasoning that was not in the original text. Significant age-level differences in cumulative moral judgment concepts were also found. Prior moral knowledge affected the comprehension of complex moral narratives. Tested 207 male graduating college seniors enrolled in the schools of engineering and business and actively engaged in college placement activities before and after a placement process to measure perceptions of their chosen occupation's stereotype. Concurrently 186 practicing professional engineers and businessmen were tested to determine their respective occupational stereotypes. An adjective association instrument was used to assess stereotype. It was hypothesized that business students experience a shift in perceptions of their chosen occupation's stereotype during the college placement process while similar engineering students do not. Results indicate that business students, engineering students, professional engineers, and businessmen could individually identify unique occupational stereotypes. A qualitative change in the business students' perception of the business occupational stereotype was found while engineering students did not experience any significant change.
