Behavioral reactions to a nearby human were recorded in male Japanese quail of two lines selected for reduced (LS; low stress) or exaggerated (HS; high stress) plasma corticosterone (B) response to brief mechanical immobilization. Their adrenocortical responses to one of three treatments were then examined. These were: no human disturbance (undisturbed controls, CON), capture and return to the home cage before recapture and bleeding after 5 min (CR), or capture and manual restraint for 5 min before blood sampling (CREST). Quail of the HS line showed more fear-related behavior (crouching, escape) and avoidance of the experimenter than did their LS counterparts. Plasma B concentrations were markedly elevated following each capture treatment (CREST > CR) and the response appeared to be more pronounced in quail of the HS than the LS line. These findings indicate that HS quail perceived human contact to be more aversive than did those of the LS line. Avoidance scores and the adrenocortical responses to capture were positively correlated within individual birds. Therefore, simple behavioral tests of fear may have predictive value concerning physiological responsiveness to stressful stimulation.  相似文献

This paper analyzes the interaction between resistance to free radicals, development under starvation conditions, sex, and its consequences to the lifespan of Drosophila melanogaster populations selected for developmental time and longevity. Our data suggest that the interaction between these physiological and environmental parameters is modulated largely by the pre-imaginal developmental time, since the response to selection for longevity extremes depends strongly on the previous selection for developmental time extremes.  相似文献

100 male Japanese quail, from lines bidirectionally selected for high and low mating frequency and from a random-bred base population, were observed in an ontogenetic study of aggressive/sexual behavior. Ss were reared in sex-intermingled flocks until 28 days of age, at which time half of the Ss from each line were housed as all-male flocks and half were transferred to individual cages. At 41 days of age, individually caged Ss exhibited mounting behavior to win encounters with other Ss. By 45 days, Ss from the high and control lines exhibited significantly more aggressive sexual behavior than those from the low lines. Line?×?Rearing Experience interactions for mounting behavior at 45 and 56 days of age were due to the individually caged high- and control-line Ss' winning encounters by mounts; those maintained in flocks rarely mounted. Although some low-line Ss won encounters by mounts, the occurrence of this behavior was infrequent. Ss maintained in flocks were placed in individual cages at 57 days of age. When these Ss and those housed in individual cages from 28 days of age were compared at 84 days of age and older, the Line?×?Rearing Experience interaction observed previously disappeared, and only differences among genetic lines were evident. This study tests the hypothesis that increased levels of plasma lipids can accelerate accumulation of myocardial triacylglycerols in post-ischemic but viable myocardium. Two groups of dogs underwent 90 min of left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) occlusion followed by 240 min of reperfusion. The first group of saline-treated dogs (n = 7) had physiological levels of plasma lipids during reperfusion: a second group treated with Liposyn and heparin (n = 5) experienced increased plasma lipids during reperfusion. The transmural content of triacylglycerols was determined during ischemia and reperfusion using 1H NMR one-dimensional chemical shift imaging (1D CSI), and at the end of reperfusion using Oil Red-O staining and chemical assay. TTC staining was used to identify the extent of irreversibly injured myocardium. Subepicardial and plasma triacylglycerol content, measured both by 1D CSI and chemically, did not change during reperfusion in saline-treated dogs. Infusing dogs with Liposyn and heparin for 90 min during reperfusion transiently elevated their plasma triacylglycerols, which returned to normal levels following Liposyn wash-out. During Liposyn wash-out, myocardial triacylglycerols measured by 1D CSI preferentially increased in the subepicardium of area-at-risk myocardium (P < 0.05). Triacylglycerol content, measured chemically, also increased in area-at-risk compared to non-ischemic subepicardium (P < 0.001). Significant endocardial damage occurred in both groups, but elevated levels of plasma lipids did not increase the size of the area-at-risk. Therefore, elevated plasma lipids caused a preferential accumulation of triacylglycerols in area-at-risk myocardium during reperfusion without exacerbating irreversible ischemic injury. These results are consistent with either inhibited fatty acid oxidation or mis-matched fatty acid extraction and oxidation in area-at-risk myocardium.  相似文献

The levels of 5alpha-androstenone and testosterone in peripheral plasma and 5alpha-androstenone in fat collected from 18 boars selected according to thickness of back fat and rate of gain were evaluated. Sampling was started when the animals were about 100 days of age and samples were collected every 14 days until the boars were about 240 days old. The steroid profiles varied considerably between boars, although an increase in steroid levels was found in most animals with the onset of adolescence. The regression line for the level of 5alpha-androstenone in fat and the age of the animals in days was found to be y = 0.02x-1-31. High coefficients of correlation were found between the concentration of 5alpha-androstenone in peripheral plasma and fat (r = 0-78) and between levels of 5alpha-androstenone and testosterone in peripheral plasma (r = 0-64). Levels of 5alpha-androstenone in peripheral plasma above about 15 ng/ml were usually accompanied by a heavy accumulation of 5alpha-androstenone in adipose tissue. The use of four of the boars for mating resulted in increased steroid levels in peripheral plasma and fat. Significantly higher levels of 5alpha-androstenone and testosterone were found in the peripheral plasma of boars selected for fatness and a low rate of gain than in boars selected for low back-fat thickness and a high rate of gain.  相似文献
