The neuropsychological literature on 3-D spatial interactions is integrated using a model of 4 major behavioral realms: (a) peripersonal (visuomotor operations in near-body space), (b) focal extrapersonal (visual search and object recognition), (c) action extrapersonal (orienting in topographically defined space), and (d) ambient extrapersonal (orienting in earth-fixed space). Each is associated with a distinct cortical network: dorsolateral peripersonal, predominantly ventrolateral focal-extrapersonal, predominantly ventromedial action-extrapersonal, and predominantly dorsomedial ambient-extrapersonal systems. Interactions in 3-D space are also regulated neurochemically with dopaminergic and cholinergic excitation associated with extrapersonal activation and noradrenergic and serotonergic excitation associated with peripersonal activation. This model can help explain the 3-D imbalances in prominant neuropsychological disorders. 相似文献

This study explored whether hand location affected spatial attention. The authors used a visual covert-orienting paradigm to examine whether spatial attention mechanisms--location prioritization and shifting attention--were supported by bimodal, hand-centered representations of space. Placing 1 hand next to a target location, participants detected visual targets following highly predictive visual cues. There was no a priori reason for the hand to influence task performance unless hand presence influenced attention. Results showed that target detection near the hand was facilitated relative to detection away from the hand, regardless of cue validity. Similar facilitation was found with only proprioceptive or visual hand location information but not with arbitrary visual anchors or distant targets. The influence of spatial attention on lexical decisions to lateralized target letter-strings appearing either along with a distractor (Experiment 1) or in an otherwise empty field (Experiments 2–6) was examined. Attentional orienting was controlled by peripheral (Experiments 1, 2, 3, and 6) and central (Experiments 4–5) cuing methods. Manipulations of spatial attention, including cue validity and cue–target stimulus onset asynchrony, were combined with manipulations of word frequency in Experiments 3-6. All the attentional manipulations were effective, but they did not modify the right visual field advantage in word performance, In addition, the attentional effects did not interact with either the presence or absence of distractors or with stimulus familiarity. Implications of these results regarding the influence of spatial attention (the posterior attention system) on word processing are discussed. The classic theory of spatial attention hypothesized 2 modes, voluntary and involuntary. Folk, Remington, and Johnston (1992) reported that even involuntary attention capture by stimuli requires a match between stimulus properties and what the observer is looking for. This surprising conclusion has been confirmed by many subsequent studies. In these studies, however, the observer typically looks for the same property throughout an entire session. Real-world behavior, in contrast, often requires frequent shifts in attentional set. The present study examined whether such shifts weaken attentional settings, allowing task-irrelevant objects to capture attention. Surprisingly, fluctuating control settings did not increase vulnerability to capture by salient stimuli (color singletons and abrupt onsets). We conclude that the attention control system is remarkably flexible, able to rapidly and fully adopt new settings and abandon old settings. Attentional control theory is an approach to anxiety and cognition representing a major development of Eysenck and Calvo's (1992) processing efficiency theory. It is assumed that anxiety impairs efficient functioning of the goal-directed attentional system and increases the extent to which processing is influenced by the stimulus-driven attentional system. In addition to decreasing attentional control, anxiety increases attention to threat-related stimuli. Adverse effects of anxiety on processing efficiency depend on two central executive functions involving attentional control: inhibition and shifting. However, anxiety may not impair performance effectiveness (quality of performance) when it leads to the use of compensatory strategies (e.g., enhanced effort; increased use of processing resources). Objective: Attentional control, the ability to maintain goal-directedness in the face of distraction, has been shown to decline in normal aging (NA) and Alzheimer's disease (AD), yet the nature and extent of deficits is under debate. This study investigated attentional control in NA and AD compared to healthy young adults in several tasks such as setting, suppressing, switching, and preparing attention. Method: Fifty-two participants (17 AD, 17 NA, and 18 young participants) underwent the Tower of London, the Zoo map test, the Stroop test, letter verbal fluency, a computerized version of the Rule shift cards tests, the Trail making test, the Plus-minus test, and a reaction time task with variable preparatory intervals. Results: Analyses of variance showed that NA as compared to young participants were impaired in the Tower of London, the Stroop test, and the Rule shift cards tests. AD as compared to NA participants were impaired in all tests except the Stroop test. Principal component analysis in young adults confirmed the modularity of attentional tasks, which was reduced in NA and AD participants. Principal component analysis in all populations showed a decline of attentional control with NA and AD regardless of the tasks, with an increase in between-participants variability only between young and NA participants. Conclusions: Attentional control dysfunction is different in NA and AD: NA affects suppressing attention, switching attention for unpredictable but not predictable events, and preparing attention for unpredictable events, whereas AD affects setting, suppressing, switching, and preparing attention with less specificity. Temperament research has highlighted the importance of attentional control in both emotion regulation and as a predictor of psychopathology. Enhanced susceptibility to emotional distraction is a key feature of mood disturbance. Whereas many studies have examined the influence of individual differences in anxiety on the disruptive effects of emotional distractors, individual differences in attentional control have been largely neglected. Here we examine, within healthy volunteers, the relative contributions of individual differences in self-reported anxiety and attentional control to distractibility caused by emotional or neutral faces distractors occurring prior to neutral face targets during rapid serial visual presentation. Participants with good attentional control were less affected by both neutral and emotional distractors than participants with poorer attentional control. More pronounced distraction deficits were seen for emotional relative to neutral distractors in individuals with poor attentional control. In contrast state anxiety was not associated with increased emotional distraction. In 2 experiments, participants completed both an attentional control battery (OSPAN, antisaccade, and Stroop tasks) and a modified semantic priming task. The priming task measured relatedness proportion (RP) effects within subjects, with the color of the prime indicating the probability that the to-be-named target would be related. In Experiment 2, participants were cued before each trial with the probability of a related target. Stimulus onset asynchronies traditionally thought to tap automatic processing (267 ms) versus controlled processing (1,240 ms) were used. Across experiments, principal component analysis on the battery revealed a general attentional control component. Moreover, the RP effect increased linearly with attentional control in both experiments. It is concluded that RP effects produced in this paradigm depend purely upon the effortful process of expectancy generation, which renders them sensitive to individual differences in attentional control. In 2 experiments, observers (n?=?17) searched for a misaligned vertex in displays depicting 1 or more two-dimensional (2-D), three-dimensional (3-D), and quasi-3-D objects that were drawn with unconnected vertices. Serial search functions were obtained for all 3 conditions, even after much practice. In addition, search among the 2-D objects was more efficient than search among either 3-D or quasi-3-D objects, which did not differ after practice. This finding suggests that differences in depicted dimensionality cannot explain the difference in performance between the 2-D and 3-D conditions, but differences in stimulus complexity can. Further, after practice with the 2-D displays, observers could detect a misaligned vertex as rapidly among 2 objects as they could with 1-object displays. These findings have implications for models of object recognition that assign a critical role to vertices in early vision, as well as the notion that mechanisms underlying preattentive processing may differ from those underlying the automaticity of processing that develops with practice. Four experiments investigated whether a highly salient color singleton can be ignored during serial search. Observers searched for a target letter among nontarget letters and were instructed to ignore an irrelevant, highly salient color singleton that was either compatible or incompatible with the response to the target letter. The results indicate that it was possible to prevent attentional capture by the irrelevant singleton only when both the target and the distractor color were known. When either the color of the target or the color of the to-be-ignored singleton were varied over trials, the irrelevant singleton captured attention. The ability to selectively filter singleton distractors during serial search depends on the presence of an attentional set for a specific feature value of both target and distractor. Prior to the presentation of a test stimulus, subjects' attentional state was either narrowly focused on a particular location or broadly spread over a large spatial region. In previous studies, it was found that broadly spread attention enhances the sensitivity of relatively large spatial filters (increasing the perceiver's spatial scale), thereby diminishing spatial resolution and enhancing sensitivity to global stimulus structure. In this study it is shown that attentional spread also affects the self-organization of unidirectional versus oscillatory motion patterns for the directionally ambiguous, counterphase presentation of rows of evenly-spaced visual elements (lines segments; dots); i.e. qualitatively different motion patterns can be formed for the same stimulus at different spatial scales. Although the degree to which attention is spread along a spatial axis can be controlled by the perceiver, the effects of spread attention are not limited to a single axis. These results, as well as previously observed effects of attentional spread on spatial resolution, are accounted for by a neural model involving large, foveally-centered receptive fields with co-operatively interacting subunits (probably at the level of MST or higher). 相似文献

Observers often miss the 2nd of 2 visual targets (first target [T1] and second target [T2]) when these targets are presented closely in time; the attentional blink (AB). The authors hypothesized that the AB occurs because the attentional response to T2 is delayed by T1 processing, causing T2 to lose a competition for attention to the item that follows it. The authors investigated this hypothesis by determining whether the AB is attenuated when T2 is precued. The results from 4 experiments showed that the duration and magnitude of the AB were substantially reduced when T2 was precued. The observed improvement in T2 report did not occur at the expense of T1 report, suggesting that processing of T1 was already completed or was at least protected when the cue was presented. The authors conclude that, during the AB, there is a delay between detection and the selection of target candidates for consolidation in short-term memory. This study investigates how mechanisms for amplifying 2-D motion contrast influence the assignment of 3-D depth values. The authors found that the direction of movement of a random-dot conveyor belt strongly inclined observers to report that the front surface of a superimposed, transparent, rotating, random-dot sphere moved in a direction opposite to the belt. This motion-contrast effect was direction selective and demonstrated substantial spatial integration. Varying the stereo depth of the belt did not compromise the main effect, precluding a mechanical interpretation (sphere rolling belt). Varying the speed of the surfaces of the sphere also did not greatly affect the interpretation of rotation direction. These results suggest that 2-D center-surround interactions influence 3-D depth assignment by differentially modulating the strength of response to the moving surfaces of an object (their prominence) without affecting featural specificity. This study was motivated by the fact that unilateral neglect, an impediment to progress in patient rehabilitation, is often reported to occur in a wider area of space than that usually assessed in clinical settings. Neglect within "grasping space" (Halligan & Marshall, 1991; Kolb & Whishaw, 1990) was assessed via two search tasks: one in which search was guided by visual information and the other in which search was guided by tactile information. The performance of 10 left brain-damaged patients (LBD) and 20 right brain-damaged patients, 10 of whom showed left visual neglect (RBD+) while 10 did not (RBD-), was compared with that of age-matched controls. The visual search task confirmed the clinical diagnoses of unilateral visual neglect. On the tactile test, both RBD groups showed reduced search within the left hemispace, although this was a particularly strong feature of the performance of the RBD+ patients. Furthermore, this reduced leftwards exploration in RBD+ patients was associated with an increased frequency of repetitions made within the right hemispace, as had also been noted in some of these patients on conventional visual star cancellation. Examined the relation between the cognitive style construct of field dependence–independence (FDI) and 2 processing components. These components, control of linguistic processing and analysis of knowledge, have been identified in previous research as part of metalinguistic ability. Children between the ages of 7 and 9 years were given a number of metalinguistic tasks and 2 measures of FDI. The results showed a common basis for FDI and metalinguistic problems requiring high levels of control but not for FDI and metalinguistic problems requiring high levels of analysis. These results shed light on the underlying cognitive basis of metalinguistic performance and established the role for 1 of the 2 processing components across domains. The hypothesis that representation of projective shape is preattentive whereas representation of objective shape in 3-dimensional space requires allocation of attention was tested in 2 visual search and 2 precuing experiments. In the visual search experiments, the slope for projective shape search was expected to approach 0 and that for objective shape search was expected to be a positive monotonic function of set size. In the precuing experiments, the effects of precuing were expected to be largely limited to the task requiring representation of objective shape. The overall pattern of results conformed to expectations. The findings are interpreted in the context of a model of shape-at-a-slant processing set out by W. Epstein and B. Two studies examined potential age-related differences in attentional capture. Subjects were instructed to move their eyes as quickly as possible to a color singleton target and to identify a small letter located inside it. On half the trials, a new stimulus (i.e., a sudden onset) appeared simultaneously with the presentation of the color singleton target. The onset was always a task-irrelevant distractor. Response times were lengthened, for both young and old adults, whenever an onset distractor appeared, despite the fact that Ss reported being unaware of the appearance of the abrupt onset. Eye scan strategies were also disrupted by the appearance of the onset distractors. On about 40% of the trials on which an onset appeared, Ss made an eye movement to the task-irrelevant onset before moving their eyes to the target. Fixations close to the onset were brief, suggesting parallel programming of a reflexive eye movement to the onset and goal-directed eye movement to the target. Whether Ss can attend to physical dimensions of objects without access to semantic information about them was examined. Ss decided which of 2 laterally presented pictures, a target and a distractor, had the same orientation (Exp 1), size (Exp 2), luminance (Exp 3), or color (Exp 4) as a reference picture. In each experiment, the matching stimuli were either physically identical, semantically related, or semantically unrelated. The reference stimulus and the distractor were either semantically related or unrelated. When matching was based on orientation or on size, performance was facilitated when the matching stimuli were semantically related, and it was disrupted when the distractor was semantically related to the reference stimulus. Semantic effects were eliminated when matching was based on luminance or color. 3-D freehand ultrasound is a new imaging technique that is rapidly finding clinical applications. A position-sensing device is attached to a conventional ultrasound probe so that, as B-scans are acquired, they can be labelled with their relative positions and orientations. This allows a 3-D data set to be constructed from the B-scans. A key requirement of all freehand imaging systems is calibration; that is, determining the position and orientation of the B-scan with respect to the position sensor. This is typically a lengthy and tedious process that may need repeating every time a sensor is mounted on a probe. This paper describes a new calibration technique that takes only a few minutes to perform and produces results that compare favourably (in terms of both accuracy and precision) with previously published alternatives. 相似文献

To evaluate the usefulness of transendoscopic sonography we studied two new sono probes 6 F in diameter in 17 fresh specimens. We saw precise imaging of well-known anatomical structures and also gained an additional dimension in endoscopy, as the sono adds to the endo-view a transverse scan like a mini-CT at the tip of the probe. We also experienced the navigation characteristic of this imaging technique, both in real time and on line. Some 3-D reconstructions of the ventricular system were examined. The equipment has been used in clinical practice and must now be adapted for neurosurgery. 相似文献
