This paper investigates the performance of a new Turbo Trellis Coded Modulation scheme over correlated flat fading channels with channel interleaving. The novelty of the scheme is based on the application of a new modified transition metric incorporated in the symbol-by-symbol MAP algorithm. We consider frequency non-selective, slow Rayleigh fading channels. Extensive simulation results together with EXIT chart analysis show that the proposed scheme achieves better performance compared to the conventional transition metric when channel state information is not available at the decoder. Kostas V. Koutsouvelis was born in Thessaloniki, Greece, on July 16,1970. He received the degree Diploma in Electrical Engineering from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece in 1996 and the Master degree in Satellite Communications Engineering from University of Surrey in 1997. From 1998 to 2003 he was involved in the development of V5.2 interface as a senior software designer in Intracom plc. In 2004 joined the research and development division of Hellenic Telecommunication Organization (OTE) and his also PhD candidate at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki working with Turbo codes and Turbo Coded Modulation. Christos E. Dimakiswasborn in Serres, Greece, on July 27, 1955.He received the degree Diploma in Electrical Engineering from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, in 1980. Working in the satellite communications and in the error correcting coding area he received his PhD degree in digital telecommunications from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, in 1994. In 1980 he joined the Department of Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications Division of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki as a research fellow. Since 1997 he is a lecturer of digital communications at the same University. Presently, his research interests include digital modulations, coding theory, satellite and mobile communications and system simulation. Stamatis S. Kouris was born in Corfu, Greece. He received the degree of Doctor Engineer in Electrical Engineering from the University of Rome, Italy and the Diploma of Specialization in Telecommunications of the Instituto Superiore, University of Rome, in 1960 and 1963 respectively. In 1971 he was awarded the PhD Degree of the University of Edinburgh, UK. In the 1974 he was awarded a specialization Diploma in administration from the University of Pomona CA, USA. He is a member of the Technical Chamber of Greece, URSI, IRI and other organizations. Since 1964 he has been involved in research on radio-propagation, antennas and microwaves, working mainly at the Fondazione Bordoni, Italy, University of Edinburgh, UK and University of Thessaloniki, Greece. He has published several papers on radio-propagation, antennas, communication transmission and microwaves and millimeter-waves devices. In 1976 he joined with the Department of Electrical Engineering, School of Engineering Science, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He served as professor of telecommunications from 1978 to 2002. Since 2002 he is an emeritus professor.  相似文献

This paper considers two well-known selective-repeat retransmission schemes, namely, hybrid type-I ARQ and hybrid type-II ARQ, using convolutional coding, in conjunction with maximum-likelihood code combining. Our theoretical analysis, based upon the concept of generalized weight distribution, shows that the use of code combining yields a significant throughput at very high channel error rates not only in constant AWGN channels but also in fading channels. To demonstrate this, we consider a widely-used block-fading Rayleigh channel model, in which the channel is assumed to be constant during each block of data and the fading is assumed to be independent from block to block. A key parameter in designing retransmission protocols for delay-limited applications in such channels is the minimum number of retransmissions, needed to achieve error-free decoding at almost all channel conditions (low outage probability). This number can be reduced significantly when code combining is employed.  相似文献

信道的慢瑞利衰落特性导致通信系统的性能——吞吐量的下降。本文基于选择重传(SRARQ)与返回-n(GBN ARQ)相结合的混合ARQ协议(SR GBN ARQ),依据发送方连续收到的确认(ACK)/非确认(NACK)消息的次数,正确评估慢瑞利衰落信道的状况以改变分组长度的一种自适应ARQ协议。仿真结果表明对于慢瑞利衰落、长往返旅程延迟(T)信道,该协议能取得较优的吞吐性能。  相似文献

Link Adaptation (LA) has been proposed in the literature as a means of increasing the throughput obtained by each user in wireless communication systems. Due to its significant simplicity, LA has even been adopted as the standard adaptive coding technique for the next generation mobile communication system known as EDGE. In this paper, we present a novel link adaptation technique, valid for use in the case of Rayleigh fading wireless channels. The new technique is based on the blind channel estimation algorithm usually used for combating inter-symbol interference (ISI). The algorithm is presented and its efficiency in providing the maximum available throughput is illustrated by means of computer simulations.  相似文献

Performance of Hybrid ARQ Schemes for the Mobile LEO Satellite Channel   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
This paper investigates the performance of hybrid ARQ schemes for the mobile Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite channel. The proposed schemes adapt their characteristics to the time-varying behavior of the channel. To obtain an unbiased comparison of different ARQ schemes an approximated analytical method is adopted. More precisely, the sphere-packing bound is used to estimate the best possible performance of a hybrid ARQ scheme. To assess the accuracy of the bound, simulation results, based on the use of turbo codes, are also presented. This paper proposes a time divisionmultiple access/time division duplex (TDMA/TDD)-basedadaptive modulation system (AMS) with aconvolutionally coded Type-II Hybrid automatic repeatrequest (ARQ) protocol to achieve high throughput datatransmission in wireless communication systems. First,this paper discusses the cause of throughputlimitation of the conventional fixed-rate quaternaryphase shift keying (QPSK) with ARQ protocol andsuggests that the effective means to improvethroughput performance are the reduction ofre-transmission probability under bad channelcondition and the increase of transmission bit rate perTDMA/TDD slot under good channel condition. Based onthese strategies, this paper discusses an AMS with aconvolutionally coded type-II hybrid ARQ protocol(type-II hybrid ARQ/AMS) and evaluates itsperformance by computer simulation. The resultsconfirm that the proposed type-II hybrid ARQ/AMS candrastically improve throughput performances comparedto the conventional fixed-rate QPSK with selectiverepeat ARQ protocol (SR-ARQ/QPSK) or a simplecombination of SR-ARQ and AMS (SR-ARQ/AMS) under anychannel conditions, especially under severe channelconditions.  相似文献

Space diversity reception, in which several signals received at different antennas are combined, is a well known method that can be used to combat the effects of fading in wireless systems. Also, trellis coded modulation (TCM), when combined with interleaving of sufficient depth, is known to provide some form of time diversity that allows the achievement of good error performance in fading environments. In this paper we consider the analysis of the error performance of reference-based Maximal Ratio Combining (MRC) systems when used in conjunction with trellis-coded MPSK modulation techniques over a Rayleigh fading channel. We also consider the analysis of MRC trellis-coded MPSK systems with conventional differential detection. The results are obtained by using a combination of theoretical analysis and simulation. Exact and near-exact expressions for the pairwise error-event probability in Rayleigh fading are derived. Monte-Carlo simulation results, which are more indicative of the exact system performance, are also given.  相似文献

Freedom of mobility is the latesttrend in the evolution of digital communicationsystems. In these systems bandwidth and powerconstraints limit the mobility of the users. TCM(trellis coded modulation) is a combined coding andmodulation scheme which increases the productivity ofa digital communication system without increasing thetransmitted power or the required bandwidth. A mobilecommunication channel is affected from noise andfading because of the multipath propagation. On aRayleigh fading channel, coding should be used withtechniques which uncorrelate the received energy ofeach consecutive coded symbol. Interleaving is one ofthese techniques and used to make burst errors intorandom errors which can be corrected by errorcorrecting codes. In this paper, the trellis codingsystem which combines a regular convolutional encoder,bit interleaver, coordinate interleaver, and anappropriate decoder is considered. The analytical biterror probability upper bounds are derived for the8-PSK TCM system whose diversity is increased by usinga regular 2/3 rate convolutional code followed bythree bit interleavers and a 8-PSK signal mapperfollowed by two coordinate interleavers. Theanalytical and simulation results show that toincrease the diversity of the trellis coded M-PSKsystems in Rayleigh fading channels is the primary keyfor reliable transmission of high quality voice anddigital data.  相似文献

本文研究了Rayleigh衰落信道中以信道容量规则为设计准则的多级编码调制系统的不等错误保护性能的实现及其改进.在详细分析了多级编码调制的不等错误保护原理的基础上,设计了一种针对8ASK调制的非均匀信号星座.理论分析与计算机仿真均表明,非均匀信号星座的设计能够增强多级编码调制系统的不等错误保护能力,在不展宽频带的前提下有效地提高Rayleigh衰落环境下数字通信系统的传输质量.  相似文献

A soft-decision 8-DPSK modulation format is introducedin a concatenated coding scheme and the performance of the resultingsystem is evaluated over a slow Rayleigh fading HF ionospheric link inthe presence of Additive White Gaussian noise (AWGN). Well-known UngerboeckTCM techniques are used as inner codes and a Reed–Solomon blockcode as outer code. The coded/modulated signal is differentially encodedbefore transmission to combat random phase changes caused by the channel.Soft-decision demodulator's output is used as an input to a modifiedViterbi decoder that calculates the Euclidean distances of the receivedsignal from an 8-PSK constellation adapted to the signal's amplitudevariations. Block interleaving techniques are necessary to randomise longbursts of errors caused by the fading channel. Simulation results showthat significant coding gains are achieved with a minor bandwidth expansionover uncoded, diversity or other coded systems. Joint Data and Kalman Estimation for Rayleigh Fading Channels   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Channel estimation is an essential part of many detection techniques proposed for data transmission over fading channels. For the frequency selective Rayleigh fading channel an autoregressive moving average representation is proposed based on the fading model parameters. The parameters of this representation are determined based on the fading channel characteristics, making it possible to employ the Kalman filter as the best estimator for the channel impulse response. For IS-136 formatted data transmission the Kalman filter is employed with the Viterbi algorithm in a Per-Survivor Processing (PSP) fashion and the ove rall bit error rate performance is shown to be superior to that of detection techniques using the RLS and LMS estimators. To allow more than one channel estimation per symbol interval, Per-Branch Processing (PBP) method is introduced as a general case of PSP and its effect on performance is evaluated. The sensitivity of performance to parameters such as fading model order and vehicle speed is also studied.  相似文献

This paper investigates the tradeoffs of source coding, channel coding and spreading in CDMA systems. We consider a system consisting of an image source coder, a convolutional channel coder, an interleaver, and a direct sequence spreading module. With different allocations of bandwidth to source coding, channel coding and spreading, the system is analyzed over a frequency selective Rayleigh fading channel. The performance of the system is evaluated using the cumulative distribution function of peak signal-to-noise ratio. Tradeoffs of different components of the system are determined through simulations. We show that, for a given bandwidth, an optimal allocation of that bandwidth can be found. Tradeoffs among the parameters allow us to tune the system performance to specific requirements.  相似文献
