Degradation of pigmented epoxy coatings on a steel substrate during exposure to aerated 3% NaCl solution has been investigated using the scanning Kelvin probe (SKP) and scanning acoustic microscopy (SAM). A method for processing SKP potential maps has been used to visualize the distribution of anodic and cathodic current. It was observed that rust deposited at the defects, or later beneath the coating, acted as a cathodic reactant, leading to development of new anodes beneath the coating. Exposure of rusty samples to moist air (rather than salt solution) during SKP mapping is shown to lead to more noble potentials at the defect that influence the electrochemistry of under-film processes.  相似文献

We describe the construction and operation of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) designed in our laboratory that is contained in a reaction cell and allows operation throughout a wide range of pressures (ultra-high vacuum-atmospheric) and temperatures (300–425 K). This thermally compensated, double piezo tube design is entirely mechanically clamped. Samples are inertially translated and can be easily transferred in and out of the STM. With this microscope, we have investigated the stability of Pt(110) as a function of oxygen and hydrogen pressure and temperature.  相似文献

A simple top-down fabrication technique that involves scanning probe lithography on Si is presented. The writing procedure consists of a chemically selective patterning in mesitylene. Operating in an organic media is possible to perform local oxidation or solvent decomposition during the same pass by tuning the applied bias. The layer deposited with a positively biased tip with sub-100-nm lateral resolution consists of nanocrystalline graphite, as verified by Raman spectroscopy. The oxide pattern obtained in opposite polarization is later used as a mask for dry etching, showing a remarkable selectivity in SF6 plasma, to produce Si nanofeatured molds.  相似文献

Scanning electrochemical microscopy has been used to examine the molecular transport properties of photopolymerized poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) hydrogels having different mesh sizes. Both the molecular weight (508 Da or 3000 Da) of the PEG diacrylate macromer and its weight percent (20 wt%, 40 wt%, or 60 wt%) in solution prior to photopolymerization were varied. Mesh size was estimated from equilibrium swelling measurements and a thermodynamic model. Estimated mesh sizes ranged from ca. 10 Å for 60 wt% PEG 508 gels to ca. 100 Å for 20 wt% PEG 3000 gels. The electrochemically active diffusing species, ferrocenemethanol, was detected via oxidation at a platinum microelectrode. For a given hydrogel, multiple approach curves showed a consistent relationship between current and distance. Electrochemically estimated diffusivities followed the same trend as predictions based on mesh size and ranged from 25% to 80% of the diffusivity in aqueous solution. As a proof of concept, scanning electrochemical microscopy was successfully used to map the topography of hydrogels with complex architecture, which are being designed as cell scaffolds.  相似文献

The emergence of conducting polymer nanostructures, with their important and wide-ranging applications in sensors, displays and coatings, has not been accompanied by an emergence of appropriate electrochemical nanoscale characterization tools. Herein we show that nanopipettes, as implemented in variants of the scanning ion conductance microscope, have the potential to address numerous needs of the conducting polymer nanostructure community. Specifically, nanopipettes can fabricate freestanding conducting polymer nanowires, map electroactivity and conductivity, deliver doses of reagents with nanoscale precision, perform highly localized cyclic voltammetry and characterize ion flux from actuators. Additionally, nanopipette innovations already demonstrated in biological and analytical fields - such as individually controlled double-barreled nanopipette setups, voltage-controlled deposition and functionalized surfaces - open the door to new approaches to conducting polymer nanostructure fabrication and characterization.  相似文献

A new supramolecular system between a barbituric acid-substituted fullerene derivative (1) and dipyrenemethyl-substituted melamine (2) through hydrogen-bonding interaction was prepared. The formation of hydrogen bonding was confirmed by 1H NMR studies in CDCl3/CS2. The photocurrent generation of the self-assembled film of 2 · 1 was measured and a cathodic photocurrent response was obtained. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed that the self-assembly system could fabricate two different types of aggregated structures: nanoparticles and nanorods.  相似文献

Anatolia (Asia Minor) was inhibitated by several civilizations during the history. Dorylaion at Eski?ehir/Turkey, an ancient site, is on the crossroads of many ancient civilizations. Artifacts belonging to different historical periods and cultures have been uncovered during the excavations carried out there since 1989. One of the two important groups of ceramic findings uncovered in these excavation works is the moldmade bowls, familiarly known as the Megarian bowls and the other is the West Slope wares. Both types of wares were probably the fashion cups around the east Mediterranean basin of the Hellenistic period. In this study, an attempt was made to enlighten the technological parameters and production technology of selected Megarian bowls and West Slope wares by characterizing their slip layers. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX) were performed for microstructural and microchemical characterization. Micro-Raman spectroscopy was further applied for assessing the mineralogical components. The slip layers of both wares have similar elemental diversity, apart from the fact that the West Slope wares have more iron content than the Megarian bowls. The iron rich composition of the slip layers in different colors showed that hematite (α-Fe2O3), maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) and magnetite (Fe3O4) are the principal coloring agents for the slip layers of the investigated Hellenistic ceramic wares. However, firing conditions affecting the formation and the abundance of these minerals were probably adjusted in order to obtain the desired color.  相似文献

Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) has been employed for a comparative structural characterization, down to the atomic scale, of a representative set of porous carbons with different adsorption characteristics and prepared either by activation (physical or chemical) or templating techniques. The studied materials included a chemically activated, supermicroporous high surface area carbon, two activated carbons containing both micro- and mesopores synthesized by physical activation, an ultramicroporous carbon molecular sieve, and an ordered microporous carbon templated in the nanochannels of zeolite Y. In general, good agreement was found between the porous structures as imaged by STM and the porous texture derived from gas adsorption data for all the carbons investigated. The activated carbon samples were dominated by networks of slit type micropores and, in some cases, by mesopores of varied morphologies. By contrast, the zeolite-templated carbon exhibited rounded micropore morphology, and the carbon molecular sieve displayed a rather featureless conformation dominated by voids only below 1 nm wide. The structural differences observed by STM were interpreted in terms of the different preparation procedures of the studied carbons. In particular, the templated carbon consisted of minute clusters about 1 nm in diameter that were interpreted to be formed within the extremely confined, microporous spaces of the zeolite Y template.  相似文献

Raman spectra of SWNTs suspended in aqueous solutions containing fragmented single-stranded DNA (SWNT:DNA), and films obtained from this suspension have been obtained. SEM study of the dried films indicated that the nanotubes tend to aggregate into bundles which results in the enhancement of the Raman intensity of the G tangential band, and an upshift and broadening of the G+ band. The intensity of radial breathing modes of metallic SWNTs is higher in the SWNT:DNA films as compared to that of the SWNT:DNA solution. The Raman spectra of SWNT:PVP and SWNT:agaroza samples exhibit similar changes as the SWNT:DNA samples when films are cast from the corresponding solutions. Both films and the solution forms of SWNT:DNA yield luminescence spectra which indicates the presence of individual tubes or small bundles in the films. The luminescence bands of SWNT:DNA films are relatively wider and is attributed to the interaction of DNA with the nanotube surface in the solid state.  相似文献

We investigate thermodynamic states inside the hysteresis in the adsorption–desorption isotherms of mesoporous materials by perturbing the adsorbate at a point inside the loop. Scanning curves were run to points inside the hysteresis loop and then the system was perturbed by both mechanical and thermal means. Mechanical perturbations were performed by placing a speaker inside the cryogenic bath to expose the system to vibrations. Thermal disturbances were performed by changing the temperature bath ±10 K and back or by removing the bath for 30–60 s. We find that vibrations up to 500 kHz have no substantial effect on the quantity adsorbed for states that lie within the loop. On the other hand, thermal shocks do affect the system and the states inside the hysteresis loop are found to be unstable with respect to this sort of perturbation. The final state after the sample is returned to its original temperature bath depends on whether the temperature had been raised or lowered during the shock. For increases in temperature, the adsorbed state shifts onto the adsorption branch of the hysteresis; for decreases in temperature, the state shifts onto the desorption branch.  相似文献
