In the presence of uncertain constraint and robot model, an adaptive controller with robust motion/force tracking performance for constrained robot manipulators is proposed. First, robust motion and force tracking is considered, where a performance criterion containing disturbance and estimated parameter attenuations is presented. Then the proposed controller utilizes an adaptive scheme and an auxiliary control law to deal with the uncertain environmental constraint, disturbances, and robotic modeling uncertainties. After solving a simple linear matrix inequality for gain conditions, the effect from disturbance and estimated parameter errors to motion/force errors is attenuated to an arbitrary prescribed level. Moreover, if the disturbance and estimated parameter errors are square-integrable, then an asymptotic motion tracking is achieved while the force error is as small as the inversion of control gain. Finally, numerical simulation results for a constrained planar robot illustrate the expected performance.

Decentralized adaptive control of electrically-driven manipulators
This paper presents two new decentralized strategies for motion control of uncertain electrically-driven manipulators. The first controller is an adaptive position regulation scheme which ensures semiglobal asymptotic convergence of the position error if no external disturbances are present and semiglobal convergence of the error to an arbitrarily small neighborhood of zero in the presence of bounded disturbances. It is shown that the regulation scheme can be modified to provide accurate trajectory tracking control through the introduction of adaptive feedforward elements in the control law; this second control strategy retains the simple decentralized structure of the first controller and ensures arbitrarily accurate tracking in the presence of bounded disturbances. Each of the adaptive schemes is very efficient computationally and requires virtually no information concerning either the manipulator or actuator models. The results of computer simulations and laboratory experiments with both terrestrial and space manipulators demonstrate that accurate and robust motion control can be achieved by using the proposed approach.

In this paper, a neural network approach is presented for the motion control of constrained flexible manipulators, where both the contact force everted by the flexible manipulator and the position of the end-effector contacting with a surface are controlled. The dynamic equations for vibration of flexible link and constrained force are derived. The developed control, scheme can adaptively estimate the underlying dynamics of the manipulator using recurrent neural networks (RNNs). Based on the error dynamics of a feedback controller, a learning rule for updating the connection weights of the adaptive RNN model is obtained. Local stability properties of the control system are discussed. Simulation results are elaborated on for both position and force trajectory tracking tasks in the presence of varying parameters and unknown dynamics, which show that the designed controller performs remarkably well.

This paper presents the motion and force control problem of rigid-link electrically driven cooperative mobile manipulators handling a rigid object. Although, the motion/force control problem of cooperative mobile manipulators has been enthusiastically studied. But there is little research on the motion/force control of electrically driven cooperative mobile manipulators. Due to the inclusion of the actuator dynamics with the manipulator’s dynamics, the controller exhibits some important characteristics. For the electromechanical system, we have designed a novel controller at the dynamic level as well as at the actuator level. In the proposed control scheme, at the dynamic level, uncertain non-linear mechanical dynamics is approximated with a hybrid controller containing model-based control scheme combined with model-free neural network based control scheme together with an adaptive bound. The adaptive bound is used to suppress the effects of external disturbances, friction terms, and reconstruction error of the neural network. At the actuator level, for the approximation of the unknown electrical dynamics, the model-free neural network is utilized. The developed control scheme provides that the position tracking errors, as well as the internal force, converge to the desired levels. Additionally, direct current motors are also controlled in such a way that the desired currents and torques can be attained. In order to make the overall system to be asymptotically stable, online learning of the weights and the parameter adaptation of the parameters is utilized in the Lyapunov function. The superiority of the developed control method is carried out with the numerical simulation results and its superior robustness is shown in a comparative manner.

This article addresses the motion tracking control for a class of flexible-joint robotic manipulators actuated by brushed direct current motors. This class of electrically driven flexible-joint robots is perturbed by time-varying parametric uncertainties and external disturbances. A novel observer-based robust dynamic feedback tracking controller without velocity measurements will be developed such that the resulting closed-loop system is locally stable, all the states and signals are bounded and the trajectory tracking errors can be made as small as possible. Only the measurements of link position and armature current are required for feedback and so the number of sensors in the practical implementation of the developed control scheme can be greatly reduced. The observer structure is of reduced order in the sense that the observer is constructed only to estimate the velocity signals and whose dimension is half of the dimension of flexible-joint robots. Especially, for the set-point regulation problem, the developed controller is simplified to a linear time-invariant controller. Consequently, the robust tracking control scheme developed in this study can be extended to handle a broader class of uncertain electrically driven flexible-joint robots and the developed robust control schemes possess the properties of computational simplicity and easy implementation. Finally, simulation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithms.

Basing on a constraint Jacobian induced orthogonal decomposition of the task space and by requiring the force controller to be orthogonal to the constraint manifold, the dynamics of the constrained robots under hybrid control is decomposed into a set of two equations. One describes the motion of robots moving on the constraint manifold, while the other relates the constraint force with the hybrid controller. This decomposition does not require the solution of the constraint equation in partition form. In this setting, the hybrid control of constrained robots can be essentially reduced to robust stabilization of uncertain nonlinear systems whose uncertainties do not satisfy the matching condition. A continuous version of the sliding-mode controller (from Khalil [12]) is employed to design a position controller. The force controller is designed as a proportional force error feedback of high gain type. The coordination of the position controller and the force controller is shown to achieve ultimately bounded position and force tracking with tunable accuracy. Moreover, an estimate of the domain of attraction is provided for the motion on the constraint manifold. Simulation for a planar two-link robot constraining on an ellipse is given to show the effectiveness of a hybrid controller. In addition, the friction effect, viewed as external disturbance to the system, is also examined through simulations.

This study is devoted to sensorless adaptive force/position control of robot manipulators using a position-based adaptive force estimator (AFE) and a force-based adaptive environment compliance estimator. Unlike the other sensorless method in force control that uses disturbance observer and needs an accurate model of the manipulator, in this method, the unknown parameters of the robot can be estimated along with the force control. Even more, the environment compliance can be estimated simultaneously to achieve tracking force control. In fact, this study deals with three challenging problems: No force sensor is used, environment stiffness is unknown, and some parametric uncertainties exist in the robot model. A theorem offers control laws and updating laws for two control loops. In the inner loop, AFE estimates the exerted force, and then, the force control law in the outer loop modifies the desired trajectory of the manipulator for the adaptive tracking loop. Besides, an updating law updates the estimated compliance to provide an accurate tracking force control. Some experimental results of a PHANToM Premium robot are provided to validate the proposed scheme. In addition, some simulations are presented that verify the performance of the controller for different situations in interaction.

This paper deals with the synchronized motion trajectory tracking control problem of multiple pneumatic cylinders. An adaptive robust synchronization controller is developed by incorporating the cross‐coupling technology into the integrated direct/indirect adaptive robust control (DIARC) architecture. The position synchronization error and the trajectory tracking error of each cylinder are combined to construct the so‐called coupled position error. The proposed adaptive robust synchronization controller is designed with the feedback of this coupled position error and is composed of two parts: an on‐line parameter estimation algorithm and a robust control law. The former is employed to obtain accurate estimates of model parameters for reducing the extent of parametric uncertainties, while the latter is utilized to attenuate the effects of parameter estimation errors, unmodelled dynamics, and external disturbances. Theoretically, both the position synchronization and trajectory tracking errors will achieve asymptotic convergence simultaneously. Moreover, the effectiveness of the proposed controller is verified by the extensive experimental results performed on a two‐cylinder pneumatic system.

In this article, an adaptive neural controller is developed for cooperative multiple robot manipulator system carrying and manipulating a common rigid object. In coordinated manipulation of a single object using multiple robot manipulators simultaneous control of the object motion and the internal force exerted by manipulators on the object is required. Firstly, an integrated dynamic model of the manipulators and the object is derived in terms of object position and orientation as the states of the derived model. Based on this model, a controller is proposed that achieves required trajectory tracking of the object as well as tracking of the desired internal forces arising in the system. A feedforward neural network is employed to learn the unknown dynamics of robot manipulators and the object. It is shown that the neural network can cope with the unknown nonlinearities through the adaptive learning process and requires no preliminary offline learning. The adaptive learning algorithm is derived from Lyapunov stability analysis so that both error convergence and tracking stability are guaranteed in the closed loop system. Finally, simulation studies and analysis are carried out for two three-link planar manipulators moving a circular disc on specified trajectory.

In this paper, we design an adaptive position/force controller for robot manipulators during constrained motion. The proposed controller can compensate for parametric uncertainty while only requiring measurements of link position and end-effector force. A filtering technique is utilized to produce a pseudo-velocity error signal and thus, eliminate the need for link velocity measurements. The control strategy provides semiglobal asymptotic tracking performance for the end-effector position and the interaction force between the constraint and the end-effector. An experimental implementation of the proposed controller on a two-link planar robot is also presented.

In this paper, the variable structure control (VSC) and switching-σ adaptive laws are used to design a new robust controller for single-arm rigid manipulators in joint space. The controller is shown to be robust with respect to bounded disturbance. More particularly, a bound on the tracking error is determined and shown to be smaller than those resulting from the VSC) law proposed in Slotine and Li as well as the robust adaptive control law derived in Reed and Ioannou. The simulations also show that the proposed control law has better tracking precision performance than the VSC law and switching-σ adaptive control law. It can also suppress chattering and maintain good tracking precision even if actuator unmodeled dynamics are considered

This paper addresses the problem of tracking control of multiple hydraulic manipulators handling a rigid object. We propose a controller that allows two or more hydraulically-actuated robots cooperatively, to move a rigid object along a desired trajectory while sharing the load and maintaining an acceptable internal force on the object. The parasitic effect of friction in the actuators, as well as parametric uncertainties in the manipulators’ dynamics, hydraulic functions and the payload, are compensated through augmentation of the controller by a set of online updating laws. Additionally, an adaptive observer is used along with the controller to avoid the requirement of acceleration feedback, which could be difficult to obtain in practice. Only measurements of joint positions, joint velocities and hydraulic line pressures are required for the implementation of the controller. The tracking error of the control system is proven to converge to zero while the internal force remains bounded. It is further proven that the internal force can be set as close as possible to the desired value through the addition of a simple force feedback loop with an adjustable gain. Both simulation and experimental studies are conducted to clearly illustrate the effectiveness of the developed controller for various tracking tasks. The simulations are carried out using a complete nonlinear model of two multiple-degree-of-freedom industrial hydraulic manipulators handling a rigid object. Experiments are carried out on an available fully-instrumented electro-hydraulic system.

In this paper, we consider multiple mobile manipulators grasping a common object in contact with a rigid surface, and propose a new version of adaptive robust control extended to the actuator level for multiple mobile manipulators carrying a common object in a cooperative manner. The proposed controls are robust not only to parametric uncertainties including mass variation and electrical parameters but also to external disturbances. Simulation results are presented to validate that the motion/force tracking errors converge to zero whereas the internal force tracking error remains bounded and can be made arbitrarily small.
