Neutralizing capacity of ++antiophidic sera against the venom of Bothrops moojeni (lance-headed viper)

Human oncostatin M (OM) is a M(r) 28,000 glycoprotein that has been shown to regulate cell proliferation and differentiation. The biological activities of OM can be mediated by two different heterodimeric receptor complexes, the leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF)/OM shared receptor and the OM-specific receptor. In this study, we have examined the growth-regulatory effect of OM on 10 breast cancer cell lines derived from human tumors. The cellular proliferation of seven of these breast cancer cell lines was inhibited by OM. The three cell lines that did not respond to OM treatment lacked the expression of OM receptors. The growth-inhibitory activity of OM is examined further in the H3922 breast cancer cell line, which expresses the high-affinity OM receptor at a relatively higher level. We found that the cellular proliferation of H3922 cells was induced strongly by extrogenous epidermal growth factor (EGF), EGF-like factor, and basic fibroblast growth factor. The proliferative activities of these growth factors can be abolished totally by cotreatment of H3922 cells with OM. Treatment of H3922 cells with OM for 24 h did not block EGF binding or the induction of EGF receptor tyrosine phosphorylation. This finding suggests that OM interferes with the mitogenic signal at steps distal to the EGF receptor. Examination of proto-oncogene expression demonstrated that OM down-regulates the c-myc gene in H3922 cells. The biological effects reported herein are not shared by the OM-related cytokines interleukin 6 or LIF, as demonstrated by the inability of these proteins to inhibit cell growth or modulate c-myc gene expression in breast cancer cells. Additionally, the high-affinity binding of labeled OM cannot be displaced by LIF. Together, these data suggest that OM is a growth inhibitor for breast cancer cells. The inhibitory activity is mediated predominantly through the OM-specific receptor, and activation of this receptor abrogates growth factor stimulation and down-regulates the c-myc proto-oncogene.     

The first British reference preparations of cholera vaccine (Inaba) and of cholera vaccine (Ogawa)

We examined the visceral blood flow distribution during infusion of three vasodilators at doses that produced similar depression of systemic arterial pressure. The studies were performed in pentobarbital-anesthetized dogs using the radioactive microspheres technique. Minoxidil did not alter renal, total visceral, or visceral organ flow distribution with the exception of a modest increase in relative stomach blood flow. Nitroprusside increased the percentage of total visceral flow to the spleen and the hepatic artery. Dopamine increased blood flow to the stomach, intestine, and kidney. After phenoxybenzamine, the augmentation of stomach blood flow by dopamine was greatly increased, while blood flow to the splenic, pancreatic, and hepatic arteriolar vascular beds decreased. The decreases in blood flows may be due to decreased perfusion pressure in the absence of active vasodilation or to myogenic or metabolic autoregulation. Thus, at equivalent hypotensive responses, the vasodilator compounds that we studied produced markedly different patterns of visceral blood flow.     

Second examination in meat inspection (author's transl)

A second examination at the expense of the party adjudged to be in error is based on Section 13 of the Meat Inspection Act in the Netherlands, which has been elaborated in Sections 51 and 51a of the Meat Inspection Order. The procedure to be adopted by the second veterinary-surgeon inspector, however, has not been stipulated. The need for clear instructions is stressed. The present paper was designed to promote objectivity and uniformity in second inspections to provide legal security for the owner of the slaughtered animal as well as for the first veterinary-surgeon inspector.     

460 MPa级含铬英标螺纹钢筋的试制开发

为满足市场需求,天津钢铁集团有限公司(以下简称天钢)通过在螺纹钢筋添加铬元素,调整Si、Mn、Cr元素的配比,以及轧制控冷工艺的调整,制定合理的回火温度范围,开发出460 MPa级含铬英标螺纹钢筋。螺纹钢筋各项力学性能指标稳定,外形尺寸控制良好,能够满足英标460 MPa级螺纹钢筋的要求。     

The Somatropin Reference Standard (Control 951) of the National Institute of Health Sciences

Somatropin material was examined for preparation of the "Somatropin Reference Standard". The candidate material was evaluated by a domestic collaborative study in which eight laboratories participated. The protein content was determined to be 4.5 mg/Vial based on amino acid analysis. Because of the possibility of application as a chemical reference standard for assay by the HPLC method, a physico-chemical evaluation of the candidate material was also performed. By SE-HPLC, the content of polymer, dimer were determined to be 0.54%, 0.98%, respectively. By RP-HPLC, the early peak area ascribed to desamido and sulfoxide form was 1.07% of the total peak area. And for informational data, the potency of the candidate material, being estimated by three different biological methods, weight gain assay, tibia test and adiposeconversion assay is 14.8 IU/vial. Based on the above results, the candidate was authorized as the Somatropin Reference Standard of the National Institute of Health Sciences.     

The Cyclandelate Reference Standard (Control 931) of the National Institute of Health Sciences

Raw thiamine hydrochloride material was tested for preparation of the "Thiamine Hydrochloride Reference Standard (Control 931)". Analytical data obtained were as follows: melting point, 242.7 degrees C (decomposition); infrared spectrum, the same as that of the JP Thiamine Hydrochloride Reference Standard; thin-layer chromatography, one impurity was detected; high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), a trace amount of one impurity was detected; assay results, 100.4% by UV spectrophotometry and 100.0% by HPLC, respectively. Based on the above findings, the raw material was authorized as the JP Thiamine Hydrochloride Reference Standard (Control 931).

Standard radical surgery for carcinoma of the gallbladder invading the subserosal layer (ss cancer)

Not all patients diagnosed with unstable angina have the same outcome. Thus, it is incumbent on the physician caring for these patients to try to identify factors that will risk-stratify them. These factors include the degree of coronary angiographic stenosis, the lesion morphology, severity of symptoms, presence or absence of transient myocardial ischemia, and state of left ventricular function. In addition, many other factors including the patient's age, gender, and coexisting medical disorders must be considered when trying to prognosticate an individual patient. Clinical experience indicates that clinical indices that combine information provided by all of the above related variables should have more powerful prognostic significance than any individual variable.     

The importance of 2,3-dimercaptopropinol (British anti-lewisite, BAL) in the trypanocidal activity of topical melarsoprol

The author agrees with the critiques of moral theory offered by such writers as Bernard Williams and Alasdair MacIntyre, and uses ideas from Heidegger and Levinas to argue that caring is an ontological structure of human existence which takes two forms: caring about on self (which he calls our "self-project") and caring-about-others. This dual form of caring is expressed on four Aristotelian levels of human living which the author describes and illustrates with reference to the phenomenon of pain. It is concluded from this analysis that traditional notions of morality as imposing obligations should give way to an understanding of ethics as the social forms given to our caring for ourselves and for others. A number of implications for ethical theory are sketched out with the conclusion that virtue theory should be preferred and that the model could be worked out more fully to show that virtue theory can be internalist, particularist, pluralist, personalist and objectivist.

Standard values of lung function diagnostics in children (author's transl)

A joint study of 7 laboratories was initiated for the determination of standard function values in childhood. The sample included 3500 children. The vital capacity, forced expiratory volume, residual capacity, total capacity and work of breathing were determined and normal values calculated. These parameters were correlated with body height, body surface area, body weight and age. For an easy estimation of the predicted values regression formulas of the measured function are elaborated.     

德标BSt500S(B)钢筋的试验生产

为研制生产德标BSt500S(B)钢筋,通过对钢筋德国标准和技术要求进行分解的方式,制定了对应的冶炼、轧制工艺参数.试验生产的钢筋力学性能ReL≥540MPa,Rm≥710MPa,Rm/ReL≥1.20;横截面积负偏差控制在-2.85%以内,综合合格率达到100%.
