Project Web sites comprise a new and rapidly growing category of software tool in the design and construction industry. There are now dozens of firms selling these tools and hundreds if not thousands of project teams using them. As this product category matures, it is relevant to question what we have learned and look to make improvements in the design and implementation of project Web sites. As a practitioner, the author has closely observed the development and use of the first generation of project web-sites. This paper summarizes his observations about the key issues in implementing these sites on projects. The central thesis is that project Web sites need to be better integrated into the job activities of project team members and that the current "one-size fits all team members" model that most Web sites ascribe to does not maximize the value of this technology.  相似文献

During the construction process, there occur many unexpected events that hinder timely completion of a project. One plausible solution in formulating a robust plan against such uncertainties is to provide the proper construction duration by utilizing as-built schedules in which past events are stored for similar future projects. Many schedulers thus develop schedules based on similar past schedules, taking into consideration the dynamic construction environment. As a result, construction schedulers normally refer to similar past schedules for their current projects. Few studies on the reuse of past schedules using case-based reasoning (CBR) have been conducted, and those that are available are limited to specific areas of construction such as apartment-building construction and boiler manufacturing. This research has an emphasis on developing a CBR-based general planning tool with higher applicability, which consists of generic attributes with the capability to be customized to the given project. To address this issue, construction planning by CBR (CONPLA-CBR) is presented as a generic planning tool for various types of construction projects. CONPLA-CBR, with the dynamic case approach and construction schedule data mart, also developed in this research, helps schedulers to utilize past schedules. CONPLA-CBR was not only verified to be of practical utility by experts, but also, because it uses past cases to which the successor relationships pertain, it does not require users to input all relationships. Whereas the proposed CONPLA-CBR generates master schedules at the preconstruction stage, its concept can also be applied to the construction stages to generate more detailed, for example, weekly or monthly, schedules. Thereby, CONPLA-CBR would enhance construction performance through the increased application of CBR in construction.  相似文献

Efficient allocation of resources for construction planning activities requires construction planning resource requirements to be determined on a cost-effective and value-adding basis. However, although some research studies have indicated that increasing resource allocations to construction planning activities will lead to improved project performance, other research studies have indicated that investing in construction planning beyond an optimum point will lead to a deterioration in project performance. This study explored the concept of optimal planning of construction projects by examining 52 building projects undertaken in Australia. The relationships between planning input (ratio of planning costs to total project costs) and the probabilities of achieving poor performance and good performance were modeled using logistic, linear, and curvilinear regression analyses. A probable optimum planning input based on the sample studied was derived. It is suggested that any additional planning efforts beyond this optimum point would be essentially wasted because the additional planning costs would not achieve any savings in project cost but merely add to the overhead costs and therefore increase the overall project cost. A model for optimal planning is presented and discussed.  相似文献

Delay in construction projects is considered one of the most common problems causing a multitude of negative effects on the project and its participating parties. This paper aims to identify the main causes of delay in construction projects in Egypt from the point of view of contractors, consultants, and owners. A literature review was conducted to compile a list of delay causes that was purged based on appropriateness to Egypt in seven semistructured interviews. The resulting list of delay causes was subjected to a questionnaire survey for quantitative confirmation and identification of the most important causes of delay. The overall results indicated that the most important causes are: financing by contractor during construction, delays in contractor’s payment by owner, design changes by owner or his agent during construction, partial payments during construction, and nonutilization of professional construction/contractual management. The contractor and owner were found to have opposing views, mostly blaming one another for delays, while the consultant was seen as having a more intermediate view. Results’ analyses suggest that in order to significantly reduce delay a joint effort based on teamwork is required. Furthermore, causes of project delay were discussed based on the type and size of the project.  相似文献

Construction simulation is the science of developing and experimenting with computer-based representations of construction systems to understand their underlying behavior. This branch of operations research applications in construction management has experienced significant academic growth over the past two decades. In this paper, the author summarizes his views on this topic as per his Peurifoy address, given in October 2008. The paper provides an overview of advancements in construction simulation theory as reported in literature. It then summarizes the key factors that contribute to successful deployment of simulation in the construction industry, and the key attributes of problems that make them more amenable for simulation modeling as opposed to other tools. The paper then provides an overview of long-term simulation initiatives leading to the next generation of computer modeling systems for construction, where simulation plays an integral role in a futuristic vision of automated project planning and control.  相似文献

Ramul is still active as Head of the Chair of Logic and Psychology at the Estonian State University at Tartu, Estonia, USSR, among other things. Application of partnering concepts on small construction projects by owners or government functionaries could result in substantial savings for private owners and public exchequers annually. This paper develops a concept for partnering for small construction projects based on recent management research and theories being developed in universities with the lessons learned from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers experiences on partnering for large projects. The discussion addresses current attitudes toward partnering, particularly, in small (i.e., up to $3,000,000) private or government sponsored projects. An objective of this paper is to share the benefits of partnering on small construction projects, based on practices and experiences of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
