We determined polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) concentrations in 35 female coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) and 60 male coho salmon caught in Lake Michigan (Michigan and Wisconsin, United States) during the fall of 1994 and 1995. In addition, we determined PCB concentrations in the skin-on fillets of 26 female and 19 male Lake Michigan coho salmon caught during the fall of 2004 and 2006. All coho salmon were age-2 fish. These fish were caught prior to spawning, and therefore release of eggs could not account for sexual differences in PCB concentrations because female coho salmon spawn only once during their lifetime. To investigate whether gross growth efficiency (GGE) differed between the sexes, we applied bioenergetics modeling. Results showed that, on average, males were 19% higher in PCB concentration than females, based on the 1994-1995 dataset. Similarly, males averaged a 20% higher PCB concentration in their skin-on fillets compared with females. According to the bioenergetics modeling results, GGE of adult females was less than 1% higher than adult male GGE. Thus, bioenergetics modeling could not explain the 20% higher PCB concentration exhibited by the males. Nonetheless, a sexual difference in GGE remained a plausible explanation for the sexual difference in PCB concentrations.  相似文献

Catching and eating fish is usually viewed as a fun, healthy and safe activity. However, with continuing increases in fish consumption advisories due to the contamination of our environment, anglers have to decide whether or not to eat the fish they catch. The Clinch River arm of Watts Bar Reservoir is under a fish consumption advisory because of elevated PCB concentrations in striped bass (Morone saxatilis), catfish (Ictalurus spp.) and sauger (Stizostedion canadense) due in part from contaminants released from the US Department of Energy's (USDOE's) Oak Ridge Reservation (ORR) in East Tennessee. To obtain information about the demographics, fishing behavior, knowledge, fish consumption and risk perception of anglers, a survey was conducted of 202 people actively fishing either on land or by boat along the Clinch River arm of Watts Bar Reservoir adjacent to the ORR from Melton Hill Dam to the Poplar Creek confluence or on Poplar Creek within ORR boundaries from mid-March to early November 2001. Even though 81% of people interviewed knew about the fish consumption advisories for the study area, 48% of them thought the fish were safe to eat, while 38% ate the fish that they caught from the study area. Approximately 36% of anglers who had knowledge of the fish consumption warnings ate fish from the study area. Providing confirmation that people fish for many reasons, 35% of anglers interviewed did not eat fish at all. The majority of anglers interviewed knew about the fish consumption advisories because of the signs posted throughout the study area. However, few people knew the correct fish advisories. Significantly fewer blacks had knowledge of the fish consumption warnings than whites. Information resulting from this study could be used to design a program with the objective of reaching the people who may be most at risk from eating fish caught from the Clinch River arm of Watts Bar Reservoir.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Different PCB congeners and different mixtures of congeners have been demonstrated to have different biological actions. More complete characterization of congener profiles in exposure sources may assist in predicting health outcomes. METHODS: Thirty-six (36) polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners were measured by gas chromatography isotope-dilution mass spectrometry (IDMS) in 314 serum samples from Native Americans in Wisconsin, Michigan and Minnesota. Five dietary groups were established based on the quantity and species of fish consumed and the waters from which the fish were caught. Multivariate statistical methods were able to resolve gender and dietary differences in PCB homologue and PCB congener patterns. RESULTS: Females had higher proportions of lower chlorinated homologues, including a consistently higher proportion of pentaCB 118. The relative presence of the very labile and volatile PCB 18, above 1% of the total PCB in females from the minimal fish consumption and "other" groups, suggests possible exposure to PCBs in the atmosphere. The dietary group consuming predatory fishes from Lakes Michigan and Superior had the highest serum concentrations of total PCB (mean of 3.1 ng/ml) and the most distinct congener profile. The two dietary groups least dependent on fishing or fishing mostly from inland lakes (non-Great Lakes) had the lowest total PCB concentrations, both with means of 1.4 ng/ml. CONCLUSIONS: These serum PCB concentrations were less than those found in earlier studies of fish consumers in the Great Lakes region and may reflect the decrease in PCBs in these lakes.  相似文献

Zhoushan Island is situated in the coast of the East China Sea. In order to assess the potential health risks associated with dietary consumption of mercury, hair samples from 59 piscatorial households, thirteen species of fish, crops and poultry samples were collected from the fishing villagers of Zhoushan. Total mercury (T-Hg) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in the fathers' hair (mean, 5.7 and 3.8 μg/g) were approximately 2.5 and 2.1 times greater and 2.6 and 2.0 times higher than those of their wives (2.3 and 1.8 μg/g) and their children (2.2 and 1.7 μg/g), respectively. However, the mean quantity of the fish consumed by the fathers was 2.5 and 2.4 times higher than those of the mothers and children, implying that there was a wide variation in hair Hg concentrations between the fathers and the mothers and children of the same household, which was probably related to the quantity, frequency and type of fish consumed. The average T-Hg and MeHg concentrations in all species of fish were 0.26 and 0.18 μg/g, respectively. Approximately, 15% and 19% of the samples showed T-Hg and MeHg levels which exceeded the limit established by the Chinese National Standard Agency (CNSA) (0.3 and 0.2 μg/g), respectively. However, T-Hg and MeHg levels in crops, poultry, milk, drinking water, food oil and salt samples were all below the corresponding CNSA limit. The estimated total daily dietary intakes of T-Hg and MeHg via different food types showed that fish intake was the major source (> 85%) of Hg exposure. The consumption advisories for the total quantity of thirteen species of fish were 69.3, 58.7 and 15.0 g per day for fathers, mothers and children, respectively.  相似文献

Little information exists on heavy metal contamination in silver fish (Rastreneobola argentea) caught from Lake Victoria. A large number of Ugandans consume the species. Sun‐dried silver fish were collected from 10 landing sites on Lake Victoria, and from five control sites along Lake Kyoga. The finely ground fish was digested with analytical reagent grade nitric acid. Analyses were performed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The specimens were found to contain significantly higher levels (p ≤ 0.05) of zinc, Zn (86.1%), copper, Cu (99.1%), cadmium, Cd (99.3%) and lead, Pb (94.6%) compared with those from the control sites. The fish contamination was attributed to discharge into Lake Victoria of untreated industrial and anthropogenic effluent. Although mean Zn, Cu and Pb concentrations were still below, those of Cd were higher than the maximum permissible levels recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). Overconsumption of the silver fish could pose Cd‐related health risks.  相似文献

The Newark Bay Complex includes the Newark Bay, tidal portions of the Hackensack River, Passaic River, Arthur Kill, and Kill van Kull. It is a highly industrialized urban area including five counties and more than 20 local governments with a large racially-mixed population of more than 3 million people. In 1982, research conducted by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) showed elevated levels of chemical contaminants in five species of fish and one type of crab in the Newark Bay Complex. Subsequently, the State of New Jersey adopted advisories to guide citizens on safe consumption practices for fish and crabs. Since then, fish consumption advisories have been issued primarily through the Fish and Game Digest, a publication distributed by the state to licensed anglers. However, anglers in the Complex are not required to have a fishing license because the waters are marine. Therefore, most anglers in this area do not receive advisory information. To gain greater insight into the information sources and risk perceptions of urban anglers, a survey was conducted of 300 anglers at 26 fishing and crabbing locations in the Newark Bay Complex during the summer and early fall of 1995. The objectives of the study were to learn anglers': (1) knowledge of fish consumption advisories; (2) belief in the advisories; (3) perception of how safe fish are to eat; (4) sources for information about fish and fishing; and (5) sources for information on fish consumption advisories. The study concluded that while 60% had heard about advisories, they either did not believe or were unconcerned about health effects from eating contaminated species. In addition, the most used source for information about fish and fishing was other fishermen, while newspapers were selected as a source for information about community news, health, and food safety.  相似文献

Environmental effects monitoring at the La Grande hydroelectric complex (Québec, Canada) revealed important increases in mercury levels in fish caught downstream from reservoirs. A study was carried out in 1997 immediately below the Caniapiscau Reservoir to identify by which components mercury is transported downstream from reservoirs and to assess the amount of mercury being exported. Stomach contents of lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) captured immediately below the Caniapiscau Reservoir were examined to determine which components transfer mercury from lower trophic levels to fish. The analyses of water samples and drifting organisms collected below the reservoir indicate that the dissolved fraction (< 0.45 microm) and the suspended particulate matter (0.45-50 microm) are the major components by which methylmercury is transferred downstream of reservoirs, accounting for 64 and 33%, respectively, of the total amounts exported. Drifting organisms such as plant debris, benthic invertebrates, fish, phytoplankton and zooplankton are much less important pathways for mercury export because of their very low biomass per water volume coming out of the generating station, as opposed to the high biomass of suspended particulate matter. However, zooplankton is the major component by which methylmercury is directly transferred to non-piscivorous fish downstream.  相似文献

Fish consumption rates derived from national surveys may not accurately reflect consumption rates in a particular population such as recreational anglers. Many state and local health agencies in the U.S. have conducted area-specific surveys to study fish consumption patterns in local populations, assess exposure to environmental contaminants, or evaluate compliance with fish advisories. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has analyzed the raw data from fish consumption surveys in Florida, Connecticut, Minnesota, and North Dakota for the purpose of deriving distributions of fish consumption rates and studying the variables that may be more predictive of high-end consumers. Distributions of fish consumption for different age cohorts, ethnic groups, socioeconomic statuses, types of fish (i.e., freshwater, marine, estuarine), and source of fish (i.e., store-bought versus self-caught) were derived. Consumption of fish and shellfish for those who consume both caught and bought fish is higher than those who reported eating only bought or only self-caught. Mean fish consumption per kilogram of body weight ranged from 0.11 g/kg-day to 2.3 g/kg-day. The highest values were observed in Florida for children 1<6 years of age. The Florida data show a statistically significant increase in the percentage of the population reporting fish and shellfish consumption with an increase in household income and education. The performances of two micromesh nets, which were physically similar but differed in weight of leadline (i.e. 120 g/m2 vs. 250 g/m2), to estimate the numbers of four species of fish (roach, gudgeon, perch and bream) were investigated on 51 occasions. These two nets were found to capture fish longer than 25 mm. Capture efficiency was found to vary according to design of net, species and size of fish. Both nets usually produced a reduction in numbers of fish caught with successive removals, although the heavy leadlined net was more likely to cause a reduction in catch and in a constant manner than the light leadlined net. The accuracy of the heavy leadlined net to estimate a known number of roach ≥90 mm and gudgeon ≥90 mm was tested on two occasions. The known number was within the 95% confidence limits of the population estimate for both species, although the precision of the estimate for gudgeon was low at one site. The precision of the within‐site estimates was found to vary according to the type of net, the species and size class, and the number of removals. Overall, the heavy leadlined net was found to be more useful but required greater manpower. The implications of these findings for survey design are discussed.  相似文献

The use of a pond-net to sample benthic macro-invertebrates is assessed as a technique for use in a national classification scheme for running water sites. In a field trial, 6 pond-net samples of 3 min duration were taken at each of 4 sites on the River Axe in south-west England. Three different people each took 2 samples at each of the sites. A comparison of the number of families and species caught indicated significant differences with respect to sites, operators and site x operator interactions. Significant inter-operator differences in the number of taxa removed from samples were also shown at the sample processing stage, but only at family level. Despite these differences, clustering and ordination procedures showed strong site faithfulness for each series of 6 samples when data were analysed at species level. Similar analyses at family level produced several misclassifications of samples with those from other sites. Most of these misclassifications were eliminated when categories of abundance were applied to the family level data. A 3 min sample collected approx. 62% of families and 50% of species that could be attained at a site by 18 min netting. The results of this field trial provided justification for the use of a pond-net as the principal sampling technique in the classification exercise.  相似文献

We have investigated the process of electromigration copper extraction from solid wastes when treating wastewaters of printed board production. We have determined conditions making it possible, when applying an external electric field on a wetted sludge dispersion, to extract > 80% of copper contained in the sludge with the copper efficiency > 50% and power consumption 5 to 10 kW h per 1 kg of the extracted copper at the voltage across the unit 3–10 V.  相似文献

A technically simple fish monitor was developed using the weakly electric fish, Gnathonemus petersi, as the test organism. The test system consists of a plexiglass test chamber (21., 27°C) with a flow-through of 4–5 times the chamber volume per hour. The spontaneous electric organ discharges (EOD) are recorded as activity signals. EODs, which have a potential of about 500 mV, last 0.3 ms and they can be converted to computer-compatible signals by a simple amplifier. The EOD-activity is analyzed by a low-cost desk-top computer. Two different modes of analysis which represent two levels of response sensitivity, are possible either alternatively or simultaneously. The toxicity response of Gnathonemus petersi was measured in experiments with the toxicants Hg2+, Cu2+, NaAsO2 and CN. The sensitivity to acutely toxic concentrations was found to be as high as that of trout or minnows.  相似文献

In January 2006 it was reported that Greenland halibut (Reinhardtius hippoglossoides) caught in the Barents Sea contained mercury levels that exceeded the EU's upper limit of 0.5 mg/kg wet weight for this species. To further investigate this finding, the National Institute of Nutrition and Seafood Research (NIFES) in Norway recently undertook a study to quantify the levels of mercury in Greenland halibut caught in the same area of the Barents Sea. A total of 120 Greenland halibut were caught in this area between the 28th and the 30th of January 2006. The fish were immediately frozen and shipped to the laboratory; individual fish were coded, weighed, defrosted, filleted and skinned before their mercury content was determined. Analyses were carried out on 65 individuals of Greenland halibut weighing from 0.81 kg to 7.1 kg, and 40 fish weighing more than 3 kg. The lowest mercury concentration found in muscle tissue (skinless and boneless fillet) was 0.019 mg/kg wet weight, in a fish that weighed 0.81 kg. The highest mercury concentration measured in muscle tissue was 1.1 mg/kg wet weight, from a fish that weighed 4.2 kg. Of the 65 fish analysed, 15 individuals with weight exceeding 3 kg had mercury concentrations in their muscle tissue exceeded the EU's upper limit.  相似文献

Mechanical behavior of lightweight soil reinforced with waste fishing net   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Lightweight soil is cement-treated and consists of dredged clayey soil, cement, and air-foam. Reinforced lightweight soil (RLS) contains waste fishing net to increase its shear strength. This paper investigates the strength characteristics and stress–strain behavior of reinforced and unreinforced lightweight soils. Test specimens were prepared with varying admixtures of cement content (8%, 12%, 16%, and 20% by the weight of untreated soil), initial water content (125%, 156%, 187%, 217%, and 250%), air-foam content (1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, and 5%), and waste fishing net (0%, 0.25%, 0.5%, 0.75%, and 1%). Then several series of unconfined compression tests and one-dimensional compression tests were conducted. The experiments with lightweight soil indicated that the unconfined compressive strength increased with an increase in cement content, but decreased with increasing water content and air-foam content. The stress–strain relationship and the unconfined compressive strength were influenced by the percentage of waste fishing net. In addition, the strength of RLS generally increased after adding waste fishing net due to the bond strength and the friction at the interface between waste fishing net and soil mixtures, but the amount of increase in compressive strength was not directly proportional to the percentage of waste fishing net. The results of testing indicated that the maximum increase in compressive strength was obtained for a waste fishing net content of about 0.25%. The bulk unit weight of lightweight soil was strongly dependent on the air-foam content. The compression characteristics of lightweight soil, including the yield stress and compression index, did not depend greatly on whether the samples were cured underwater or in air.  相似文献

It has been demonstrated that intensive fishing, i.e., removing more than 25% of the fish biomass, can reduce mercury levels in predator fish in a lake. We test here the hypothesis that, by removing an important part of the fish biomass from a lake, a significant amount of methylmercury can be eliminated, therefore reducing the mercury available to the remaining biota, at least in the short term. A mass burden approach is used to evaluate the partitioning of total mercury and methylmercury in natural lake ecosystems. Three small natural lakes from the James Bay territory, in northern Québec, Canada, were selected for intensive fishing. Mercury (Hg) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations were evaluated for sediments, water column (dissolved fraction and suspended particulate matter), plankton, aquatic invertebrates, and fish. Biomasses were determined for fish, plankton, and aquatic invertebrates. Two case scenarios are presented using different mercury contributions from the sediment component (1 cm depth, and no sediment). Our results for the scenario including the sediment contribution show that lake sediments represent over 98% of the total mercury while the biotic components represent less than 0.1% of the same burden. For methylmercury, fish account for up to 5% of the burden, while sediments make up 84.6% to 93.1%. If we put aside the sediment contribution, the methylmercury in fish partitioning can represent up to 48%. As for invertebrates, they can account for up to 48% of the total MeHg burden. We do not observe any change in the partitionings or the quantities of Hg and MeHg before and after fishing in either of the two case scenarios even when we do not take into account dynamics of the ecosystems. This will be all the more the case when the dynamics of the system are included in the analyses. Therefore, biological parameters such as growth rates or fish diet must be considered.  相似文献

Levels of fecal coliforms (FC), fecal streptococci (FS), Salmonella spp and enteric viruses were monitored in the water, sediment and fish in experimental wastewater-fish ponds near Benton, Arkansas, U.S.A. Concentrations of five heavy metals were also monitored in the fish and wastewater. Concentrations of indicator bacteria were reduced by as much as 99.7% through the series of six ponds which had a calculated total retention time of 72 days. Two filter-feeding species of Chinese carp, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix (silver carp) and Aristichthys nobilis (bighead carp), grown in the last three ponds accumulated FC and FS in their digestive tracts and skin at levels as great or greater than in the surrounding water and sediment. Only low levels of FC and FS were found in the fish muscle tissue (maximum of 25 FS per 100 g) even when concentrations of bacteria in the gut exceeded 105 per 100 g. Concentrations of bacteria in the water and sediment were not good predictors of concentrations in the fish. No Salmonella and no enteric viruses were isolated from the fish, but this lack of isolates was attributed to the extremely low levels which were present in the influent wastewater. Higher levels of copper and mercury were found in the fish flesh than in the surrounding water, with three of eleven fish samples containing higher than acceptable levels of mercury in the edible portion. Based on the efficiency of wastewater treatment, an aquaculture system using silver and bighead carp was judged to be a viable treatment system for domestic sewage resulting in a product suitable for animal or human consumption if proper precautions are taken in harvesting and processing the fish.  相似文献

A new early warning system for monitoring the quality of water was developed using the information conveyed by the continuous electric organ discharges of the tropical fish Apteronotus albifrons (Gymnotiformes, family Apteronotidae). The principle is based on the time characterisation of the electric signal emitted by the fish and uses the fact that the frequency and the form of the signal vary as a function of the physico-chemical quality of the ambient water. Eight test fish were individually confined in a heat-proof test chamber in which a continuous water current, thermo-regulated at 27°C, was maintained. The electric signal sampled over 1 s periods were amplified. The computer processed the signals and their frequencies and determined the coordinates of the points where the temperatures were recorded. The results of the A. albifrons electrical activity were then visualised on a visual display unit. Subsequent mathematical processing helped to detect unusual electrical behaviour (crossing of lower and upper bounds). To illustrate the principle of this new early warning system, the electric response of the A. albifrons exposed to cyanide was tested and compared with the detection thresholds of other biological early warning systems. A. albifrons is able to detect a cyanide concentration of 34.6 μg l−1 in less than half an hour. The recorded results suggest that this new biomonitor corresponds very well with the requirements of warning stations for surface waters subject to cyanide pollution.  相似文献

Natural and man‐made factors have shown the ability to change the freshwater fish environment in Iraq over the last 6000 years. Changes in climate were among the major natural factors that caused a significant alteration in the distribution and abundance of freshwater fish in Mesopotamia. However, man‐made factors contribute more to the impact on the freshwater system in Iraq and ultimately on the freshwater dwellings, e.g. fish. There are a number of industrial factors, such as water abstraction by dams, devegetation, heavy fishing, pollution and species introduction, that have played a major role in the destruction of the freshwater fish habitat in Iraq and as a result real and more effective conservation measures need to be proposed.  相似文献

In order to avoid the illegal use of fishing boat fuel A (FBFA) by traveling diesel vehicles (TDVs) in Taiwan, alternatives that are easily distinguished from premium diesel fuel (PDF) were prepared to evaluate their suitability. Two new ingredients, pyrolysis fuel oil (PFO) and residue of desulfurization unit (RDS), were added into FBFA and formed PFO0.5 and RDS0.5, respectively. Along with FBFA, these three fuels were analyzed for their chemical and physical properties. Furthermore, they were used by three fishing boats with different sizes, output powers, and weights. The engine performances and pollutant emissions were examined and monitored. Experimental results show that there are significant differences in appearance between PDF and the two new blended fuels (PFO0.5 and RDS0.5), and thus misuse or illegal use of FBFA could be substantially reduced. The fuel consumption, which is negatively related to the heating value of fuels, is in order of FBFA < PFO0.5 = RDS0.5. In contrast with using FBFA in the three fishing boats, using RDS0.5 resulted in a decrease in CO and NOx emissions, while the PM emission factors (g bhp− 1 h− 1 and g L− 1-fuel) were reduced by approximately 36% and 33%, respectively. Owing to the higher total aromatic content in PFO0.5 and RDS0.5, total-PAH concentrations in the exhausts from the three fishing boats using PFO0.5 and RDS0.5 were slightly (1.2 and 1.1 times, respectively) higher than for those using FBFA. Nevertheless, the estimated total BaPeq from the three fishing boats using RDS0.5 was 27.5, 19.5, and 8.25% lower than those using FBFA. With using PFO0.5, they were totally different, at 23.5, 2.79, and 2.58% higher. With regard to looking different to PDF, RDS0.5 is superior to PFO0.5, and is thus recommended as a better alternative to FBFA, particularly because it can help lower more emissions of CO, NOx, PM and BaPeq.  相似文献
