The use of heat pump tumble dryers is nowadays more common because they offer huge energy savings compared to conventional tumble dryers. Earlier studies made on conventional tumble dryers have shown that parameters such as heater power, fan speed, drum speed, weight and initial moisture content of textiles and air leakage have a huge impact on the energy efficiency and drying time. In the present study, a modified commercial heat pump tumble dryer was evaluated for energy consumption and drying time by changing operating parameters including fan speed, drum speed, and mass load. The total energy consumption and drying time were measured and corrected for the initial and final moisture content in the textiles. The experimental results based on 27 drying tests were evaluated to develop linear regression models for energy consumption and drying time, which show a good agreement with the experimental data. The results show that a large mass load, a high drum speed, and a low fan speed give the highest energy efficiency, i.e. the lowest energy consumption per kg of drying load. Larger loads extend the length of the drying cycle while higher fan and drum speeds result in shorter drying time.  相似文献

Improving the energy efficiency of clothes dryers has been the subject of numerous investigations. However, to date the clothes drying process has not been thoroughly tested or analyzed in a comprehensive study. Many of the techniques that have been proposed to improve energy efficiency add to dryer cost or are environmentally unacceptable. In the present study, a commercial Frigidaire dryer was instrumented and evaluated for energy performance by changing operating parameters including heater power, fan speed, drum speed, weight, and initial moisture content of the clothes. The total drying time and energy consumption was monitored as well as the effect of air leakage into the drum. The experimental results from 32 runs of the dryer were evaluated. The results from these tests are discussed and techniques are proposed in an attempt to improve the energy efficiency of this unit.  相似文献

The diiffusion model describing internal diiffusion of moisture within a grain kernel during drying and tempering stages was incorporated in the cross-flow drying model to simulate the recirculating circular grain dryer with drying and tempering stages. Experiments were conducted on an experimental prototype recirculating circular grain dryer for wheat and rough rice drying. The simulated grain temperature and moisture content were compared with the experimental data of drying wheat and rough rice, the maximum deviation of the outlet grain temperature was 5°C and the maximum deviation ofthe final grain moisture content was 0.3% w.b. The simulating program for recirculating circular grain dryer was used for analyzing the effects of structure parameters and hot air parameters on the dryer performance. Recommendations for design of the recirculating circular grain dryers are drawn from the experiments and simulation.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The performance of three different types of dryers for the hot air drying of sawn-limber planks are compared. These were the electric resistance dryer, solar dryer, and the dehumidifier dryer. Whilst the electric and solar dryers depended only upon hot air for drying, the dehumidifier dryer relied on hot dehumidified air. The results of investigations carried out on timber drying employing these three types of dryers in the Engineering Faculty are compiled and compared here in this paper. The results showed that the electric dryer produced the fastest drying lime and lowest moisture content, followed by dehumidifier drying. The solar dryer achieved a lower moisture content and a faster drying rate compared to natural drying, although the difference in drying times was marginal.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

A mathematical model of a heat pump fruit dryer was developed to study the performance of heat pump dryers. Using the moisture content of papaya glace' drying, the refrigerant temperature at the evaporator and condenser and the performance, was verified. It was found that the simulated results using closed loop heat pump dryer were close to the experimental results. The criteria for evaluating the performance were specific moisture extraction rate and drying rate. The results showed that ambient conditions affected significantly on the performance of the open loop dryer and the partially closed loop dryer. Also, the fraction of evaporator bypass air affected markedly on the performance of all heat pump dryers. In addition, it was found that specific air flow rate and drying air temperature affected significantly the performance of all heat pump dryers.  相似文献

A mathematical model able to predict solid and drying gas temperature and moisture content axial profiles along a direct contact rotary dryer was developed. The study was focused on the drying kinetics based on phenomenological models. Two different drying mechanisms in the decreasing drying rate period were tested: proponional to the unbound moisture content and moisture diffusion inside the particle. Experimental data collected in a pilot-scale direct contact rotary dryer was used to validate the model. Soya and fish meals were used as drying material.  相似文献

In spite of the fact that the principles of impinging stream reactors have been developed for more than half a century, the performance analysis of such devices, from a viewpoint of the mathematical modeling, has not been investigated extensively. In this study two models are proposed to describe the drying performance of particulate materials in two-impinging stream dryers. The models are developed based on the Markov chain analysis and the tanks-in-series model. The required parameters for each model are determined by using RTD data obtained in a two-impinging stream dryer and the governing equations are solved numerically. Comparison of the results of the models with available experimental data shows that the stirred tanks-in-series model successfully explains the drying behavior in impinging stream dryers. Nevertheless, the results of the model that is developed based on the Markov chain analysis are not in exact agreement with corresponding experimental data because of the extremely short residence time of the particles inside the dryer. Also, the effects of some operating parameters on the performance of such dryers are investigated. The results indicate that the drying efficiency of the dryer increases when solid-to-gas flow rate ratio, initial moisture content, and diameter of the particles decrease and when the temperature of the carrier gas increases.  相似文献

Pneumatic conveying drying (PCD) is a combination of heat and mass transfer and pneumatic handling technology. This technology has been extensively used in chemical, pharmaceutical, and food industries, as well as many others. The PCD technique is beneficial for agricultural products, because it can achieve high-quality drying with reduced heat damage in a very short time. In this study, one-dimensional and three-dimensional mathematical models for the drying of sawdust particles in a pneumatic dryer were developed and verified with experiments. The three-dimensional modeling was done with a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) package (ANSYS FLUENT, Ver. 13.0, Ansys, Inc.), in which the gas phase is modeled as a continuum using the Euler approach, and the droplet/particle phase is modeled by a discrete phase model with a Lagrange approach. One-dimensional analysis was performed in MATLAB (Ver. 7.0). The experiments were carried out to validate the model in a pneumatic dryer with a horizontal length of 1 m, vertical height of 1.1 m, and diameter of 0.14 m. Sawdust, a raw material used for producing pellets, was prepared from well-seasoned pinewood timber. The initial moisture content of the sawdust was 22% (wb). The hot air inlet temperature in the dryer was fixed at 100°C. The variations in air pressure, air velocity, air temperature, and particle moisture content were investigated along the length of the dryer. The final moisture contents of sawdust and air temperature were reduced by 2% (wb) and 5°C, respectively. The simulated values were in good agreement with the experimental values. The developed model was then employed for the design of a pilot-scale pneumatic dryer (length 7 m and diameter 0.14 m). The final moisture content of the sawdust particles was reduced to 14% (wb) when the dryer length was increased from 1 to 7 m. In addition, the modeling was performed using buffers in the pilot-scale dryers. The use of a buffer noticeably increased the drying efficiency.  相似文献

A SIMPLE DYNAMIC MODEL FOR SOLID TRANSPORT IN ROTARY DRYERS   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The solid particle movement in a rotary drum plays an important role in drying processes. The solid distribution in the drum affects the amount of contact surface between the solid and the gas. The retention time of solids influences the time particles can stay in contact with the gas in order to transfer heat and mass. Any heat and mass transfer model for a solid particle dryer must be able to predict solid flowrate and solid hold-up. There have been several reports in the literature regarding the modelling aspects of solid transport in dryers. If the model is developed for model-based control, it must be simple and yet represent dynamics of the system accurately. This paper addresses solid motion modelling and the effects of different variables involved in solid transport phenomena. Sugar drying process is the case study in this work. A steady state semi-empirical model was modified to predict solid hold-up and flowrate in rotary dryers. This model was incorporated into a heat and mass transfer model ;o predict solid moisture and temperature for inferential and model-based control purposes. Results of several experiments that have been used to investigate dynamics of the system in terms of solid motion and to validate the model are also presented. The approach advocated in this paper is directly applicable to the transport of other solids in rotary drum equipment and can thus be regarded as a generalized model.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to demonstrate the effects of the drum wall temperature on the heat and mass transfer in rotary dryers. The drying characteristics of flexible filamentous particles in rotary dryers were further explored. In addition, the inlet and outlet temperatures and moisture contents of granular particles were measured. As a result, the good agreement between the simulations and experiments verified the rationale and feasibility of the numerical method. Therefore, the approach was adopted to evaluate the temperature and moisture content of wet granular particles in a rotary dryer in different conditions, for instance, drum wall temperature and rotational speed. The results revealed that the higher drum wall temperature led to hotter particles with lower outlet moisture content. Conversely, the higher rotational speed resulted in cooler particles with higher outlet moisture content due to the decrease of residence time in the rotary dryer.  相似文献

A computerized mathematical model was developed to predict fractional drying and aerodynamic separation of alfalfa into leaves and stems in one process in a rotary dryer. Aerodynamic separation was characterized by separation efficiency or the total amount of the desired component (leaf or stem) recovered, relative to the amount entering the process, and by purity of leaf or stem component collected at exit ports of the dryer. The model development assumed 100% separation efficiency and purity. The model was validated by comparing model predicted results with measured experimental and field test data obtained from a small industrial rotary dryer and a full-scale industrial dryer. Changes in leaf, stem, and drying gas moisture contents and temperatures were measured and predicted by the model under various drying conditions. The model-predicted results agreed well with measured data. The model was also used to simulate the performance of industrial rotary dryers under various operating conditions. The model can be used to determine the optimum drying and aerodynamic separation parameters. It can also be used to design and redesign new and existing industrial rotary dryers in order to combine drying and aerodynamic separation into one process.  相似文献

A method, based on the analysis of heat transfer, is developed for the design of contact dryers in thin film boiling for sludge treatment. An experimental device was built in order to estimate the heat flux density exchanged between a hot metallic plate and the drying sample. This specific device is made of a thick copper plate heated at a temperature above 100°C, on which the sludge is coated. The contact temperature and the heat flux density are estimated using a temperature sensor inside the copper block, and an inverse conduction method (Beck's sequential function specification method). The corresponding drying curve is deduced from an energy balance. Sludge drying was studied on an electrically heated laboratory continuous drum dryer. A simple steady state model of the drum dryer was developed by taking into account the combined effects of internal and external transfers. This model is validated by comparison with drying curves obtained from sampling and simulation. In this case, the relative importance of internal and external heat transfers is highlighted.  相似文献

Closed-loop drying systems are an attractive alternative to conventional drying systems because they provide a wide range of potential advantages. Consequently, type of drying process is attracting increased interest. Rotary drying of wood particles can be assumed as an incorporated process involving fluid–solid interactions and simultaneous heat and mass transfer within and between the particles. Understanding these mechanisms during rotary drying processes may result in determination of the optimum drying parameters and improved dryer design. In this study, due to the complexity and nonlinearity of the momentum, heat, and mass transfer equations, a computerized mathematical model of a closed-loop triple-pass concurrent rotary dryer was developed to simulate the drying behavior of poplar wood particles within the dryer drums. Wood particle moisture content and temperature, drying air temperature, and drying air humidity ratio along the drums lengths can be simulated using this model. The model presented in this work has been shown to successfully predict the steady-state behavior of a concurrent rotary dryer and can be used to analyze the effects of various drying process parameters on the performance of the closed-loop triple-pass rotary dryer to determine the optimum drying parameters. The model was also used to simulate the performance of industrial closed-loop rotary dryers under various operating conditions.  相似文献

The items to be considered prior to selection of dryers are explained, and a simple method for a rough estimation of dryer sizes was proposed based on data obtained from operating industrial dryers.

The equations of basic design for batch or continuous type dryers were derived. The heat was supplied to materials by convection and/or conduction. The equations were simplified to the case when the falling rate of drying is proportional to the moisture content of materials under the constant drying conditions. The heat transfer coefficient used in the equations can be determined based on the calculations or the data obtained from the experimental or industrial dryers. The equations are useful for estimating the scale-up effect of dryers.  相似文献

This study applied a partial differential equation model with newly-developed thin layer equations to simulate batch re-circulating dryers under different drying conditions, which are combinations of four parameters: drying air temperature, drying air absolute humidity, drying period duration, and tempering period duration. The moisture change and the drying rate, which were of particular concern with respect to the simulated data, were investigated. Validation drying tests were carried out in a lab scale re-circulating rice dryer. Two sets of experiment were performed involving different drying parameters to simulate re-circulating rice dryers which are extensively used in Asian countries. Comparing these two experimental data with two simulated drying curves respectively, it revealed they are quite consist with each other under the same drying conditions. Drying air temperature, drying air humidity, drying period duration and tempering period duration significantly influenced the drying rate. Under the same drying condition, the tempering period duration effect was insignificant to the drying rate in drying zone as the drying air humidity or temperature increased. And, a higher initial moisture content obtained higher time and energy efficiency for the re-circulating rice dryers.  相似文献
