Interlaminar tensile shear tests are conducted to study the degradation mechanisms of electron irradiated glass or carbon cloth reinforced epoxy laminates. Interlaminar shear strength decreases significantly after the dose exceeds 3000 Mrad for glass/epoxy, but remains constant up to 12 000 Mrad for carbon/epoxy. SEM photos reveal that debonding of glass fibres and epoxy matrix (or degradation of silane coupling agents) plays an important role in the dose-dependent strength reduction of glass/epoxy laminates. The decrease in the interlaminar shear strength corresponds to that in the three-point bending strength. On the other hand, the SEM fracture appearance is almost dose-independent for carbon/epoxy laminates. In addition, some preliminary irradiation tests are conducted at –120° C to observe the effects of irradiation temperatures.  相似文献

The optimum condition of glass fiber/epoxy composites was investigated according to mixing ratio of two epoxy matrices. Novolac type epoxy and isocyanate modified epoxy were used as composites matrix. Based on chemical composition of mixing matrix, optimum mixing ratio of epoxy resins was obtained through FT-IR instrument. In order to investigate thermal stability and interface of epoxy resin, glass transition temperature was observed by DSC instrument, and static contact angle was measured by reflecting microscope. Change of IR peak and Tg was conformed according to different epoxy mixing ratios. After fabrication of glass fiber/epoxy composites, tensile, compression, and flexural properties were tested by UTM by room and high temperature. The composites exhibited best mechanical properties when epoxy mixing ratio was 1:1.  相似文献

Mechanical and thermal properties of non-crimp glass fiber reinforced clay/epoxy nanocomposites were investigated. Clay/epoxy nanocomposite systems were prepared to use as the matrix material for composite laminates. X-ray diffraction results obtained from natural and modified clays indicated that intergallery spacing of the layered clay increases with surface treatment. Tensile tests indicated that clay loading has minor effect on the tensile properties. Flexural properties of laminates were improved by clay addition due to the improved interface between glass fibers and epoxy. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results showed that the modified clay particles affected the glass transition temperatures (Tg) of the nanocomposites. Incorporation of surface treated clay particles increased the dynamic mechanical properties of nanocomposite laminates. It was found that the flame resistance of composites was improved significantly by clay addition into the epoxy matrix.  相似文献

Transverse fracture of unidirectional fibre composites was studied in a model glass/epoxy composite in which 1 mm-diameter rods had been used in place of fibres. The fracture surface resulting from transverse cracking in this model system was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The interaction of the crack with the epoxy matrix resin and the glass rods was the following: Cracks in the resin appeared to have effected a debonding at the glassmatrix interface before reaching the glass. The debonding then propagated along the interface and induced secondary cracks ahead of the primary debonding crack. The confluence of the secondary and primary cracks resulted in sharp ridges being formed on the matrix resin surface, produced by plastic deformation of the rigid epoxy resin. These appeared as a field of parabolic marks. Considering the brittleness of the resin, the amount of plastic deformation indicated by the ridges was astonishing. As the debonding continued around the glass rod, a transverse corrugated texture developed on the resin surface, again produced by plastic deformation. Finally, the cracks reentered the matrix from small patches of polymer adhering especially strongly to the glass surface. The overall fracture energy of transverse cracking of unidirectional fibre composites is suggested to consist, therefore, of the following elements in addition to crack propagation in the matrix resin: (a) the glass-resin debonding before the incoming cracks reach the glass, (b) the initiation of secondary cracks or debonds at the interface, (c) the plastic deformation in generating the ridges on the rigid resin surface, appearing both as the paraboloids and the transverse corrugation, and (d) cracking of the matrix reinitiated at the opposite side of the glass. The use of an enlarged glass reinforcement in this study provided a more direct observation of the properties of transverse crack propagation in composite materials than would have been possible with the small, roughly 10m fibres.  相似文献

SiO2/epoxy nanocomposites were prepared using diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-F (DGEBF) type epoxy and tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) via the sol-gel process. Silica nanoparticles were collected after burning off the matrix resin and the silica nanoparticles were observed using TEM. The cryogenic tensile properties at 77 K and thermal expansion coefficient of the nanocomposites were studied. The tensile properties at room temperature were also given to compare with the cryogenic tensile properties. The fracture surfaces were examined with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The effects of silica nanoparticle content have been studied on the cryogenic tensile and thermal properties of the nanocomposites. In addition, the dependence of the glass transition temperature on the silica nanoparticle content has also been examined.  相似文献

It is an obstacle issue for carbon nanotubes (CNTs) particularly for single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with nano-level dispersion in fiber reinforced polymer matrix composites. In this paper, the dispersing agents such as Volan and BYK-9076 were employed to treat SWCNTs to improve their dispersion in the glass fiber/epoxy (GF/EP) composites. The dispersing results of SWCNTs in composites were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Then the glass transition temperature (Tg) of these kinds of composites with treated and untreated SWCNTs were obtained by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA). Moreover, the flexural tests were performed on these composites. Based on the experiment results, the dispersion of SWCNTs was improved and the flexural property of SWCNTs/GF/EP composite was enhanced too.  相似文献

A styrene-modified diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA) epoxy system cured with trimellitic anhydride (TMA) has been investigated to explore processing and structure relationships. During cure, the reactive styrene precipitated with polymerization into phase domains separate from the epoxy phase. Dynamic mechanical analysis and microscopy studies were performed to gain insight to matrix structure. The DMA studies showed that the styrenemodified epoxy system after cure exhibited two partially overlapped but distinct relaxation peaks, which are associated with the T gs of the polystyrene and epoxy phases. The glass transition of the polystyrene phase was shown to be broadened and the T g to depend strongly on processing temperature profiles. While the T g of the epoxy phase increases with curing agent concentrations, the T g of the polystyrene phase does not. Microscopic studies showed that the styrene-modified system exhibited a rougher fracture surface but did not reveal well defined phase domains in which the precipitated polystyrene component was aggregated. Overall, the study has demonstrated correlations of the kinetic factors in controlling the morphology in reactive modifier-epoxy systems.  相似文献

Nickel-Pitch-based carbon fibres (Ni-PFs) were prepared by electroless nickel-plating to enhance fracture toughness of Ni-PFs reinforced epoxy matrix composites (Ni-PFs/epoxy). The surface properties of Ni-PFs were determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The fracture toughness of the Ni-PFs/epoxy was assessed by critical stress intensity factor (KIC) and critical strain energy release rate (GIC). The fracture toughness of Ni-PFs/epoxy was enhanced compared to those of PFs/epoxy. These results were attributed to the increase of the degree of adhesion at interfaces between Ni-PFs and matrix resins in the composites.  相似文献

The matrix of carbon fiber/SC-15 epoxy composites was modified with Nanomer® I-28E nanoclay, a surface modified montmorillonite mineral, to determine the effects of particle reinforcement on the response of these materials to flexural and thermomechanical loading. Different weight percentages of nanoclay were dispersed in SC-15 epoxy using sonication route. The nanophased epoxy was then used to manufacture plain weave carbon/epoxy nanocomposites using hand-layup process followed by vacuum bagging. Control samples of woven carbon fiber/epoxy were fabricated for comparison purposes. Effect of post curing on these samples was also investigated. 3-point bend flexure and Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) studies were carried out on 8- and 3-layered samples respectively. Results of flexural tests indicate significant improvements in flexural strength and modulus for nanoclay reinforced composites as compared to the control samples. DMA studies also showed enhancement in thermomechanical properties especially in storage modulus though no appreciable change was noticed in glass transition temperature, T g. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies were carried out to comprehend the effect of nanoclay on the microstructure and the failure modes.  相似文献

EP/SiO2 nanocomposites, which contained PEO flexible chain, have been prepared via epoxy resin and PEO-grafted silica particles. The PEO-silica particles were obtained by endcapping PEO-1000 with toluene 2,4-diisocyanate (TDI), followed by a reaction with silica sols. The chemical structure of the products was confirmed by IR measurements, and the mechanical properties of composites such as impact strength, flexural strength, dynamic mechanical thermal properties were investigated. The results showed that the addition of the PEO-grafted silica particles to the epoxy/DDS curing system, the impact strength is 2 times higher than that of the neat epoxy. While the storage modulus and the glass transition temperature are a little changed. The morphological structure of impact fracture surface and the surface of the hybrid materials were observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), respectively.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study is to develop novel nanocomposites based on diglycidylether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) combined with diglycidylether-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (DG-PDMS), reinforced with 10 wt.% (mono-/octa) epoxy POSS nanocages (MEP or OEP-POSS). DG-PDMS and POSS compounds were covalently incorporated into DGEBA resin via copolymerization of epoxy groups. The effect of both DG-PDMS and POSS nanoparticles on the curing reaction, glass transition temperature (Tg), thermal stability, hardness and morphology of DGEBA/DG-PDMS ± POSS nanocomposites were studied by DSC, FTIR, DMA, TGA, SEM/EDX, AFM and contact angle measurements. SEM/EDX and AFM results prove that OEP-POSS is well dispersed within DGEBA/DG-PDMS polymer matrix, while MEP-POSS forms large POSS aggregates. The thermo-mechanical properties of POSS based nanocomposites are also in good correlation with morphology features. MEP-POSS based nanocomposite with heterogeneous dispersion of POSS aggregates exhibits lower Tg value and thermal stability in comparison with OEP-POSS nanocomposite which exhibits a nanoscale dispersion of the POSS cages. The obtained Tg of OEP-POSS based nanocomposite increases with 31 °C in comparison with the unreinforced matrix. Moreover, this nanocomposite shows the highest storage modulus (E′) and hardness.  相似文献

It is understood that small amount of nanoclay in the neat epoxy and fiber reinforced epoxy composite system improves the mechanical properties. The mechanical properties of most of polymer matrix composites are rate sensitive. Most of the researches have concentrated on the behavior of the polymer composites at high strain rates. The present research work is to study the effect of clay on neat epoxy and glass/epoxy composites, at low strain rates. The clay in terms of 1.5, 3 and 5 wt% are dispersed in the epoxy resin using mechanical stirrer followed by sonication process. The glass/epoxy nanocomposites are prepared by impregnating the glass fiber with epoxy–clay mixture by hand lay-up process followed by compression molding. Characterization of the nanoclay is done by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Tensile stress–strain curves are obtained at strain rates of 10−4, 10−3, 10−2 and 10−1 s−1 by a servo-hydraulic machine and the variation of modulus, strength and failure strain with strain rate are determined. The results show that, even at low strain rates, the longitudinal strength and stiffness increase as strain rate increases for all clay loadings. It is observed that the tensile modulus increases as the clay loading increases for both epoxy and glass/epoxy nanocomposites. Scanning electron microscopy is used to study the adhesion of composites in fracture surfaces.  相似文献

Transparent epoxy resins modified with liquid chloroprene rubber (LCR), containing in a category of rubber-toughened resin were found. Transparency and toughness characterization of the modified epoxy resins were investigated as a function of LCR content. Epoxy resins modified with 0–10 vol % LCR showed complete phase-separation microstructure. However, these modified resins were transparent, because the refractive index of LCR was compatible with that of the epoxy resin matrix at room temperature. On the other hand, it was observed that above 10 vol % LCR, a certain amount of LCR dissolved into the epoxy matrix. In this case, the glass transition temperature decreased with increasing LCR content. It was also found that the critical stress intensity factor, K c, of the modified epoxy resins exhibited a maximum between 10 and 15 vol % LCR.  相似文献

The viscoelastic behavior of a carbon fiber/epoxy matrix composite material system used for pipeline repair has been evaluated though dynamic mechanical analysis. The effects of the heating rate, frequency, and measurement method on the glass transition temperature (Tg) were studied. The increase in Tg with frequency was related to the activation energy of the glass transition relaxation. The activation energy can be used for prediction of long term performance. The measured tan delta peak Tg’s of room temperature cured and post-cured composite specimens ranged from 60 to 129 °C. Analysis of Tg data at various cure states was used to determine use temperature limits for the composite repair system.  相似文献

Two types of laminate composites made of glass fibre/epoxy matrix (EPO_FV) and glass fibre/epoxy modified tri-block copolymer (Nanostrength) matrix (EPONS_FV) were manufactured by compression moulding. Some AFM investigations have been done to identify the Nanostrength dispersion in the epoxy matrix and some DMA analyses have been performed, at different frequencies, to understand the frequency or the strain rate sensitivity of both composites. Compared to EPO_FV, EPONS_FV exhibits a significant frequency/strain rate sensitivity. Impact resistance of the composite was investigated by means of low velocity impact tests. The low velocity impact results indicate that the addition of Nanostrength leads to the improved impact resistance and an increase in absorbed energy, especially at high impact energy level. SEM observations, performed on ion polished samples, reveal the presence of micro-cracks for both composites. Micro-cracks consist of a coalescence of fibre matrix de-bonding. It was also observed that EPONS_FV contains a lower density of micro-cracks compared to EPO_FV, confirming the fact that the composite with Nanostrength absorbs more energy by Nanostrength micelles cavitation.  相似文献

An experimental study has been carried out to investigate the bearing strength behavior of pinned joints of glass fiber reinforced composite filled with different proportions of Al2O3 particles, as a function of filler loading and joint geometry. The weight fractions of the filler in the matrix were 7.5, 10, and 15%. Single-hole pin-loaded specimens of each composite material were tested in tension. The results show that the bearing strength of glass fiber reinforced epoxy composites pinned joints is associated with the filler content and geometric parameters. The increase of the Al2O3 particle loading in the matrix improved the bearing strength of the composites. The highest bearing strengths were obtained for composite specimens with 10 wt.% Al2O3 particle content. Further increases in the Al2O3 particle content in the matrix resulted in a decrease of the bearing strength, but remains above that of the unfilled glass reinforced epoxy composites.  相似文献

The paper is based on a study to develop carbon–glass epoxy hybrid composites with desirable thermal properties for applications at cryogenic temperatures. It analyzes the coefficient of thermal expansion of carbon–epoxy and glass–epoxy composite materials and compares it with the properties of carbon–glass epoxy hybrid composites in the temperature range 300 K to 125 K. Urethane modified epoxy matrix system is used to make the composite specimens suitable for use even for temperatures as low as 20 K. It is noted that the lay-up with 80% of carbon fibers in the total volume fraction of fibers oriented at 30° and 20% of glass fibers oriented at 0° yields near to zero coefficient of thermal expansion as the temperature is lowered from ambient to 125 K.  相似文献

Leaf fibres from Phormium tenax (harakeke, New Zealand flax) were pulped at 170 °C with NaOH and anthraquinone. The pulp was wet laid to form mats, which were used to reinforce epoxy composites. The flexural modulus was almost as high as that measured for epoxy reinforced with glass chopped strand mat at the same weight fraction. The flexural strength was two-thirds that of the glass-reinforced composite. Failure was abrupt. SEM images showed torn fragments of fibre cell walls protruding from the fracture surface, indicating strong interfacial bonding. Good mechanical performance was attributed to the rarity of kink bands in the individual fibre cells, along with wrinkled cell-wall surfaces that enhanced the area of the fibre–matrix interface.  相似文献
