An energy analysis of three typical solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) power systems fed by methane is carried out with detailed thermodynamic model. Simple SOFC system, hybrid SOFC‐gas turbine (GT) power system, and SOFC‐GT‐steam turbine (ST) power system are compared. The influences of air ratio and operative pressure on the performance of SOFC power systems are investigated. The net system electric efficiency and cogeneration efficiency of these power systems are given by the calculation model. The results show that internal reforming SOFC power system can achieve an electrical efficiency of more than 49% and a system cogeneration efficiency including waste heat recovery of 77%. For SOFC‐GT system, the electrical efficiency and cogeneration efficiency are 61% and 80%, respectively. Although SOFC‐GT‐ST system is more complicated and has high investment costs, the electrical efficiency of it is close to that of SOFC‐GT system. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The performance of three solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) systems, fuelled by biogas produced through anaerobic digestion (AD) process, for heat and electricity generation in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is studied. Each system has a different fuel processing method to prevent carbon deposition over the anode catalyst under biogas fuelling. Anode gas recirculation (AGR), steam reforming (SR), and partial oxidation (POX) are the methods employed in systems I-III, respectively. A planar SOFC stack used in these systems is based on the anode-supported cells with Ni-YSZ anode, YSZ electrolyte and YSZ-LSM cathode, operated at 800 °C. A computer code has been developed for the simulation of the planar SOFC in cell, stack and system levels and applied for the performance prediction of the SOFC systems. The key operational parameters affecting the performance of the SOFC systems are identified. The effect of these parameters on the electrical and CHP efficiencies, the generated electricity and heat, the total exergy destruction, and the number of cells in SOFC stack of the systems are studied. The results show that among the SOFC systems investigated in this study, the AGR and SR fuel processor-based systems with electrical efficiency of 45.1% and 43%, respectively, are suitable to be applied in WWTPs. If the entire biogas produced in a WWTP is used in the AGR or SR fuel processor-based SOFC system, the electricity and heat required to operate the WWTP can be completely self-supplied and the extra electricity generated can be sold to the electrical grid.  相似文献

Three configurations of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) micro-combined heat and power (micro-CHP) systems are studied with a particular emphasis on the application for single-family detached dwellings. Biogas is considered to be the primary fuel for the systems studied. In each system, a different method is used for processing the biogas fuel to prevent carbon deposition over the anode of the cells used in the SOFC stack. The anode exit gas recirculation, steam reforming, and partial oxidation are the methods employed in systems I–III, respectively. The results predicted through computer simulation of these systems confirm that the net AC electrical efficiency of around 42.4%, 41.7% and 33.9% are attainable for systems I–III, respectively. Depending on the size, location and building type and design, all the systems studied are suitable to provide the domestic hot water and electric power demands for residential dwellings. The effect of the cell operating voltage at different fuel utilization ratios on the number of cells required for the SOFC stack to generate around 1 kW net AC electric power, the thermal-to-electric ratio (TER), the net AC electrical and CHP efficiencies, the biogas fuel consumption, and the excess air required for controlling the SOFC stack temperature is also studied through a detailed sensitivity analysis. The results point out that the cell design voltage is higher than the cell voltage at which the minimum number of cells is obtained for the SOFC stack.  相似文献

The evaluation of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) combined heat and power (CHP) system configurations for application in residential dwellings is explored through modeling and simulation of cell-stacks including the balance-of-plant equipment. Five different SOFC system designs are evaluated in terms of their energetic performance and suitability for meeting residential thermal-to-electric ratios. Effective system concepts and key performance parameters are identified. The SOFC stack performance is based on anode-supported planar geometry. A cell model is scaled-up to predict voltage–current performance characteristics when served with either hydrogen or methane fuel gas sources. System comparisons for both fuel types are made in terms of first and second law efficiencies. The results indicate that maximum efficiency is achieved when cathode and anode gas recirculation is used along with internal reforming of methane. System electric efficiencies of 40% HHV (45% LHV) and combined heat and power efficiencies of 79% (88% LHV) are described. The amount of heat loss from small-scale SOFC systems is included in the analyses and can have an adverse impact on CHP efficiency. Performance comparisons of hydrogen-fueled versus methane-fueled SOFC systems are also given. The comparisons indicate that hydrogen-based SOFC systems do not offer efficiency performance advantages over methane-fueled SOFC systems. Sensitivity of this result to fuel cell operating parameter selection demonstrates that the magnitude of the efficiency advantage of methane-fueled SOFC systems over hydrogen-fueled ones can be as high as 6%.  相似文献

Multi-energy complementary distributed energy system integrated with renewable energy is at the forefront of energy sustainable development and is an important way to achieve energy conservation and emission reduction. A comparative analysis of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC)-micro gas turbine (MGT)-combined cooling, heating and power (CCHP) systems coupled with two solar methane steam reforming processes is presented in terms of energy, exergy, environmental and economic performances in this paper. The first is to couple with the traditional solar methane steam reforming process. Then the produced hydrogen-rich syngas is directly sent into the SOFC anode to produce electricity. The second is to couple with the medium-temperature solar methane membrane separation and reforming process. The produced pure hydrogen enters the SOFC anode to generate electricity, and the remaining small amount of fuel gas enters the afterburner to increase the exhaust gas enthalpy. Both systems transfer the low-grade solar energy to high-grade hydrogen, and then orderly release energy in the systems. The research results show that the solar thermochemical efficiency, energy efficiency and exergy efficiency of the second system reach 52.20%, 77.97% and 57.29%, respectively, 19.05%, 7.51% and 3.63% higher than those of the first system, respectively. Exergy analysis results indicate that both the solar heat collection process and the SOFC electrochemical process have larger exergy destruction. The levelized cost of products of the first system is about 0.0735$/h that is lower than that of the second system. And these two new systems have less environmental impact, with specific CO2 emissions of 236.98 g/kWh and 249.89 g/kWh, respectively.  相似文献

A thermal and electrochemical model is developed for the simulation of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) cogeneration system in this study. The modeling algorithms of electrochemical and thermal models are described. Since the fuel cell stack itself is only a single component within the whole SOFC system, the modeling of the balance-of-plant (BOP) components is also performed to assess the system-level performance. Using the new model, a parametric analysis is carried out to investigate the effects of fuel flow rate, extent of methane gas pre-reforming, fuel utilization factor, recycling rate of cathode gas and cell voltage on the overall system performance. As a result of the parametric study, fuel flow rate, cell voltage, fuel utilization and recycling rate of cathode gas turned out to improve system power output. In addition, the internal reforming turned out to have advantage over external reforming in terms of system power supply.  相似文献

Fuel cell systems are always said to show high electrical efficiency. The results achieved up to now, however, differ considerably, especially between the various fuel cell types all using natural gas as fuel. With the presented study the reasons for the different results and general potentials for fuel cell systems are highlighted. For that purpose several system lay-out concepts were elaborated for PEFC, PAFC and SOFC.The performed energy balance calculations for eight different plant concepts (three PEFC, two PAFC and three SOFC) for steady state operation with methane revealed that because of external reforming PEFC and PAFC systems are limited to about 67% and 70%, respectively, for the fuel utilisation. High temperature fuel cells can achieve at least 80% because of the possibility of internal reforming, or even over 90% in case of anode off-gas recycling. In combination with a cell voltage which is about 100 mV lower than that of MCFC and planar SOFC, PEFC can only achieve 38% of electrical net efficiency, PAFC 42% and tubular SOFC 54%. The latter is similar to MCFC, which is operated at higher cell voltage but lower fuel utilisation. The highest efficiency with up to 63% can be achieved with planar SOFC systems, because this concept allows high fuel utilisation together with high cell voltages.  相似文献

We investigate the utilization of anode exhaust gas from high temperature fuel cells as gasification or reforming agent in Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) and Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell (MCFC) power plants. The minimal anodic recirculation ratio is determined by two approaches: based on stoichiometric considerations and using detailed modeling of all process units. In the latter case, the risk of carbon formation and system heat integration are considered. The results indicate that the stoichiometric approach can be used as a shortcut method only for the SOFC systems due to good agreements with the detailed calculations. Furthermore, the mass integration concept is a feasible option for a wide variety of fuels in SOFC plants thanks to their relatively high operating temperatures. In MCFC systems, significantly higher recycle ratios are required to suppress carbon deposition which makes this concept unattractive.  相似文献

In this study, the balance of plant (BOP) of an ethanol-fueled SOFC is analyzed using the GCTool software package developed by Argonne National Laboratory (ANL). The effects of the excess air ratio and fuel utilization on the electric and heat efficiencies of the SOFC are systematically examined for two reforming methods (steam reforming and auto-thermal reforming) and two flow sheets (BOP A and BOP B). In BOP A, the cathode off-gas is passed directly to the afterburner together with the unreacted fuel, and the hot flue gas exiting the burner is then used to provide the thermal energy required for the ethanol reforming process. In BOP B, the cathode off-gas is passed through a heat exchanger in order to heat the ethanol fuel prior to the reforming process, and is then flowed into the burner with the unreacted fuel. The results show that given an SOFC inlet temperature of 650 °C, a fuel utilization of 70.2% and excess air ratios of 4, 6 and 7, respectively, the overall system efficiency is equal to 74.9%, 72.3% and 71.0%. In general, the results presented in this study provide a useful starting point for the design and development of practical ethanol-fueled SOFC test systems.  相似文献

In order to improve the power generation efficiency of fuel cell systems employing liquid fuels, a hybrid system consisting of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) and proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is proposed. Utilize the high temperature heat generated by SOFC to reform as much methanol as possible to improve the overall energy efficiency of the system. When SOFC has a stable output of 100 kW, the amount of hydrogen after reforming is changed by changing the methanol flow rate. Three hybrid systems are proposed to compare and select the best system process suitable for different situations. The results show that the combined combustion system has the highest power generation, which can reach 350 kW and the total electrical efficiency is 57%. When the power of the tail gas preheating system is 160 kW, the electrical efficiency can reach 75%. The PEM water preheating system has the most balanced performance, with the electric power of 300 kW and the efficiency of 66%.  相似文献

A pressurized solid oxide fuel cell–gas turbine hybrid system (SOFC–GT system) has been received much attention for a distributed power generation due to its high efficiency. When considering an energy management of the system, it is found that a heat input is highly required to preheat air before being fed to the SOFC stack. The recirculation of a high-temperature cathode exhaust gas is probably an interesting option to reduce the requirement of an external heat for the SOFC–GT system. This study aims to analyze the pressurized SOFC–GT hybrid system fed by ethanol with the recycle of a cathode exhaust gas via a simulation study. Effect of important operating parameters on the electrical efficiency and heat management of the system is investigated. The results indicate that an increase in the operating pressure dramatically improves the system electrical efficiency. The suitable pressure is in a range of 4–6 bar, achieving the highest system electrical efficiency and the lowest recuperation energy from the waste heat of the GT exhaust gas. In addition, it is found that the waste heat obtained from the GT is higher than the heat required for the system, leading to a possibility of the SOFC–GT system to be operated at a self-sustainable condition. Under a high pressure operation, the SOFC–GT system requires a high recirculation of the cathode exhaust gas to maintain the system without supplying the external heat; however, the increased recirculation ratio of the cathode exhaust gas reduces the system electrical efficiency.  相似文献

A suitable operational strategy for a power interchange operation using multiple residential solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) cogeneration systems for saving energy is investigated by an optimization approach based on mixed-integer linear programming. In this power interchange operation, electricity generated by residential SOFC cogeneration systems is shared among households in a housing complex without allowing a reverse power flow to a commercial electric power system in order to increase electric load factors of the system. For an SOFC cogeneration system operated continuously with the minimum output, two types of operational strategies for the power interchange operation are adopted: an operation to meet the total demand for electricity in intended households by the electricity output of SOFC cogeneration systems and an operation to meet the demand for hot water in each household by the hot water output of the SOFC cogeneration system. To clarify a theoretical limit of the energy-saving effects of the two strategies, this study numerically analyzes optimal operation patterns for 20 households on three representative days. The results show that the former operational strategy, which takes advantage of the high electricity generating efficiency of the SOFC, is more suitable for saving energy as compared to the latter strategy.  相似文献

High-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cell (HT-PEMFC), which operates between 160 °C and 200 °C, is considered to be a promising technology, especially for cogeneration applications. In this study, a mathematical model of a natural gas fed integrated energy system based on HT-PEMFC is first developed using the principles of electrochemistry and thermodynamics (including energy and exergy analyses). The effects of some key operating parameters (e.g., steam-to-carbon ratio, HT-PEMFC operating temperature, and anode stoichiometric ratio) on the system performance (electrical, cogeneration, and exergetic efficiencies) are examined. The exergy destruction rates of each component in the integrated system are found for different values of these parameters. The results show that the most influential parameter which affects the performance of the integrated system is the anode stoichiometric ratio. For the baseline conditions, when the anode stoichiometric ratio increases from 1.2 to 2, the electrical, cogeneration, and exergetic efficiencies decrease by 42.04%, 33.15%, and 37.39%, respectively. The highest electrical power output of the system is obtained when the SCR, operating temperature, and anode stoichiometric ratio are taken as 2, 160 °C, and 1.2, respectively. For this case, the electrical, cogeneration, and exergetic efficiencies are found as 26.20%, 70.34%, and 26.74%, respectively.  相似文献

We evaluate two kinds of solid-oxide-fuel-cell (SOFC)–polymer-electrolyte-fuel-cell (PEFC) combined systems by numerical simulation to investigate the effect of the fuel feeding method. In one, fuel for the system is reformed by using exhaust heat from the SOFC and is separately supplied to the SOFC and PEFC (parallel SOFC–PEFC system). In the other, fuel is fed to the SOFC first and then SOFC exhaust fuel is fed to the PEFC (series SOFC–PEFC system). The quality of the fuel gas in the SOFC is better in the latter system, whereas the quality of the fuel gas in the PEFC is better in the former. We demonstrate that larger PEFC output can be obtained in the parallel SOFC–PEFC system, since more steam, which is included in the SOFC anode exhaust gas, can be used for the reforming of the fuel for the PEFC. We show that the series SOFC–PEFC system provides higher electrical efficiency because the fuel gas quality has a stronger influence on the electromotive force in the SOFC than in the PEFC.  相似文献

An integrated power generation system combining solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) and oxy-fuel combustion technology is proposed. The system is revised from a pressurized SOFC-gas turbine hybrid system to capture CO2 almost completely while maintaining high efficiency. The system consists of SOFC, gas turbine, oxy-combustion bottoming cycle, and CO2 capture and compression process. An ion transport membrane (ITM) is used to separate oxygen from the cathode exit air. The fuel cell operates at an elevated pressure to facilitate the use of the ITM, which requires high pressure and temperature. The remaining fuel at the SOFC anode exit is completely burned with oxygen at the oxy-combustor. Almost all of the CO2 generated during the reforming process of the SOFC and at the oxy-fuel combustor is extracted from the condenser of the oxy-combustion cycle. The oxygen-depleted high pressure air from the SOFC cathode expands at the gas turbine. Therefore, the expander of the oxy-combustion cycle and the gas turbine provides additional power output. The two major design variables (steam expander inlet temperature and condenser pressure) of the oxy-fuel combustion system are determined through parametric analysis. There exists an optimal condenser pressure (below atmospheric pressure) in terms of global energy efficiency considering both the system power output and CO2 compression power consumption. It was shown that the integrated system can be designed to have almost equivalent system efficiency as the simple SOFC-gas turbine hybrid system. With the voltage of 0.752 V at the SOFC operating at 900 °C and 8 bar, system efficiency over 69.2% is predicted. Efficiency penalty due to the CO2 capture and compression up to 150 bar is around 6.1%.  相似文献

Ultra-low sulphur diesel (ULSD) is the preferred fuel for mobile auxiliary power units (APU). The commercial available technologies in the kW-range are combustion engine based gensets, achieving system efficiencies about 20%. Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) promise improvements with respect to efficiency and emission, particularly for the low power range. Fuel processing methods i.e., catalytic partial oxidation, autothermal reforming and steam reforming have been demonstrated to operate on diesel with various sulphur contents. The choice of fuel processing method strongly affects the SOFC's system efficiency and power density.This paper investigates the impact of fuel processing methods on the economical potential in SOFC APUs, taking variable and capital cost into account. Autonomous concepts without any external water supply are compared with anode recycle configurations. The cost of electricity is very sensitive on the choice of the O/C ratio and the temperature conditions of the fuel processor. A sensitivity analysis is applied to identify the most cost effective concept for different economic boundary conditions.The favourite concepts are discussed with respect to technical challenges and requirements operating in the presence of sulphur.  相似文献

Two, simple, solid-oxide fuel-cell (SOFC) power systems fed by hydrogen and methane, respectively, are examined. While other models available in the literatures focus on complicated hybrid SOFC and gas-turbine (GT) power systems, this study focuses on simple SOFC power systems with detailed thermodynamic modeling of the SOFC. All performance-related parameters of the fuel-cell such as respective resistivity of the components, anode and cathode exchange current density, limiting current density, flow diffusivity, etc. are all expressed as a function of temperature, while the flow through of each nodes of the system is described as a function of thermodynamic state. Full analysis of the energy and exergy at each node of the system is conducted and their respective values are normalized by the lower heating value (LHV) of the fuel and its chemical exergy, respectively. Thus, the normalized electrical energy outputs directly indicate the first law and second law efficiencies, respectively, of the fuel-cell power systems.  相似文献

Natural gas is a cheap and abundant fuel for solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), generally integrating the SOFC system with methane pre-treating system for improving the stability of SOFC. In this paper, the accurate effects of methane processing strategy on fuel composition, electrical efficiency and thermal efficiency of SOFC are investigated based on the thermodynamic equilibrium. Steam reforming of methane is an endothermic process and can produce 3 mol of H2 and 1 mol of CO from 1 mol of methane, and thus the electrical efficiency of SOFC is high at the same O/C ratio and equivalent fuel utilization, whereas the thermal efficiency is low. On the contrary, partial oxidation of methane is an exothermal process and only produces 2 mol of H2 and 1 mol of CO from 1 mol of methane, and thus the electrical efficiency of SOFC is low at the same O/C ratio and equivalent fuel utilization, whereas the thermal efficiency is high. When the O/C ratio is 1.5, the electrical efficiency of SOFC is 55.3% for steam reforming of methane, while 32.7% for partial oxidation of methane. High electrical efficiency of SOFC can be achieved and carbon deposition can be depressed by selecting suitable O/C ratio from methane pretreatment according to the accurate calculation and analysis of effects of different methane processing strategies on the electrical efficiency and thermal efficiency of SOFC.  相似文献

The aim of this research work is to describe in qualitative and quantitative form the performance of a micro Combined Heat and Power system for residential application based on Solid Oxide Fuel Cell fueled by natural gas with two different types of pre-reforming systems, namely Steam Reforming and Partial Oxidation and recirculation of anode and cathode gas.The comparative analysis among the different configurations will lead us to conclude that maximum efficiency is achieved when cathode and anode gas recirculation are used along with steam methane reforming. Further Steam Methane Reforming process produces a higher electrical system efficiency compared to Partial oxidation reforming process.Efficiency is affected when running the system in part load mode mainly due to heat loss, additional natural gas supplied to the burner to satisfy the required heat demand inside the system, and ejector efficiency drop in the recirculation system. Due to high temperature of operation heat loss strongly affects the system efficiency especially at part load operation.  相似文献
