The courtship song of Drosophila is thought to be involved in sexual selection and species recognition. Because of the mating system of flies, however, directly demonstrating that song influences female preference is difficult. The majority of previous studies have used an experimental design that potentially confounds male and female reactions to song. In D. montana, correlational evidence has suggested that males that produce short sound pulses consisting of a high number of sound cycles (i.e. a high carrier frequency) have a higher mating success than other males. In this study, we played synthetic song that varied in pulse length and carrier frequency to individual females in the laboratory, both alone and in the presence of mute males. We scored female preference via an acceptance posture, 'wing spreading', which the females of this species usually display prior to mounting by a male. Females responded to synthetic song in the absence of males. The presence of mute males significantly increased their overall responsiveness, but the relative effectiveness of the songs did not change, eliminating male reaction to song as a possible confounding factor in the results. The interaction between pulse length and carrier frequency determined the discrimination between song types, with females responding most readily to song consisting of short pulses with a high carrier frequency. Thus, direct examination of female preferences supports the previous studies of male mating success, and confirms female song preference as a likely determinant of male mating success. Buff-breasted sandpipers use a variety of mating tactics to acquire mates, including remaining at a single lek for most of the breeding season, attending multiple leks during the season, displaying solitarily or displaying both on leks and solitarily. We found that differences in body size, body condition, fluctuating asymmetry scores, wing coloration, territory location and behaviour (attraction, solicitation and agonistic) did not explain the observed variation in mating tactics used by males. Which males abandoned versus returned to leks was also not related to morphology or behaviour, and there was no tendency for males to join leks that were larger or smaller than the lek they abandoned. These results suggest that male desertion of leks was not dependent on a male's characteristics nor on the size of the lek he was presently attending. Males did join leks with larger males than their previous lek, perhaps to mate with females attracted to these larger 'hotshot' males. Males at both leks and solitary sites successfully mated. Lek tenure did not affect mating success, although lekking males appeared to mate more frequently than solitary males. Courtship disruption and to a lesser extent, female mimicry, were effective at preventing females from mating at leks, and may offer a partial explanation for female mating off leks. Our analysis that combined all males together within a year (regardless of mating tactic) indicated that males that attended leks for longer periods of time and that had fewer wing spots were significantly more likely to mate. Given some evidence that wing spotting declines with age, and that females inspect male underwings during courtship, the latter result suggests that female choice may play some role in determining male success. We suggest that male buff-breasted sandpipers may use alternative mating tactics more readily than males in other 'classic' lek-breeding species because: (1) unpredictable breeding conditions in this species' high arctic breeding range leads to low lek stability, which in turn hinders mate selection mechanisms mediated by male dominance and female choice; and (2) males are not constrained by morphological markings that indicate status or sex. The effect of single allele substitutions into an isogenic background in Oregon-R inbred lines of Drosophila melanogaster on courtship and mating patterns has been studied. A comparison has been made between the white locus w, wco, we, the wild type w+, cn, bw, and cn bw to test the effect of eye pigmentation in influencing courtship and mating patterns. It was found that w, we, wco, cn, and bw females were more successful in mating than were wild-type and cn bw females, cn bw females being less successful than wild-type females. Also, w and cn bw males were equally successful in mating but less successful than wild-type males during the 20-min test period. The mutant males performed as well as the wild-type after courtship was initiated. The behavioral parameters measured were (1) courtship latency, the time from exposure of male to female until orientation; (2) mating speed, the time from beginning of orientation of male to female until successful copulation, and (3) copulation time.  相似文献

Male-male courtship behavior was recently reported to be induced in large populations of Drosophila (e.g., 600-1500 flies) by ectopic expression of the white (w) gene. Little is known about the basis of this behavior; in male-female courtship, sensory cues are believed to play an important role. Previous data are consistent with the possibility that misexpression of w causes abnormal reception or processing of sensory information. We show here that w-induced male-male courtship occurs in isolated pairs of flies. Thus the behavior does not depend on sensory cues found only among large populations of flies, or on cues produced only by a small subset of such populations. This finding enabled quantitative analysis of mechanisms that underlie the behavior. Specifically, male-male courtship does not depend on the reception of olfactory information, nor on the reception or generation of auditory cues, as determined by surgical ablation of antennae, maxillary palps, or wings. Although the rapid onset of the behavior following w induction suggested that its basis could lie in a modulation of sensory physiology, we found visual, olfactory, and gustatory function to be normal in physiological or behavioral tests. The only sensory deprivation to produce an effect on male-male courtship was testing under dim red light; the percentage of flies courting another male was reduced to one-fourth of control values. A striking age dependence of the behavior is also documented: courtship between paired male mini-w+ flies was not observed in tests of very young (1-day-old) flies, but occurs at high levels between the ages of 1 and 4 weeks.  相似文献

Examined the social dynamics of the formation of mating balls (gatherings of males) during the mating period of red-sided garter snakes to determine whether the mating balls are formed simply because of a common attraction to the female or whether males are stimulated by the mating balls themselves. Nine test males and 9 stimulus females were used in tests, along with 55 other males, to measure the effect of other courting males. Results show that male Ss courted females more actively when other males were also courting the female than when they were alone with her, suggesting that the female is more attractive to the male when courted by other males. A positive correlation was observed between the number of additional males present and the amount of courtship activity shown by the test male toward the stimulus female. The extent to which the courtship activity of the test males was stimulated by the presence of additional courting males was not influenced by how actively the additional males courted. It has been proposed that females use the symmetry of secondary sexual traits to differentiate between potential mates. The vertical bars on male swordtail fish function as a signal that attracts females and deters rival males in one swordtail species. In addition, male courtship behaviour of most Xiphophorus species incorporates serial lateral presentations, which provide females with a clear opportunity to assess males for bilateral symmetry. We tested the hypothesis that X. cortezi females prefer males with a symmetrical bar number by determining whether females switched their preference between two males when we switched which male had a symmetrical number of bars. The ability to manipulate the bars without influencing other male traits allowed us to control for male characters correlated with bar symmetry that females might prefer. The degree of asymmetry in bar number we used was within the degree of asymmetry found for this trait in nature. Females switched their preference between a pair of males when we switched which male was symmetrical for bar number. I examined interspecific patterns of female choice for three species of mollies: the 'sailfin' species, P. latipinna and two 'shortfin' species, P. orri and P. mexicana. Females of the sailfin species consistently preferred conspecific males across all male treatment combinations containing conspecifics. Females of the two shortfin species had lower levels of female preference and spent less time interacting with males during trials. The only consistent pattern of female choice in either shortfin species was a preference for the sailfin P. latipinna males over heterospecific shortfin males, but not over conspecifics. This finding suggests a potential bias by shortfin females for the sailfin male phenotype. Males of the three species differed in both behaviour and morphology. Length and relative position of the dorsal fin reliably separated P. latipinna from the two shortfin species. Body depth and shape distinguished males of the two shortfin species. Dorsal fin height was not a reliable cue for distinguishing sailfin males from males of either shortfin species. Males from different populations of the sailfin species P. latipinna differ in both size-specific behavioural rates and size-specific morphometry, particularly in the overall size-adjusted area of the dorsal fin. Increased rates of courtship displays and increased area of the dorsal fin separate males of P. latipinna from males of the two shortfin species as well. If the same traits used by females of P. latipinna for intraspecific discrimination are also important species-recognition signals, this suggests a potential role for sexual selection in contributing to the divergence of male phenotype during speciation of sailfin mollies. Drosophila melanogaster males show reduced courtship of virgin females and immature males after experience with either mated females or immature males. However, males experienced with mated females do not show a mating disadvantage, despite the expected reduction in courtship (Zawistowski & Richmond, 1985). This report presents experiments and data concerning D. melanogaster courtships and experience mediated courtship reductions in vials and small chambers. Males observed in small chambers displayed significantly higher levels of courtship toward virgin females, mated females, and immature males when compared with subjects observed in vials, with or without food. Males trained in vials with mated females do not subsequently show reduced levels of courtship in either small chambers or vials. It is suggested that the high level of courtship observed in the small chambers is not required to stimulate a female to mate because males mate more successfully in the vials, even though they court less. The theoretical possibility of coevolution of a viability-reducing female physical trait and a male mating preference for that trait by Fisherian sexual selection in monogamous and polygynous populations is demonstrated using two-locus haploid models. It is assumed that there is dichotomous variation in male resources, resource-rich males have a wider choice among females than resource-poor males, and a female has greater reproductive success when mated with a resource-rich male than a resource-poor one. Under these assumptions, we find that sexual selection operates effectively when female reproductive success is strongly dependent on male resource, the proportion of females that mate with resource-rich males is neither small nor large, the degree of polygyny is low, and resources are inherited from father to son. We suggest that some human female physical traits may have evolved by sexual selection through male choice. The evolution of skin color by sexual selection is discussed as an example.  相似文献

The mating system of the seaweed fly involves a premating struggle. When mounted, females violently try to remove the male. In this study 48% of premating struggles resulted in successful rejection of the male, 46% in copulation and 6% were terminated by the male. Large males had a mating advantage. However, contrary to what would be predicted if this sexual selection occurred as a result of active female mate choice, we found a positive association between the duration of premating struggles and male size. A positive association was also found between the duration of premating struggles and male mating success, suggesting that large males may benefit through their superior ability to withstand female rejection. Large females rejected males more easily than small females, suggesting that the premating struggle has not evolved to allow mate assessment by females. We conclude that sexual selection is occurring as a side-effect of the female rejection response, which has probably evolved in order to avoid costs associated with copulation. Young brown-headed cowbirds (Molothrus ater) socially learn the behaviors that facilitate courtship and mating patterns. Data from this study indicate that the context for this social learning may be provided by spatial associations between young and old cowbirds before the breeding season. Data from 2 different cultural generations of birds indicated that young cowbirds were found most often near young and adult models of the same sex and least often near cowbirds of the opposite sex. Furthermore, there was a positive correlation between the number of times young males were found nearest adult males and those young males' subsequent courtship success with females during the breeding season. Young cowbirds may therefore be interacting more with cowbirds of their own sex during the time period when young males are learning their vocalizations and young females may be learning their preferences for male vocalizations. Male tiger salamanders, Ambystoma tigrinum tigrinumare slightly larger in body size and have considerably higher and longer tails than females. To determine how these dimorphic traits affected reproductive performance and success, we conducted breeding trials using 12 males and six females per trial and monitored male-female and male-male interactions. Larger males had an advantage in most aspects of mate competition investigated. Males with higher tails had no advantage in either mate competition or mate choice. Males with longer tails also had no advantage in mate competition but were preferred as mates by females. Larger males interrupted courting males more often than smaller males did. The form of male-male interference was conditional on body size and not on either tail dimension. If the intruder was larger than the courting male, it would shove the female away from the courting male and initiate courtship; if the intruder was smaller, it adopted a female mimicry tactic in which it positioned itself between the courting male and female and performed female behaviours to the courting male while simultaneously courting the female. Our trials indicated that the two components of sexual selection may influence the evolution of different male morphological traits in tiger salamanders. Mate competition may favour increased male body length; mate choice may select for greater male tail length.  相似文献

Activation of courtship behavior in male red-sided garter snakes is independent of androgens. Only exposure to extended periods of low temperature with subsequent warming stimulates courtship in males. The pineal gland is thought to transduce temperature as well as photoperiodic information in reptiles. Therefore, we explored the relationship of the pineal and melatonin to sexual behavior in this species. Pinealectomy of male garter snakes disrupted sexual behavior upon emergence from a 17-week period of low temperature in approximately 60% of treated individuals in each of the 3 years of study. However, 40% of the males were unaffected by the pinealectomy, engaging in vigorous courtship. Administration of exogenous, chronic melatonin did not significantly modulate the effect of pinealectomy. Upon pinealectomy in the autumn (before hibernation), plasma levels of melatonin fell. However, upon emergence from hibernation, melatonin levels in pinealectomized (PINX) and sham-treated (SHAM) animals were equivalent, indicating extrapineal source(s) of melatonin. However, PINX males did not exhibit a diel cycle in melatonin levels upon emergence. Instead, melatonin remained elevated through the subsequent 24-hr period. SHAMs did exhibit a diel cycle. Ten days after emergence, PINX animals either had a disrupted/abnormal melatonin cycle and were non-courters or had a cycle similar to SHAM males and courted. Therefore, a normal diel cycle of melatonin appeared necessary for the proper expression of courtship behavior. These results suggest that the pineal in snakes 1) is part of a complex, multi-oscillator system as it is in birds and lizards and 2) may play a role in maintaining polymorphism in timing of reproductive behavior.  相似文献

Periadolescent male guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) housed continuously with their mother displayed little or no sexual behavior when they were tested with her in a novel environment. However, if males were rehoused without their mother for 24 hr before testing, they frequently directed courtship and sexual behavior toward her. This effect occurred whether the mother was isolated or not during the rehousing period. In addition, rehousing without the mother produced a significant rise in the plasma testosterone levels of the males. It appears that continuous housing with the mother inhibits sexual and courtship behavior directed toward her, as well as gonadal activity, in periadolescent male guinea pigs. Spawning success of males and its correlates were investigated in a natural colony of whitebelly damselfish, A. leucogaster (Pomacentridae), to explore the criteria that females use in choosing mates. The mating success of individual males was variable, with some males acquiring as few as 5000 eggs and others as many as 450 000 eggs during a breeding season. Male spawning success was not correlated with body size, territory size, nest site parameters or parental care behaviour. Egg hatching success was not related to either male size or egg clutch size, and all males were capable of rearing eggs to hatching. The temporal sequence of choices by females indicated non-independent choice by females, such that males chosen by females on the first spawn of the day were also chosen by females that spawned later in the day. Field observations indicated that, in the absence of male courtship, females preferentially visited males that had eggs in their nest site. Males that had recently mated were preferred by females over those males with either late-stage eggs or no eggs in the nest. This female preference did not appear to be related to increased paternal care or egg clutch survival. Given that the mating system is promiscuous and non-resource based, and that there appears to be little difference among males in body size, females may be mating non-independently by mimicking the choice of other females. Studied whether male garter snakes required intact vomeronasal or olfactory systems to detect the pheromone that triggers the chin-pressing behavior of courtship. Male garter snakes with testosterone propionate pellets implanted sc were tested for courtship displays with estradiol-benzoate-treated females. Three groups of 10 males were formed from snakes exhibiting strong courtship responses. Bilateral olfactory nerve cuts were attempted on 1 group, vomeronasal nerve cuts on a 2nd, and control surgeries on a 3rd. All snakes in the olfactory nerve cut and control groups courted after surgery, and 3 snakes in each group copulated. More than half of the snakes in the olfactory nerve cut group had complete nerve cuts. Nine of the 10 snakes in the vomeronasal nerve cut group exhibited no courtship responses after surgery. The 1 snake in this group that courted was the only snake in which intact vomeronasal nerve fascicles were observed. Data indicate that male garter snakes without functional olfactory systems do court and mate normally, but that male garter snakes without functional vomeronasal systems exhibit no courtship responses. Investigated the possible role of the intercollicularis (ICo) region in the androgen-dependent courtship behavior of male ring doves. In Exp I, bilateral lesions in the ICo region reduced nest-cooing but did not specifically alter other courtship behavior of males tested with stimulus females. In Exp II, unilateral implants containing crystalline testosterone propionate (TP) or cholesterol (C) were placed in the ICo region or in other parts of the midbrain of castrated Ss. The TP implants activatad nest-cooing only when placed in the ICo region. Diffusion from the implant was probably not responsible for the elicitation of nest-cooing, since the weights of the peripheral steroid-sensitive tissues of Ss implanted with TP and C did not differ and since many sites near, but not in, the ICo region were ineffective. Data demonstrate the importance of the ICo region in the expression of courtship behavior in the male ring dove. The facilitation of certain vocal courtship behavior by hormonal stimulation is in line with the suggestion that the central gray/ICo/torus semicircularis regions of the vertebrate brain are analogous in their mediation of vocalizations. Sexual selection has been portrayed as acting predominantly on males who compete with each other over copulatory access to females; selection was considered to be driven by females choosing between males at the pre- or postcopulatory level. However, a broader view of sexual selection is now emerging. Examining male discrimination between females and female-female competition has been beneficial in identifying factors influencing the direction and strength of sexual selection. Furthermore, consideration of processes such as sexual coercion or genetic incompatibility, which indirectly influence an individual's set of copulation partners, gamete set or their offspring success, has helped to clarify the ways in which sexual selection may operate. Moreover, there is increasing evidence that not all copulations translate directly to paternity and that paternity does not necessarily translate into successful offspring. Postcopulatory and postfertilization mechanisms that influence not only paternity share but offspring recruitment now require further consideration. The benefits to each sex of copulating with particular partners or with more than one partner remains an area of debate. More carefully designed studies which eliminate alternative possibilities or quantify the relative importance of different selective pressures will also benefit from considering that not all copulations function solely to inseminate or receive sperm. It is also now clear that not all individuals of one sex follow the same strategy. Examining the variation between individuals in reproductive behaviour, fertilization success and offspring success will be important in establishing the selective pressures and mechanisms underlying the operation of sexual selection. The study of experience-mediated reductions in the courtship of Drosophila melanogaster has stimulated wide interest because of its apparent importance for reproduction, interaction with chemical communication, and the ability to study individual subjects. This report replicates control procedures developed to account for nonassociative effects. The data indicate that male D. melanogaster associate the responses to inhibitory and excitatory cues provided by a mated female and that subsequent presentation of a virgin female results in lower than expected levels of courtship. This reduction is not a result of habituation or fatigue. I hypothesized that this associative effect results from counterconditioning.
