A University and Industry collaborative research project was undertaken to evaluate the performance of as friction stir welded (FSW) and friction stir welded-superplastically formed Ti–6Al–4V alloy sheets. The purpose of this particular effort was to evaluate the tensile properties of friction stir welded and superplastically formed friction stir welded Ti–6Al–4V. Welds were produced out of both standard grain and fine grained titanium and tested in the as welded, stress relieved (SR) and superplastically formed (SPF) conditions. The preliminary results of the FSW and post FSW–SPF joint were found to be close to that of as received titanium with respect to strength, but elongations were decreased.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the microstructure, hardness and cyclic deformation behavior of electron beam welded dissimilar joints of Ti–6Al–4V and Ti17 (Ti–5Al–4Mo–4Cr–2Sn–2Zr) titanium alloys. The welding resulted in a significant microstructural change across the joint, with hexagonal close-packed (hcp) martensite α′ and orthorhombic martensite α″ in the fusion zone (FZ), α′ in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) of Ti–6Al–4V side, and coarse β in the HAZ of Ti17 side. A characteristic asymmetrical hardness profile across the dissimilar joint was observed with the highest hardness in the FZ and a lower hardness on the Ti–6Al–4V side than on the Ti17 side, where a soft zone was observed. The dissimilar joint exhibited a lower Young′s modulus and higher cyclic strain hardening exponent than both Ti–6Al–4V and Ti17 base metals (BMs), and had the monotonic and cyclic yield strengths lying in-between those of two BMs with higher values for Ti17 alloy. Both BMs and joint showed essentially symmetrical hysteresis loops and equivalent fatigue life, and exhibited cyclic stabilization at lower strain amplitudes up to 0.6%, while cyclic softening occurred after initial cyclic stabilization at higher strain amplitudes. The initial cyclic stabilization was shortened with increasing strain amplitude. In the Ti–6Al–4V BM fatigued at a high strain amplitude of 1.2%, a short initial cyclic hardening emerged, corresponding to the presence of twinning and its resistance to the dislocation movement. Fatigue failure of the dissimilar joint occurred in the HAZ of Ti17 side where the soft zone was present, with crack initiation from the specimen surface or near-surface defect and crack propagation characterized by typical fatigue striations.  相似文献

Tool wear behaviour on microstructure and mechanical properties of friction stir welded zones of Ti–6Al–4V alloy was evaluated. SEM examination, EDS analysis and X-ray diffraction results indicated that severe wear of the tool is indicated by the presence of WC-Co particles in the stir zone at rotational speed of 630?rev?min?1 and travel speed of 8?mm?min?1. Micro-hardness, tensile tests and fractographical examinations also reflected that these particles make the material more brittle and reduce the mechanical strength by 40%. However at travel speed of 22?mm?min?1, tool wear is less, hardness distribution is more uniform and enhanced ductility and strength is achieved.  相似文献

The α + β titanium alloy, Ti–6Al–4V, was friction stir welded at a constant tool rotation speed of 400 rpm. Defect-free welds were successfully obtained with welding speeds ranging from 25 to 100 mm/min. The base material was mill annealed with an initial microstructure composed of elongated primary α and transformed β. A bimodal microstructure was developed in the stir zone during friction stir welding, while microstructure in the heat affected zone was almost not changed compared with that in the base material. An increase in welding speed increased the size of primary α in the stir zone. The weld exhibited lower hardness than the base material and the lowest hardness was found in the stir zone. Results of transverse tensile test indicated that all the joints had lower strength and elongation than the base material, and all the joints were fractured in the stir zone.  相似文献

The effect of tool rotation speed on microstructure and mechanical properties of friction stir welded joints was investigated for Ti–6Al–4V titanium alloy. Joints were produced by employing rotation speeds ranging from 400 to 600 rpm at a constant welding speed of 75 mm/min. It was found that rotation speed had a significant impact on microstructure and mechanical properties of the joints. A bimodal microstructure or a full lamellar microstructure could be developed in the weld zone depending on the rotation speeds used, while the microstructure in the heat affected zone was almost not influenced by rotation speed. The hardness in the weld zone was lower than that in the base material, and decreased with increasing rotation speed. Results of transverse tensile test indicated that all the joints exhibited lower tensile strength than the base material and the tensile strength of the joints decreased with increasing rotation speed.  相似文献

Linear friction welded Ti–6Al–4V was investigated in fatigue at various stress amplitudes ranging from the high cycle fatigue (HCF) to the low cycle fatigue (LCF) regime. The base material was composed of hot-rolled Ti–6Al–4V plate that presented a strong crystallographic texture. The welds were characterized in terms of microstructure using electron backscatter diffraction and hardness measurements. The microstructural gradients across the weld zone and thermomechanically affected zone of the linear friction welds are discussed in terms of the crystallographic texture, grain shape and hardness levels, relative to the parent material. The location of crack nucleation under fatigue loading was analyzed relative to the local microstructural features and hardness gradients. Though crack nucleation was not observed within the weld or thermomechanically affected zones, its occurrence within the base material in LCF appears to be affected by the welding process. In particular, by performing high resolution digital image correlation during LCF, the crack nucleation site was related to the local accumulation of plastic deformation in the vicinity of the linear friction weld.  相似文献

5A02 aluminum alloy and pure copper were joined by friction stir welding (FSW). A defect-free joint was obtained when one of process parameters, i.e. the traverse speed was lowered from 40 mm/min to 20 mm/min. A good mixing of Al and Cu was observed in the weld nugget zone (WNZ). A large amount of fine Cu particles were dispersed in the upper part of the WNZ producing a composite-like structure. In the lower part, nano-scaled intercalations were observed and identified by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). These layered structures were subsequently confirmed as Al4Cu9 (γ), Al2Cu3 (ε), Al2Cu (θ), respectively. Formation of these microstructures caused an inhomogeneous hardness profile. Particularly, a distinct rise in hardness was noticed at the Al/Cu interface. Excellent metallurgical bonding between Al and Cu gave rise to good behaviors in the tensile and bending strength.  相似文献

5 mm-Thick dissimilar AA2024-T3 and AA7075-T6 aluminum alloy sheets were friction stir lap welded in two joint combinations, i.e., (top) 2024/7075 (bottom) and 7075/2024. The influences of process conditions (welding speed and joint combination) on defects (hook and voids) features and mechanical properties of joints were investigated in detail. It was found that the hook deflects largely upwards into the stir zone (SZ) at lower welding speeds (50, 150 mm/min) in both combinations. The process conditions significantly affect the hook geometry which in return affects the lap shear strength. In all 2024/7075 joints, voids appear and the joints fracture from the tip of hook on AS along the SZ/TMAZ (thermomechanically affected zone) interface in lap shear test (tensile fracture mode). In 7075/2024 joints, the hook on RS horizontally extends a large distance into the bottom stir zone at higher welding speeds (225, 300 mm/min). The joints fracture in three modes: shear fracture along the lap interfaces, tensile fracture and the mix fracture of both. In both joint combinations, the lap shear strength generally increases with the increase of welding speed. 7075/2024 Joints show higher failure load than 2024/7075 joints at lower welding speeds while the opposite result appears at higher welding speeds.  相似文献

The effects of the main process variables on the stir zone microstructure in friction stir welds were investigated for Ti–6Al–4V. Welds were produced by employing varying welding speeds under a constant rotation speed or different rotation speeds at a constant welding speed. The stir zone microstructure was examined by optical microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. It was found that the stir zone microstructure was determined by the parameters controlling temperature and deformation history during the friction stir welding. A bimodal microstructure characterized by primary α and transformed β with lamellar α + β or a full lamellar microstructure composed of basket-weave α + β lamellae could be developed in the stir zone. The microstructural evolution mechanism in the stir zone was discussed.  相似文献

The occurrence of a phase transformation and the effect of intermetallic compounds on the microstructure and tensile strength properties of diffusion-bonded (DB) joints between Ti–6Al–4V and AISI 304L were studied in the temperature range of 875–950 °C with an interval of 25 °C, a bonding time of 60 min and pressures of 4 MPa and 8 MPa. A maximum tensile strength of 242.6 MPa, was observed for diffusion-bonded joints that were processed at a temperature of 900 °C, bonded for 60 min at a pressure of 4 MPa and annealed for 2 h at 750 °C. Optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to examine the grain growth and the fine details of the interface structure. Energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX) and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) revealed the existence of intermetallic compounds and corroborated the phase transformation.  相似文献

Ti–6Al–4V alloy was subjected to friction stir processing at rotation rates of 400, 800 and 1200 rpm using a polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (pcBN) tool and tool wear at different travel distances was investigated. At high rotation rates of 800 and 1200 rpm, the greatest tool wear, including mechanical and chemical wear, occurred at the initial tool plunge point. Detailed microstructural examinations on the tool plunge point at 1200 rpm by transmission electron microscopy indicated that the “onion ring” structure in the stir zone was caused by a variation in the distribution of TiB particles. Two similar but not identical spatial phase sequences around BN particles, BN–TiB2–TiB–α-Ti (N) and BN–TiB2–TiB–transformed β-Ti (N), as well as Ti2N phase were identified. The reaction mechanism between the tool and the Ti matrix was discussed. Moreover, when the tool wear reached a steady-state condition, the effect of tool wear on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the stir zone was evaluated. A fully transformed β with a Widmanstatten structure was observed at all rotation rates and the average size of prior β grains increased with the rotation rate. The tool wear led to an increment in hardness and tensile strength but a loss of ductility of the stir zone.  相似文献

Tailor welded blanks (TWB) in Al alloys are an attractive structural solution for application in the shipbuilding sector, mainly due to reductions in weight and lower production costs. In the present study, the global and local mechanical properties of dissimilar friction stir welded TWB were assessed. The joints were manufactured with dissimilar Al–Mg alloys and thicknesses (6 and 8 mm) of particular interest to the shipbuilding sector (AA5083 and AA5059). A digital image correlation system (DIC) linked to a tensile test system was used to characterise the local strain fields, and true stress–strain curves were generated for several TWB sub-zones. Microhardness and DIC analyses showed that the stir zone of the TWB presented overmatching in relation to the weakest base material, and that the joints displayed excellent overall mechanical performance that was comparable to the AA5059 base material in terms of strength and ductility. The fatigue strength was evaluated by means of tension–tension fatigue tests, and the TWB joints reached the fatigue keen with a stress range of 70 MPa.  相似文献

The obtained microstructures of a Ti–6Al–4V alloy welded by Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) and Friction Stir Welding (FSW) were investigated and evaluated quantitatively. In the GTAW method, the effect of current was examined so that the samples were subjected to various currents between 90 and 120 A. In the FSW process, samples were welded by different rotational speeds (450–850 rpm). Non-destructive tests including Visual and Radiography Tests (VT and RT) were used to identify defect-free samples. The microstructural studies by electron microscopes revealed formation of different phases in the weld area of the samples welded via mentioned methods. The recorded peak temperatures in the weld regions compared favorably with the expectations about the evolved microstructures. A bi-modal microstructure was just obtained in the FSWed sample with a peak temperature below β transus temperature (T < 995 °C). α′ martensite phase, which is an acicular and strengthening phase in this alloy, was only observed in FSWed specimens.  相似文献

Dissimilar welding of Ti–6Al–4V (Ti-6-4) to Ti–4.5A1–3V–2Fe–2Mo (SP-700) alloys was performed using a CO2 laser. The microstructure and notched tensile strength (NTS) of the dissimilar welds were investigated in the as-welded and post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) conditions. Moreover, the results were compared with homogeneous laser welds with the same PWHT. The dilution of SP-700 with the Ti-6-4 alloy caused the formation of fine needle-like α + β structures, resulting in the exhibition of a moderately high fusion zone (FZ) hardness of HV 398. The high FZ hardness (HV 438) for the weld with the PWHT at 482 °C was associated with low NTS or high notch brittleness. The fracture appearance of the notched tensile specimen was related to its inherent microstructure. With increasing the PWHT temperature, the thickness of grain boundary α increased, which promoted an intergranular dimple fracture. By contrast, fine shallow dimples were present in the peak-aged weld, which was induced by the refined α + β microstructures in the basket-weave form.  相似文献

Abstract

The microstructure of the weld was examined by light and electron microscopy (scanning and transmission). The various regions, i.e. thermomechanically affected zone, heat affected zone and unaffected base material, were studied in detail to better understand the microstructural evolution during friction stir welding and its impact on basic mechanical properties. The change in morphology of the strengthening phases reflected the relative temperature profile and the amount of deformation across the welded joint during the stir welding process. The centre of the weld was composed of fine grains and coarse particles identified mainly as MgZn2. In the thermomechanically and heat affected zones, the grain size was not uniform, and the strengthening phases filled the grain interiors, while grain boundaries were surrounded by precipitation free zones. The size of the strengthening phase decreased towards the base material. The hardness profile of the friction stir weld displayed the lowest hardness on the retreating side. Tensile properties of the weld itself were superior to those for material containing weld.  相似文献

Friction stir welding between AA7075-T6 aluminum alloy and 304 L stainless steel sheet metal was performed with the addition of Al−Ni powder between the joining interfaces to increase the joining performance. The welding tool was rotated at 200 min−1 to 800 min−1 with the constant traverse speed of 25 mm/min. The resulting joint interfaces were analyzed using a field emission-scanning electron microscope and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy analysis. The tensile strength was greater for the Al−Ni powder added specimens at the lower tool rotational speeds. The tensile strength of 360 MPa was obtained for the ‘with-powder’ specimen as compared to 220 MPa for the ‘without-powder’ specimen at the 200 min−1 tool speed. Electron microscope images of the stir zone showed a significant mixing of the Al−Ni powder with the base materials, increased contact at the interface, which resulted in increased joining strength at the lower tool rotational speeds. However, based on the images, intermetallic compound that may contribute to the joining strength in the vicinity of the interfacial region was not detected.  相似文献

The effect of Friction Stir Welding on the fatigue behavior of Al–Mg–Sc alloy has been studied. To reveal the influence of the welding parameters, different travel speeds of the welding tool have been used to provide weld seams with varying microstructural features. Crack initiation as well as crack propagation behavior under fatigue loading has been investigated with respect to the local microstructure at the crack initiation sites and along the crack path. Fatigue cracks were mostly initiated around the stir zone and the adjacent thermo-mechanical affected zone independent from hardness distributions in the weld seams. In some specimens, defect-like feature was observed at the crack origins, which shortened the fatigue lives. It has been found that while the effect of the tool travel speed on the fatigue lifetime seems to be little, the varying and complex local microstructure in the weld seam basically affects both the crack initiation sites and the crack propagation paths.  相似文献

This work is devoted to the analysis of fatigue crack propagation resistance of particulate metal-matrix composites butt joints obtained by friction stir welding. Two different aluminum alloy matrices reinforced with alumina particles were examined. Tests were conducted on both parent material and welded joint for comparison. Fatigue crack propagation was carried out both within the weld nugget and in the thermo-mechanically altered zone at the side of the weld. The comparison between parent material and joint showed that the welding process affects fracture toughness and fatigue crack growth rate differently depending on the material. The analysis of crack path roughness helped to understand those differences in the fatigue crack growth rate. Therefore, roughness-induced crack closure arguments have been introduced to discuss data obtained under different testing conditions (parent material/joint, R-ratio, crack location, crack growth regime). Both the classical Elber’s approach and more recent approaches based on partial crack closure concept (adjusted compliance ratio, ACR, and 2/π methods) were considered. The results showed that, using partial crack closure, all of the data collapse within a reasonable scatterband.  相似文献

Aluminum alloy AA6111 and TiAl6V4 dissimilar alloys were successfully welded by high power ultrasonic spot welding. No visible intermetallic reaction layer was detected in as-welded AA6111/TiAl6V4 welds, even when transmission electron microscopy was used. The effects of welding time and natural aging on peak load and fracture energy were investigated. The peak load and fracture energy of welds increased with an increase in welding time and then reached a plateau. The lap shear strength (peak load) can reach the same level as that of similar Al–Al joints. After natural aging, the fracture mode of welds transferred from ductile fracture of the softened aluminum to interfacial failure due to the strength recovery of AA6111.  相似文献

An Al-4.5%Cu-1.5%Mg aluminum alloy with a T4 temper was friction stir welded, and the effect of the abnormal grain growth on the tensile strength of joints was investigated. Abnormal grain growth usually happens during post weld heat treatment. It is found that the tensile strength and elongation of the heat-treated joint will increase significantly if this phenomenon completely happens in stir zone. On the other hand stable grains in the stir zone have no effect on the mechanical properties of heat-treated joint.  相似文献
