A Tyranno ZMI fiber/TiSi2–Si matrix composite was fabricated via melt infiltration (MI) of a Si–16at%Ti alloy at 1375 °C under vacuum. The Si–Ti alloy was used as an infiltrant to conduct MI processing below 1400 °C and inhibit the strength degradation of the amorphous SiC fibers. The alloy matrix formed was dense and comprised primarily of TiSi2–Si eutectic structures. The TiSi2–Si matrix composite melt-infiltrated at 1375 °C showed a pseudo-plastic tensile stress–strain behavior followed by final fracture at ∼290 MPa and ∼0.9% strain. When the MI temperature was increased to 1450 °C, however, substantial reduction in the stiffness and ultimate strength occurred under tensile loading. Microstructural observations revealed that these degradations were attributed to the damages that occurred on the reinforcing fibers and pyrolytic carbon interfaces during the MI process. The present experimental results clearly demonstrated the effectiveness of the low-temperature MI process in strengthening Tyranno ZMI fiber composites and reducing the processing cost.  相似文献

Organic-coated aluminum nano-powders were consolidated by spark plasma sintering technique with low initial pressure of 1 MPa and high holding pressure of 300 MPa at different sintering temperature. The effect of sintering temperature on microstructures and mechanical properties of the compact bulks was investigated. The results indicate that both the density and the strain of the nanocrystalline aluminum increase with an increase in sintering temperature. However, the micro-hardness, compressive strength and tensile stress of the compact bulks increase initially and then decrease with increasing sintering temperature. The nanocrystalline aluminum sintered at 773 K has the highest micro-hardness of 3.06 GPa, the best compressive strength of 665 MPa and the supreme tensile stress of 282 MPa. A rapid grain growth of nanocrystalline aluminum sintered at 823 K leads to a decrease in micro-hardness, compressive strength and tensile stress. After annealing, a remarkable increase in strain and a slight rise in strength were obtained due to the relief of the residual stress in nanocrystalline Al and the formation of composite structure.  相似文献

For the first stage, a metastable β titanium alloy, Ti–3.5Al–5Mo–4V–2Cr–2Sn–2Zr–1Fe reinforced with trace amounts of TiB whiskers and TiC particles was fabricated by vacuum arc melting process and hot forging followed by heat treatment at 780 °C/740 °C, then by aging at 500 °C, 550 °C, 570 °C and 600 °C. For the second stage, the unreinforced titanium alloy was also fabricated by the same process. The microstructural characteristics were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Traces of TiB whiskers and TiC particles (2.2 vol.%) with a volume ratio of 2:3 synthesized in situ exerted a hybrid reinforcing effect on the β titanium alloy. The reinforcements were uniformly distributed in the matrix and the elastic modulus was improved about 25 GPa. Ultimate tensile strength and yield strength achieves about 1625 MPa and 1500MPa respectively, with ductility at 7% when the aging temperature is 500 °C. The ductility of (TiB + TiC)/(Ti–3.5Al–5Mo–4 V–2Cr–2Sn–2Zr–1Fe) matrix composite could be enhanced by increasing the aging temperatures. After 780 °C followed by aging at 570 °C, excellent strength and plasticity properties were obtained (ultimate tensile strength of matrix alloy is 1350 MPa with elongation of 18% and ultimate tensile strength of composite is 1500 MPa with elongation of 13%).  相似文献

Mechanical behavior of hot rolled Mg–3Sn–1Ca (TX31) magnesium alloy sheets were studied in the temperature range 25–350 °C. The microstructure of the alloy consisted of the eutectic structure of α-Mg + Mg2Sn and a dispersion of needle-like CaMgSn. The highest room-temperature ductility of 18% was obtained by hot rolling of the cast slabs at 440 °C, followed by annealing at 420 °C. The high temperature tensile deformation of the material was characterized by a decrease in work hardening exponent (n) and an increase in strain rate sensitivity index (m). These variations resulted in respective drops of proof stress and tensile strength from 126.5 MPa and 220 MPa at room temperature to 23.5 MPa and 29 MPa at 350 °C. This was in contrast to the ductility of the alloy which increased from 18% at room temperature to 56% at 350 °C. The observed variations in strength and ductility were ascribed to the activity of non-basal slip systems and dynamic recovery at high temperatures. The TX31 alloy showed lower strength than AZ31 magnesium alloy at low temperatures, while it exhibited superior strength at temperatures higher than 200 °C, mainly due to the presence of thermally stable CaMgSn particles.  相似文献

The tensile creep behavior of an oxide–oxide continuous fiber ceramic composite was investigated at 1000 and 1100 °C in laboratory air and in steam. The composite consists of a porous alumina–mullite matrix reinforced with laminated, woven mullite/alumina (Nextel?720) fibers, has no interface between the fiber and matrix, and relies on the porous matrix for flaw tolerance. The tensile stress–strain behavior was investigated and the tensile properties measured. Tensile creep behavior was examined for creep stresses in the 70–140 MPa range. The presence of steam accelerated creep rates and dramatically reduced creep lifetimes. The degrading effects of steam become more pronounced with increasing temperature. At 1000 °C, creep run-out (set to 100 h) was achieved in all tests. At 1100 °C, creep run-out was achieved in all tests in air and only in the 87.5 MPa test in steam. Composite microstructure, as well as damage and failure mechanisms were investigated.  相似文献

The aim of this research is to manufacture intermingled hybrid composites using aligned discontinuous fibres to achieve pseudo-ductility. Hybrid composites, made with different types of fibres that provide a balanced suite of modulus, strength and ductility, allow avoiding catastrophic failure that is a key limitation of composites. Two different material combinations of high strength carbon/E-glass and high modulus carbon/E-glass were selected. Several highly aligned and well dispersed short fibre hybrid composites with different carbon/glass ratios were manufactured and tested in tension in order to investigate the carbon ratio effect on the stress–strain curve. Good pseudo-ductile responses were obtained from the high modulus carbon/E-glass composites due to the fragmentation of the carbon fibres. The experimental results were also compared with an analytical solution. The intermingled hybrid composite with 0.25 relative carbon ratio gave the maximum pseudo-ductile strain, 1.1%, with a 110 GPa tensile modulus. Moreover, the initial modulus of the intermingled hybrids with 0.4 relative carbon ratio is 134 GPa, 3.5 times higher than that of E-glass/epoxy composites. The stress–strain curve shows a clear “yield point” at 441 MPa and a well dispersed and gradual damage process.  相似文献

Tension–compression fatigue behavior of a non-oxide ceramic composite with a multilayered matrix was investigated at 1200 °C in laboratory air and in steam. The composite was produced via chemical vapor infiltration (CVI). The composite had an oxidation inhibited matrix, which consisted of alternating layers of silicon carbide and boron carbide and was reinforced with laminated woven Hi-Nicalon™ fibers. Fiber preforms had pyrolytic carbon fiber coating with boron carbide overlay applied. Tension–compression fatigue behavior was studied for fatigue stresses ranging from 80 to 200 MPa at a frequency of 1.0 Hz. Presence of steam significantly degraded the fatigue performance. Specimens that achieved fatigue run-out were subjected to tensile tests to failure to characterize the retained tensile properties. The material retained 100% of its tensile strength. Composite microstructure, as well as damage and failure mechanisms were investigated.  相似文献

A conductive silicone rubber (SR) composite, filled with both carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and carbon black (CB) is prepared by a simple ball milling method. Because of the good dispersion and synergistic effects of CNT and CB, the SR composite (SR with 2.5 phr CB and 1.0 phr CNT hybrid fillers) shows improvement in mechanical properties such as tensile strength and strain to failure. As well, due to the assembly of conductive pathways generated by the CNT and CB, the nanocomposite becomes highly conductive at a comparatively low concentration, with high sensitivity for tensile and compressive stress. Long-term measurement of properties shows that the SR composite maintains the excellent electrical properties under different strain histories. These outstanding properties show that the SR composite has potential applications in tensile and pressure sensors.  相似文献

A novel (TiB + La2O3)/Ti-alloy composite was In situ synthesized through homogeneously melting in a non-consumable vacuum arc remelting furnace. Ti–35Nb–2Ta–3Zr β titanium alloy was chosen as the matrix Ti-alloy and different mass fractions of LaB6 were chosen as additions. Microstructure observations were examined by optical microscope (OM), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The phase analysis was identified by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Largest ultimate tensile strength around 580 MPa and highest elongation around 30% is obtained in 0.1% LaB6-additioned specimen. The appearance of too many La2O3 particles and the reduction of oxygen in the matrix alloy also attribute much to the strength and plasticity of (TiB + La2O3)/Ti composites. Lower ultimate tensile strength around 526 MPa is obtained in 0.5% LaB6-additioned specimen.  相似文献

A conceptual approach was used to design a new Ni-free austenitic stainless steel with a unique combination of ultrahigh strength and ductility. The concept was based on the alloying of the 0.05C–18Cr–12Mn (wt.%) steel by 0.39%N and heavy warm rolling (84% reduction) at 1173 K (900 °C) to achieve the yield strength of minimum 1 GPa and high tensile strength and elongation due to a proper stability of the austenite as a result of the optimized stacking fault energy (SFE). The yield strength of 1010 MPa, tensile strength of 1150 MPa and high fracture strain of 70% were measured for the steel designed. Dislocation and solid solution hardening mechanisms are introduced as the main contributors for the ultrahigh yield strength of the steel. The strain hardening is gradual and the hardening rate reaches a high level of ∼2400 MPa at a high true strain of 40% due to slow α′-martensitic transformation and mechanical twinning. Consequently, the ductility of the designed steel is excellent.  相似文献

The incorporation of graphite particles into AA6016 aluminum alloy matrix to fabricate metal/ceramic composites is still a great challenge and various parameters should be considered. In this study, dense AA6016 aluminum alloy/(0-20 wt%) graphite composites have successfully been fabricated by powder metallurgy process. At first, the mixed aluminum and graphite powders were cold compacted at 200 MPa and then sintered at 500 ℃ for 1 h followed by hot extrusion at 450 ℃. The influence of ceramic phases(free graphite and in-situ formed carbides) on microstructure, physical and mechanical properties of the produced composites were finally investigated. The results show that the fabricated composites have a relative density of over 98%. SEM observations indicate that the graphite has a good dispersion in the alloy matrix even at high graphite content. Hardness of all the produced composites was higher than that of aluminum alloy matrix. No cracks were observed at strain less than 23% for all hot extruded materials.Compressive strength, reduction in height, ultimate tensile stress, fracture stress, yield stress, and fracture strain of all Al/graphite composites were determined by high precision second order equations. Both compressive and ultimate tensile strengths have been correlated to microstructure constituents with focusing on the in-situ formed ceramic phases, silicon carbide(SiC) and aluminum carbide(Al_4 C_3). The ductile fracture mode of the produced composites became less dominant with increasing free graphite content and in-situ formed carbides. Wear resistance of Al/graphite composites was increased with increasing graphite content. Aluminum/20 wt% graphite composite exhibited superior wear resistance over that of AA6016 aluminum alloy.  相似文献

The present study shows the effect of adding CNT to linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) to produce LLDPE/CNT nanocomposite fibers. The LLDPE/CNT fibers were produced by melt extrusion process using a twin-screw extruder, in a controlled temperature from 160 °C to 275 °C. Further, melt extrusion process was followed by drawing of fibers at the room temperature. Three different weight percentages, 0.08, 0.3 and 1 wt.% of CNT were studied for producing nanocomposite fibers. The addition of 1 wt.% CNT in the LLDPE fiber has increased the tensile strength by 38% (350 MPa). The addition of 0.08 and 0.3 wt.% CNT in the fiber matrix has improved the ductility by 87% and 122%, respectively. Similarly, improvement in the toughness was observed by 63% and 105% for LLDPE fibers with 0.08 wt.% and 0.3 wt.% CNT respectively. The increase in the mechanical properties of the composite fibers was attributed to the alignment and distribution of CNT in the LLDPE matrix. The dispersion of CNT in the polymeric matrix has been revealed by SEM. The study shows that the small addition of CNT when properly mixed and aligned will increase the mechanical properties of pristine polymer fibers.  相似文献

Modification of spraying fused (MSF) of plasma arc as heat source was used to improve the fatigue performance of welded joint, which both fundamentally reduced stress concentration at weld toe and achieved metallurgical bond between spraying fused coating and welding. The low transformation temperature alloy powder was applied to the method of MSF. After spraying fusion, especially spraying fused joint by low transformation temperature alloy powder, the distribution of residual stress is more difficult to be obtained. Finite element (FE) simulation as an important tool was used to determine the stress field and temperature field of spraying fused joint. Simulated results show that as-welded joint and welded joint spraying fused by conventional nickel base alloy powder (Conventional-joint) present tensile stress. The stress of welded joint spraying fused by low transformation temperature alloy powder (LTT-joint) is compressive stress. Fatigue test results indicated that under the condition of 2 × 106 cycles, the fatigue strength of as-welded joint is 135 MPa, while that of Conventional-joint and LTT-joint is 218 MPa and 235 MPa, respectively. The fatigue strength of Conventional-joint increases by 61.48%, and fatigue strength of LTT-joint increases by 74.07%.  相似文献

Carbon foams and fibers reinforced carbon composites were prepared using chemical liquid-vaporized infiltration and pitch impregnation. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the composites were investigated. The results showed that the final density of these samples was in a range of 1.34–1.45 g/cm3. The pores in carbon foams were filled with pyrocarbon and pitch carbon. The flexural and tensile strength of the composites increased gradually with increasing the content of carbon fibers, whereas the compressive stress went up to a maximum value of 35.9 MPa at the fiber content of 7%.  相似文献

The effect of deformation strain at room temperature on the microstructural and mechanical properties of Zircaloy-2 was investigated in the present work. The sample was initially heat treated at 800 °C in argon environment and quenched in mercury prior to rolling. The deformed alloys were characterized by using EBSD and TEM. It reveals the misorientation of incidental grain boundaries (IDBs) due to large plastic strain induced in the sample. The recovery of deformed alloy upon annealing leads to the formation of ultrafine and nanostructured grains in the alloy. The hardness achieved after 85% room temperature rolling (RTR) is found to be 269 HV, while the tensile strength is 679 MPa and 697 MPa in the rolling and transverse direction, respectively. The improvement in strength is due to generation of high dislocation density and ultrafine grains in the deformed alloy with 85% thickness reduction, during rolling. The deformed alloy subjected to annealing at 400 °C for 30 min sample shows increase in ductility (6% and 7.2%) in rolling and transverse direction, respectively, due to the annihilation of dislocations as evident from the TEM study.  相似文献

A novel interpenetrating C/Mg-Zn-Mn composite was fabricated by infiltrating Mg-Zn-Mn alloy into porous carbon using suction casting technique. The microstructure, mechanical properties and corrosion behaviors of the composite have been evaluated by means of SEM, XRD, mechanical testing and immersion test. It was shown that the composite had a compact structure and the interfacial bonding between Mg-Zn-Mn alloy and carbon scaffold was very well. The composite had an ultimate compressive strength of (195 ± 15) MPa, which is near with the natural bone (2–180 MPa) and about 150-fold higher than that of the original porous carbon scaffold, and it still retained half of the strength of the bulk Mg-Zn-Mn alloy. The corrosion test indicated that the mass loss percentage of the composite was 52.9% after 30 days′ immersion in simulated body fluid (SBF) at 37 ± 0.5 °C, and the corrosion rates were 0.043 mg/cm2h and 0.028 mg/cm2h after 3 and 7 days′ immersion, respectively. The corrosion products on the composite surface were mainly Mg(OH)2 and hydroxyapatite (HA).  相似文献

The mechanical properties and microstructural evolution of Al 6061 alloy subjected to cryorolling and warm rolling have been investigated in the present work. The Al 6061 alloy was subjected to thickness reduction of 70% by cryorolling followed by thickness reduction of 20% by warm rolling. The cryorolled + warmrolled (CR + WR) samples were characterized by Electron back scattered diffraction (EBSD) technique, Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-Ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) technique to substantiate the role of deformation strain and temperature on their microstructural features and compared with cryorolled (CR) samples. The CR + WR samples showed a significant improvement in tensile strength (376 MPa) and partial improvement in ductility (5%) as measured from tensile testing. It is mainly due to the combined effect of partial grain refinement, solid solution strengthening, dislocation hardening, dynamic recovery, and dynamic ageing during cryorolling and warm rolling. The effect of ageing on CR + WR samples was investigated and the optimum ageing condition was found to be 45 h at 125 °C, which gives improved tensile strength of (406 MPa) and good tensile ductility (10%). The tensile strength of cryorolled + warm rolled + peak aged (CR + WR + PA) sample (406 MPa) was found to be 11.2% more than that of cryorolled + peak aged (CR + PA) sample (365 MPa). During peak ageing treatment, the strength has been retained by pinning of dislocations through nanosized precipitates generated during warm rolling and it has been improved further by precipitation of the remnant dissolved second phase in the matrix. However, the observed ductility of CR + PA sample was 13% more than CR + WR + PA sample due to low dislocation density after ageing.  相似文献

Microstructure and mechanical properties of a new β high strength Ti–3.5Al–5Mo–6V–3Cr–2Sn–0.5Fe titanium alloy were investigated in this paper. Both the α/β and β solution treatment and subsequent aging at temperatures ranging from 440 °C to 560 °C for 8 h were introduced to investigate the relationship between microstructures and properties. Microstructure observation of α/β solution treatment plus aging condition shows that the grain size is only few microns due to the pinning effect of primary α phase. The β solution treatment leads to coarser β grain size and the least stable matrix. The size and volume fraction of secondary α are very sensitive to temperature and strongly affected the strength of the alloy. When solution treated at 775 °C plus aged at 440 °C, the smallest size (0.028 μm in width) of secondary α and greatest volume fraction (61%) of α resulted in the highest yield strength (1624 MPa). And the yield strength decreased by an average of 103 MPa with every increase of 40 °C due to the increase of volume fraction and decrease of the size of secondary α. In β solution treatment plus aging condition, tensile results shows that the strength if the alloy dramatically decreased by an average of 143 MPa for every increase of 40 °C because of larger size of secondary α phase than α/β solution treated plus aged condition.  相似文献

The present work aims at characterizing a metal matrix syntactic foam core sandwich composite under three-point bending conditions. The sandwich comprises alumina hollow particle reinforced A356 alloy syntactic foam with carbon fabric skins. Crack initiation in the tensile side of the specimen causing failure of the skin, followed by rapid failure of the core in the direction applied load, is observed as the failure mechanism. Crack propagation through the alumina particles is observed in the failed specimens instead of interfacial failure. The average maximum strength, flexural strain and stiffness were measured as 91.2 ± 5.6 MPa, 0.49 ± 0.06% and 20.6 ± 0.7 GPa respectively. The collapse load is theoretically predicted using mechanics of sandwich beams. Experimental values show good agreement with theoretical predictions.  相似文献

The tensile and fatigue behavior of superelastic shape memory alloy (SMA) bars heat-treated at three different temperatures were examined. Low cycle fatigue tests at variable load rates were carried out to determine the effect of stress and frequency on residual strain and energy dissipation in a fatigue cycle. The mechanism of energy dissipation was studied by monitoring the temperature changes in the fatigued samples as a function of applied stress and frequency of testing. Results from the tensile tests revealed that the stress for the Austenite to Martensite transformation decreased from 408 MPa to 204 MPa with an increase in temperature of heat treatment from 300 to 450 °C. The ultimate strength of the SMA increased from 952 MPa to 1115 MPa when the heat treatment temperature was increased from 300 to 450 °C. Fatigue testing prior to conducting the tensile test decreased the ultimate strength of the SMA and also reduced the failure strain. The energy dissipation in fatigue tests was found to decrease as test frequency increased from 0.025 Hz to 0.25 Hz and the change in sample temperature during the test at the lower test frequency was found to be considerably higher than at the higher frequency.  相似文献
