This paper presents the results of experimental investigation on fatigue behaviors of friction stir welded joints in AA7075-T6 with ultrasonic fatigue test system (20 kHz). Two kinds of particles, Fe-rich intermetallic compounds and Mg2Si-based particles, governed the fatigue crack initiation. The plastic deformation and recrystallization during welding process led to the changes in particle size and micro crack occurrence between thermo-mechanically affected zone (TMAZ) and nugget zone (NZ). Therefore, the fatigue crack initiation sites leaned to be located at the TMAZ in short fatigue life, or at the NZ in very high cycle fatigue regime.  相似文献

The microstructure of nano-SiC enhancing friction stir spot welding (FSSW) joint with dwell time of 3?s was characterised by an onion ring structure which consisted of alternate SiC-free zones and SiC-rich zones where SiC particles refined the grains. However, onion ring structure disappeared and SiC particles dispersed homogeneously when dwell time was 5?s. The microhardness of stir zone (SZ) and tensile shear load of SiC enhancing FSSW joint were higher than those of conventional FSSW joints. After heat treatment at 200°C for an hour, grains of the SZ grew substantially and coursed reduction in mechanical properties of joints, while grain size of SZ and tensile shear load of SiC enhancing joint was invariant but the microhardness of SZ increased.  相似文献

The present paper aims to investigate the effect of ultrasonic peening treatment on the very high cycle fatigue resistance of an AA7075 friction stir welded joint. Microscopy observation, microhardness and X‐ray diffraction measurements were carried out to characterize the treated surface of peened specimens. Fatigue crack initiation sites were investigated through scanning electron microscope, and the role of enhanced surface on fatigue resistance was analyzed. The results indicate that a sensible fatigue strength improvement can be obtained through application of ultrasonic peening treatment and that fatigue cracks can initiate from the interior of the specimen. To clarify the fatigue failure mechanism, we analyzed the microstructure characteristics, compressive residual stress profile and intermetallic inclusion distribution in the surface layers, and we discussed the capability of ultrasonic peening treatment to hinder the surface crack initiation.  相似文献

The effects of surface treatment techniques like laser and shot peening on the mechanical properties were investigated for friction stir welded 2195 aluminum alloy joints. The loading in the tensile specimens was applied in a direction perpendicular to the weld direction. The peening effects on the local mechanical properties through the different regions of the weld were characterized using a digital image correlation technique assuming an iso-stress condition. This assumption implies that the stress is uniform over the cross-section and is equal to the average stress. The surface strain and average stress were used giving an average stress–strain curve over the region of interest. The extension of the iso-stress assumption to calculate local stress–strain curves in surface treated regions is a novel approach and will help to understand and improve the local behavior at various regions across the weld resulting in a sound welding process. The surface and through-thickness residual stresses were also assessed using the X-ray diffraction and the contour methods. The laser peened samples displayed approximately 60% increase in the yield strength of the material. In contrast, shot peening exhibited only modest improvement to the tensile properties when compared to the unpeened FSW specimens. The result that laser peening is superior to shot peening because of the depth of penetration is original since this superiority has not been presented before regarding mechanical properties performance.  相似文献

In the present paper, thermo-mechanical fatigue (TMF) and low cycle fatigue (LCF) or isothermal fatigue (IF) lifetimes of a cast magnesium alloy (the AZ91 alloy) were studied. In addition to a heat treatment process (T6), several rare elements were added to the alloy to improve the material strength in the first step. Then, the cyclic behavior of the AZ91 was investigated. For this objective, strain-controlled tension–compression fatigue tests were carried out. The temperature varied between 50 and 200 °C in the out-of-phase (OP) TMF tests. The constraint factor which was defined as the ratio of the mechanical strain to the thermal strain, was set to 75%, 100% and 125%. For LCF tests, mechanical strain amplitudes of 0.20%, 0.25% and 0.30% were considered at constant temperatures of 25 and 200 °C. Experimental fatigue results showed that the cyclic hardening behavior occurred at the room temperature in the AZ91 alloy. At higher temperatures, this alloy had a brittle fracture. But also, it was not significantly clear that the cyclic hardening or the cyclic softening behavior would be occurred in the material. Then, the high temperature LCF lifetime was more than that at the room temperature. The OP-TMF lifetime was the least value in comparison to that of LCF tests. At the end of this article, two energy-based models were applied to predict the fatigue lifetime of this magnesium alloy.  相似文献

Lightweight alloys are of major concern, due to their functionality and applications in transport and industry applications. Friction stir welding (FSW) is a solid-state welding process for joining aluminum and other metallic alloys and has been employed in aerospace, rail, automotive and marine industries. Compared to the conventional welding techniques, FSW produces joints which do not exhibit defects caused by melting. The objective of the present study is to investigate the surface hardness (H) and elastic modulus (E) in friction stir welded aluminum alloy AA6082-T6. The findings of the present study reveal that the welding process softens the material, since the weld nugget is the region where the most deformations are recorded (dynamic recrystallization, production of an extremely fine, equiaxial structure), confirmed by optical microscopy and reduced nanomechanical properties in the welding zone. A yield-type pop-in occurs upon low loading and represents the start of phase transformation, which is monitored through a gradual slope change of the load-displacement curve. Significant pile-up is recorded during nanoindentation of the alloy through SPM imaging.  相似文献

The paper is focused on the evaluation of the fracture and Fatigue Crack Growth (FCG) properties of butt joints of particulate metal-matrix composite (PMMC) obtained by friction stir welding (FSW). The materials considered are two aluminum alloy matrix/alumina particle PMMCs (AA6061/Al2O3/20p and AA7005/Al2O3/10p). Tests were conducted on unwelded and welded PMMCs using CT and Extended CT (ECT) specimen geometries, respectively. The crack growth rate was monitored by means of compliance with a strain gage attached on the back of the specimen. FCG experiments were carried out both at the centre and in the Thermo-Mechanically Altered Zone (TMAZ) at the side of the weld. The comparison between unwelded and welded PMMCs showed that FSW influences fracture toughness and FCG rate in a different fashion depending on the material. In particular, the FSW AA6061/Al2O3/20p butt joint exhibited comparable fracture toughness and higher FCG threshold with respect to the unwelded material, while in the case of AA7005/Al2O3/10p the behaviour is the opposite. The interpretation of this trend has been carried out by optical analysis of the crack path roughness and its correlation with the FCG rate. The dynamic recrystallization of the aluminum matrix and particle shaping operated by the FSW tool are at the ground of the explanation.  相似文献

Ultrasonic fatigue tests were performed on friction stir welded AA6061 joint to investigate very high cycle fatigue (VHCF) behaviors. As a result, almost all the fatigue cracks are initiated from local plastic slip markings around the boundary between thermo-mechanically affected zone and heat affected zone. The fatigue strength decreases from the top to root of the welded joint, owing to the variation of plastic deformation history and temperature distribution through the thickness. In fractography, the fatigue crack initiation site is surrounded by a semicircular flat zone, of which the formation in VHCF regime accounts for more than 98% of the total fatigue life.  相似文献

Microstructure, microhardness and corrosion susceptibility of friction stir welded joint in an AlMgSiCu alloy were investigated. It was found that the joint exhibits different corrosion susceptibility among the microstructural zones. The base material is the most susceptible to intergranular corrosion because of the presence of continuous cathodic precipitates (Si and Q phases) at grain boundaries and the precipitate free zone along the grain boundaries. The coarsening of intergranular precipitates and the precipitation of Q′ phases in the grain bodies reduce intergranular corrosion susceptibility but introduce pitting corrosion in the heat-affected zone. The significant elimination of intergranular corrosion both in nugget zone and thermo-mechanically affected zone is related to the low volume fraction of intergranular precipitate. Microhardness variations depend on the evolution of intragranular precipitates. The dissolution and/or coarsening of the strengthening precipitates result in the softening within the welded zone.  相似文献

Tensile and fatigue behavior of a 6N01 aluminum alloy friction stir welded (FSW) joint was studied. The tensile and fatigue tests were carried out for the large plate and small round bar specimens. The small round-bar specimens extracted from base material (BM), heat affected zone (HAZ) and stir zone (SZ). The HAZ exhibited the lowest hardness. The higher tensile and fatigue strengths of SZ were mainly due to fine and homogeneous grains and significant cyclic hardening. Fatigue failure of the large plate specimen including the whole FSW joint part occurred at the lowest hardness location in the HAZ.  相似文献

Stress-controlled load increase and constant amplitude tests were performed on the cast magnesium alloy AZ91D. Rather small values of the plastic strain amplitude reflect the very localised plastic deformation predominant in the I-phase. The cyclic deformation and temperature curves of the load increase tests exhibit cyclic yield strength values which allow a good estimation of the endurance limit. Stress amplitudes above the endurance limit lead to cyclic hardening. As compared to the behaviour under monotonic tensile loading, the alloy exhibits cyclic hardening. Microscopic investigations illustrate the different influences of the - and β-phase in respect to crack initiation.  相似文献

We propose a stationary shoulder friction stir process (SSFSP) to produce a smooth surface finish. The use of a stationary shoulder tool contributes to reducing the heat input during friction stir processing (FSP). Hence, a stationary shoulder tool is advantageous for FSP in heat sensitive alloys like magnesium. The present short communication investigates the surface finish of AZ31B magnesium alloy processed by SSFSP without using additional cooling. Surface analysis of the processed region was carried out by 2D and 3D surface mapping using digital microscopy. The surface mapping indicated that there was very little flash generation on the processed zone, while 3D mapping quantified the surface roughness in the longitudinal as well as transverse directions of the processing zone.  相似文献

Friction stir processing (FSP) was applied to cast magnesium alloy AZ91-F to modify the as-cast microstructure, and the effect of FSP on fatigue behaviour was discussed based on microstructural consideration, crack initiation, crack growth behaviour, and fracture surface analysis. Fully reversed axial fatigue tests have been performed using as-cast, T5-aged and their FSPed specimens (as-cast/FSP and T5/FSP). It was found that both FSPed specimens exhibited significantly higher fatigue strength than the as-cast and T5-aged specimens. FSP resulted in the break-up of coarse as-cast microstructure, grain refinement of the matrix, finely dispersed precipitates and increase of hardness, thereby both the crack initiation resistance and the crack growth resistance were considerably enhanced compared with the as-cast and T5-aged specimens, resulting in the improved fatigue strengths of the FSPed specimens.  相似文献

Series of welds were made by friction stir welding (FSW) with various backplates made out of materials ranging from low diffusivity granite to high diffusivity copper in order to reveal the effect of backplate diffusivity on the joint microstructure and properties. The temperature, microstructure, microhardness and tensile properties of joints were compared and discussed. Results show that the backplate with high diffusivity effectively decreases the heat input to the workpiece during FSW. With decreasing the backplate diffusivity the sizes of equiaxed recrystallized grains in the nugget zone increase obviously, while the hardness of the nugget zone also increases a little. The interface between the thermo-mechanically affected zone and nugget zone at the retreating side disappears under the granite backplate. Moreover, the ductility of the joint is more excellent under the copper backplate, but under the granite backplate the failure has mixed fracture characteristics of quasi-cleavage and dimples.  相似文献

An extensive study on the fatigue performance of friction stir welded DH36 steel was carried out. The main focus of this experimental testing programme was fatigue testing accompanied by tensile tests, geometry measurements, hardness and residual stress measurements, and fracture surface examination. The SN curve for friction stir butt welded joints was generated and compared with the International Institute of Welding recommendations for conventional fusion butt welds. Friction stir welds of marine grade steel exceeded the relevant rules for fusion welding. This newly developed SN curve is being proposed for use in the relevant fatigue assessment guidelines for friction stir welding of low alloy steel. Fracture surfaces were examined to investigate the fatigue failure mechanism, which was found to be affected by the processing features generated by the friction stir welding tool.  相似文献

Mechanical properties and microstructure of friction stir-welded AZ31 based on variety post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) temperatures were evaluated, and an optimal PWHT condition was identified. At rotational speed of 1200?rev?min?1 and welding speed of 300?mm?min?1, the average yield tensile, tensile strength and elongation of friction stir-welded joints was 92.5?MPa, 199.1?MPa and 7.3%, respectively. It was found that (300°C – 1?h) heat treatment after welding was more beneficial than other heat treatments in enhancing the mechanical properties and homogenising grain size. The maximum yield and tensile strength was 139.9 and 238.4?MPa, respectively, tensile longitudinal and compressive transverse residual stress could be effectively eliminated, and the fatigue strength increased 34.2% comparing with as-welded joints.  相似文献

Hook defect (HD) seriously decreases the mechanical properties of friction stir spot welded (FSSW) joints. In this study, two methods were therefore used to eliminate the HD in pinless FSSW joints. The one is changing welding parameters such as rotating speed and dwell time. The other one is FSSW plus subsequent friction stir welding (FSSW-FSW), which is an innovative method proposed in this study. Experimental results showed that the HD in pinless FSSWed AA2024 joints was successfully eliminated by using FSSW-FSW, not by changing process parameters. The joints without HD exhibited a tensile–shear load of as much as 12 kN, which was higher than that of 6.9 kN in the joints with HD. Furthermore, it was proved that the tensile–shear load is not greatly improved only by increasing the nugget zone when HD still existed in the FSSW joints. In addition, the fracture morphology analysis demonstrated that the shear fracture of the FSSW-FSW joints took place along the boundary between the upper and lower sheets through the weld nugget, and the faying surface between the two sheets was completely sheared off.  相似文献

This paper presents the macro and microscopic fractography performed on fractures from fatigue cracks through friction stir welded joints. The welds were placed under different angles in the various specimens to study the influence of the yield strength and residual stress on fatigue crack growth. As a result, different behavior was observed at the macro level, depending on the type of alloy and orientation of the weld. The variations in rotation of the crack plane raised a number of questions regarding the mode of loading, i.e. mode I or mode II. The purpose of this study was to investigate the fracture surfaces at microscopic level to find explanations for the local macro behavior. Special focus was placed on the fracture surfaces on which features were observed indicating mode II fatigue crack growth.  相似文献

Four different tools with the pin eccentricity of 0.1 mm, 0.2 mm, 0.3 mm and 0.4 mm were designed to friction stir weld 10 mm thick AA7075-O plate. The effect of pin eccentricity on microstructure, secondary phase particles transformation and mechanical properties of the joints was investigated. The results show that the nugget area (ANZ) increases firstly and then decreases with increasing the pin eccentricity. When the pin with 0.2 mm eccentricity is applied, the ANZ is the largest; meanwhile the grains size is the smallest which is about 3 μm and secondary phase particles are the most dispersive in nugget zone compared with other tools. While the grains are coarsened to 7–11 μm as the eccentricity is more than 0.4 mm, some coarse hardening particles get to cluster in the thermo-mechanically affected zone. The joints produced by the pin with 0.2 mm eccentricity perform the highest tensile strength and elongation, which is attributed to better interfaces, finer grains and more dispersive secondary phase particles.  相似文献
