This article studied the compatibility of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMACl) in a dilute aqueous solution. At a total mixture concentration and a constant molecular weight of PDADMACl, it was found that interpolymer associations increase with the molecular weight and decrease with the degree of hydrolysis of the PVA sample (87–89 and 98–99%). From these results, it can be deduced that the compatibility of PVA and PDADMACl is due to specific intermolecular interactions that could be assigned mainly to electrostatic interactions between hydroxyl groups within PVA chains and ion atoms within PDADMACl. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Alginate is an interesting natural biopolymer for many of its merits and good biological properties. This paper investigates the electrospinning of sodium alginate (NaAlg), NaAlg/PVA‐ and NaAlg/PEO‐ blended systems. It was found in this research that although NaAlg can easily be dissolved in water, the aqueous NaAlg solution could not be electrospun into ultrafine nanofibers. To overcome the poor electrospinnability of NaAlg solution, synthetic polymers such as PEO and PVA solutions were blended with NaAlg solution to improve its spinnability. The SEM images of electrospun nanofibers showed that the alginate (2%, w/v)–PVA (8%, w/v) blended system in the volume ratio of 70 : 30 and the alginate (2%, w/v)–PEO (8% w/v) blended system in the volume ratio of 50 : 50 could be electrospun into finest and uniform nanofibers with average diameters of 118.3 nm (diameter distribution, 75.8–204 nm) and 99.1 nm (diameter distribution, 71–122 nm), respectively. Rheological studies showed a strong dependence of spinnability and fiber morphology on solution viscosity and thus on the alginate‐to‐synthetic polymer (PVA or PEO) blend ratios. FTIR studies indicate that there are the hydrogen bonding interactions due to the ether oxygen of PEO (or the hydroxyl groups of PVA) and the hydroxyl groups of NaAlg. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, the solvent effect on the miscibility between poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) in ternary polymer solutions was examined by the viscometric method. In these systems, we could understand that the used solvents, tetrahydrofuran (THF) or N,N‐dimethylformamide (DMF), mainly affect the interaction between PVC and PMMA, while prompting various miscible properties. In PVC/PMMA/THF solution, THF is a near θ‐solvent and a poor solvent for PVC and PMMA, respectively. The mixing of the tighter PMMA coils and more extended PVC coils in THF may cause the sea–island heterogeneous structure below the weight fraction of PMMA in the polymer mixture wPMMA = 0.7, resulting in immiscible PVC/PMMA mixtures. At wPMMA ≥ 0.7, the PVC/PMMA mixtures are relatively miscible, giving homogeneous polymer solutions. It means that the miscibility between PVC and PMMA depends on the composition of polymer mixture. However, due to the similar affinity of DMF to PVC and PMMA, PVC/PMMA/DMF solutions exhibit high miscibility between PVC and PMMA at about wPMMA = 0.5. © 2000 Society of Chemical Industry 相似文献

The chain conformation of sodium poly(styrenesulfonate) (NaPSS) in the semidilute aqueous solution, estimated from the plots of reduced viscosity versus segmental concentration, was found to be dependent on the degree of sulfonation and dissociation extent of counterions. The latter, altered by the content of sodium chloride external salt, was estimated from the ionic conductivity measurements on the basis of the modified Manning's conductivity theories with consideration of the influence of chain overlapping in the semidilute regime. The results indicate that the increase of chain extension of NaPSS with counterion dissociation was further enhanced by increasing the degree of sulfonation. 相似文献

The miscibility and crystallization behavior of poly(ethylene oxide)/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PEO/PVA) blends were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and polarizing optical microscopy. Because the glass‐transition temperature of PVA was near the melting point of PEO crystalline, an uncommon DSC procedure was used to determine the glass‐transition temperature of the PVA‐rich phase. From the DSC and DMA results, two glass‐transition temperatures, which corresponded to the PEO‐rich phase and the PVA‐rich phase, were observed. It was an important criterion to indicate that a blend was immiscible. It was also found that the preparation method of samples influenced the morphology and crystallization behaviors of PEO/PVA blends. The domain size of the disperse phase (PVA‐rich) for the solution‐cast blends was much larger than that for the coprecipitated blends. The crystallinity, spherulitic morphology, and isothermal crystallization behavior of PEO in the solution‐cast blends were similar to those of the neat PEO. On the contrary, these properties in the coprecipitated blends were different from those of the neat PEO. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 92: 1562–1568, 2004 相似文献

A major impurity in poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) is sodium acetate which remains after its preparation by a base catalyzed hydrolysis of poly(vinyl acetate), and the amount of sodium acetate in commercial PVA samples may reach several percentages. To establish an optimal condition for the removal of sodium acetate, several washing parameters such as washing period, solvent polarity, and temperature were investigated in this study. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy was successfully applied to determine the residual amounts of sodium acetate in the purified poly(vinyl alcohol). The relative integral value for the methyl peak of sodium acetate in PVA was converted to a relative mass value and finally to the sodium acetate content contained in PVA. The results showed that over 95% of sodium acetate in PVA was removed by a washing of PVA with distilled water within 2 h. When methanol was used as a washing solvent, a higher temperature than room temperature was required for an effective removal of sodium acetate. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) hydrogels based on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and 1‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone (VP) were prepared by radical polymerization using 2,2‐dimethyl‐2‐phenylacetophenone (DMPAP) and methylene bisacrylicamide (MBAAm) as initiator and crosslinker, respectively. The thermal characterization of the IPNs was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and dielectric analysis (DEA). Depressions of the melting temperatures of PVA segments in IPNs were observed with increasing VP content via the DSC. The DEA was employed to ascertain the glass transition temperature (Tg) of IPNs. From the result of DEA, IPNs exhibited two Tgs indicating the presence of phase separation in the IPN. The thermal decomposition of IPNs was investigated using TGA and appeared at near 270°C. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 86: 1844–1847, 2002 相似文献

Polyelectrolyte complex diazoresin–poly(sodium styrene sulfonate) (DR–PSS) from diazoresin (DR) as cationic polyelctrolyte and poly(sodium styrene sulfonate) (PSS) as anionic polyelectrolyte does not dissolve in water or organic solvent because of its electrostatic crosslinking structure. It was found that the complex dissolves considerably aqueous solution of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and confirmed that the DR–PSS—SDS system possesses extraordinary thermostability as well as high photosensitivity and can be used directly to produce a photoimaging coating. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Nanofiltration membranes based on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and ionic polymers, such as sodium alginate (SA) and chitosan, were prepared by casting the respective polymer solutions. The membranes prepared from PVA or PVA–ionic polymer blend were crosslinked in a isopropanol solution using glutaraldehyde as a crosslinking agent. The membranes were characterized with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X‐ray diffractometry and swelling test. The membranes crosslinked through the acetal linkage formation between the OH groups of PVA and the ionomer and glutaraldehyde appeared to be semicrystalline. To study the permeation properties, the membranes were tested with various feed solutions [sodium sulfate, sodium chloride, poly(ethylene glycol) with 600 g/mol of molecular weight (PEG 600), and isopropyl alcohol]. For example, the permeance and the solute rejection of the 1000 ppm sodium sulfate at 600 psi of upstream pressure through the PVA membrane were 0.55 m3/m2 day and over 99%, respectively. The effects of the ionomers on the permeation properties of the PVA membranes were studied using the PVA–SA and PVA–chitosan blend membranes. The addition of small amount of ionic polymers (5 wt %) made the PVA membranes more effective for the organic solute rejection without decrease in their fluxes. The rejection ratios of the PEG 600 and isopropanol were increased substantially. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 72: 1755–1762, 1999 相似文献

A straightforward method for determination of the hydration number of polymer in aqueous solution based on ice-melting technique of DSC is proposed. The simple yet precise method has been applied to determine the hydration number of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) in aqueous solution covering a wide range of concentrations, from 0.005 to 0.3 g(solute)/g(solution), for three samples with different molar masses. The hydration number of PVA maintains a constant lower value of 2.5 when the concentration exceeds 0.2 g(solute)/g(solution). It increases to a value of 7 when the concentration decreases to the overlap concentration C∗ of the polymer, where C∗ was estimated as the reciprocal of its intrinsic viscosity. For solutions of C < C∗, the hydration number keeps constant again at the value of 7. This behavior evidently demonstrates that PVA has two hydration states, one occurs at the dilute regime and the other occurs at concentrated regime. The concentration dependent transition from one state to another is treated mathematically by a quantitative formula which involves two parameters: one denotes the transition concentration and the other denotes the width of the transition region. The transition concentration decreases linearly with increasing molar mass resembling the behavior of molar mass dependence of overlap concentration. The structural features for the two states of hydrated PVA are briefly discussed. 相似文献

The influence of poly(vinyl alcohol) suspending agents on suspension poly(vinyl chloride) morphology
Stephen Ormondroyd 《Polymer International》1988,20(4):353-359
The requirements for PVC suspension resin have changed considerably in the last few years, so much so that few companies have products on their ranges that are more than 4 or 5 years old. The suspending agent has a crucial influence on the morphology of the resin, so the changes in resin characteristics have largely been achieved by changes in the suspending agent systems. After a brief review of the mechanism of PVC suspension polymerisation, the properties of polymers made using PVOH suspending agents are related to changes in the latter. The effect of variations in PVAc degree of hydrolysis and viscosity are related to changes in surface tension. Methods of achieving higher porosity by using low hydrolysis co-suspending agents are described. It is shown that higher bulk densities can be achieved by delayed addition of the PVOH. Levels of conjugated unsaturation and copolymer distributions are also shown to have important influences. 相似文献

The effects of tacticities on the characteristics of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanowebs prepared by an electrospinning technique were investigated. PVA webs composed of uniform nanofibers with syndiotactic dyad (s‐dyad) contents of 53.5 and 57.3% were successfully obtained with electrospinning. By changing processing parameters such as the initial polymer concentration, applied voltage, and tip‐to‐collector distance, we found suitable conditions for forming PVA webs with uniform nanofibers. PVAs of higher s‐dyad contents were prepared at a lower solution concentration and at a higher applied voltage because of the easy formation of syndiotactic PVA chain entanglements at a very low polymer concentration. The average diameter of the nanofibers in a PVA web with the higher s‐dyad content of 57.3% (ca. 240 nm) was thinner than that of the nanofibers in a PVA web with the lowers‐dyad content of 53.5% (ca. 270 nm). In addition, the crystallinity and thermal stability were greatly increased with an increase in the s‐dyad content. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 2007 相似文献

Branched and network poly(vinyl alcohols) (PVAs) were prepared with inter-acetalization of the PVA with aldehyde groups at the chain ends which was prepared by the cleavage of 1,2 glycol bonds in commercial PVA. The numbers of branches estimated from molecular weights were compared with those estimated by theory. Huggins' constant and crystallinity decreased with increasing branch number. Dissolution of branched PVAs into dimethylsulphoxide was not so easy compared with commercial PVA. The colour of branched PVA–iodine complex decreased rapidly with standing while that of commercial PVA decreased gradually. Network PVAs with Young's modulus of 1–8 MPa were prepared. 相似文献

Preparation and electroresponsive property of poly(vinyl alcohol)/sodium alginate composite hydrogel
Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/sodium alginate composite hydrogel was prepared by solidifing the blending solution of PVA and sodium alginate, then freezing and thawing repeatedly. In the direct current electric field, the composite hydrogel in aqueous NaCl solution swelled, contracted, and bent. The gel's bending speed and maximum bending degree increased with increase in the electric field intensity and the concentration of NaCl solution. The maximum bending degree increased with increase in the sodium alginate content in the composition hydrogel. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 101: 3493–3496, 2006 相似文献

The dielectric constant ε′ and loss factor ε″ of deionized water and poly(vinyl alcohol) in aqueous solutions are measured in the frequency region 200 MHz to 20 GHz at four different temperatures (25, 35, 45 and 55 °C). Complex plane plots (ie ε″ vs ε′) are drawn to obtain the static dielectric constant ε0, high frequency dielectric constant ε∞, distribution parameter α and average relaxation time τ0. The variations of dielectric constants with increasing solvent concentration and temperature are discussed in terms of solute–solvent and solute–solute interactions. The average relaxation time τ0 of poly(vinyl alcohol) aqueous solutions is found to the very short. It is also observed that the relaxation time is almost independent of the viscosity of the solution. The effect of water concentration on macromolecular size, shape and flexibility of the molecular chain are discussed using the observed values of dielectric relaxation times at different temperatures. The possibility of multiple dielectric dispersion is also discussed with concentration variation. © 2000 Society of Chemical Industry 相似文献

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/waterborne polyurethane (WBPU) nanofiber mats were prepared using electrospinning method with aqueous solutions. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X‐ray diffraction (XRD), thermal gravimetric analyzer (TGA), and tensile strength testing machine (ZWICK) were used to characterize the morphology and properties of the PVA/WBPU nanofiber mats. The results showed that the morphologies of PVA/WBPU nanofiber mats changed with the total solid concentration and the mass ratio of PVA/WBPU in the spinning solution. The tensile strength and thermal stability of the fibers could be significantly affected by the WBPU contents. The electrospun PVA/WBPU membranes showed higher water uptake, which would have potential applications in wound dressings. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2011 相似文献

This paper reports on the interpolymer complex formation and polymer blends between poly(monoethyl itaconate) (PMEI) and poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP). The formation of the interpolymer complex was found to depend upon the solvent medium. Stoichiometry of the complexes prepared from methanol solutions, as calculated from elemental analysis, is close to 1 : 1. Specific interactions of PMEI/PVP complexes and blends of these polymers have been characterized by FTIR. Strong hydrogen bonding for complexes and blends has been found. A calorimetric study of the complexes and blends has been performed over a wide temperature range. 相似文献
