2,6‐Bis(β‐naphthoxy)benzonitrile (BNOBN) was synthesized by reaction of β‐naphthol with 2,6‐difluorobenzonitrile in N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone (NMP) in the presence of KOH and K2CO3. Poly(ether ketone ether ketone ketone)(PEKEKK) /poly(ether ether ketone ketone) (PEEKK) copolymers containing naphthalene and pendant cyano groups were obtained by electrophilic Friedel‐Crafts polycondensation of terephthaloyl chloride (TPC) with varying mole proportions of 4,4′‐diphenoxybenzophenone (DPOBP) and 2,6‐bis(β‐naphthoxy)benzonitrile (BNOBN) using 1,2‐dichloroethane (DCE) as solvent and NMP as Lewis base in the presence of anhydrous AlCl3. The resulting polymers were characterized by various analytical techniques, such as FTIR, DSC, TG, and WAXD. The results indicated that the crystallinity and melting temperature of the polymers decreased with increase in concentration of the BNOBN units in the polymer, the glass transition temperature of the polymers increased with increase in concentration of the BNOBN units in the polymer. Thermogravimetric studies showed that all the polymers were stable up to 536°C in N2 atmosphere. The copolymers have good resistance to acidity, alkali, and organic solvents. Because of the melting temperature (Tm) depression with increase in the BNOBN content in the reaction system, the processability of the resultant coplymers could be effectively improved. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A procedure for obtaining high performance large internal diameter (ID; >1 mm) hollow fiber microfiltration membranes from poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) is presented. A simple mixture of isomers of diphenylphthalate is a good solvent for employing the thermal‐phase inversion process to obtain PEEK membranes. Obtaining large ID hollow fibers with substantial transmembrane flux requires sufficient melt strength during spinning to prevent excessive draw of the extruding fiber. The use of a second leachable polymer to the blend satisfies the conditions, and polysulphone (PS) is found to provide superior membranes relative to either poly(etherimide) (PEI) or poly(ether sulphone) (PES) as a second polymer. PEEK membranes obtained by this process yield better chemical resistance to a concentrated warm surfactant/oil solution. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 72: 175–181, 1999  相似文献

In this work, virgin and sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) films (PEEK and SPEEK, respectively) have been studied by dynamic mechanical analysis, modulated differential scanning calorimetry, wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction, birefringence, and optical microscopy. The properties of the unmodified polymer have been addressed to assess the original morphological characteristics and the changes induced by sulfonation. In general, the introduction of ionic groups in the polymer backbone alters dramatically the intrinsic properties of the parent material. The particular thermomechanical response exhibited by PEEK and SPEEK samples, characterized by a hysteresis loop, can be explained by the reversible and irreversible relaxation–orientation of the microstructure, even in the sub‐Tg region. The results showed that the preparation conditions largely determine the nonequilibrium morphological features of both compression‐molded PEEK films and solvent‐cast SPEEK membranes. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of thio‐containing poly(ether ether ketone) (PEESK) polymers was synthesized by the introduction of thio groups from 4,4′ thiodiphenol (TDP) into the poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) structure via reaction between the phenol and aromatic fluoride groups. The effect of the thio groups on the properties of the PEESK materials was investigated. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis and X‐ray diffraction (XRD) patterns show a depression in the crystallinity of the PEESKs with incorporation of the content of thio groups in the backbones. The crystalline structure was identified as an orthorhombic structure with lattice constants of a = 7.52 Å, b = 5.86 Å and c = 10.24 Å for all crystallizable PEESKs. The crystalline structures of the thio‐containing PEEK polymers were the same as that of the neat PEEK, which means the thio‐containing block in the whole thio‐containing PEEK molecule is almost excluded from the crystalline structure and the crystals are completely formed by ‘non‐thio’ blocks only. Due to the glass transition temperature (Tg) and melting temperature (Tm) depression with increase in the TDP content in the reaction system, the processability of the resultant thio‐containing PEEKs could be effectively improved. The physical form of polymers is often important for carrying out subsequent processing operations. For example, fine powders are desirable for molding and sintering compounds because they consolidate to produce void free components. The objective of this work is to prepare fine polymeric particulates suitable for processing into fiber reinforced polymer matrix composites. Micron size particles of poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) were prepared by rapidly quenching solutions of these materials. PEEK pellets were dissolved at temperatures near the PEEK melting point in a mixture of terphenyls and quaterphenyls; then the solution was quenched to a temperature between the Tg and Tm (≈ 225°C) by adding a room temperature eutectic mixture of diphenyl ether and biphenyl. A supersaturated, metastable solution of PEEK resulted, causing rapid nucleation. Fine PEEK particles rapidly crystallized from this solution. The average particle size was measured using transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and by light scattering of aqueous suspensions which had been fractionated by centrifugation. The average particle diameter was about 0.6 μm. Three dimensional photomicrographs obtained via atomic force microscopy showed some aggregates in the suspensions. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The sulfonation kinetics of fluorine ended poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) in solution in 95.9% and 96.8% concentrated sulfuric acid was studied with the help of a model compound representative of the PEEK chain repeat unit. The reaction rate of the model compound sulfonation was found to be first order with respect to the aromatic ring to be sulfonated. Consequently, PEEK kinetic data were treated following a first order with respect to the unsulfonated repeat unit concentration. Two rate‐slowing effects were detected. They were attributed to ‘long range’ electronic effects resulting from the inductive nature of the fluorine atom, and from the electron‐withdrawing character of the grafted sulfonic acid group. © 2001 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

A series of modified poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) polymers were synthesized by introduction of addition ether groups from dihydroxydiphenyl ether (DHDE) into the PEEK structure. The inherent viscosity of the DHDE-modified PEEK increased with reaction time at 320 °C. DSC thermograms showed the melting points of the obtained PEEK decreased with the increase of the DHDE content in the backbone. The degradation temperature (Td) was slightly decreased by the introduction of DHDE. The crystallinity as measured via the X-ray diffraction (XRD) increases with the introduction of DHDE into the modified PEEK. The crystalline structure was identified as an orthorhombic structure with lattice constants a = 7.72 Å, b = 5.86 Å, and c = 10.24 Å. Due to the glass transition temperature (Tg) and the melting temperature (Tm) decreasing with the increase of the DHDE content in the reaction system. the processability of the resultant PEEK could be improved through this DHDE modification.  相似文献

Rheological properties of the blends of poly(aryl ether ether ketone) (PEEK) with liquid crystalline poly(aryl ether ketone) containing substituted 3‐trifluoromethylbenzene side group (F‐PAEK), prepared by solution precipitation, have been investigated by rheometer. Dynamic rheological behaviors of the blends under the oscillatory shear mode are strongly dependent on blend composition. For PEEK‐rich blends, the systems show flow curves similar to those of the pure PEEK, i.e., dynamic storage modulus G′ is larger than dynamic loss modulus G″, showing the feature of elastic fluid. For F‐PAEK‐rich systems, the rheological behavior of the blends has a resemblance to pure F‐PAEK, i.e., G″ is greater than G′, showing the characteristic of viscous fluid. When the PEEK content is in the range of 50–70%, the blends exhibit an unusual rheological behavior, which is the result of phase inversion between the two components. Moreover, as a whole, the complex viscosity values of the blends are between those of two pure polymers and decrease with increasing F‐PAEK content. However, at 50% weight fraction of PEEK, the viscosity‐composition curves exhibit a local maximum, which may be mainly attributed to the phase separation of two components at such a composition. The changes of G′ and G″ with composition show a trend similar to that of complex viscosity. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 102: 4040–4044, 2006  相似文献

Film membranes from the thermoplastic poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) have been extruded and tested for their microfiltration and ultrafiltration performance. High‐performance asymmetric membranes have been obtained by extruding polymer blends of PEEK, polysulphone, and a small molecule solvent mixture, and then by removing the polysulphone and solvent in a subsequent extraction step. The process for making ultrafiltration membranes differs from microfiltration membranes only in the relative blend components, and the temperature of the film pick‐up rolls. Processing parameters with important effects on the membrane performance have been identified. Microfiltration membranes are characterized by their pore‐size distributions and SEM, and ultrafiltration membranes by their rejection of bovine serum albumin, bubble point, and SEM. Composite membrane for nanofiltration utilizing the PEEK ultrafiltration membrane as a substrate performed similarly to a commercial membrane for the same purpose. This work details the best method for making PEEK film membranes published to date. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 74: 1146–1155, 1999  相似文献

2,6‐Diphenoxybenzonitrile (DPOBN) was synthesized by reaction of phenol with 2,6‐difluorobenzonitrile in N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone in the presence of KOH and K2CO3. Poly(aryl ether ketone ketone)/poly(aryl ether ether ketone ketone) copolymers with pendant cyano groups were prepared by the Friedel–Crafts electrophilic substitution reaction of terephthaloyl chloride with varying mole proportions of diphenyl ether and DPOBN using 1,2‐dichloroethane as solvent and N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone as Lewis base in the presence of anhydrous AlCl3. The resulting polymers were characterized by various analytical techniques, such as FT‐IR, differential scanning calorimeter, thermal gravimetric analysis, and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction. The crystallinity and melting temperature of the polymers were found to decrease with increase in concentration of the DPOBN units in the polymer. Thermogravimetric studies showed that all the polymers were stable up to 514°C in N2 atmosphere. The glass transition temperature was found to increase with increase in concentration of the DPOBN units in the polymer when the molar ratios of DPOBN to DPE ranged from 10/90 to 30/70. The copolymers containing 30–40 mol % of the DPOBN units exhibit excellent thermostability at (350 ± 10)°C and have good resistance to acidity, alkali, and organic solvents. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new monomer, N,N′‐bis(4‐phenoxybenzoyl)‐m‐phenylenediamine (BPPD), was prepared by condensation of m‐phenylenediamine with 4‐phenoxybenzoyl chloride in N,N‐dimethylacetamide (DMAc). A series of novel poly(ether amide ether ketone) (PEAEK)/poly(ether ketone ketone) (PEKK) copolymers were synthesized by the electrophilic Friedel‐Crafts solution copolycondensation of terephthaloyl chloride (TPC) with a mixture of diphenyl ether (DPE) and BPPD, over a wide range of DPE/BPPD molar ratios, in the presence of anhydrous AlCl3 and N‐methylpyrrolidone (NMP) in 1,2‐dichloroethane (DCE). The influence of reaction conditions on the preparation of copolymers was examined. The copolymers obtained were characterized by different physicochemical techniques. The copolymers with 10–25 mol % BPPD were semicrystalline and had remarkably increased Tgs over commercially available PEEK and PEKK due to the incorporation of amide linkages in the main chains. The copolymers III and IV with 20–25 mol % BPPD had not only high Tgs of 184–188°C, but also moderate Tms of 323–344°C, having good potential for the melt processing. The copolymers III and IV had tensile strengths of 103.7–105.3 MPa, Young's moduli of 3.04–3.11 GPa, and elongations at break of 8–9% and exhibited outstanding thermal stability and good resistance to organic solvents. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In order to obtain poly(ether ether ketone)s having enhanced solubility and processability without extreme loss of other properties, a series of copoly(ether ether ketone)s (Co‐PEEKs) with pendant phenyl groups were synthesized from 1,1‐bi(4‐hydroxyphenyl)‐1‐phenylethane (ph‐BPA), hydroquinone and 4,4′‐difluorobenzophenone via aromatic nucleophilic substitution reaction. The structures and properties of the Co‐PEEKs were characterized using Fourier transform infrared and 1H NMR spectroscopies, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction and solubility testing. These Co‐PEEKs have inherent viscosities in the range 0.14–1.09 dL g?1, and their number‐average and weight‐average molecular weights reach 72 659 and 163 400 g mol?1, respectively. The Co‐PEEK with the lowest content of ph‐BPA has a semi‐crystalline nature and is only soluble in 98% sulfuric acid. However, with an increase of ph‐BPA in the Co‐PEEKs, they become amorphous and readily soluble in a wide range of organic solvents and can afford tough films. These Co‐PEEKs have glass transition temperatures of 137–180 °C depending on the content of ph‐BPA. All the Co‐PEEKs have initial degradation temperatures above 480 °C in nitrogen atmosphere. Thus, these Co‐PEEKs with excellent thermal stability, good solubility and processability have potential for use in high‐performance films, coatings, hollow fiber membranes, etc. Copyright © 2011 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Hydrophobic poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) were modified by sulfonation at different temperatures (22, 36, 45, and 55°C) and varying period of time with concentrated sulfuric acid used as solvent. A kinetic study was carried out based on the assumption that sulfonation reaction is a second-order reaction, which takes place preferentially in the aromatic ring between the two ether ( O ) links (the first type substitution), and there is only one substituent attached to each repeat unit of the PEEK before the complete substitution of this preferred aromatic ring. More than 100% substitution was observed in experiment. All the data with substitution degree less than 95% agree fairly well with the kinetic behavior of the second-order reaction. The reaction rate coefficient and activation energy for first type substitution were obtained. The sulfonated PEEK samples were characterized in terms of ion-exchange capacity (IEC), 1H-NMR, contact angle, and solubility. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Poly(aryl ether ketone)s (PAEKs) are a class of high‐performance engineering thermoplastics known for their excellent combination of chemical, physical and mechanical properties, and the synthesis of semicrystalline PAEKs with increased glass transition temperatures (Tg) is of much interest. In the work reported, a series of novel copolymers of poly(ether ketone ketone) (PEKK) and poly(ether amide ether amide ether ketone ketone) were synthesized by electrophilic solution polycondensation of terephthaloyl chloride with a mixture of diphenyl ether and N,N′‐bis(4‐phenoxybenzoyl)‐4,4′‐diaminodiphenyl ether (BPBDAE) under mild conditions. The copolymers obtained were characterized using various physicochemical techniques. The copolymers with 10–35 mol% BPBDAE are semicrystalline and have markedly increased Tg over commercially available poly(ether ether ketone) and PEKK due to the incorporation of amide linkages in the main chain. The copolymers with 30–35 mol% BPBDAE not only have high Tg of 178–186 °C, but also moderate melting temperatures of 335–339 °C, having good potential for melt processing. The copolymers with 30–35 mol% BPBDAE have tensile strengths of 102.4–103.8 MPa, Young's moduli of 2.33–2.45 GPa and elongations at break of 11.7–13.2%, and exhibit high thermal stability and good resistance to organic solvents. The absorption and subsequent desorption behaviors of amorphous polymer films of PEEK poly(ether ether ketone), PEEKK poly(ether ether ketone ketone), and PEKK poly(ether ketone ketone) in solvent of 1,2-dichloroethane (C2H4Cl2) are investigated and compared. The equilibrium absorption weight (M) of these polymers is related to their molecular ketone content or molecular chain rigidity and also to the experimental conditions. Especially, at a certain temperature, the molecular chains in the solvent can be polarized, which leads to producing greater M for polymer films; for example, at 60°C, M = 46% for PEEK and M = 65% for PEKK. The pseudodiffusion coefficients for PEEK, PEEKK, and PEKK all surpass the 6.0 × 10−12 m2 s−1. The polymer's molecular polarization has been proved in concentrated sulfur acid. Results also show that amorphous resin's films become white and creeped in dichloroethane, which is more serious when metaphenyl links are introduced into PEEKK or PEKK molecular main chains. The residual solvent of 1% or so often exists in the films, even though a long desorption time (over 100 h) has been proceeded. Absorption has induced crystallization of amorphous polymer films, but this crystallization process is slightly different from that of the films crystallized from both the glassy state and the melting state in the solvent, which makes the amorphous interlayers grow progressively and more condensely; thus, the crystallized films will have higher Tg's than these crystallized under annealing condition. The morphology results have shown that the solvent-crystallized films are less toughened than the amorphous ones because of the intermediate layer between the induced crystallized area and the amorphous area in the core. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Tensile mechanical properties of poly(aryl ether ether ketone) (PEEK) films showing different thermal histories have been investigated at room temperature to point out the main key microstructural features governing properties over a wide strain rate range, i.e., from 10−5 to 300 s−1. The strain rate sensitivity of the mechanical properties of amorphous PEEK films significantly depends on the analyzed strain rate range: i.e., 1) from 10−5 to 10 s−1, the strain rate dependence of both apparent Young's modulus and yield stress is weak; and 2) from 10−1 to 200 s−1, both parameters significantly increase. Thus, based on the definition of the relationships between temperature, strain rate, and frequency respectively used for tensile tests and dynamic mechanical spectrometry, it was shown that the mechanical behavior of PEEK films at room temperature could be governed by similar molecular mechanisms as those giving rise to the β1 and β2 transitions. The Eyring analysis shows that motions of five or six monomers are implied at the beginning of the plastic deformation of amorphous and semi-crystalline PEEK films, while at higher strain rates, shorter chain segments are concerned. Thus, the crystalline phase only induces an increase in the stress level because of the reinforcement effect but does not modify the molecular mechanisms governing the plastic deformation of PEEK films at room temperature. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Poly(ether ether ketone)s and poly(ether ether ketone ketone)s containing pendant pentadecyl chains were synthesized by polycondensation of each of the two bisphenol monomers viz, 1,1,1‐[bis(4‐hydroxyphenyl)‐4′‐pentadecylphenyl]ethane and 1,1‐bis(4‐hydroxyphenyl)‐3‐pentadecyl cyclohexane with activated aromatic dihalides namely, 4,4′‐difluorobenzophenone, and 1,3‐bis(4‐fluorobenzoyl)benzene in a solvent mixture of N,N‐dimethylacetamide and toluene, in the presence of anhydrous potassium carbonate. Polymers were isolated as white fibrous materials with inherent viscosities and number average molecular weights in the range 0.70–1.27 dL g?1 and 76,620–1,36,720, respectively. Poly(ether ether ketone)s and poly(ether ether ketone ketone)s were found to be soluble at room temperature in organic solvents such as chloroform, dichloromethane, tetrahydrofuran, and pyridine and could be cast into tough, transparent, and flexible films from their solutions in chloroform. Wide angle X‐ray diffraction patterns exhibited a broad halo at around 2θ = ~ 19° indicating that the polymers containing pentadecyl chains were amorphous in nature. In the small‐angle region, diffuse reflections of a typically layered structures resulting from the packing of pentadecyl side chains were observed. The temperature at 10% weight loss, obtained from TG curves, for poly(ether ether ketone)s and poly(ether ether ketone ketone)s were in the range 416–459°C, indicating their good thermal stability. A substantial drop in glass transition temperatures (68–78°C) was observed for poly(ether ether ketone)s and poly(ether ether ketone ketone)s due to “internal plasticization” effect of flexible pendant pentadecyl chains. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. BACKGROUND: The introduction of poly(ether ether ketone)‐based carbon‐fiber composites accelerated the application of poly(ether ether ketone)s in advanced composite materials. In order to improve the compatibility and processability with reinforced components, polymers with low melt viscosity are preferable. RESULTS: Novel fully aromatic macrocycle‐terminated poly(aryl ether ketone)s (MCPAEKs) were prepared by condensation of macrocyclic aryl ether ketone dimers containing hydroxyphenyl groups and fluorine end‐capped poly(aryl ether ketone) oligomers. Compared with liner poly(aryl ether ketone)s, MCPAEKs showed much lower melt viscosities at low temperature. In the presence of caesium fluoride, the crosslinking reaction of MCPAEKs afforded fully aromatic thermoset poly(aryl ether ketone)s by ring‐opening reaction. CONCLUSION: The MCPAEKs exhibited high thermal stability due to their wholly aromatic structures. After crosslinking, the glass transition temperatures and complex melt viscosities of the polymers were increased greatly. Although there was some residual cesium fluoride or phenoxides produced by ring‐opening reaction, the thermoset poly(aryl ether ketone)s obtained had good thermal stability with temperatures at 5% weight loss above 475 °C.
