Synthesis and characterization of a novel toughener–compatibilizer for polypropylene (PP)–montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposites were conducted to provide enhanced mechanical and thermal properties. Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) blocks were synthetically grafted onto maleic anhydride‐grafted polystyrene‐block‐poly(ethylene/butylene)‐block‐polystyrene (SEBS‐g‐MA). Special attention was paid to emphasize the effect of PEO‐grafted SEBS (SEBS‐g‐PEO) against SEBS‐g‐MA on morphology, static/dynamic mechanical properties and surface hydrophilicity of the resultant blends and nanocomposites. It was found that the silicate layers of neat MMT are well separated by PEO chains chemically bonded to nonpolar SEBS polymer without needing any organophilic modification of the clay as confirmed by X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy analyses. From scanning electron microscopy analyses, elastomeric domains interacting with MMT layers via PEO sites were found to be distributed in the PP matrix with higher number and smaller sizes than the corresponding blend. As a benefit of PEO grafting, SEBS‐g‐PEO‐containing nanocomposite exhibited not only higher toughness/impact strength but also increased creep recovery, as compared to corresponding SEBS‐g‐MA‐containing nanocomposite and neat PP. The damping parameter of the same nanocomposite was also found to be high in a broad range of temperatures as another advantage of the SEBS‐g‐PEO toughener–compatibilizer. The water contact angles of the blends and nanocomposites were found to be lower than that of neat hydrophobic PP which is desirable for finishing processes such as dyeing and coating. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

In this study, poly(ethylene terephthalate)/organo‐montmorillonite (PET/OMMT) nanocomposites were melt‐compounded using twin screw extruder followed by injection molding. Maleic anhydride grafted styrene‐ethylene/butylene‐styrene (SEBS‐g‐MAH) was used to improve the impact properties of the PET/OMMT nanocomposites. The notched and un‐notched impact strength of PET/OMMT nanocomposites increased at about 2.5 times and 5.5 times by the addition of 5 wt % of SEBS‐g‐MAH. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) scans were taken from the polished surface of both PET/OMMT and SEBS‐g‐MAH toughened PET/OMMT nanocomposites. The addition of SEBS‐g‐MAH altered the phase structure and clay dispersion in PET matrix. It was found that some of the OMMT silicate layers were encapsulated by SEBS‐g‐MAH. Further, the addition of SEBS‐g‐MAH decreased the degree of crystallinity of the PET/OMMT nanocomposites. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2012  相似文献

To develop new tribomaterials for mechanical sliding parts, investigations were carried out on the influence of adding styrene–ethylene/butylene–styrene block copolymer (SEBS) on the rheological, mechanical, and tribological properties of polyamide 6 (PA6) nanocomposite, which is a commercial product of layered silicate (clay) filled polyamide 6 (PA6/Clay). Two kinds of block copolymers, unmodified SEBS (SEBS) and maleic anhydride‐grafted SEBS (SEBS‐g‐MA), were added with PA6/Clay nanocomposite. Dynamic viscoelastic properties in the molten state of these nanocomposites and their tensile, impact, and tribological properties of these nanocomposites were evaluated. Dynamic viscoelastic properties were found to increase with the addition of SEBS and were influenced, in particular, by block copolymers containing SEBS‐g‐MA. Influence of the addition of SEBS on mechanical properties of these systems differed for each mechanical property. Although tensile properties decreased with SEBS, Izod impact properties were improved with the addition of SEBS‐g‐MA. Tribological properties were improved with the addition of block copolymer, and the influence of the amount of addition was higher than the type of block copolymer used. These results indicate that new tribomaterials developed have sufficient balance amongst moldability, mechanical, and tribological properties. POLYM. Nanocomposites based on poly(styrene‐b‐ethylene‐ran‐butylene‐b‐styrene) (SEBS) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) (SEBS/CNT) as well as SEBS grafted with maleic anhydride (SEBS‐MA)/CNT were successfully prepared for electromagnetic shielding applications. Both SEBS/CNT and SEBS‐MA/CNT nanocomposites were prepared by melt compounding and were post‐processed using two different techniques: tape extrusion and compression moulding. The different nanocomposites were characterized by Raman spectroscopy and rheological analysis. Their mechanical properties, electrical properties (10-2–105 Hz) and electromagnetic shielding effectiveness (8.2–12.4 GHz) were also evaluated. The results showed that the CNT loading amount, the presence of MA in the matrix and the shaping technique used strongly influence the final morphologies and properties of the nanocomposites. Whilst the nanocomposite containing 8 wt% CNTs prepared by compression moulding presented the highest electromagnetic shielding effectiveness (with a value of 56.73 dB, which corresponds to an attenuation of 99.9996% of the incident radiation), the nanocomposite containing 5 wt% CNTs prepared by tape extrusion presented the best balance between electromagnetic and mechanical properties and was a good candidate to be used as an efficient flexible electromagnetic interference shielding material. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Polystyrene/organoclay nanocomposites were prepared by melt intercalation in the presence of elastomeric impact modifiers. Three different types of organically modified montmorillonites; Cloisite® 30B, 15A, and 25A, were used as reinforcement, whereas poly [styrene‐b‐(ethylene‐co‐butylene)‐b‐styrene] (SEBS‐g‐MA) and poly(ethylene‐b‐butyl acrylate‐b‐glycidyl methacrylate) (E‐BA‐GMA) elastomeric materials were introduced to act as impact modifier. Owing to its single aliphatic tail on its modifier and absence of hydroxyl groups, Cloisite® 25A displayed the best dispersion in the polystyrene matrix, and mostly delaminated silicate layers were obtained in the presence of SEBS‐g‐MA. This was attributed to the higher viscosity of SEBS‐g‐MA compared with both E‐BA‐GMA and poly(styrene‐co‐vinyloxazolin) (PS). In addition, the compatibility between SEBS‐g‐MA and PS was found to be better in comparison to the compatibility between E‐BA‐GMA and PS owing to the soluble part of SEBS‐g‐MA in PS. The clay particles were observed to be located mostly in the dispersed phase leading to larger elastomeric domains compared with binary PS/elastomer blends. The enlargement of the elastomeric domains resulted in higher impact strength values in the presence of organoclay. Good dispersion of Cloisite® 25A in PS/SEBS‐g‐MA blends enhanced the tensile properties of this nanocomposite produced. It was observed that the change in the strength and stiffness of the ternary nanocomposites mostly depend on the type of the elastomeric material. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Different polymers containing sulfonic groups attached to the phenyl rings were prepared by sulfonation of polystyrene (PS) and styrene‐block‐(ethylene‐co‐1‐butene)‐block‐styrene (SEBS). The sulfonation degree (SD) was varied between 1 and 20 mol% of the styrene units. Polyphase materials containing sulfonated units were prepared by blending styrene‐block‐butadiene‐block‐styrene (SBS), with both sulfonated PS and sulfonated SEBS in a Brabender mixer. Such a procedure was performed as an alternative route to direct sulfonation of SBS which is actually not selective towards benzene rings because of the great reactivity of the double bonds in polybutadiene (PB) blocks to sulfonation agents. Thermal and dynamic‐mechanic analysis, together with morphology characterization of the blends, is consistent with obtaining partially compatible blends characterized by higher Tg of the polystyrene domains and improved thermal stability. © 2001 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Thermoplastic elastomer (TPE)–clay nanocomposites based on poly[styrene–(ethylene‐co‐butylene)–styrene] triblock copolymer (SEBS) were prepared. Natural sodium montmorillonite (MMT) clay was organically modified by octadecyl amine to produce an amine‐modified hydrophobic nanoclay (OC). Commercially available Cloisite 20A (CL20) and Cloisite 10A, tallow ammine modified nanoclays, were also used. The intergallery spacing of MMT increased on amine modification as suggested by the shifting of the X‐ray diffraction (XRD) peak from 7.6 to 4.5 and 3.8° in the cases of OC and CL20, respectively. The latter demonstrated no XRD peak when it was used at 2 and 4 parts phr in the SEBS system. Transmission electron microscopy studies showed the intercalation–exfoliation morphology in SEBS containing 4 parts of CL204–SEBS, agglomeration in SEBS having 4 parts of MMT, and mixed morphology in SEBS with 4 parts of OC systems. Locations of the clay particles were indicated by the atomic force micrographs. Mechanical and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis studies confirmed the best properties with the CL204–SEBS nanocomposites. Significant improvements in mechanical properties such as tensile strength, modulus, work to break, and elongation at break were achieved with the CL204–SEBS in polymer‐layered silicate nanocomposites. Dynamic mechanical studies further showed the affinity of the organoclays toward both segments of the TPE and a compatibilization effect with CL20 at a 4‐phr loading. Atomic force microscopy showed distinctly different morphologies in nanocomposites prepared through solution and melt processing. Comparisons of the mechanical, dynamic mechanical, and morphological properties of the nanocomposites prepared by melt and solution intercalation processes were done. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. BACKGROUND: In a polymer–metal sliding system, the formation and performance of the transfer film have important effects on the tribological behavior of the polymer. In order to reveal the wear mechanism of polyamide 66 (PA 66) and its composites consisting of styrene–(ethylene/butylene)–styrene triblock rubber grafted with maleic anhydride (SEBS‐g‐MA) particles and organoclay nano‐layers, the tribological behavior and transfer films of polyamide 66 and its composites were investigated under dry sliding. RESULTS: The incorporation of SEBS‐g‐MA rubber particles reduces the wear mass loss of PA 66, while the addition of organoclay nano‐layers increases the wear mass loss. The transfer films formed by neat PA 66 and PA 66/organoclay binary nanocomposite include a dark portion and bright portion. In the dark portion, the transfer film is thicker; in the bright portion, the steel ring surface is exposed. The transfer film formed by PA 66/SEBS‐g‐MA/organoclay ternary nanocomposite is thinner and more uniform than the transfer films formed by the other materials. CONCLUSION: When SEBS‐g‐MA rubber particles and organoclay nano‐layers are added simultaneously to PA 66, the wear resistance of PA 66 can be improved markedly. The main reason is that PA 66/SEBS‐g‐MA/organoclay ternary nanocomposite can form a thin and uniform transfer film on the steel ring surface. Copyright © 2008 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

A composite of short‐fiber, poly(m‐phenylene isophthalamide), and thermoplastic elastomer styrene (ethylene–butylene) styrene (SEBS), was investigated. The fiber surface was modified by N‐alkylation (heptylation and dodecylation) to improve their compatibility with a less polar SEBS matrix. Observation of fiber‐surface morphology by SEM revealed surface roughness after N‐alkylation. Nearly complete coating of the polymer matrix on the fiber was observed on a fractured surface of the composite, which is evidence for the improvement of fiber–matrix adhesion. It was found that the modulus of the composites grew with increasing fiber loading to approximately the same extent for both unmodified and modified fiber composites. Tensile strength of the modified fiber composites was found to improve significantly over that of the unmodified fiber composite. This suggests that the presence of the alkyl group on the fiber surface is responsible for an improvement of interfacial adhesion. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Poly(lactic acid)/organo‐montmorillonite (PLA/OMMT) nanocomposites toughened with maleated styrene‐ethylene/butylene‐styrene (SEBS‐g‐MAH) were prepared by melt‐compounding using co‐rotating twin‐screw extruder followed by injection molding. The dispersibility and intercalation/exfoliation of OMMT in PLA was characterized using X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The mechanical properties of the PLA nanocomposites was investigated by tensile and Izod impact tests. Thermogravimetric analyzer and differential scanning calorimeter were used to study the thermal behaviors of the nanocomposite. The homogenous dispersion of the OMMT silicate layers and SEBS‐g‐MAH encapsulated OMMT layered silicate can be observed from TEM. Impact strength and elongation at break of the PLA nanocomposites was enhanced significantly by the addition of SEBS‐g‐MAH. Thermal stability of the PLA/OMMT nanocomposites was improved in the presence of SEBS‐g‐MAH. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2012  相似文献

The effects of the addition of styrene‐ethylene/butylene‐styrene copolymer (SEBS) with various functionalized groups on the rheological, mechanical, and tribological properties on polyamide 6 nanocomposite filled with layered silicate (PA6/Clay) were investigated. Four types of SEBS: unmodified SEBS (SEBS), maleic anhydride grafted SEBS (SEBS‐g‐MA), amine group grafted SEBS (SEBS‐g‐NH2), and carboxyl group grafted SEBS (SEBS‐g‐COOH) were added with PA6/Clay nanocomposite to prepare various polymer blends. These polymer blends were extruded by a twin screw extruder and injection molded. Dynamic viscoelastic properties of these blends in the molten state and their tensile, impact, and tribological properties were evaluated. The viscoelastic properties were found to increase with the addition of SEBS and were highly influenced by the types of functionalized groups contained. Influence of the addition of SEBS on the mechanical properties of these systems differed for each mechanical property. Although the tensile properties decreased with SEBS, Izod impact properties improved with the addition of various functionalized SEBS. These mechanical properties and viscoelastic properties correlated closely with the size of dispersed SEBS particles and interparticle distance. The tribological properties also improved with the addition of SEBS, and the influence of the amount added was higher than the type of SEBS used. POLYM. ENG. ZrO2‐coated graphene oxide (GO)/SEBS(styrene‐ethylene‐butylene‐styrene)‐based nanocomposites were prepared for use as an electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding material. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) reveals almost every individual GO is fully and homogeneously covered with uniform ZrO2. X‐ray diffraction (XRD) patterns and Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) revealed increased ordering of ‐(CH2‐CH2)n segments in the poly(ethylene‐co‐1‐butene) block of the SEBS matrix in the case of SEBS/ZrO2‐coated graphene oxide composites than in the SEBS/pristine graphene oxide nanocomposite. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) proved better oxidation resistance of SEBS/ZrO2‐coated GO nanocomposite compared to that of SEBS/pristine GO nanocomposite. The present nanocomposites exhibited excellent EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) over X‐band (8.2 GHz–12.4 GHz) with EMI SE of 37.9 dB. J. VINYL ADDIT. Mechanical properties of isotactic polypropylene/wollastonite/styrene rubber block copolymers (iPP/wollastonite/SRBC) composites were studied as a function of elastomeric poly(styrene‐b‐ethylene‐co‐butylene‐b‐styrene) triblock copolymer (SEBS) and SEBS grafted with maleic anhydride (SEBS‐g‐MA) content from 0 to 20 vol%. Microphase morphology was stronger influenced by SRBC elastomers than by different wollastonite types. Higher encapsulation ability of SEBS‐g‐MA than SEBS caused more expressive core‐shell morphology and consequently higher notched impact strength as well as yield parameters, but lower Young's modulus. Higher ductility of the composites with SEBS than with SEBS‐g‐MA has been primarily caused by better miscibility of the polypropylene chains with SEBS molecules. Surface properties of components and adhesion parameters also indicated that adhesion at SEBS‐g‐MA/wollastonite interface, which was stronger than the one at the SEBS/wollastonite interface, influenced higher encapsulation of wollastonite particles by SEBS‐g‐MA. Styrene‐b‐(ethylene‐co‐butylene)‐b‐styrene (SEBS) and styrene‐b‐(ethylene‐co‐propylene) (SEP, SEPSEP) block copolymers with different styrene contents and different numbers of blocks in the copolymer chain were functionalized by melt radical grafting with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and employed as compatibilizers for PET‐based blends. Binary blends of PET with both functionalized (SEBS‐g‐GMA, SEP‐g‐GMA, SEPSEP‐g‐GMA) and neat (SEBS, SEP, SEPSEP) copolymers (75 : 25 w/w) and ternary blends of PET and PP (75 : 25 w/w) with various amounts (2.5–10 phr) of both modified and unmodified copolymers were prepared in an internal mixer, and their properties were evaluated by SEM, DSC, melt viscosimetry, and tensile and impact tests. The roles of the chemical structure, grafting degree, and concentration of the various copolymers on blend compatibilization was investigated. The blends with the grafted copolymers showed a neat improvement of phase dispersion and interfacial adhesion compared to the blends with nonfunctionalized copolymers. The addition of grafted copolymers resulted in a marked increase in melt viscosity, which was accounted for by the occurrence of chemical reactions between the epoxide groups of GMA and the carboxyl/hydroxyl end groups of PET during melt mixing. Blends with SEPSEP‐g‐GMA and SEBS‐g‐GMA, at concentrations of 5–10 phr, showed a higher compatibilizing effect with enhanced elongation at break and impact resistance. The effectiveness of GMA‐functionalized SEBS was then compared to that of maleic anhydride–grafted SEBS. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 98: 2201–2211, 2005  相似文献

Polymeric nanocomposites were synthesized from functionalized soybean‐oil‐based polymer matrix and montmorillonite (MMT) clay using an in situ free radical polymerization reaction. Acrylated epoxidized soybean oil combined with styrene was used as the monomer. Organophilic MMT (OrgMMT) was obtained using a quaternized derivative of methyl oleate, which was synthesized from olive oil triglyceride, as a renewable intercalant. The resultant nanocomposites were characterized using X‐ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy. The effect of increased nanofiller loading on the thermal and mechanical properties of the nanocomposites was investigated using thermogravimetric analysis and dynamic mechanical analysis. It was found that the desired exfoliated nanocomposite structure was achieved when the OrgMMT loading was 1 and 2 wt%, whereas a partially exfoliated or intercalated nanocomposite was obtained for 3 wt% loading. All the nanocomposites were found to have improved thermal and mechanical properties as compared with virgin acrylated epoxidized soybean‐oil‐based polymer matrix. The nanocomposite containing 2 wt% OrgMMT clay was found to have the highest thermal stability and best dynamic mechanical performance. Copyright © 2010 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Tensile behavior and impact strength of poly(butylene terephthlate) (PBT)/styrene‐ethylene‐butylene‐styrene (SEBS) copolymer blends were studied at SEBS volume fraction 0–0.38. Tensile modulus and strength decreased, whereas breaking elongation increased with SEBS content. Predictive models are used to evaluate the tensile properties. Strength properties were dependent on the crystallinity of PBT and phase adhesion. The normalized notched Izod impact strength increased with the SEBS content; at Φd = 0.38, the impact strength enhanced to five times that of PBT. Scanning electron microscopy was used to examine phase morphology. Concentration and interparticle distance of the dispersed phase influenced impact toughening. In the presence of maleic anhydride‐grafted SEBS (SEBS‐g‐MAH), the tensile modulus and strength decreased significantly, while normalized relative notched Izod impact strength enhanced to 7.5 times because of enhanced interphase adhesion. This paper reports a simple route for the preparation of graphene/poly(styrene‐b‐butadiene‐b‐styrene) (SBS) nanocomposite films employing a vacuum filtration method. Graphene is exfoliated well by an electrochemical procedure and homogeneously dispersed in the polymer matrix. The prepared nanocomposite films were characterized by XRD, Fourier transform IR (FTIR) spectroscopy, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, AFM and SEM. Morphological studies showed that graphene formed a smooth coating over the surface of SBS. The increase in graphene concentration induces the wrinkling of graphene sheets at the composite surface which causes a further increase in surface roughness. The FTIR, Raman and XPS spectra of graphene/SBS nanocomposite films indicate the strong interactions between graphene and the polymer matrix. According to the XRD patterns, introducing SBS into graphene did not modify the graphene structure additionally, i.e. the crystal lattice parameters do not depend on SBS content in graphene/SBS nanocomposite films. The graphene/SBS nanocomposite films also exhibited better hydrophobicity due to the increased surface roughness and lower sheet resistivity (reduced 10 times) compared to exfoliated graphene. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

This study describes the preparation of polystyrene–clay nanocomposite (PS‐nanocomposite) colloidal particles via free‐radical polymerization in dispersion. Montmorillonite clay (MMT) was pre‐modified using different concentrations of cationic styrene oligomeric (‘PS‐cationic’), and the subsequent modified PS‐MMT was used as stabilizer in the dispersion polymerization of styrene. The main objective of this study was to use the clay platelets as fillers to improve the thermal and mechanical properties of the final PS‐nanocomposites and as steric stabilizers in dispersion polymerization after modification with PS‐cationic. The correlation between the degree of clay modification and the morphology of the colloidal PS particles was investigated. The clay platelets were found to be encapsulated inside PS latex only when the clay surface was rendered highly hydrophobic, and stable polymer latex was obtained. The morphology of PS‐nanocomposite material (after film formation) was found to range from partially exfoliated to intercalated structure depending on the percentage of PS‐MMT loading. The impact of the modified clay loading on the monomer conversion, the polymer molecular weight, the thermal stability and the thermomechanical properties of the final PS‐nanocomposites was determined. The effect of poly[styrene‐b‐(ethylene‐co‐butylene)‐b‐styrene] (SEBS) copolymer on the thermal and dielectric properties of polypropylene (PP)—nanosilica (NS) composites in relation with morphological aspects revealed by atomic force microscopy (AFM) was investigated in this article. SEBS hindered the crystallization process of PP in PP/NS composites, leading to a smaller degree of crystallinity and lower perfection of crystalline structure. Broader lamellar thickness distribution was obtained in nanocomposites containing SEBS. Almost two times higher dielectric loss as compared to PP reference and two relaxation processes were detected in εr ′′(f) curves of nanocomposites. The first peak, in the same frequency domain as for the references, was assigned to α‐relaxation of polymer components together with interfacial polarization. The relaxation time follows the Arrhenius law with an activation energy of 80–90 kJ/mol. For the second process, the temperature dependence of the relaxation times obeyed the VFT equation. The dielectric changes following the incorporation of SEBS support its tendency to hinder the motional processes in PP, in accordance with DSC results. A smooth transition from a phase rich in SEBS to one containing mainly PP was detected in the AFM image of the composite with the larger amount of SEBS, emphasizing the good compatibility at the PP/SEBS interface. Eighty/twenty polypropylene (PP)/styrene–ethylene–butylene–styrene (SEBS) and 80/20 PP/maleated styrene–ethylene–butylene–styrene (SEBS‐g‐MA) blends reinforced with 30 wt % short glass fibers (SGFs) were prepared by extrusion and subsequent injection molding. The influence of the maleic anhydride (MA) functional group grafted to SEBS on the properties of SGF/SEBS/PP hybrid composites was studied. Tensile and impact tests showed that the SEBS‐g‐MA copolymer improved the yield strength and impact toughness of the hybrid composites. Extensive plastic deformation occurred at the matrix interface layer next to the fibers of the SGF/SEBS‐g‐MA/PP composites during impact testing. This was attributed to the MA functional group, which enhanced the adhesion between SEBS and SGF. Differential scanning calorimetry measurements indicated that SEBS promoted the crystallization of PP spherulites by acting as active nucleation sites. However, the MA functional group grafted to SEBS retarded the crystallization of PP. Finally, polarized optical microscopy observations confirmed the absence of transcrystallinity at the glass‐fiber surfaces of both SGF/SEBS/PP and SGF/SEBS‐g‐MA/PP hybrid composites. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
