The crystalline morphology formed in binary blends of poly(ε-caprolactone)- block-polyethylene (PCL-b-PE) copolymers and PCL homopolymers has been examined using synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering (SR-SAXS) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) as a function of the homopolymer fraction in the blend. The PE block crystallized first on quenching from a lamellar microdomain structure to set a hard lamellar morphology (PE lamellar morphology) in the blend, followed by the crystallization of PCL chains (i.e., PCL homopolymers + PCL blocks). Two binary blends were studied by considering the miscible state of PCL homopolymers in the microdomain structure: when the PCL homopolymers were uniformly mixed with PCL blocks, they formed a mixed crystal. When the PCL homopolymers were localized between PCL blocks in the microdomain structure, DSC results suggested the possible formation of separate PCL crystals in the PE lamellar morphology. The effect of the advance crystallization of PE blocks on the subsequent crystallization of PCL chains was discussed as compared with the crystalline morphology formed in PCL-block-polybutadiene copolymer/PCL homopolymer blends, where the crystallization of PCL chains started directly from a microdomain structure without forming the hard lamellar morphology.  相似文献

The crystallization and melting behavior of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) and polypropylene copolymer (co‐PP) containing silicon dioxide (SiO2) were investigated by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). SiO2 had a heterogenous nucleating effect on iPP, leading to a moderate increase in the crystallization temperature and a decrease in the half crystallization time. However, SiO2 decreased the crystallization temperature and prolonged the half crystallization time of co‐PP. A modified Avrami theory was successfully used to well describe the early stages of nonisothermal crystallization of iPP, co‐PP, and their composites. SiO2 exhibited high nucleation activity for iPP, but showed little nucleation activity for co‐PP and even restrained nucleation. The iPP/SiO2 composite had higher activation energy of crystal growth than iPP, indicating the difficulty of crystal growth of the composite. The co‐PP/SiO2 composite had lower activation energy than co‐PP, indicating the ease of crystal growth of the composite. Crystallization rates of iPP, co‐PP, and their composites depended on the nucleation. Because of its high rate of nucleation, the iPP/SiO2 composite had higher crystallization rate than iPP. Because of its low rate of nucleation, the co‐PP/SiO2 composite had lower crystallization rate than co‐PP. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 100: 1889–1898, 2006  相似文献

The correlation between crystalline morphology development and tensile properties of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) and its blend with poly(ethylene-co-octene) (PEOc) was investigated to study the ductile-brittle transition (DBT) in fracture modes. The sample processing strategy and the scientific observations have never been reported previously. The samples were first isothermally crystallized at 130 °C, 123 °C or 115 °C for a wide range of crystallization times, and then quenched to 35 °C for characterization. It was found that the crystallization conditions including crystallization temperature and time governed the crystalline morphology and even the tensile properties of iPP and the iPP/PEOc (80/20) blend. The lower the crystallization temperature, the shorter the crystallization time was needed for the occurrence of DBT, and the sharper the transition would be. The addition of the elastomer component delayed the DBT occurrence for the iPP/PEOc blend in terms of the crystallization time, owing to the fact that the existence of PEOc domains between the iPP lamellar stack regions or at the iPP spherulitic boundaries enhanced the ductility of the blend. The X-ray diffraction results displayed the oriented and destroyed crystalline structure characterizing the ductile fracture, while unoriented structure describing the brittle failure. The DBT is closely related to the crystal perfection, and factors such as the crystallization temperature and time and the compositions have been proven to be significant variables in determining the DBT occurrence.  相似文献

Optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and small angle X‐ray scattering techniques were used to study the influence of the crystallization conditions on morphology and thermal behavior of samples of binary blends constituted of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) and a novel graft copolymer of unsaturated propylene with styrene (uPP‐g‐PS) isothermally crystallized from melt, at relatively low undercooling, in a range of crystallization temperatures of the iPP phase. It was shown that, irrespective of composition, no fall in the crystallinity index of the iPP phase was observed. Notwithstanding, spherulitic texture and thermal behavior of the iPP phase in the iPP/uPP‐g‐PS materials were strongly modified by the presence of copolymer. Surprisingly, iPP spherulites crystallized from the blends showed size and regularity higher than that exhibited by plain iPP spherulites. Moreover, the amount of amorphous material located in the interspherulitic amorphous regions decreased with increasing crystallization temperature, and for a given crystallization temperature, with increasing uPP‐g‐PS content. Also, relevant thermodynamic parameters, related to the crystallization process of the iPP phase from iPP/uPP‐g‐PS melts, were found, composition dependent. The equilibrium melting temperature and the surface free energy of folding of the iPP lamellar crystals grown in the presence of uPP‐g‐PS content up to 5% (wt/wt) were, in fact, respectively slightly lower and higher than that found for the lamellar crystals of plain iPP. By further increase of the copolymer content, both the equilibrium melting temperature and surface free energy of folding values were, on the contrary, depressed dramatically. The obtained results were accounted for by assuming that the iPP crystallization process from iPP/uPP‐g‐PS melts could occur through molecular fractionation inducing a combination of morphological and thermodynamic effects. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. In this work, the melt crystallization of immiscible blends of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) and branched polyethylenes (PE) was followed by oscillatory shear measurements during controlled cooling. All the blends contained 20% iPP finely dispersed in several ethylene/α-olefin copolymer matrices (with and without a nucleating agent) with densities ranging from 0.88 to 0.92 g/cm3 (linear low, very low, and ultra low density polyethylenes: LLDPE, VLDPE, and ULDPE). The rheological results were compared with parallel differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements at the same cooling rate. During preliminary evaluations of the neat resins, no effect was found of the variation of the frequency of oscillation or the applied shear strain on their crystallization (at least in the range explored in this work). In the case of the blends, when the iPP crystallized in a fractionated fashion, only one sudden increase in the storage modulus (G′) was observed during cooling due to the partial coincident crystallization of both iPP and the PE matrix. In the presence of a nucleating agent, an almost complete separation between the crystallization of both components in the blend was achieved and two increases in G′ were clearly observed upon cooling. A close match between the dynamic crystallization kinetics obtained by DSC and torsion rheometry was demonstrated by a direct comparison between calorimetrically measured solid conversion and G′ during cooling from the melt. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The effect of propylene–ethylene copolymers (PEc) with different ethylene‐unit contents on melting and crystallization behaviors of isotactic‐polypropylene (iPP) were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized light microscopy (PLM). The results show that the addition of PEc decreases significantly crystallization temperature (Tc) of iPP, but slightly affects melting temperature (Tm). With increasing the ethylene‐unit content of the propylene–ethylene copolymers, the decrease in crystallization temperature of iPP is smaller. The PLM results show that the spherulite growth rate decreases with increasing crystallization temperature for iPP and iPP/PEc blends. The higher the ethylene‐unit content of the copolymers is, the lower the spherulite growth rate (G) of iPP/PEc blends is. The influence of the PEc on nucleation rate constant (Kg) and fold surface energy (σe) of iPP was examined by nucleation theory of Hoffman and Lauritzen. The results show that both Kg and σe of iPP/PE20(80/20) and iPP/PE23(80/20) blends are higher than those of iPP, demonstrating that the overall crystallization rate of iPP/PEc blends decreased as compared to that of iPP, resulting from the decrease of the nucleation rate and the spherulite growth rate of iPP. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The influence of a nucleating agent on the crystallization behaviour of isotactic polypropylene (iPP), in their blends with poly(styrene-b-ethylene butylene-b-styrene) (SEBS), and a metallocenic ethylene-octene copolymer (EO) was investigated by DSC, optical microscopy and real-time small and wide angle X-ray scattering (SAXS and WAXS) experiments using synchrotron radiation. In non-nucleated iPP/SEBS blends, the crystallization of the iPP matrix occurred in the presence of the styrenic domains which induced a nucleating effect on the process, as observed in the synchrotron experiments. The metallocenic elastomer did not affect the crystallization behaviour of iPP in the iPP/EO blends in non-isothermal experiments, however, the development of crystallinity in the elastomer was restricted. In the nucleated isotactic polypropylene/elastomer blends a significant increase in the crystallinity and the crystallization rate of the iPP matrix was observed due to the presence of the nucleating agent. However, the nucleating efficiency of the additive was strongly affected by the nature and content of the elastomeric component. The nucleating agent efficiency was higher in the presence of the ethylene-octene component than the styrenic elastomer.  相似文献

Blends of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) with the polyamide nylon-6 (N6), prepared by extrusion, were studied with a composition of up to 30% by weight polyamide. In the case of a 70/30 iPP/N6 blend, the influence of a compatibilizing agent based on polypropylene functionalized with maleic anhydride (PP-g-MA), with compositions of 1, 3, 5, and 10% by weight in polypropylene, was followed. The influence of the concentration of N6 and the compatibilizing agent on the rheological and thermal properties, and the morphology of the blends, was analyzed by monitoring the melt viscosity at different shear rates, differential scanning calorimetry, and polarized light microscopy. Vibrational spectroscopy was used to characterize the blends and to study the effect of the compatibilizing agent. The viscosity—composition curves for the iPP/N6 blends, in the composition and shear rate ranges analyzed, show a negative deviation from the additive rule, while the opposite trend is observed for the blends compatibilized with PP-g-MA. Important variations in the spectroscopic behavior was observed between compatibilized and noncompatibilized blends, which varied as a function of the compatibilizing agent concentration. The crystallization rates of iPP in the iPP/N6 blends, under both dynamic and isothermal conditions, are much greater than are those observed for pure iPP and are directly related to the nucleating activity of the polyamide. This effect is much smaller in the presence of the compatibilizing agent. The isothermal crystallization of the polyamide N6 in compatibilized blends is affected by the presence of iPP, reducing the crystallization rate due to the diluent effect of the polypropylene. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The thermal properties and morphology development of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) homopolymer and blended with low molecules weigh atactic polypropylene (aPP) at different isothermal crystallization temperature were studied with differential scanning calorimeter and wide-angle X-ray scattering. The results of DSC show that aPP is local miscible with iPP in the amorphous region and presented a phase transition temperature at Tc=120 °C. However, below this transition temperature, imperfect α-form crystal were obtained and leading to two endotherms. While, above this transition temperature, more perfect α- and γ-form crystals were formed which only a single endotherm was observed. In addition, the results of WAXD indicate that the contents of the γ-form of iPP remarkably depend both on the aPP content and isothermal crystallization temperature. Pure iPP crystallized was characterized by the appearance of α- and γ-forms coexisting. Moreover, the highest intensity of second peak, i.e. the (0 0 8) of γ-form coexisting with (0 4 0) of α-form, and crystallinity were obtained for blended with 20% of aPP, the γ-form content almost disappeared for iPP/aPP blended with 50% aPP content. Therefore, detailed analysis of the WAXD patterns indicates that at small amount aPP lead to increasing the crystallinity of iPP blend, at larger amount aPP, while decreases crystallinity of iPP blends with increasing aPP content. On the other hand, the normalized crystallinity of iPP molecules increases with increasing aPP content. These results describe that the diluent aPP molecular promotes growth rate of iPP because the diluent aPP molecular increases the mobility of iPP and reduces the entanglement between iPP molecules during crystallization.  相似文献

A new toughening agent, polypropylene/poly(ethylene-co-propylene) in-reactor alloy (EP-P), has been adopted to modify isotactic polypropylene (PP) in present study. Systematic investigation has been performed on the inter-compositional interaction, crystalline structure, and phase morphology of a series of PP/EP-P blends. It has been found that the PP component from EP-P is thoroughly miscible with neat PP and they together serve as the matrix of the PP/EP-P blends, while the ethylene-propylene random copolymers (EPR) act as the dispersed phase. The ethylene-propylene segmented copolymers (EPS), behaving as the compatibilizer between the EPR dispersed phase and PP matrix, strengthen mutual incorporation and effective diffusion of the amorphous PP segments and the EPR molecules. Based on the in-depth understanding of the crystalline structure and phase morphology, the correlation between morphological structure and mechanical properties has been established. The excellent impact toughness of PP/EP-P blends with higher EP-P content is mainly attributed to the small PP crystallites scattered in the blends and the well dispersed EP copolymer domains in PP matrix.  相似文献

The aim of this work was the synthesis of new graft copolymers consisting of polypropylene (PP) backbones and liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) branches, to be used as compatibilizing agents for PP/LCP blends. The PP-g-LCP copolymers have been prepared by polycondensation of the monomers of a semiflexible liquid crystalline polyester (SBH 1 : 1 : 2), that is, sebacic acid (S), 4,4′-dihydroxybiphenyl (B), and 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (H) in the mole ratio of 1 : 1 : 2, carried out in the presence of appropriate amounts of a commercial acrylic-acid-functionalized polypropylene (PPAA). The polycondensation products, referred to as COPP50 and COPP70, having a calculated PPAA concentration of 50 and 70 wt %, respectively, have been fractionated with boiling toluene and xylene, and the soluble and insoluble fractions have been characterized by Fourier transform infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry, and X-ray diffraction. All analytical characterizations have concordantly shown that the products are formed by intricate mixtures of unreacted PPAA and SBH together with PP-g-SBH copolymers of different composition. Exploratory experiments carried out by adding small amounts of COPP50 or COPP70 into binary mixtures of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) and SBH while blending have demonstrated that this practice leads to an appreciable improvement of the dispersion of the minor LCP phase, as well as to an increase of the crystallization rate of iPP. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The multiple melting behavior of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) (P(HB-co-HHx)) (HHx = 12 mol%) isothermally crystallized from the melt state has been characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The influence of different experimental variables (such as crystallization temperature, time, and heating rate) on the multiple melting behavior of P(HB-co-HHx) was investigated by using DSC. Moreover, it has been further examined by monitoring intensity changes of the characteristic IR bands during the subsequent heating process. For the isothermally crystallized P(HB-co-HHx) samples, triple melting peaks were observed upon heating. The weak lowest-temperature DSC endotherm I always appears at the position just above the crystallization temperature, and shifts to a higher temperature linearly with the logarithm of the crystallization time. The combination of DSC and IR results suggested that the occurrence of peak I was a result of the melting of crystals formed upon long-time annealing. As for the other two main melting endothermic peaks, endotherm II corresponds to the melting of crystals formed during the primary crystallization, and endotherm III is ascribed to the melting peak of the crystals formed by recrystallization during the heating process.  相似文献

A series of polypropylene-g-poly(ethylene-co-1-butene) graft copolymers (PP-g-EBR) with well-defined long chain branched (LCB) molecular structures, basing on the same PP–BT precursor (PP–BT2), were used to study effects of EBR LCBs on the crystallization and foaming behaviors of PP-g-EBRs. The kinetics results of isothermal and nonisothermal crystallization verify the opposite effects of LCB structure on the crystallization process of PP backbones in PP-g-EBRs: on one hand, the indolent LCB structure can perform the function of heterogeneous nucleation to facilitate the crystallization; on the other hand, the mobility and reptation ability of PP backbones are restrained by the LCB structure, which hinders the crystallization process. Additionally, the fluctuation-assisted nucleation mechanism caused by microphase separation between the EBR rich phase and the PP rich phase may account, to some extent, for the heterogeneous nucleation effect. The PP–BT2 and PP-g-EBRs were foamed by a batch method under the same conditions, using supercritical CO2 as blowing agent. The resulting PP-g-EBR foams exhibited closed cell structure and increased cell density compared to the PP–BT2 foam, attributing to the enhanced melt strength. The cell density of PP-g-EBR foam increased first and decreased then with the LCB level increasing. The influence of LCB level on cell size was somewhat complex. Increasing LCB level, which promoted melt strength and strain hardening behavior of PP-g-EBRs, decreased the cell size and narrowed the cell size distribution. However, large cells were observed in PP-g-EBR foams with relatively high LCB level, which could be ascribed to the larger growing space introduced by the higher content of amorphous EBR LCBs. Moreover, the melting behaviors of PP–BT2 and PP-g-EBRs before and after foaming treatment were compared.  相似文献

A novel strategy for compatibilization of ternary polymer blends was described. PP (polyolefins)/PA6 (engineering plastics)/PS (styrene polymers) was selected as a model ternary blend system, and the compatibilization effect was investigated by means of SEM, rheometer, dynamic mechanical thermal analysis and mechanical testing. The results indicated that, as a ternary polymer blend compatibilizer, styrene and maleic anhydride dual monomers melt grafted polypropylene [PP-g-(MAH-co-St)] showed more effective compatibilization in the PP/PA6/PS ternary blend system than PP-g-MAH, PP-g-St and their mixture. The good compatibilizing effect of PP-g-(MAH-co-St) can be explained by two mechanisms. One is the in situ formation of [PP-g-(MAH-co-St)]-g-PA6 copolymer at the PP/PA6 interface, and the other is that it also contains styrene blocks, resulting in chemical affinity with PS and PP homopolymers.  相似文献

Epitaxial growth of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) onto lamellae of isotactic polypropylene (iPP), with HDPE chains inclined about 50° to that of iPP, has been achieved for the first time in their blends via dynamic packing injection molding. Even more, the epitaxial growth was found to be dependent on composition of the blends. The sequence of crystallization is not the dominant factor, but the fact that iPP crystallizes before HDPE is prerequisite for epitaxial growth of PE. Various lamellar orientations with composition can be explained by the competition between bulk crystallization and epitaxy at interfaces (i.e. iPP lamellae). In 20PP (20 wt% iPP by weight in blends), HDPE can readily crystallize in the bulk as a result of shear, and no epitaxial growth of PE is observed. For 80PP, however, bulk crystallization of HDPE can be depressed due to lack of nuclei in its bulk, resulting from a much finer droplets dispersed in the iPP matrix, and then epitaxial growth prevails.  相似文献

The crystallization morphologies and mechanical behaviors of iPP/sPP blends and the corresponding fibers were investigated in the present work. For all the investigated iPP/sPP blends, the starting crystallization temperature of sPP during cooling process was significantly increased with increasing iPP content. The iPP/sPP blends are strongly immiscible at the conventional melt processing temperatures, in consistence with the literature results. As isothermally crystallized at 130 °C, sPP still keeps melt state, while iPP component is able to crystallize and the spherulites become imperfect accompanied by decreasing of the crystallite size as sPP content increases. The addition of sPP decreases the crystallinity of iPP/sPP blends and fibers. The storage modulus, E′, of the iPP/sPP blends is higher than that of sPP homopolymer in the temperature range from −90 to 100 °C. The iPP/sPP fibers can be prepared favorably by melt-spinning. As sPP content exceeds 70%, the elastic recovery of the iPP/sPP fibers is approximately equal to that of sPP homopolymer fiber. The drawability of the as-spun fiber of iPP/sPP (50/50) is better than that of sPP fiber, which improves the fiber processing performance and enhances the mechanical properties of the final product. The drawn fiber of sPP presents good elastic behavior within the range of 50% deformation, whereas the elastic property of the iPP/sPP (50/50) fiber slightly decreases, but still much better than that of iPP fiber.  相似文献

The melting behavior of PP/EVA and PP-EP/EVA blends non-isothermally crystallized was studied. The morphology of blends was evaluated in terms of crystal habits, spherulitic structure and melting characteristics. For PP and EVA homopolymers the observed crystal habits were f-monoclinic and orthorhombic corresponding to PP and PE cyrstals since this last is a part of the EVA copolymer. Two types of f-crystals were associated to the experimental data and they were designated as low (LPf-C) and high (HPf-C) perfection f-crystals. These crystals were relatively unaffected in nature after blending the PP or the PP-EP with the EVA copolymer. Nevertheless, crystallinity decreased and the spherulitic structure changed. In differential scanning calorimetry [DSC] heating traces two partially overlapped endothermic signals were observed during heating of the non-isothermally crystallized specimen. The low temperature endotherm (I) was associated to melting of LPf-C structures while the high temperature endotherm (II) was related to two different melting processes, one corresponding to HPf-C structures and the other to recrystallized or reorganized material. The shifting of endotherm I to lower temperatures was considered an effect of interfacial interactions in the crystalline zones between the LPf-C of PP and the orthorhombic crystals of EVA. Modulated differential scanning calorimetry [MDSC] traces corroborated that recrystallization is higher in PP/EVA blends the opposite being the case in PP-EP/EVA blends. Differences in the multiple melting between PP/EVA and PP-EP/EVA blends are discussed in terms of molecular interactions.  相似文献

Issues in blends of polymers of the same chemical repeat unit but with different tacticities were addressed by investigating on the phase behavior and interaction strength of binary blends of three polypropylenes of different tacticities, i.e., isotactic polypropylene (iPP), syndiotactic polypropylene (sPP), and atactic polypropylene (aPP) using polarized optical microscopy (POM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Although blends of polypropylenes have been widely studied in the past, there are still on-going debates on true phase behavior (miscibility vs. upper critical solution temperature (UCST) or immiscibility). Except for several earlier theoretical predictions based on the Flory-Huggins mean field theories, UCST behavior had not been experimentally proven for blends of sPP/iPP or aPP/sPP, owing to interference from PP crystallinity. In addition, interaction strength of the blends of different tactic polypropylenes is yet to be established. Using the method of equilibrium melting points, the Flory-Huggins interaction parameter of the aPP/iPP blend was shown to possess a significantly negative value (χ12 = −0.21), which proves that the blend is indeed miscible in the melted amorphous as well as semicrystalline states as previously reported in the literature. However, the interaction parameters for the sPP/iPP and aPP/sPP blends were found to be nearly zero (χ12 = −0.02 and −0.0071, respectively, at T = 150-180 °C), indicating that the interactions in two blends are weak and that the corresponding phase behavior for them borders on immiscibility at ambient temperature. This study also utilized novel approaches in constructing UCST phase diagrams by separating the amorphous phase domains from the crystalline spherulites, yielding data plausible for experimentally determining the UCST in iPP/sPP blend vs. aPP/sPP blend.  相似文献

The kinetics of the isothermal crystallization process from the melt of pure poly(butylene succinate)‐co‐(butylene carbonate) (PBS‐co‐BC) and its blends with cellulose acetate butylate (CAB) (10–30 wt%) was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and the well‐known Avrami equation. In the blends, the overall crystallization rate of PBS‐co‐BC became slower with increasing CAB content. The equilibrium melting temperature ( ) of PBS‐co‐BC decreased with increasing CAB content, which was similar to that with other miscible crystalline/amorphous polymer blends. The slower crystallization kinetics of PBS‐co‐BC in the blends was explicable in terms of a diluent effect of the CAB component. By application of Turnbull–Fisher kinetic theory for polymer–diluent blend systems, the surface free energy (σe) of pure PBS‐co‐BC and of the blends was obtained, indicating that the blend with CAB resulted in a decrease in the surface free energy of folding of PBS‐co‐BC lamellar crystals. Several blends of isotactic polypropylene, iPP, and the liquid crystalline polymer poly(triethylene glycol p,p′-bibenzoate), PTEB, have been prepared with different compositions, and analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, polarizing optical microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction with synchrotron radiation, and thermal methods (thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry). The results show a good adhesion matrix-dispersed phase when a maleic anhydride-grafted PP is used as compatibilizer, MA-g-PP. The calorimetric and synchrotron experiments indicate higher crystallization temperatures for the iPP component in the blends when compared with those of pure iPP. The higher crystallization temperature seems to be associated with a crystallinity increase. Optical microscopy results point out the nucleating effects of both PTEB and MA-g-PP on the iPP spherulites. The synchrotron experiments reveal that, on cooling from the isotropic melt, a SmA mesophase is formed first from the PTEB component, followed by its transformation into a tilted SmC mesophase. The isotropic-SmA transition is clearly affected in the blends with higher contents in iPP.  相似文献
