Customized television: standards compliant advanced digital television

This paper describes a European Union supported collaborative project called CustomTV based on the premise that future TV sets will provide all sorts of multimedia information and interactivity, as well as manage all such services according to each user's or group of user's preferences/profiles. We have demonstrated the potential of recent standards (MPEG-4 and MPEG-7) to implement such a scenario by building the following services: an advanced EPG, weather forecasting, and stock exchange/flight information.     

Cluster-based location service schemes in VANETs: current state,challenges and future directions

Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs) have drawn incredible interest in both academic and industrial sectors due to their potential applications and services. Vehicles’ position plays a significant role in many location-based applications and services such as public emergency, vehicles tracking, resource discovery, traffic monitoring and position-based routing. A location service is used to keep up-to-date records of current positions of vehicles. However, locating vehicles’ positions and maintaining an accurate view of the entire network are quite challenging tasks due to the high number of nodes, and high and fast nodes mobility which results in rapid topological changes and sudden network disconnections. In the past literature, various location-based services have been proposed to solve the above mentioned issues. Moreover, the cluster-based location service schemes have gained a growing interest due to their advantages over non-cluster-based schemes. The cluster-based schemes improve the network scalability, reduce the communications overhead and resolve the mobility issues within the clusters preventing them from propagating in the whole network. Therefore, this paper presents the taxonomy of the existing location service schemes, inspects the cluster-based location service by highlighting their strengths and limitations, and provides a comparison between location-based clustering and application specific clustering such as the one used in routing, information dissemination, channel access management and security. In addition, the existing clustering schemes, challenges and future directions for efficient cluster-based location service are also discussed.

     

Resilient network design: challenges and future directions

This paper highlights the complexity and challenges of providing reliable services in the evolving communications infrastructure. The hurdles in providing end-to-end availability guarantees are discussed and research problems identified. Avenues for overcoming some of the challenges examined are presented. This includes the use of a highly available network spine embedded in a physical network together with efficient crosslayer mapping to offer survivability and differentiation of traffic into classes of resilience.     

Predicting the unpredictable: future directions in internetworkingand their implications

The author explores the likely networking technologies to mature over the next decade, and the implications on other fields of information systems and society. He has chosen to restrict himself to the decade timescale since predicting beyond that time frame is likely to be writing science fiction. This article addresses two major themes. The first explores at the 10,000-foot level the major technology changes one expects to bear fruit over the next decade; the second explores the implications of these changes on our society. Since the time the talk on which this article is based was given, the world has changed. The need for security and robustness of our electronic infrastructure has dramatically increased, and our understanding of how to do this unfortunately has not kept up with the need. In many countries, there is an increasing strain between the privacy desires of citizens and the desire for safety. In many industries, such as music and motion pictures, the rapid expansion of digital content and the ease of distribution of that content has created demands for increased protection, much of which must be implemented in computer hardware and networking protocols. How this will impact the perceived right of the public to fair use of that material is a battle being fought in the legislature and the courts. Wireless ATM networks: technology status and future directions

The concept of “wireless ATM” (WATM), first proposed in 1992, is now being actively considered as a potential framework for new-generation wireless communication networks capable of supporting integrated, quality-of service (QoS) based multimedia services. In this review paper, we outline the technological rationale for wireless ATM, present a system-level architecture, and discuss key design issues for both mobile ATM switching infrastructure and radio access subsystems. The WATM radio access layer issues covered in this paper include: spectrum allocation; spectrum etiquette; modem technology; and medium access/data link control (MAC/DLC) protocols. Mobile ATM aspects such as ATM signaling extensions for handoff control, location management, and mobile QoS control are discussed. A summary of current wireless/mobile ATM technology development and standardization status is given, including an outline of our WATMnet prototype. The paper concludes with a discussion of future directions for wireless ATM technology such as Internet protocol (IP) integration and mobile multimedia terminals/applications     

智能物联网AIoT研究综述

智能物联网（artificial intelligence of things,AIoT）是人工智能与物联网技术相融合的产物,这一新兴概念在智慧城市、智能家居、智慧制造、无人驾驶等领域得到了广泛应用。然而AIoT相关技术研究仍处于初级阶段, 存在大量问题和挑战。首先简述了AIoT技术产生的背景,明晰其定义和应用场景。以此为契机,构建了一个新型的面向智能信息处理的云边端融合AIoT架构。在给出AIoT研究体系的基础上, 详细探讨并比较了其各组成技术模块,包括AI融合IoT数据采集、复杂事件处理及协同、云边端融合研究、AI融合IoT安全及隐私保护和AI融合应用服务等方面的研究现状和解决方案。最后, 论述了AIoT未来的研究方向和发展趋势。     

CATV in France: Present situation and future directions

Fibre-optic systems have been introduced in France initially in the subscriber loop (fibre to the home) for experimenting switched broadband services (Biarritz opened in 1984) and then, under the Plan Cǎble for CATV/multiservice networks (twelve cities or groups of cities, about 900,000 homes), and as CATV trunks and feeders in 40 other cities or groups of cities (another 4,500,000 homes). This unique experience with fibre in the subscriber loop, albeit slightly premature gives some assurance on the future economic feasibility of the fibre-to-the-home or fibre-to-the-office concepts under development. D2-MAC/packet with smart card access control has been selected as the standard for scrambling/enciphering audiovisual signals on cable and on satellite. The integration of the recent hybrid or fibre broadband TV networks and of their network management systems into the telecommunication networks is still being discussed.     

高级数字电视广播系统传输方案

作为高清晰度电视总体组在数字电视传输技术研究方面的组成部分，介绍一种由浙江大学、上海交通大学和西安电子科技大学共同提出并开发的高级数字电视广播系统（Advanced Digital Television Broadcasting System,ADTB)的传输方案。该方案在功能和性能上超越现有的国外数字电视标准，能够在使用民用级调谐器的前提下，实现大容量广播数据的稳定的无线固定、便携和移动接收，支持单频网络和同频道转发，包含高效的数字有线广播传输模式，易于兼容国外标准。这是我国数字电视广播标准理想的侯选方案之一。     

发展5G的分析与建议

首先简要介绍了5G在全球的研究进展,分析了5G的需求与挑战.分享了关于5G的几点再认识,指出5G是万物互联、连接场景的一代,电信IT化、软件定义、云化的一代,蜂窝结构变革的一代,承前启后和探索的一代.然后分析了5G无线传输和网络的关键技术,简要介绍了笔者团队提出的PDMA、UUDN和虚拟RAT等技术.特别指出了TDD在5G中的应用优势,并预测5G新空口将采用TDD模式.最后结合我国在TD-SCDMA和TD-LTE方面的创新经验,提出了关于我国实现“5G引领”的建议.     

Fixed broadband wireless access: state of the art, challenges, andfuture directions

This article provides an overview of fixed broadband wireless access technology. Focusing on the band below 3 GHz, we describe BWA service and carrier needs, deployment scenarios, architectural requirements, physical layer, medium access control, and radio link protocol requirements. We characterize fixed BWA channels, outline the major challenges of fixed BWA, and study requirements for future BWA systems. Finally, we show that the use of multiple antennas at both ends of a fixed wireless link provides significant leverages     

Parasitic extraction: current state of the art and future trends

With the increase in circuit performance (higher speeds) and density (smaller feature size) in deep submicrometer (DSM) designs, interconnect parasitic effects are increasingly becoming more important. This paper first surveys the state of the art in parasitic extraction for resistance, capacitance, and inductance. The paper then covers other related issues such as interconnect modeling, model order reduction, delay calculation, and signal integrity issues such as crosstalk. Some future trends on parasitic extraction, model reduction and interconnect modeling are discussed and a fairly complete list of references is given
