For several applications, it is important to be able to compute the treewidth of a given graph and to find tree decompositions of small width reasonably fast. Good lower bounds on the treewidth of a graph can, amongst others, help to speed up branch and bound algorithms that compute the treewidth of a graph exactly. A high lower bound for a specific graph instance can tell that a dynamic programming approach for solving a problem is infeasible for this instance. This paper gives an overview of several recent methods that give lower bounds on the treewidth of graphs.  相似文献

In this paper a parallel algorithm is given that, given a graph G=(V,E) , decides whether G is a series parallel graph, and, if so, builds a decomposition tree for G of series and parallel composition rules. The algorithm uses O(log \kern -1pt |E|log ^\ast \kern -1pt |E|) time and O(|E|) operations on an EREW PRAM, and O(log \kern -1pt |E|) time and O(|E|) operations on a CRCW PRAM. The results hold for undirected as well as for directed graphs. Algorithms with the same resource bounds are described for the recognition of graphs of treewidth two, and for constructing tree decompositions of treewidth two. Hence efficient parallel algorithms can be found for a large number of graph problems on series parallel graphs and graphs with treewidth two. This paper presents algorithms whose input is an undirected graph, and whose output is a tree decomposition of width that approximates the optimal, the treewidth of that graph. The algorithms differ in their computation time and their approximation guarantees. The first algorithm works in polynomial-time and finds a factor-O(log OPT) approximation, where OPT is the treewidth of the graph. This is the first polynomial-time algorithm that approximates the optimal by a factor that does not depend on n, the number of nodes in the input graph. As a result, we get an algorithm for finding pathwidth within a factor of O(log OPT⋅log n) from the optimal. We also present algorithms that approximate the treewidth of a graph by constant factors of 3.66, 4, and 4.5, respectively and take time that is exponential in the treewidth. These are more efficient than previously known algorithms by an exponential factor, and are of practical interest. Finding triangulations of minimum treewidth for graphs is central to many problems in computer science. Real-world problems in artificial intelligence, VLSI design and databases are efficiently solvable if we have an efficient approximation algorithm for them. Many of those applications rely on weighted graphs. We extend our results to weighted graphs and weighted treewidth, showing similar approximation results for this more general notion. We report on experimental results confirming the effectiveness of our algorithms for large graphs associated with real-world problems.  相似文献

It is known that any planar graph with diameter D has treewidth O(D) , and this fact has been used as the basis for several planar graph algorithms. We investigate the extent to which similar relations hold in other graph families. We show that treewidth is bounded by a function of the diameter in a minor-closed family, if and only if some apex graph does not belong to the family. In particular, the O(D) bound above can be extended to bounded-genus graphs. As a consequence, we extend several approximation algorithms and exact subgraph isomorphism algorithms from planar graphs to other graph families.  相似文献

A nonplanar graph G is near-planar if it contains an edge e such that Ge is planar. The problem of determining the crossing number of a near-planar graph is exhibited from different combinatorial viewpoints. On the one hand, we develop min-max formulas involving efficiently computable lower and upper bounds. These min-max results are the first of their kind in the study of crossing numbers and improve the approximation factor for the approximation algorithm given by Hliněny and Salazar (Graph Drawing GD’06). On the other hand, we show that it is NP-hard to compute a weighted version of the crossing number for near-planar graphs.  相似文献

We consider the problem of updating a single-source shortest path in either a directed or an undirected graph, with positive real edge weights. Our algorithms for the incremental problem (handling edge insertions and cost decrements) work for any graph; they have optimal space requirements and query time, but their performances depend on the class of the considered graph. The cost of updates is computed in terms of amortized complexity and depends on the size of the output modifications. In the case of graphs with bounded genus (including planar graphs), graphs with bounded arboricity (including bounded degree graphs), and graphs with bounded treewidth, the incremental algorithms require O(log n) amortized time per vertex update, where a vertex is considered updated if it reduces its distance from the source. For general graphs with n vertices and m edges our incremental solution requires O( log n) amortized time per vertex update. We also consider the decremental problem for planar graphs, providing algorithms and data structures with analogous performances. The algorithms, based on Dijkstra's technique [6], require simple data structures that are really suitable for a practical and straightforward implementation. Abstract. A subset A of the vertices of a graph G is an asteroidal set if for each vertex a ∈ A a connected component of G-N[a] exists containing A\backslash{a} . An asteroidal set of cardinality three is called asteriodal triple and graphs without an asteriodal triple are called AT-free . The maximum cardinality of an asteroidal set of G , denoted by \an(G) , is said to be the asteriodal number of G . We present a scheme for designing algorithms for triangulation problems on graphs. As a consequence, we obtain algorithms to compute graph parameters such as treewidth, minimum fill-in and vertex ranking number. The running time of these algorithms is a polynomial (of degree asteriodal number plus a small constant) in the number of vertices and the number of minimal separators of the input graph.  相似文献

An undirected graph is viewed as a simplicial complex. The notion of a graph embedding of a guest graph in a host graph is generalized to the realm of simplicial maps. Dilation is redefined in this more general setting. Lower bounds on dilation for various guest and host graphs are considered. Of particular interest are graphs that have been proposed as communication networks for parallel architectures. Bhattet al. provide a lower bound on dilation for embedding a planar guest graph in a butterfly host graph. Here, this lower bound is extended in two directions. First, a lower bound that applies to arbitrary guest graphs is derived, using tools from algebraic topology. Second, this lower bound is shown to apply to arbitrary host graphs through a new graph-theoretic measure, called bidecomposability. Bounds on the bidecomposability of the butterfly graph and of thek-dimensional torus are determined. As corollaries to the main lower-bound theorem, lower bounds are derived for embedding arbitrary planar graphs, genusg graphs, andk-dimensional meshes in a butterfly host graph. Consider an n-vertex planar graph G. The depth of an embedding Γ of G is the maximum distance of its internal faces from the external one. Several researchers pointed out that the quality of a planar embedding can be measured in terms of its depth. We present an O(n 4)-time algorithm for computing an embedding of G with minimum depth. This bound improves on the best previous bound by an O(nlog n) factor. As a side effect, our algorithm improves the bounds of several algorithms that require the computation of a minimum-depth embedding.  相似文献

In this paper we study the GRAPH ISOMORPHISM problem on graphs of bounded treewidth, bounded degree, or bounded bandwidth. GRAPH ISOMORPHISM can be solved in polynomial time for graphs of bounded treewidth, pathwidth, or bandwidth, but the exponent depends on the treewidth, pathwidth, or bandwidth. Thus, we look for special cases where ``fixed parameter tractable' polynomial time algorithms can be established. We introduce some new and natural graph parameters: the (rooted) path distance width, which is a restriction of bandwidth, and the (rooted) tree distance width, which is a restriction of treewidth. We give algorithms that solve GRAPH ISOMORPHISM in O(n 2 ) time for graphs with bounded rooted path distance width, and in O(n 3 ) time for graphs with bounded rooted tree distance width. Additionally, we show that computing the path distance width of a graph is NP-hard, but both path and tree distance width can be computed in O(n k+1 ) time, when they are bounded by a constant k; the rooted path or tree distance width can be computed in O(ne) time. A team of mobile agents, called guards, tries to keep an intruder out of an assigned area by blocking all possible attacks. In a graph model for this setting, the guards and the intruder are located on the vertices of a graph, and they move from node to node via connecting edges. The area protected by the guards is an induced subgraph of the given graph. We investigate the algorithmic aspects of the guarding problem, which is to find the minimum number of guards sufficient to patrol the area. We show that the guarding problem is PSPACE-hard and provide a set of approximation algorithms. All approximation algorithms are based on the study of a variant of the game where the intruder must reach the guarded area in a single step in order to win. This variant of the game appears to be a 2-approximation for the guarding problem, and for graphs without cycles of length 5 the minimum number of required guards in both games coincides. We give a polynomial time algorithm for solving the one-step guarding problem in graphs of bounded treewidth, and complement this result by showing that the problem is W[1]-hard parameterized by the treewidth of the input graph. We also show that the problem is fixed parameter tractable (FPT) parameterized by the treewidth and maximum degree of the input graph. Finally, we turn our attention to a large class of sparse graphs, including planar graphs and graphs of bounded genus, namely apex-minor-free graphs. We prove that the one-step guarding problem is FPT and possess a PTAS on apex-minor-free graphs.  相似文献

We explore three important avenues of research in algorithmic graph-minor theory, which all stem from a key min-max relation between the treewidth of a graph and its largest grid minor. This min-max relation is a keystone of the Graph Minor Theory of Robertson and Seymour, which ultimately proves Wagner’s Conjecture about the structure of minor-closed graph properties. First, we obtain the only known polynomial min-max relation for graphs that do not exclude any fixed minor, namely, map graphs and power graphs. Second, we obtain explicit (and improved) bounds on the min-max relation for an important class of graphs excluding a minor, namely, K 3,k -minor-free graphs, using new techniques that do not rely on Graph Minor Theory. These two avenues lead to faster fixed-parameter algorithms for two families of graph problems, called minor-bidimensional and contraction-bidimensional parameters, which include feedback vertex set, vertex cover, minimum maximal matching, face cover, a series of vertex-removal parameters, dominating set, edge dominating set, R-dominating set, connected dominating set, connected edge dominating set, connected R-dominating set, and unweighted TSP tour. Third, we disprove a variation of Wagner’s Conjecture for the case of graph contractions in general graphs, and in a sense characterize which graphs satisfy the variation. This result demonstrates the limitations of a general theory of algorithms for the family of contraction-closed problems (which includes, for example, the celebrated dominating-set problem). If this conjecture had been true, we would have had an extremely powerful tool for proving the existence of efficient algorithms for any contraction-closed problem, like we do for minor-closed problems via Graph Minor Theory.  相似文献

For t>0 and g≥0, a vertex-weighted graph of total weight W is (t,g)-trimmable if it contains a vertex-induced subgraph of total weight at least (1−1/t)W and with no simple path of more than g edges. A family of graphs is trimmable if for every constant t>0, there is a constant g≥0 such that every vertex-weighted graph in the family is (t,g)-trimmable. We show that every family of graphs of bounded domino treewidth is trimmable. This implies that every family of graphs of bounded degree is trimmable if the graphs in the family have bounded treewidth or are planar. We also show that every family of directed graphs of bounded layer bandwidth (a less restrictive condition than bounded directed bandwidth) is trimmable. As an application of these results, we derive polynomial-time approximation schemes for various forms of the problem of labeling a subset of given weighted point features with nonoverlapping sliding axes-parallel rectangular labels so as to maximize the total weight of the labeled features, provided that the ratios of label heights or the ratios of label lengths are bounded by a constant. This settles one of the last major open questions in the theory of map labeling.  相似文献

Abstract. In this paper we deal with competitive local on-line algorithms for non-preemptive channel allocation in mobile networks. The signal interferences in a network are modeled using an interference graph G . We prove that the greedy on-line algorithm is Δ -competitive, where Δ is the maximum degree of G . We employ the ``classify and randomly select" paradigm [5], [17], and give a 5 -competitive randomized algorithm for the case of planar interference graphs, a 2 -competitive randomized algorithm for trees, and a (2c) -competitive randomized algorithm for graphs of arboricity c . We also show that the problem of call control in mobile networks with multiple available frequencies reduces to the problem of call control in mobile networks with a single frequency. Using this reduction, we present on-line algorithms for general networks with a single frequency. We give a local on-line algorithm which is (α (δ +1 + α )/(1/2+α ) 2 )-competitive, where α is the independence number of G , and δ is the average degree of G . The above results hold in the case when the duration of each request is infinite, and the benefit the algorithm gains by accepting each request is equal to one. They are extended to handle requests of arbitrary durations, and arbitrary benefits.  相似文献

A t-spanner of a graph G is a spanning subgraph S in which the distance between every pair of vertices is at most t times their distance in G. If S is required to be a tree then S is called a tree t-spanner of G. In 1998, Fekete and Kremer showed that on unweighted planar graphs deciding whether G admits a tree t-spanner is polynomial time solvable for t?3 and is NP-complete when t is part of the input. They also left as an open problem if the problem is polynomial time solvable for every fixed t?4. In this work we resolve the open question of Fekete and Kremer by proving much more general results:

    The problem of finding a t-spanner of treewidth at most k in a given planar graph G is fixed parameter tractable parameterized by k and t. Moreover, for every fixed t and k, the running time of our algorithm is linear.

    Our technique allows to extend the result from planar graphs to much more general classes of graphs. An apex graph is a graph that can be made planar by the removal of a single vertex. We prove that the problem of finding a t-spanner of treewidth k is fixed parameter tractable on graphs that do not contain some fixed apex graph as a minor, i.e. on apex-minor-free graphs. The class of apex-minor-free graphs contains planar graphs and graphs of bounded genus.

    Finally, we show that the tractability border of the t-spanner problem cannot be extended beyond the class of apex-minor-free graphs and in this sense our results are tight. In particular, for every t?4, the problem of finding a tree t-spanner is NP-complete on K6-minor-free graphs.

Many hard algorithmic problems dealing with graphs, circuits, formulas and constraints admit polynomial-time upper bounds if the underlying graph has small treewidth. The same problems often encourage reducing the maximal degree of vertices to simplify theoretical arguments or address practical concerns. Such degree reduction can be performed through a sequence of splittings of vertices, resulting in an expansion of the original graph. We observe that the treewidth of a graph may increase dramatically if the splittings are not performed carefully. In this context we address the following natural question: is it possible to reduce the maximum degree to a constant without substantially increasing the treewidth?We answer the above question affirmatively. We prove that any simple undirected graph G=(V,E) admits an expansion G′=(V′,E′) with the maximum degree ≤3 and tw(G′)≤tw(G)+1, where tw(?) is the treewidth of a graph. Furthermore, such an expansion will have no more than 2|E|+|V| vertices and 3|E| edges; it can be computed efficiently from a tree-decomposition of G. We also construct a family of examples for which the increase by 1 in treewidth cannot be avoided.  相似文献

In automatic graph drawing a given graph has to be laid out in the plane, usually according to a number of topological and aesthetic constraints. Nice drawings for sparse nonplanar graphs can be achieved by determining a maximum planar subgraph and augmenting an embedding of this graph. This approach appears to be of limited value in practice, because the maximum planar subgraph problem is NP-hard.We attack the maximum planar subgraph problem with a branch-and-cut technique which gives us quite good, and in many cases provably optimum, solutions for sparse graphs and very dense graphs. In the theoretical part of the paper, the polytope of all planar subgraphs of a graphG is defined and studied. All subgraphs of a graphG, which are subdivisions ofK 5 orK 3,3, turn out to define facets of this polytope. For cliques contained inG, the Euler inequalities turn out to be facet-defining for the planar subgraph polytope. Moreover, we introduce the subdivision inequalities,V 2k inequalities, and the flower inequalities, all of which are facet-defining for the polytope. Furthermore, the composition of inequalities by 2-sums is investigated.We also present computational experience with a branch-and-cut algorithm for the above problem. Our approach is based on an algorithm which searches for forbidden substructures in a graph that contains a subdivision ofK 5 orK 3,3. These structures give us inequalities which are used as cutting planes.Finally, we try to convince the reader that the computation of maximum planar subgraphs is indeed a practical tool for finding nice embeddings by applying this method to graphs taken from the literature.  相似文献

We shall present an algorithm for determining whether or not a given planar graph H can ever be a subgraph of a 4-regular planar graph. The algorithm has running time O(|H|2.5) and can be used to find an explicit 4-regular planar graph GH if such a graph exists. In a graph G a matching is a set of edges in which no two edges have a common endpoint. An induced matching is a matching in which no two edges are linked by an edge of G. The maximum induced matching (abbreviated MIM) problem is to find the maximum size of an induced matching for a given graph G. This problem is known to be NP-hard even on bipartite graphs or on planar graphs. We present a polynomial time algorithm which given a graph G either finds a maximum induced matching in G, or claims that the size of a maximum induced matching in G is strictly less than the size of a maximum matching in G. We show that the MIM problem is NP-hard on line-graphs, claw-free graphs, chair-free graphs, Hamiltonian graphs and r-regular graphs for r \geq 5. On the other hand, we present polynomial time algorithms for the MIM problem on (P 5,D m )-free graphs, on (bull, chair)-free graphs and on line-graphs of Hamiltonian graphs.  相似文献

The minimum k-terminal cut problem is of considerable theoretical interest and arises in several applied areas such as parallel and distributed computing, VLSI circuit design, and networking. In this paper we present two new approximation and exact algorithms for this problem on an n-vertex undirected weighted planar graph G. For the case when the k terminals are covered by the boundaries of m > 1 faces of G, we give a min{O(n 2 log n logm), O(m 2 n 1.5 log2 n + k n)} time algorithm with a (2–2/k)-approximation ratio (clearly, m \le k). For the case when all k terminals are covered by the boundary of one face of G, we give an O(n k3 + (n log n)k 2) time exact algorithm, or a linear time exact algorithm if k = 3, for computing an optimal k-terminal cut. Our algorithms are based on interesting observations and improve the previous algorithms when they are applied to planar graphs. To our best knowledge, no previous approximation algorithms specifically for solving the k-terminal cut problem on planar graphs were known before. The (2–2/k)-approximation algorithm of Dahlhaus et al. (for general graphs) takes O(k n 2 log n) time when applied to planar graphs. Our approximation algorithm for planar graphs runs faster than that of Dahlhaus et al. by at least an O(k/logm) factor (m \le k).  相似文献
