In this work, one ternary Al–40Zn–3Cu and seven quaternary Al–40Zn–3Cu–(0.25–5)Si alloys were synthesized by permanent mould casting. Their microstructure, mechanical and lubricated wear properties were investigated using appropriate test apparatus and techniques. As the silicon content increased the hardness of the alloys increased, but their elongation to fracture decreased. Tensile strength of the alloys decreased with increasing silicon content following a sharp decrease and a slight increase. Among the silicon-containing quaternary alloys the highest and the lowest tensile strength values (348 and 305 MPa) were obtained with the Al–40Zn–3Cu–2Si and Al–40Zn–3Cu–5Si alloys, respectively, while the base alloy (Al–40Zn–3Cu) exhibited a tensile strength of 390 MPa. However, the volume loss due to wear of the alloys increased with increasing silicon content after showing an initial increase and a sharp decrease. The lowest wear loss was obtained with the alloy containing approximately 2% Si which has the highest tensile strength among the quaternary alloys containing more than 0.25% Si. Wear surfaces of the alloys were characterized mainly by smearing indicating that adhesion is the dominant wear mechanism for the experimental alloys.  相似文献

Dry sliding friction and wear properties of ternary Al–25Zn–3Cu and quaternary Al–25Zn–3Cu–(1–5)Si alloys were investigated using a pin-on-disc test machine after examining their microstructures and mechanical properties. An alloy (Al–25Zn–3Cu–3Si), which exhibited the highest tensile and compressive strengths, was subjected to T7 heat treatment. Surface and subsurface of the wear samples were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The hardness and both tensile and compressive strengths of the alloys increased with increasing silicon content, but the trend reversed for the latter ones above 3% Si. It was observed that T7 heat treatment reduced the hardness and both tensile and compressive strengths of the Al–25Zn–3Cu–3Si alloy, but increased its elongation to fracture greatly. Three distinct regions were observed underneath the surface of the wear samples of the Al–25Zn–3Cu–3Si alloy. The formation of these regions was related to the heavy deformation of surface material and mixing, oxidation and smearing of wear material. Al–25Zn-based ternary and quaternary alloys in both as-cast and heat-treated conditions were found to be superior to SAE 660 bronze as far as their mechanical and dry sliding wear properties are concerned.  相似文献

The economic and environmental benefits of using light-weighting technology in automotive applications continue to attract attention for feasible commercial solutions. This study investigates the use of pulsed electron beam melting of a hypereutectic Al–Si alloy as a possible modification procedure for cylinder crankcase bore facing surfaces. Machined surfaces of an A390 alloy were subjected to five pulsed electron doses with an applied cathode potential between 16.5 and 36 kV. It was found that increasing beam accelerating voltages led to an initial decrease (1.4 μm R a) but subsequent increase (4.0 μm R a) in average surface roughness values associated with surface crater formation due to sub-surface melting and eruption. Surfaces were tested under dry sliding tribological conditions against 52100 bearing steel in a reciprocating geometry. Average dynamic friction coefficients were higher (0.9) compared to the untreated alloy surface (0.6) as a result of a greater degree of adhesion to the counterface. However, FIB cross sections of worn surfaces indicated that this activated an oxidative type wear process which ultimately led to the formation of a beneficial surface tribo-film on the EBM-treated surfaces, improving the specific wear rates by up to 66%.  相似文献

Diamond-like carbon (DLC) and microdimples are two potential surface modification techniques that are extensively studied to be utilized in biotribological interfaces in order to reduce the friction coefficient and wear rate. However, in situ observation of bovine serum–lubricated DLC and microdimpled surface contacts are not well understood. In this study, a DLC-coated and a microdimpled steel ball rubbing against a Cr-coated glass disk, where 25% bovine serum was used as a lubricant and the temperature was maintained at 37°C, were investigated. The behaviors of ithe nterface were ca`ptured using optical interferometry and the friction coefficients were simultaneously measured using a torque sensor. The experimental results reveal that DLC/glass sliding is scuffing-free, with a lower friction coefficient; however, the formation of a lubricating film is insignificant. On the other hand, the dimples retained lubrication and, as a result, the wear of the glass disk was minimized; however, the friction coefficient was not reduced. Therefore, DLC and microdimples individually have few improved tribological features, but their combination should be considered to maximize performance.  相似文献

The tribological responses of palm oil and soybean oil, combined with two commercial antiwear additives (zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate and boron compound), were investigated at a lubricant temperature of 100°C and under severe contact conditions in a reciprocating sliding contact. The friction coefficient of palm oil with zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate was closest to the commercial mineral engine oil, with a 2% difference. The soybean oil with zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate produced a 57% improvement in wear resistance compared to its pure oil state. The existence of boron nitride in vegetable oils was only responsive in reduction of wear rather than friction. The response of commercial antiwear additives with vegetable oils showed a potential for the future improvement in the performance of vegetable oils.  相似文献

Wear behavior of Mg–3Al–0.4Si–0.1Zn alloy was studied as a function of applied load and sliding speed under dry sliding conditions using a pin-on-disk configuration within 20–380 N and 0.1–4.0 m/s. An empirical wear transition map has been constructed to delineate the conditions under which severe wear initiated. The roles of microstructural evolution, hardness change in subsurface and surface oxidation on wear transition were also studied. The results indicate that the transition to severe wear occurs when the deformed microstructure in surface layer of material transforms into dynamic recrystallization (DRX) microstructure. A contact surface DRX temperature criterion for mild to severe wear transition is proposed, and the contact surface DRX temperatures are calculated using activation energy obtained by hot compression tests. A model for predicating mild to severe wear transition load has been developed based on the proposed contact surface DRX temperature criterion. The mild to severe wear transition loads are well predicted within the sliding speed range of 0.8–4.0 m/s.  相似文献

Polyimide/Epoxy resin–molybdenum disulfide bonded solid lubricant coatings (denoted as PI/EP-MoS2) were prepared. The influence of polyfluo-wax (denoted as PFW) on the microhardness and friction and wear behavior of as-prepared PI/EP-MoS2 lubricant coating was measured using a microhardness tester and a reciprocating ball-on-disc tribometer, respectively. The worn surfaces of the lubricant coatings were observed with a scanning electron microscope, and their wear rate was determined with a Micro XAM surface mapping microscope. Moreover, the transfer films formed on the counterpart steel ball surfaces were analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Results indicate that the incorporation of a proper content of PFW filler is effective at improving the antifriction performance of the PI/EP-MoS2 lubricant coating while maintaining better wear resistance. Moreover, the friction coefficient of the lubricant coating decreases with increasing content of PFW from 2 to 10%, and the one with a filler content over 6% PFW has a steady friction coefficient of 0.07. The improvement in the antifriction performance of the lubricant coating with the incorporation of the PFW filler is attributed to the excellent lubricity of homogeneously distributed PFW.  相似文献

Rare earth (RE) elements have positive effects on Al alloy, while most research is focused on microstructure and mechanical properties. As important application indices, toughness and plasticity are properties that are sensitive to alloy fracture characteristics, and few research studies have characterized the fracture properties of Al–Cu–Mn alloy on RE elements. The effect of different contents of Y on the fracture properties of Al–Cu–Mn alloy is investigated. T6 heat treatment (solid solution and artificial aging treatment), optical microscope (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) methods are applied to the alloy. Results showed that when Y element is present at 0.1%, the section of the as-cast alloy has smaller sized dimples and the fracture mode presents ductile features. Slight changes in hardness are also observed and maintained at about 60 HV. With increasing content of the RE element Y from 0.1 to 0.5%, the θ phase and Cu atoms in the matrix were reduced and most stopped at Grain boundaries (GBs). Micro-segregation and an enriched zone of Y near the GBs gradually increased. At the same time, the inter-metallic compound AlCuY is aggregated at grain junctions causing deterioration of the micro-structure and fracture properties of the alloy. After T6 treatment, the flatness of the fracture surface was lower than that of all the as-cast alloy showing lots of dimples and teared edges with a significant increase in hardness. When Y content was 0.1%, the strength and hardness of the alloy increased due to refinement of the grain strengthening effect. The content of Y elements segregated in the inter-dendritic zone and GBs is reduced. Plasticity and deformation compatibility also improved, making cracks difficult to form and merge with each other along adjacent grain junctions and providing an increased potential for ductile fracture. This paper proposes the addition of RE Y as an effective and prospective strategy to improve the fracture properties of the Al–Cu–Mn alloy and provide a meaningful reference in terms of improving overall performance.  相似文献

The tribological behavior of friction materials is complex under various operating conditions. The present article discusses the sensitivity of tribological behaviors of friction materials to load and speed under dry and water-lubricated conditions qualitatively and μ of values was also analyzed quantitatively based on regression analysis. The friction and wear behaviors of friction materials were evaluated on a ring-on-block-type test rig. It was observed that the material itself was the dominant factor in μ sensitivity of friction materials, followed by sliding speed. The influence of the interaction of load and speed was negligible under water-lubricated condition. The friction coefficient of the composite was less sensitive to operating parameters under water-lubricated condition.  相似文献

The origin of this article is the quantification of productivity gains and the improvement in surface integrity seen for a recent titanium alloy that is seeing increasing use in the aeronautical industry. The Ti555–3 titanium alloy, which is starting to find greater application in the aeronautical field, exhibits certain difficulties in terms of machining. High Pressure Coolant (HPC) assisted turning consists of projecting a high pressure coolant jet between the chip and the tool. Comparisons are made between assisted turning using variable jet pressure and conventional turning (dry and classical lubrication). It is shown that it is possible to improve productivity by using HPC-assisted machining. The results highlight good chip fragmentation and a great improvement of tool life with HPC assistance. Surface integrity is also shown to be improved, through surface roughness parameters that decrease, and surface residual stresses that become more compressive. These effects have been attributed to the thermo-mechanical action of the coolant jet resulting in lower cutting forces, lower coefficient of friction and lower temperature in the cutting zone.  相似文献

Both plasma chromizing and carburization following plasma chromizing (duplex treatment) for Ti–Al–Nb alloy were performed, respectively, and the microstructure, dynamic ultra-microhardness, and elastic modulus of the alloying layer were determined. Using silicon nitride (Si3N4) balls as the counterface materials, dry sliding friction tests on the substrate, the chromized layer, and the duplex-treated layer were completed by ball-on-disk tribometer at room temperature. The results indicated that the duplex-treated layer was mainly composed of Cr23C6, Cr2Nb, pure chromium, and carbon phases, while the chromized layer consisted of Al8Cr5 and Cr2Nb phases. The ultra-microhardness of the duplex-treated layer was higher than that of the chromized layer, whereas the elastic modulus of the duplex-treated layer was lower than that of the chromized layer. The friction coefficient of the duplex-treated layer was about three times lower than that of the chromized layer, while the wear rate was one order of magnitude lower than that of the chromized layer.  相似文献

The purpose of this study is to explore the effect of SiC reinforcement along with immiscible element addition in spray formed Al–Si base alloy. The investigation is done for four different compositions, i.e., Al–Si base alloy, Al–Si/SiC, Al–Si–5Sn/SiC and Al–Si–10Sn/SiC composite. The dry sliding wear properties of base alloy and composites were investigated against EN 31 steel at five different normal loads (14.7, 24.5, 34.3, 44.1 and 53.9 N). The tests were carried out in dry sliding conditions with a sliding speed of 1.6 ms−1 over pin-on-disc tribometer. Each composition is tested at four different temperatures 50, 75, 100 and 150 °C. To determine the wear mechanism, the worn surfaces of the samples were examined using scanning electron microscope (SEM). The composites emerge to be better wear resistant material than base alloy especially at higher loads. The optimum wear reduction was obtained in Al–Si–10Sn/SiC composite at all the different normal loads and temperatures.  相似文献

The article has described a promising oxyalloying technique for the surface modification of machine parts made of iron–carbon alloys that operate under conditions of friction and wear. The new method has been implemented via the surface impregnation of steel and cast-iron parts with superheated steam of aqueous solutions of salts containing chemically active alloying elements. A multilayer coating formed on the surfaces of parts as a result of this treatment increases their performance characteristics, which has been confirmed by the integrated research.  相似文献

The Cu–Fe matrix continuous braking friction materials using SiC as abrasive were fabricated by powder metallurgy technique, and the effect of content and size of SiC were investigated. The tribological properties of friction materials sliding against AISI 1045 steel ring were carried out on a block-on-ring tester at different loads and sliding speeds. The strengthening effect of nano-SiC (55 nm) was superior to that of micro-SiC (70 μm) of the tribological properties for friction materials. The friction coefficients of friction materials increased with increasing nano-SiC content. However, the wear rates decreased with increasing nano-SiC content and then increased when the content of nano-SiC particle exceeded 10 wt%. The specimen contained 10% nano-SiC had the best tribological properties at different testing conditions.  相似文献

Fretting behavior of Cu–Al coating on Ti–6Al–4V substrate was investigated with and without fatigue load. Soft and rough Cu–Al coating resulted in abrasive wear and a large amount of debris remained at the contact surface, which caused an increase in tangential force during the fretting test under gross slip condition. Fretting in the partial slip condition also showed the wear of coating. To characterize wear, dissipated energies during fretting were calculated from fretting loops and wear volumes were obtained from worn surface profiles. Energy approach of wear analysis showed a linear relationship between wear volume and accumulated dissipated energy. This relationship was independent of fatigue loading condition and extended from partial slip to gross slip regimes. As an alternate but simple approach for wear analysis, accumulated relative displacement range was correlated with the wear volume. This also resulted in a linear relationship as in the case of accumulated dissipated energy suggesting that the accumulated relative displacement range can be used as an alternative parameter for dissipated energy to characterize the wear. When the maximum wear depth was equal to the thickness of Cu–Al coating, harder Ti–6Al–4V substrate inhibited further increase in wear depth. Only when a considerable energy was supplied through a large value of the applied displacement, wear in the substrate material could occur beyond the thickness of coating.  相似文献

Slip and fall accidents cause frequent occupational injuries. Despite recent evidence that boundary lubrication is relevant to slipping, few studies have examined the mechanisms that contribute to shoe?Cfloor friction in this lubrication regime. This study aims to identify the contributions of adhesion and hysteresis to friction in boundary lubrication. Three shoe materials (40 Shore A hardness polyurethane, 60 Shore A hardness rubber, and 70 Shore A hardness rubber), two floor materials (vinyl and marble), and six lubricants (water, 1.5?% detergent, 25?% glycerol?C75?% water, 50?% glycerol?C50?% water, 75?% glycerol?C25?% water, and canola oil) were tested at a single sliding speed (0.01?m?s?1). Dry adhesion and hysteresis were quantified for each of the shoe?Cfloor combinations and lubricated adhesion was quantified for all shoe?Cfloor-fluid combinations. The contribution of adhesion and hysteresis to shoe?Cfloor-lubricant friction was affected by both the shoe and floor material due to differences in hardness and roughness. Lubricated adhesion was complex and multifactorial with contributions from the shoe, fluid, shoe?Cfloor interaction, floor-lubricant interaction, and shoe-lubricant interactions. A simple regression model including two fluid coefficients and the dry adhesion friction force was able to predict 49?% of the lubricated adhesion friction variability.  相似文献

The abrasion wear resistance of Fe–32Cr–4.5C wt% hardfacing alloy was investigated as a function of matrix microstructure. In this study, the alloy was deposited on ASTM A36 carbon steel plates by the shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) process and the as-welded matrix microstructure was changed into ferrite, martensite, and tempered martensite by heat treatment processes. The Pin-on-disk test results show that under low (5 N) and high (20 N) load conditions, the wear resistance behavior of the as-welded matrix sample is 20 and 15% higher, respectively, than the martensitic matrix sample, although the bulk hardness of the as-welded matrix is 5% lower. The ferritic matrix sample has the poorest wear resistance behavior which is less than half of that of the as-welded matrix one. Micro-ploughing, micro-cutting, and micro-cracking are recognized as the micro-mechanisms in the material removal in which the proportion of micro-ploughing mechanism increased by increasing matrix toughness.  相似文献
