This article introduces the background and need for this special issue of the Consulting Psychology Journal: Practice and Research on “Defining and Measuring Character in Leadership.” The introduction reviews some of the history of the concept of character in leadership, presents the major themes of the special issue, and briefly describes the 6 papers related to 3 models of character in leadership (ethical/virtuous leadership, authentic transformational leadership, and worthy leadership) and the specific elements of integrity, ethics, virtues, and moral potency. The introduction notes that each article in the special issue indicates how character in leadership can be defined, operationalized, and assessed. The implications of each model for the practice of consulting psychology are discussed. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Theories of leadership have neglected diversity issues. As the population within the United States and in countries throughout the world becomes increasingly diverse, the contexts in which leadership occurs within institutions and communities will also become increasingly diverse. Attention to diversity is not simply about representation of leaders from diverse groups in the ranks of leadership. Attention to diversity means paradigm shifts in our theories of leadership so as to make them inclusive; it means incorporating explanations of how dimensions of diversity shape our understanding of leadership. It means paying attention to the perceptions and expectations of diverse leaders by diverse followers and to how bias influences the exercise of leadership. Although leadership theories have evolved and reflect changing social contexts, they remain silent on issues of equity, diversity, and social justice. Theories of leadership need to be expanded to incorporate diversity if they are to be relevant for the 21st century amidst new social contexts, emerging global concerns, and changing population demographics. This article surveys contemporary trends in leadership theory as well as its current status and the social context that has shaped the contours of leadership studies. Emphasis is placed on the urgent need for collaboration among social-neuro-cognitive scientists in order to achieve an integrated theory, and the author points to promising leads for accomplishing this. He also asserts that the 4 major threats to world stability are a nuclear/biological catastrophe, a world-wide pandemic, tribalism, and the leadership of human institutions. Without exemplary leadership, solving the problems stemming from the first 3 threats will be impossible. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

When we were asked to edit a special edition of this Journal on new developments in the psychotherapy of children and youth, it was our hope that we could integrate, organize, and interrelate the various trends in child and youth psychotherapy, mixing and blending them, creating if you will a gazpacho. However, it soon became clear to us that this would be an impossible task, for there was almost an infinite number of dimensions along which the contributions that had come in could be classified. This wide diversity suggested to us that it would, indeed, be presumptuous and perhaps premature to attempt to organize these various elements, each of which stands on its own and has a unique message. This special issue on long-term care, guest edited by Carl and Susan Eisdorfer, addresses an issue that is rapidly becoming the most important health policy issue of the 1980s. The dilemma that we face as citizens and as rehabilitation professionals alike centers on our rapidly growing population of elderly citizens. While we have made unprecedented medical advances that have allowed for greater longevity, our health and social policies have not kept pace with these advances. We are therefore ill-equipped to deal with the myriad of economic, social, and health issues that confront our nation's elderly citizens. This issue of Rehabilitation Psychology is an attempt to address these questions by individuals who are leaders in the field of aging and long-term care. A special issue of the American Psychologist (January 2007) was devoted to leadership. The six articles, by W. Bennis (see record 2006-23492-002); S. J. Zaccaro (see record 2006-23492-003); V. H. Vroom and A. G. Yago (see record 2006-23492-004); B. J. Avolio (see record 2006-23492-005); R. J. Sternberg (see record 2006-23492-006); and R. J. Hackman and R. Wageman (see record 2006-23492-007), were written from an "industrial" perspective that places primary emphasis on positional leaders and their actions. Some readers of this series might conclude that the industrial model best explains leadership. It does not. The ecological perspective offers an alternative that deserves consideration. It is time to end the dominance of the industrial perspective. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

The breadth of developments in the area of psychotherapy and the significant policy issues have prompted the development of Special Issues on Psychotherapy Research for the American Psychologist (AP) and the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology (JCCP). The JCCP issue has been designed to bring together different types of articles, including discussion and review articles as well as empirical investigations, to address theoretical and methodological issues, to convey current thinking in substantive areas, and to outline future directions. The AP issue has been designed to address topics of psychotherapy research that interface with the public domain as well as topics regarding knowledge utilization and training. The simultaneous publication of the two issues is intended to provide a unique resource for professionals interested in current research topics and their implications for the field and healthcare in general. In the development of the Special Issues, there was no intention to represent the field in terms of all or even most of the different orientations, approaches, and substantive positions. The Special Issues are designed to illustrate and sample the range of advances and current directions in research and to point to new areas as well. The articles that follow in this Special Issue address several specific areas of work from different segments of the field and convey major directions in contemporary research, new methodologies, and reformulations of major questions about processes and outcomes of treatment. It is no secret that today's hyper-competitive, fast-paced, and rapidly changing global economy puts a premium on adaptable organizations and flexible leaders. Even advertising campaigns celebrate the “agile enterprise” and channel the spirit of “constant self-reinvention.” However, what can consulting psychologists do to help managers become more flexible and adaptable leaders? In this introduction to the special issue I provide an overview of the 5 focal articles and the capstone summary article. The articles in this issue are written by respected scholars and experienced practitioners who provide evidence-based guidance to practical questions such as: Why is flexibility so important, especially in tough economic times plagued by crisis and uncertainty?; how can practitioners predict and assess a manager's degree of flexibility?; and, how can leadership training and development interventions promote greater flexibility and adaptability? Our primary goal in this special issue on research methodology is to explore methodological issues across a broad range of psychological assessment research and to highlight pitfalls and problems that often plague researchers engaged in this pursuit. We believe that the methodological articles in this special issue will serve as an important resource for future research in the field of personality assessment. The trait-based perspective of leadership has a long but checkered history. Trait approaches dominated the initial decades of scientific leadership research. Later, they were disdained for their inability to offer clear distinctions between leaders and nonleaders and for their failure to account for situational variance in leadership behavior. Recently, driven by greater conceptual, methodological, and statistical sophistication, such approaches have again risen to prominence. However, their contributions are likely to remain limited unless leadership researchers who adopt this perspective address several fundamental issues. The author argues that combinations of traits and attributes, integrated in conceptually meaningful ways, are more likely to predict leadership than additive or independent contributions of several single traits. Furthermore, a defining core of these dominant leader trait patterns reflects a stable tendency to lead in different ways across disparate organizational domains. Finally, the author summarizes a multistage model that specifies some leader traits as having more distal influences on leadership processes and performance, whereas others have more proximal effects that are integrated with, and influenced by, situational parameters. This special issue represents an effort by the journal Experimental and Clinical Psychopharmacology to emphasize its interdisciplinary mission by encouraging the writing of articles on clinical research and the interchange between basic and clinical research on mental illness and the addictions. This special issue opens with a commentary from A. I. Leshner (2002), retired director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, which emphasizes the importance of translating research findings into clinical practice. Four review articles and 12 original research reports provide a broad sampling of contemporary clinical research, including behavioral therapy, pharmacotherapy, psychiatric comorbidity, and special populations, and also illustrate linkages between clinical research and basic fields of inquiry, including behavioral theory, neuropsychology, neuropharmacology, and statistics. The five articles that make up the bulk of this special issue collectively illustrate new methods for examining the utility of sub-test and scale-level profile analysis. By necessity they are preliminary, but they illustrate methods that may indeed prove useful and may help resolve this divide between research and practice. This special issue grew out of a symposium conceived and organized by Cecil Reynolds at the American Psychological Association in 1998. The articles and one of the commentaries in this special issue are extensions of that symposium. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献
