A novel semi‐interpenetrating polymer network (semi‐IPN) hydrogel composed of chitosan and poly(methacrylic acid) was synthesized using formaldehyde as a crosslinker. The amount of crosslinker was searched and optimized. The structure of the hydogel was investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The spectrum shows that a structure of polyelectrolyte complex exists in the hydrogel. The effects of pH, ionic strength, and inorganic salt on the swelling behaviors of the hydrogel were studied. The results indicate the hydrogel has excellent pH sensitivity in the range of pH 1.40 to 4.50, pH reversible response between pH 1.80 and 6.80, and ionic strength reversible response between ionic strength 0.2 and 2.0M. The results also show that the hydrogel has a bit higher swelling capacity in a mix solution of calcium chloride (CaCl2) and hydrochloric acid (HCl) solution than in a mix solution of sodium chloride (NaCl) and HCl. These results were further confirmed through morphological change measured by scanning electron microscope (SEM). © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 98: 1720–1726, 2005  相似文献

Semi‐interpenetrating network hydrogel films were prepared using hemicellulose and chemically crosslinked chitosan. Hemicellulose was extracted from aspen by using a novel alkaline treatment and characterized by HPSEC, and consisted of a mixture of high and low molecular weight polymeric fractions. HPLC analysis of the acid hydrolysate of the hemicellulose showed that its major constituent sugar was xylose. X‐ray analysis showed that the relative crystallinity of hydrogels increased with increasing hemicellulose content up to 31.3%. Strong intermolecular interactions between chitosan and hemicellulose were evidenced by FT‐IR analysis. Quantitative analysis of free amino groups showed that hemicellulose could interrupt the chemical crosslinking of chitosan macromolecules. Mechanical testing and swelling experiments were used to define the effective network crosslink density and average molecular weight between crosslinks. Swelling ratios increased with increasing hemicellulose content and mainly consisted of H‐bonded bound water. Results revealed that by altering the hydrogel preparation steps and hemicellulose content, crosslink density and swelling behavior of semi‐IPN hydrogels could be controlled without deteriorating their mechanical properties. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Semi‐interpenetrating networks (Semi‐IPNs) with different compositions were prepared from poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS), and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) by the sol‐gel process in this study. The characterization of the PDMS/PVA semi‐IPN was carried out using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and swelling measurements. The presence of PVA domains dispersed in the PDMS network disrupted the network and allowed PDMS to crystallize, as observed by the crystallization and melting peaks in the DSC analyses. Because of the presence of hydrophilic (? OH) and hydrophobic (Si? (CH3)2) domains, there was an appropriate hydrophylic/hydrophobic balance in the semi‐IPNs prepared, which led to a maximum equilibrium water content of ~ 14 wt % without a loss in the ability to swell less polar solvents. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new strategy was used to prepare a semi‐interpenetrating polymer network (semi‐IPN)–like poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) polymeric hydrogel, consisting of either low (2300) or high (33,000) molecular weight linear PNIPAAm chains and the crosslinked PNIPAAm network. The properties of the resulting PNIPAAm hydrogels were characterized by DSC and SEM as well as their swelling ratios at various temperatures, the deswelling in hot water (48°C), and the oscillating shrinking–swelling properties within small temperature cycles. It was found that the deswelling rate of these semi‐IPN–like PNIPAAm hydrogels was improved if the molecular weight and/or composition of the linear PNIPAAm chains within the semi‐IPN–like PNIPAAm hydrogels were increased. This improved deswelling rate was attributed to the fast response nature of the linear PNIPAAm chains and the increased pore number in the matrix network, which provided numerous water channels for the water to diffuse out during the deswelling process at a temperature above the lower critical solution temperature. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm)/chitosan (CS) semi‐interpenetrating polymer network hydrogel particles were prepared by inverse suspension polymerization. The prepared particles were sensitive to both temperature and pH, and they had good reversibility in solution at different temperatures and pH values. The swelling ratios of PNIPAAm/CS hydrogel particles decreased slightly with the addition of CS, which did not shift the lower critical solution temperature. The drug‐release behavior of the particles was investigated using cyclic adenosine 3′,5′‐monophosphate (cAMP) as a model drug. The release of cAMP from the hydrogel particles was affected by temperature, pH, and the CS content in the particles. These results showed that semi‐IPN hydrogel particles appeared to be of great promise in pH‐ and temperature‐sensitive oral drug release. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Temperature‐ and pH‐responsive semi‐interpenetrating polymer network (semi‐IPN) hydrogels constructed with chitosan and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) were studied. The characterizations of semi‐IPN hydrogels were investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). IPN hydrogels exhibited a relatively high swelling ratio, 23.31%–145.20% at room temperature. The swelling ratio of hydrogels depends on pH and temperature. DSC was used to determine the amount of free water in IPN hydrogels. The amount of free water increased with increasing chitosan content in the semi‐IPN hydrogels. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two series of nanoclay reinforced, thermoresponsive hydrogels were prepared, one based on poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPA) and the other on semi‐interpenetrating networks containing PNIPA and poly(N‐vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP), designated as SIPNs. The gels were crosslinked with 1, 3, and 5 wt % inorganic clay (hectorite) and SIPN gels additionally contained 1 wt % of PVP. The hydrogels were tested in the “as‐prepared state,” i.e., at 10 wt % PNIPA concentration in water and at equilibrium (maximum) swelling. Increasing the concentration of nanoclays increases crosslink density, modulus, tensile strength, elongation (except in equilibrium swollen gels), hysteresis and with decreases in the degree of swelling, broadening of the phase transition region, and a decrease in elastic recovery at high deformations. The presence of linear PVP in the networks increases porosity and the pore size, increases swelling, deswelling rates, and hysteresis, but decreases slightly lower critical solution temperature (LCST), tensile strength, elongation, and elastic recovery. The strongest hydrogels were ones with 10 wt % PNIPA and 5 wt % of nanoclays, displaying tensile strengths of 85 kPa and elongation of 955%. All properties of hydrogels at the equilibrium swollen state are lower than in the as‐prepared state, due to the lower concentration of chains per unit volume, but the trends are preserved. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Films from castor oil‐based polyurethane (PU) prepolymer and nitroguar gum (NGG) with different contents (10–70 wt %) were prepared through solution casting method. The networks of PU crosslinked with 1,4‐butanediol were interpenetrated by linear NGG to form semi‐interpenetrating polymer networks (semi‐IPNs) in the blend films. The miscibility, morphology, and properties of the semi‐IPNs coded as PUNG films were investigated with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical thermal analysis, wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction, density measurement, ultraviolet spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, tensile, and solvent‐resistance testing. The results revealed that the semi‐IPNs films have good miscibility over the entire composition ratio of PU to NGG under study. The occurrence of hydrogen‐bonding interaction between PU and NGG played a key role in improvement of the material performance. Compared with the pure PU film, the PUNG films exhibited higher values of tensile strength (11.7–28.4 MPa). Meanwhile, incorporating NGG into the PU networks led to an improvement of thermal stability and better solvent‐resistance of the resulting materials. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two series of pH‐sensitive semi‐interpenetrating network hydrogels (semi‐IPN) based on chitosan (CS) natural polymer and acrylamide (AAm) and/or N‐hydroxymethyl acrylamide (HMA) monomers by varying the monomer and CS ratios were synthesized by free radical chain polymerization. 5‐Fluorouracil (5‐FU), a model anticancer drug, has been added to the feed composition before the polymerization. The characterization of gels indicated that the drug is molecularly dispersed in the polymer matrix. The swelling kinetics of drug‐loaded gels have decreased with increased HMA content at 37°C in both distilled water and buffer solutions with a pH of 2.1 or 7.4. Elastic modulus of the gels increased with the increase in HMA content and higher CS concentration enhanced the elastic modulus positively. Moreover, cumulative release percentages of the gels for 5‐FU were ca. 10% higher in pH 2.1 than those in pH 7.4 media. It was determined that they can be suitable for the use in both gastric and colon environments. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2015 , 132, 41886.  相似文献

The phosphorylated poly(vinyl alcohol) (P‐PVA) samples with various substitution degrees were prepared through the esterification reaction of PVA and phosphoric acid. By using chitosan (CTS), acrylic acid (AA) and P‐PVA as raw materials, ammonium persulphate (APS) as an initiator and N,N‐methylenebisacrylamide as a crosslinker, the CTS‐g‐PAA/P‐PVA semi‐interpenetrated polymer network (IPN) ssuperabsorbent hydrogel was prepared in aqueous solution by the graft copolymerization of CTS and AA and followed by an interpenetrating and crosslinking of P‐PVA chains. The hydrogel was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) techniques, and the influence of reaction variables, such as the substitution degree and content of P‐PVA on water absorbency were also investigated. FTIR and DSC results confirmed that PAA had been grafted onto CTS backbone and revealed the existence of phase separation and the formation of semi‐IPN network structure. SEM observations indicate that the incorporation of P‐PVA induced highly porous structure, and P‐PVA was uniformly dispersed in the polymeric network. Swelling results showed that CTS‐g‐PAA/P‐PVA semi‐IPN superabsorbent hydrogel exhibited improved swelling capability (421 g·g?1 in distilled water and 55 g·g?1 in 0.9 wt % NaCl solution) and swelling rate compared with CTS‐g‐PAA/PVA hydrogel (301 g·g?1 in distilled water and 47 g·g?1 in 0.9 wt % NaCl solution) due to the phosphorylation of PVA. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. For the increasing demands of multifunctional materials in applications such as drug delivery system, a pH‐ and temperature‐responsive polyelectrolyte copolymer gel system was studied using rheometry. Rheological properties, determined by plate–plate rheometry in oscillatory shear, of hydrogels formed by free radical initiated copolymerization of N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPA) and 2‐acrylamido‐2‐methylpropanesulphonic acid (AMPS) in the presence of methylene bisacrylamide (MBAA) as crosslinker are compared with the properties of semi‐interpenetrating network (SIPN) polyelectrolyte gels made by incorporation of poly(ethylene glycol) with molar mass 6000 g mol?1 (PEG6000). Based on our systematic studies for this PEG/SIPN system, the effects of initiator and crosslinker concentration, relative proportions of comonomer units in the main chains, PEG6000 content and temperature on viscoelastic properties, unusual high storage moduli at small strain for the SIPN were discussed. The SIPN gel with characteristics of PEG molecules as well as pH and temperature responsiveness from AMPS and NIPA units has potential application in drug delivery system design. Ice‐like rheological behavior of the PEG/AMPS‐NIPA SIPN gels at low temperature was first time reported and water remains homogeneous without phase separation in PEG/AMPS‐NIPA SIPN hydrogels at low temperature may be considered as an ideal candidate for water storage material. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Semi1 and semi2 interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) of PVC and in situ formed PMMA have been synthesized using diallyl phthalate and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as the crosslinkers of PVC and PMMA, respectively. These two types of IPNs have been compared w.r.t their physical, mechanical, and thermal properties and an endeavor has been made to find a correlation of these properties with the morphology generated in these systems. The semi1 IPNs displayed a decrease in their mechanical parameters and the physical properties as well, while in contrast, the semi2 IPNs exhibited a marginal increase in the corresponding values after an initial drop upto about 15% of crosslinked PMMA incorporation when compared to the crosslinked PVC in the case of semi1 IPN and linear PVC in the case of semi2 IPN. The various samples of semi1 and semi2 IPNs showed a two‐stage degradation typical of PVC, while confirming the increased stability with the samples having higher percentages of PMMA. The influence of crosslinking of the major matrix in semi1 IPN was almost counterbalanced by the influence of crosslinking in the dispersed PMMA phase in the case of semi2 IPN. The softening characteristics as detected by the extent of penetration of the probe, as has been detected by thermomechanical analysis, are in conformity with their mechanicals. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Semi‐interpenetrating polymer network hydrogels with different compositions of chitosan (Cs), acrylic acid, and citraconic acid were synthesized via free‐radical polymerization with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as a crosslinker. The variations of the swelling percentages of the hydrogels with time, temperature, and pH were determined, and Cs–poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) hydrogels were found to be most swollen at pH 7.4 and 37°C. Scanning electron micrographs of Cs–PAA and Cs–P(AA‐co‐CA)‐1 (Cs‐poly(acrylicacid‐co‐citraconir acid)?1) were taken to observe the morphological differences in the hydrogels. Although the less swollen hydrogel, Cs–P(AA‐co‐CA)‐1, had a sponge‐type structure, the most swollen hydrogel, Cs–PAA, displayed a uniform porous appearance. Fluconazole was entrapped in Cs–P(AA‐co‐CA)‐1 and Cs–PAA hydrogels, and the release was investigated at pH 4.0 and 37°C. The kinetic release parameters of the hydrogels (the gel characteristic constant and the swelling exponent) were calculated, and non‐Fickian diffusion was established for Cs–PAA, which released fluconazole much more slowly than the Cs–P(AA‐co‐CA)‐1 hydrogel. A therapeutic range was reached at close to 1 h for both hydrogels. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2009  相似文献

The thermosensitive material that could be transformed into gel at 37°C was prepared from chitosan (dissolved in acetic acid/sodium acetate buffer solution) and a mixture of α‐ and β‐glycerophosphate (αβ‐GP). The thermosensitive characteristics, appearance, and structure of the hydrogel were all affected by the pH, ionic strength, and CS/αβ‐GP ratio. The optimal conditions for the preparation of a transparent CS‐αβ‐GP thermosensitive hydrogel were pH 4.6, ionic strength 0.15 mol/L, and a CS/αβ‐GP ratio of 8.8/1.2 (v/v). The hydrogel was stable for at least 3 months at 4°C. We believe that hydrogen bonding interactions between the N? H (and C?O) groups of chitosan and the O? H groups of αβ‐GP play an important role during the process of sol‐to‐gel transition. The cumulative release of adriamycin from the CS‐αβ‐GP hydrogel, measured in PBS at pH 7.4, reached only 60 to 70% over 24 h, indicating that this material could be potentially used in a sustained drug delivery system. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Three series of novel semi‐interpenetrating polymer networks, based on crosslinked poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide), PNIPA, and different amounts of the linear poly(N‐vinylpyrrolidone), PVP, were synthesized to improve the mechanical properties and thermal response of PNIPA gels. The effect of the incorporation of the linear PVP into the temperature responsive networks on the temperature‐induced transition, swelling/deswelling behavior, and mechanical properties was studied. Polymer networks with four different crosslinking densities were prepared with varying molar ratios (25/1 to 100/1) of the monomer (N‐isopropylacrylamide) to the crosslinker (N,N′‐methylenebisacrylamide). The hydrogels were characterized by determination of the equilibrium degree of swelling, the dynamic shear modulus and the effective crosslinking density, as well as tensile strength and elongation at break. Furthermore, the deswelling kinetics of the hydrogels was studied by measuring their water retention capacity. The inclusion of the linear hydrophilic PVP in the PNIPA networks increased the equilibrium degree of swelling. The tensile strength of the semi‐interpenetrating networks (SIPNs) reinforced with linear PVP was higher than that of the PNIPA networks. The elongation at break of these SIPNs varied between 22% and 55%, which are 22 – 41% larger than those for pure PNIPA networks. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2009  相似文献

Semi‐interpenetrating polymer networks (semi‐IPNs), composed of chitosan and poly(hydroxy ethyl methacrylate) hydrogels, were prepared and the effects of various pH, temperatures, and an electric‐field on the swollen hydrogels were investigated. The swelling kinetics increased rapidly, reaching equilibrium within 60 min. Semi‐IPN hydrogels exhibited relatively high swelling ratios, 150~350%. The swelling ratio increased when the pH of the buffer was below pH 7 as a result of the dissociation of ionic bonds. Semi‐IPN hydrogels showed electroresponsiveness by shrinking when an electric field was applied. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 96: 86–92, 2005  相似文献

Semi‐interpenetrating polymer networks (semi‐IPNs) composed of poly(dimethyl–aminoethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) were synthesized by γ‐radiation; three semi‐IPNs with 80 : 20, 90 : 10, and 95 : 5 weight ratios of DMAEMA/PEO were obtained by use of this technique. The gel–dose curves showed that the hydrogels were characterized by a structure typical of semi‐IPNs and the results of elemental analysis supported this point. The temperature‐induced phase transition of semi‐IPNs with the composition of 95 : 5 was still retained, with the lower critical solution temperature of PDMAEMA shifting from 40 to 27°C. The temperature sensitivity of the other two semi‐IPNs gradually disappeared. The pH sensitivity of three semi‐IPNs was still retained but the pH shifted slightly to lower values with increasing PEO content in the semi‐IPNs. The effect of PEO content in semi‐IPNs on their environmental responsiveness was discussed. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 92: 2995–3001, 2004  相似文献

Interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) hydrogels composed of poly(2‐ethyl‐2‐oxazoline) (PEtOz) and chitosan (CS) were prepared with radical polymerization and were characterized for their swelling properties. Sample OC11 (hydrogel weight ratio PEtOz/CS = 1/1) swelled more than samples OC21 (PEtOz/CS = 2/1) and OC31 (PEtOz/CS =3/1), exhibiting a swelling ratio of about 2000 wt % in deionized water; the swelling ratios of the other samples were about 1000 and 700 wt %. The swelling behavior of the IPN hydrogels was observed under various pH and temperature conditions. The swelling ratios of the samples ranged from about 2000 to 6500 wt % at lower pHs, with a maximum swelling ratio of about 6500 wt % in a pH 2 aqueous solution. They exhibited low critical solution temperature behavior, with sample OC31 more sensitive to temperature and sample OC11 more sensitive to pH. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The present work reports a new method of preparing semi‐interpenetrating polymer network (semi‐IPN) membranes through in situ polymerization of bismaleimide (BMI) within polysulfone (PSF). It was found that BMI could be polymerized at ambient conditions in the presence of a proton donor and PSF without the use of an initiator or a catalyst. Chemical structure characterization of these semi‐IPNs by Fourier transform infrared attenuated total reflection (FTIR‐ATR) revealed the possibility of imide cleavage and formation of amic acid when BMI polymerization was continued for a longer time while X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed the protonation of imide nitrogen at shorter polymerization time. It was also found that size of thermoset BMI phase within the PSF thermoplastic has a significant impact on glass‐transition temperature of resulting semi‐IPN. By controlling the thermoset/thermoplastic phase separation of semi‐IPNs through dope composition and formation techniques, gas separation membranes with comparable selectivity and permeance that were up to 12 times higher than corresponding PSF membranes were formed. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Gelatin and DNA were mixed together in various ratios followed by the addition of glutaraldehyde as a cross‐linker. FT‐IR spectroscopy confirmed the formation of a semi‐interpenetrating polymer network (semi‐IPN) between the gelatin and DNA. The gelatin–DNA semi‐IPN hydrogel underwent, reversibly, remarkable changes in swelling degree in response to the variation of pH. In the low‐pH range, the hydrogel showed a lower swelling degree; with an increment in pH, the hydrogel was highly swollen, which is considered to originate from the complexation and de‐complexation between gelatin and DNA, as was verified by turbidity measurements. Higher contents of DNA result in an increase in the swelling degree, which is presumably due to the easy outward expansion of free DNA moieties. The permeability coefficient, P, for a model molecule, cimetidine, through the semi‐IPN hydrogel membranes was determined in pH 1.0 and pH 12.0 buffer solutions. The results show that the permeation of cimetidine is responsive to pH change, and an evident variation in the P values occurs in response to the pH of the media.
