The kinetics of methyl methacrylate (MMA) homopolymerization performed by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) is investigated in detail using ethyl‐2‐bromopropionate (EPN‐Br) as initiator, CuBr as catalyst, and pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) as ligand in ionic liquids (ILs) and acetonitrile. ILs in this research covered two different substitutional imidazolium cations and anions including halogen and halogen‐free ones. The typical cations include 1‐butyl‐3‐methylimidazolium, 1‐ethyl‐3‐methylimidazolium and the typical anions include bromide, tetrafluoroborate. The effects of solvents, temperature, and reaction ingredients ratios on the polymerization kinetics are all investigated in this article and the apparent energy of activation (ΔE) calculated for the ATRP of MMA in 1‐butyl‐3‐methyl‐imidazolium tetrafluoroborate is 6.95 KJ/mol. The number‐average molecular weights (Mn) increase linearly with conversion but are much higher than the theoretical values. It is probably due to the low concentration of deactivator at the early stage of polymerization and the lower bond energy of C‐Br in PMMA‐Br than that in EPN‐Br. Moreover, the catalyst is easily separated from the polymer and the regenerated catalyst is reused for more than three times. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2008 相似文献

The reverse atom transfer radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate was investigated in different solvents: xylene, N,N‐dimethylformamide, and pyridine. The polymerizations were uncontrolled, using 2,2′‐bipyridine as a ligand in xylene and pyridine because the catalyst (CuBr2/2,2′‐bipyridine complex) had poor solubility in the xylene system. In the pyridine system, the solubility of the catalyst increased, but the solvent could complex with CuBr2, which influenced the control of the polymerization. In the N,N‐dimethylformamide system, the catalyst could be dissolved in the solvent completely, but the ? N(CH3)2 group in N,N‐dimethylformamide could also complex with CuBr2, so the polymerization could not be well controlled. The ligand of 4,4′‐di(5‐nonyl)‐2,2′‐bipyridine was also investigated in xylene; the introduction of the ? CH(C4H9)2 group enabled the CuBr2/4,4′‐di(5‐nonyl)‐2,2′‐bipyridine complex to easily dissolve in xylene, and the polymerizations were well controlled. The number‐average molecular weight increased linearly with the monomer conversion from 4280 to 14,700. During the whole polymerization, the polydispersities were quite low (1.07–1.10). © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2007 相似文献

Well‐defined poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) with an α‐isobutyronitrile group and an ω‐bromine atom as the end groups was synthesized by the microemulsion polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) at 70°C with a 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile/CuBr2/2,2′‐bipyridine system. The conversion of the polymerization reached 81.9%. The viscosity‐average molecular weight of PMMA was high (380,000), and the polydispersity index was 1.58. The polymerization of MMA exhibited some controlled radical polymerization characteristics. The mechanism of controlled polymerization was studied. The presence of hydrogen and bromine atoms as end groups of the obtained PMMA was determined by 1H‐NMR spectroscopy. The shape and size of the final polymer particles were analyzed by scanning probe microscopy, and the diameters of the obtained particles were usually in the range of 60–100 nm. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Reverse atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of n‐butyl methacrylate (BMA) was conducted in an aqueous dispersed system. The influence of the surfactant, catalyst, reaction time and temperature on the colloidal stability and the control of polymerization was investigated. As a result, using an azo initiator (AIBN), a non‐ionic surfactant (Brij 35) and a hydrophobic ligand (dNbpy) to complex a copper halide, polymers with predetermined molecular weight and low polydispersity were obtained as stable latexes. The synthesis of magnetite nanoparticles coated with a well-defined graft polymer is reported. The magnetite nanoparticles with an initiator group for copper-mediated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), 2-(4-chlorosulfonylphenyl) ethyltrichlorosilane (CTCS) chemically bound on their surfaces were prepared by the self-assembled monolayer-deposition method. The surface-initiated ATRP of methyl methacrylate (MMA) was carried out with the CTCS-coated magnetite nanoparticles in the presence of free (sacrificing) initiator, p-toluenesulfonyl chloride. Polymerization proceeded in a living fashion, exhibiting first-order kinetics of monomer consumption and a proportional relationship between molecular weight of the graft polymer and monomer conversion, thus providing well-defined, low-polydispersity graft polymers with an approximate graft density of 0.7 chains/nm2. The molecular weight and polydispersity of the graft polymer were nearly equal to those of the free polymer produced in the solution, meaning that the free polymer is a good measure of the characteristics of the graft polymer. The graft polymer possessed exceptionally high stability and remarkably improved dispersibility of the magnetite nanoparticles in organic solvent. 相似文献

The atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate catalyzed by copper–tripodal complexes with ferrocene moieties (CuX/TRENFcImine, where X is Br or Cl, and TRENFcImine is tris‐[2‐(ferrocenylmethyleneimino)ethyl]amine) was investigated to understand the effect of redox active moieties on the performance of ATRP catalysts. The CuBr/TRENFcImine system was highly active, with 82% conversion in 2 h. However, the polymerization became slower at higher molar ratios of monomer to catalyst. The polydispersity index was broad, and the initiation efficiency was relatively low. On the basis of the conformational analysis, the highly active and less controlled polymerization was probably caused by the electronic effect rather than the steric effect on the ferrocene moieties, which led to the higher and lower values in the activation and deactivation steps, respectively. The polydispersity index was improved by the addition of CuBr2, but this led to slower rates of polymerization. The effect of halide groups on ATRP caused a faster rate in the CuBr/TRENFcImine polymerization system than in the CuCl/TRENFcImine system. The higher molar ratio of monomer to catalyst had no significant effect on the CuCl/TRENFcImine system. Nonetheless, the trace of water in the CuCl2·2H2O system accelerated the rate of propagation, which led to a higher molecular weight. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2009 相似文献

The feasibility of high-pressure atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) for synthesizing well-defined polymers of extraordinarily high molecular weights was demonstrated. ATRP of methyl methacrylate (MMA) under pressures up to 500 MPa was investigated at 60 °C. The addition of a small amount of a Cu(II)Cl2/ligand complex along with the general benefits of high pressure of enhancing propagation and suppressing termination brought about an excellent control of polymerization even with an extremely low concentration of ATRP initiator. For example, there was produced PMMA with a number-average molecular weight Mn of 3.6 × 106 and a polydispersity index of 1.24, which had never been achieved by conventional ATRP. 相似文献

9-Amino epi-quinine was used as a ligand in the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) for the first time, and high monomer conversion as well as small polydispersity could be obtained. The 9-amino epi-quinine-containing organosilane was synthesized and immobilized onto three different silica supports, i.e., fumed SiO2, SBA-15, and MCM-48, followed by complexing with CuBr. With the MCM-48 supported catalyst, polymerization of methyl methacrylate achieved high monomer conversion, small polydispersity, and low residual copper content in the product. This heterogeneous catalyst could also be recycled effectively. 相似文献

The synthesis of novel copolymers consisting of a side‐group liquid‐crystalline backbone and poly (methyl methacrylate) grafts were realized by the use of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). In the first stage, the bromine‐functional copolymers 6‐(4‐cyanobiphenyl‐4′‐oxy)hexyl acrylate and (2,5‐dioxo‐2,5‐dihydro‐1H‐pyrrole‐1‐yl)methyl 2‐bromopropanoate were synthesized by free‐radical polymerization. These copolymers were used as initiators in the ATRP of methyl methacrylate to yield graft copolymers. Both the macroinitiator and graft copolymers were characterized by 1H‐NMR, gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis. The ATRP graft copolymerization was supported by an increase in the molecular weight of the graft copolymers compared to that of the macroinitiator and also by their monomodal molecular weight distribution. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Photo‐mediated metal free atom transfer radical polymerization of acrylamide was conducted at 25 °C in water under visible light irradiation with water soluble 2‐hydroxy‐3‐(4‐benzoylphenoxy)‐N,N,N‐trimethyl‐1‐propaminium chloride (HBTPC) as photoredox catalyst and 2‐hydroxyethyl 2‐bromoisobutyrate as alkyl halide. The polymerization followed first‐order reaction kinetics. The living character of photo‐mediated atom transfer radical polymerization of acrylamide was verified by the linear development of the polymer number average molar mass (Mn,GPC) with monomer conversion and narrow molecular weight distributions (?). The effects of acrylamide concentration, light intensity, amount of HBTPC, and tris(2‐dimethylaminoethyl)amine on polymerization were investigated. Increasing monomer concentration led to a higher Mn,GPC values with narrow ?. The polymerization rate increased with increasing the amount of monomer, light intensity, HBTPC and tris(2‐dimethylaminoethyl)amine. The polymerization was monitored by the periodic light on/off. The structure of polyacrylamide was analyzed by proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer and gel permeation chromatography. Pentaerythritol (PT) was converted into four‐arm initiator pentaerythritol tetrakis(2‐chloropropionyl) (PT‐Cl) via reaction with 2‐chloropropionyl chloride. Uniform (monodisperse) star‐polystyrene nanoparticles were prepared by emulsion atom transfer radical polymerization of styrene, using PT‐Cl/CuCl/bpy (bpy is 2,2′‐dipyridyl) as the initiating system. The structures of PT‐Cl and polymer were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance. The morphology, size and size distribution of the star‐polystyrene nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and photon correlation spectroscopy. It was found that the average diameters of star‐polystyrene nanoparticles were smaller than 100 nm (30–90 nm) and monodisperse; moreover, the particle size could be controlled by the monomer/initiator ratio and the surfactant concentration. The average hydrodynamic diameter (Dh) of the nanoparticles increased gradually on increasing the ratio of styrene to PT‐Cl and decreased on enhancing the surfactant concentration or increasing the catalyst concentration. Atom transfer radical polymerization of n‐butyl methacrylate (BMA) was conducted in an aqueous dispersed system with different kinds of copper complexes. The partitioning behavior of the copper complexes, including CuCl/4,4′‐di(5‐nonyl)‐2,2′‐bipydine (dNbpy), CuCl2/dNbpy, CuCl/2,2′‐bipydine (bpy), CuCl2/bpy, CuCl/bis(N,N′‐dimethylaminoethyl)ether (bde), and CuCl2/bde between the monomer (BMA), and water was studied in detail with ultraviolet‐visible spectroscopy. The results show that with a less hydrophobic ligand, such as bpy or bde, most of the Cu(I) or the Cu(II) complexes migrated from the BMA phase to the aqueous phase, the atom transfer equilibrium was destroyed, and the polymerization was nearly not controlled; it converted to classical emulsion polymerization. As to the very hydrophobic ligand dNbpy, although the partitioning study of the copper complexes indicated that not all the copper species were restricted to the organic phase, the linear correlation between the molecular weight and the monomer conversion and the narrow polydispersities confirmed that the polymerization was still quite well controlled. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The emulsion atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of 2-ethylhexyl methacrylate (EHMA) was carried out with ethyl 2-bromoisobutyrate (EBiB) as an initiator and copper bromide (CuBr)/4,4′-dinonyl-2,2′-bipyridyl (dNbpy) as a catalyst system. The effects of surfactant type and concentration, temperature, monomer/initiator ratio, and CuBr2 addition on the system livingness, polymer molecular weight control, and latex stability were examined in detail. It was found that the polymerization systems with Tween 80 and Brij 98 as surfactants at 30 °C gave the best latex stability. The polymer samples prepared under these conditions had narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn=1.1-1.2) and linear relationships of number-average molecular weight versus monomer conversion. 相似文献

In this work the effects of conversion on the apparent catalyst activity in the catalytic chain transfer polymerization of methyl methacrylate are reported. Several mechanisms are discussed that may explain the experimental observations. The discussion is supported with computer simulations using Predici software. It is shown that the experimental decrease in weight average molecular weight with conversion is smaller than the decrease obtained in simulations. The most likely cause for this discrepancy is slow catalyst deactivation. The half‐life of CoBF under the reported conditions was determined to be about 10 h. Furthermore, the effect of acetic acid (HAc) and benzoyl peroxide (BPO) on the evolution of the molecular weight distribution is investigated. Both HAc and BPO enhance catalyst deactivation. For HAc, catalyst deactivation scales with the square root of its concentration. BPO‐ enhanced deactivation depends linearly on its concentration. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two pyridylphosphine ligands, 2-(diphenylphosphino)pyridine (DPPP) and 2-[(diphenylphosphino)methyl]pyridine (DPPMP), were investigated as complexing ligands in the iron-mediated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and styrene with various initiators and solvents. In studies of their ATRP behavior, the FeBr2/DPPP catalytic system was a more efficient ATRP catalyst for the MMA polymerization than the other complexes studied in this paper. Most of these systems were well controlled with a linear increase in the number-average molecular weights (Mn) vs. conversion and relatively low molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn = 1.15-1.3) being observed throughout the reactions, and the measured molecular weights matched the predicted values with the DPPP ligand. The polymerization rate of MMA attained a maximum at a ratio of ligand to metal of 2:1 in p-xylene at 80 °C. The polymerization was faster in polar solvents than in p-xylene. The 2-bromopropionitrile (BPN) initiated ATRP of MMA with the FeX2/DPPP catalytic system (X = Cl, Br) was able to be controlled in p-xylene at 80 °C. The polymerization of styrene was able to be controlled using the PECl/FeCl2/DPPP system in DMF at 110 °C. 相似文献

Poly(n‐butyl methacrylate) (PBMA)‐b‐polystyrene (PSt) diblock copolymers were synthesized by emulsion atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). PBMA macroinitiators that contained alkyl bromide end groups were obtained by the emulsion ATRP of n‐butyl methacrylate with BrCH3CHCOOC2H5 as the initiator; these were used to initiate the ATRP of styrene (St). The latter procedure was carried out at 85°C with CuCl/4,4′‐di(5‐nonyl)‐2,2′‐bipyridine as the catalyst and polyoxyethylene(23) lauryl ether as the surfactant. With this technique, PBMA‐b‐PSt diblock copolymers were synthesized. The polymerization was nearly controlled; the ATRP of St from the macroinitiators showed linear increases in number‐average molecular weight with conversion. The block copolymers were characterized with IR spectroscopy, 1H‐NMR, and differential scanning calorimetry. The effects of the molecular weight of the macroinitiators, macroinitiator concentration, catalyst concentration, surfactant concentration, and temperature on the polymerization were also investigated. Thermodynamic data and activation parameters for the ATRP are also reported. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 98: 2123–2129, 2005 相似文献

Poly(methyl methacrylate)‐block‐polyurethane‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate) tri‐block copolymers have been synthesized successfully through atom transfer radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate using telechelic bromo‐terminated polyurethane/CuBr/N,N,N,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine initiating system. As the time increases, the number‐average molecular weight increases linearly from 6400 to 37,000. This shows that the poly methyl methacrylate blocks were attached to polyurethane block. As the polymerization time increases, both conversion and molecular weight increased and the molecular weight increases linearly with increasing conversion. These results indicate that the formation of the tri‐block copolymers was through atom transfer radical polymerization mechanism. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectral results of the triblock copolymers show that the molar ratio between polyurethane and poly (methyl methacrylate) blocks is in the range of 1 : 16.3 to 1 : 449.4. Differential scanning calorimetry results show Tg of the soft segment at ?35°C and Tg of the hard segment at 75°C. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2008 相似文献
