Polypropylene‐graft‐cardanol (CAPP) was prepared by reactive extrusion with polypropylene (PP) and natural renewable cardanol, which improved the inherent defects of PP such as its chemical inertness and hydrophobicity. Moreover, the cardanol grafted onto PP resolved the degradation of PP during reactive extrusion and use. The effects of reactive extrusion on the change of the molecular structure of PP, the change in the free‐radical concentration during processing, and the compatibilization of CAPP on the PP/polystyrene (PS) composite materials were examined in this study. The constants of the grafting reaction rate at the beginning of reactive extrusion were also deduced. The results show that cardanol was grafted onto PP, and the p–π conjugate system in cardanol was observed to stabilize free radicals. The grafting reaction rate (Rg) at the initial stage of the grafting reaction process was calculated through the equation Rg = kg[M·][Cardanol], where kg is the constant of the apparent grafting reaction rate and [M·] is the concentration of free radicals in the reaction system. kg first increased with the growth of temperature and then began to decrease when the temperature exceeded the critical temperature of 200°C. The mechanical properties showed almost no change after the samples were aged for 72 h. This was due to CAPP, which changed PP/PS to a ductile material from a brittle one. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2014 , 131, 39911.  相似文献

We explored the environmental aging behavior of banana‐fiber‐reinforced phenol formaldehyde (PF) composites. The composites were subjected to water aging, thermal aging, soil burial, and outdoor weathering. The effects of chemical modification and hybridization with glass fibers on the degradability of the composites in different environments were analyzed. The extent of degradation was measured by changes in the weight and tensile properties after aging. Absorbed water increased the weight of water‐aged composites, and chemical treatments and hybridization decreased water absorption. The tensile strength and modulus of the banana/PF composites were increased by water aging, whereas the strength and modulus of the glass/PF composites were decreased by water aging. As the glass‐fiber loading was increased in the hybrid composites, the increase in strength by water aging was reduced, and at higher glass‐fiber loadings, a decrease in strength was observed. The tensile properties of the composites were increased by oven aging. The percentage weight loss was higher for soil‐aged samples than for samples weathered outdoors. The weight loss and tensile strength of the glass/PF composites and banana/glass/hybrid/PF composites were much lower than those of the banana/PF composites. Silane treatment, NaOH treatment, and acetylation improved the resistance of the banana/PF composites on outdoor exposure and soil burial. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Sisal fibers were used for the reinforcement of a polypropylene (pp) matrix. Composites consisting of polypropylene reinforced with short sisal fibers were prepared by melt‐mixing and solution‐mixing methods. A large amount of fiber breakage was observed during melt mixing. The fiber breakage analysis during composite preparation by melt mixing was carried out using optical microscopy. A polynomial equation was used to model the fiber‐length distribution during melt mixing. The experimental mechanical properties of sisal/PP composites were compared with existing theoretical models such as the modified rule of mixtures, parallel and series models, the Hirsch model, and the Bowyer–Baders model. The dependence of the tensile strength on the angle of measurement with respect to fiber orientation also was modeled. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 88: 602–611, 2003  相似文献

Short ramie fiber (RF) was used to reinforce the polypropylene (PP). The composites were prepared in a twin‐screw extruder followed by injection molding. The experimental results showed that both the strength and the modulus of the composites increase considerably with increasing RF content. The tensile strength and flexural strength are as high as 67 and 80 MPa by the incorporation of ramie up to 30 wt %. To the best of our knowledge, this is one of the best results for short natural fiber‐reinforced PP composites. However, the preparation method in this study is more simple and economic. This short RF‐reinforced PP composites extend the application field for short‐nature fiber‐reinforced PP composites. Morphological analysis revealed that it is the high aspect ratio of the fiber and good interfacial compatibility that result in the high performance of the composites. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The use of natural fibers (NFs) in polymer composites for structural applications has increased greatly in the last years, owing to their abundance and biodegradability. In this work, an innovative and simple successive alkali treatment has been developed to improve the mechanical properties of NFs/polypropylene (PP) composites. Three different cellulosic fibers (curauá, jute, and flax) were used, with a fixed proportion of 10 wt %. The fibers were immersed several times in a 5 wt % NaOH solution. Thermogravimetric analysis data showed an improvement in thermal properties of the fibers, as well as the increase of the crystallinity degree was measured by X‐ray diffraction. By Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, disappearance of characteristics peaks of hemicelluloses and lignin was observed. Finally, mechanical behavior of the NF/PP composites was examined, using dynamic mechanical analysis. The results revealed that the curauá/PP mechanical properties were significantly improved, showing the positive effect of the successive alkali treatments. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Composites were prepared with chemically modified banana fibers in polypropylene (PP). The effects of 40‐mm fiber loading and resin modification on the physical, mechanical, thermal, and morphological properties of the composites were evaluated with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Infrared (IR) spectroscopy, and so on. Maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MA‐g‐PP) compatibilizer was used to improve the fiber‐matrix adhesion. SEM studies carried out on fractured specimens indicated poor dispersion in the unmodified fiber composites and improved adhesion and uniform dispersion in the treated composites. A fiber loading of 15 vol % in the treated composites was optimum, with maximum mechanical properties and thermal stability evident. The composite with 5% MA‐g‐PP concentration at a 15% fiber volume showed an 80% increase in impact strength, a 48% increase in flexural strength, a 125% increase in flexural modulus, a 33% increase in tensile strength, and an 82% increase in tensile modulus, whereas the heat deflection temperature increased by 18°C. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This study describes the reinforcement effect of surface modified mullite fibers on the crystallization, thermal stability, and mechanical properties of polypropylene (PP). The nanocomposites were developed using polypropylene‐grafted‐maleic anhydride (PP‐g‐MA) as compatibilizer with different weight ratios (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.5, 5.0, and 10.0 wt %) of amine functionalized mullite fibers (AMUF) via solution blending method. Chemical grafting of AMUF with PP‐g‐MA resulted in enhanced filler dispersion in the polymer as well as effective filler‐polymer interactions. The dispersion of nanofiller in the polymer matrix was identified using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) elemental mapping and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis. AMUF increased the Young's modulus of PP in the nanocomposites up to a 5 wt % filler content, however, at 10 wt % loading, a decrease in the modulus resulted due to agglomeration of AMUF. The impact strength of PP increased simultaneously with the modulus as a function of AMUF content (up to 5 wt %). The mechanical properties of PP‐AMUF nanocomposites exhibited improved thermal performance as compared to pure PP matrix, thus, confirming the overall potential of the generated composites for a variety of structural applications. The mechanical properties of 5 wt % of AMUF filled PP nanocomposite were also compared with PP nanocomposites generated with unmodified MUF and the results confirmed superior mechanical properties on incorporation of modified filler. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The utilization of disposable chopsticks is very popular in Taiwan, China, and Japan and is one of the major sources of waste in these countries. In this study, recycled disposable chopstick fiber was chemically modified. Subsequently, this modified fiber and polypropylene‐graft‐maleic anhydride were added to polypropylene (PP) to form novel fiber‐reinforced green composites. A heat‐deflection temperature (HDT) test showed an increase of approximately 81% for PP with the addition of 60‐phr fibers, and the HDT of the composite could reach up to 144.8°C. In addition, the tensile strength, Young's modulus, and impact strength were 66, 160.3, and 97.1%, respectively, when the composite material was 40‐phr fibers. Furthermore, this type of reinforced PP would be more environmentally friendly than an artificial‐additive‐reinforced one. It could also effectively reduce and reuse the waste of disposable chopsticks and lower the costs of the materials. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2012  相似文献

We investigated the mechanical and physical characteristics of composites composed of polyacetal [alternatively called polyoxymethylene (POM)] and cellulose fiber (CelF) derived from wood pulp [10–52 wt % (9.3–50.1 vol %)] without any fiber surface treatment. The modulus, deflection temperature under load, and thermal conduction coefficient of the POM/CelF composites were effectively enhanced with increasing CelF content, and the composites had an advantage of specific modulus compared to glass fiber (GF)‐filled POM. The flexural modulus of POM/CelF 40 wt % (38.2 vol %) was measured to be about 6 GPa, which was comparable to that of POM/GF 20 wt % (12.1 vol %). In the composites, the CelFs were distributed randomly as monofilaments, and the debonding of the interface between the fibers and POM matrices in the fracture faces was confirmed as less by scanning electron microscopy observation. The POM/CelF composites possessed lower specific wear rates than the POM/GF composites, and they had damping behaviors near that of neat POM. No clear dependence of the melt flow index of the base POM on these characteristics was observed, except on Charpy impact strength. The composites studied here were unique in their performance and ability to be designed in accordance with specific demands, and they could be potential replacements for mineral‐filled and GF‐filled POM composites. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Wheat straw is an abundantly available and potentially valuable biomass that is currently under‐exploited. In this study, the feasibility of using wheat straw as a filler in high‐density polyethylene (HDPE)‐based composites was explored. Straw was treated with the white‐rot fungus Pleurotus ostreatus with the aim of improving adhesion between straw and plastic, and thereby the mechanical properties of the composite. Results indicate that the use of sterilized straw is necessary to inhibit the growth of indigenous organisms that preclude, likely through competition, removal of lignin, and hence, improved bonding between straw and plastic. Light and transmission electron microscopy revealed cell wall modification in sterilized, inoculated straw. Reduced thermal stability of treated straw did not negatively affect the production of injection‐molded straw–plastic composites (SPC). Comparable interfacial adhesion, based on activation energies obtained in dynamic mechanical analysis, was observed in untreated and treated straw‐ and pine‐based thermoplastic composites. The results of this study indicate that wheat straw represents a promising alternative to wood fillers in the production of thermoplastic composites. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The electron‐beam preirradiation and reactive extrusion technologies were used to prepare maleic anhydride (MAH)/vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS)‐co‐grafting polypropylene (PP) as a high‐performance compatibilizer for wood‐flour/PP composites. The grafting content, chemical structure, and crystallization behavior of the compatibilizers were characterized through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and an extraction method. The effects of the compatibilizers on the mechanical properties, water absorption, morphological structure, and torque rheological behavior of the composites were investigated comparatively. The experimental results demonstrate that MAH/VTMS‐g‐PP markedly enhanced the mechanical properties of the composites. Compared with MAH‐g‐PP and VTMS‐g‐PP, MAH/VTMS‐g‐PP clearly showed synergistic effects on the increasing mechanical properties, water absorption, and compatibility of the composites. Scanning electron microscopy further confirmed that the adhesion and dispersion of wood flours in the composites were effectively improved by MAH/VTMS‐g‐PP. These results were also proven by the best water resistance of the wood‐flour/PP composites with MAH/VTMS‐g‐PP. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2011  相似文献

Antimicrobial polypropylene (PP) has been widely used. Its highly effective antimicrobial activities and nonleaching characteristics remain concerns. In this study, polypropylene wax (PPW) grafted with maleic anhydride was first prepared; this was followed by a melting reaction with polyhexamethylene guanidine hydrochloride (PHMG) to obtain antimicrobial PPW [polypropylene wax grafted with polyhexamethylene guanidine hydrochloride (PPW‐g‐PHMG)]. PPW‐g‐PHMG was then melt‐blended with PP to prepare antimicrobial PP. Fourier transform infrared spectra confirmed that PHMG was covalently bonded on the PPW chains, and transmission electron microscopy images showed a uniform distribution of PHMG in the PPW matrix. The resulting antimicrobial PP exhibited excellent antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli. The ring‐diffusion test further disclosed its nonleaching characteristics. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2017 , 134, 44190.  相似文献

The stress relaxation behavior of natural rubber (NR) and its composites reinforced with short coir fibers under tension was analyzed. The rate of stress relaxation was a measure of the increase in the entropy of the compounds: the higher the rate was, the greater the entropy was. At lower strain levels, the relaxation mechanism of NR was independent of strain level. However, the rate of relaxation increased with the strain level. Also, the strain level influenced the rate of stress relaxation considerably in the coir‐reinforced NR composites. However, the relaxation mechanisms of both the unfilled compound and the composite were influenced by the strain rate. The rate of relaxation was influenced by fiber loading and fiber orientation. From the rate of stress relaxation, we found that fiber–rubber adhesion was best in the composite containing fibers subjected to a chemical treatment with alkali, toluene diisocyanate, and NR solutions along with a hexaresorcinol system as a bonding agent. In this study, the stress relaxation curves could not be viewed as segments with varying slopes; however, a multitude of inflection points were observed on the curves. Hence, we propose neither a two‐step nor three‐step mechanism for the coir‐fiber‐reinforced NR composites as reported for some other systems. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. To facilitate the dispersion of single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) into poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), SWCNT were functionalized with a RAFT chain transfer agent, and PMMA was grafted from the SWCNT by reversible addition–fragmentation transfer (RAFT) polymerization to give SWCNT‐g‐PMMA containing 6 wt % PMMA. SWCNT‐g‐PMMA in the form of small bundles was dispersed into PMMA matrices. The SWCNT‐g‐PMMA filler increased the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the composite when the matrix molecular weight Mn was less than the graft molecular weight, but not when the matrix Mn was equal to or greater than the graft Mn. The threshold of electrical conductivity of the composites as a function of weight percent SWCNT increased from 0.2% when matrix Mn was less than graft Mn to about 1% when matrix Mn was greater than graft Mn. Dynamic mechanical analyses of the composites having graft Mn less than or equal to matrix Mn showed broader rubbery plateaus with increased SWCNT content but no significant differences between samples with different grafted PMMAs. The results indicate that lower Mn matrix wets the SWCNT‐g‐PMMA whereas higher Mn matrix does not wet the SWCNT‐g‐PMMA. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. This research work investigates the tensile strength and elastic modulus of the alumina nanoparticles, glass fiber, and carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composites. The first type composites were made by adding 1–5 wt % (in the interval of 1%) of alumina to the epoxy matrix, whereas the second and third categories of composites were made by adding 1–5 wt % short glass, carbon fibers to the matrix. A fourth type of composite has also been synthesized by incorporating both alumina particles (2 wt %) and fibers to the epoxy. Results showed that the longitudinal modulus has significantly improved because of the filler additions. Both tensile strength and modulus are further better for hybrid composites consisting both alumina particles and glass fibers or carbon fibers. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. In this research, fully environment‐friendly, sustainable and biodegradable composites were fabricated, using wheat straw and rice husk as reinforcements for thermoplastics, as an alternative to wood fibers. Mechanical properties including tensile, flexural, and impact strength properties were examined as a function of the amount of fiber and coupling agent used. In the sample preparation, three levels of fiber loading (30, 40, and 50 wt %) and two levels of coupling agent content (0 and 2 wt %) were used. As the percentage of fiber loading increased, flexural and tensile properties increased significantly. Notched Izod results showed a decrease in strength as the percentage of fiber increases. With addition of 50% fiber, the impact strengths decreased to 16.3, 14.4, and 16.4 J/m respectively, for wheat straw‐, rice husk‐, and poplar‐filled composites. In general, presence of coupling agent had a great effect on the mechanical strength properties. Wheat straw‐ and rice husk‐filled composites showed an increase in the tensile and flexural properties with the incorporation of the coupling agent. From these results, we can conclude that wheat straw and rice husk fibers can be potentially suitable raw materials for manufacturing biocomposite products. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR)‐based composites were prepared by incorporating short nylon fibers of different lengths and concentration into the matrix using a two‐roll mixing mill according to a base formulation. The curing characteristics of the samples were studied. The influence of fiber length, loading, and rubber crosslinking systems on the properties of the composites was analyzed. Surface morphology of the composites has been studied using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Addition of nylon fiber to NBR offers good reinforcement, and causes improvement in mechanical properties. A fiber length of 6 mm was found to be optimum for the best balance of properties. It has been found that at higher fiber loadings, composites show brittle‐type behavior. Composites vulcanized by the dicumyl peroxide (DCP) system were found to have better mechanical properties than that by the sulfur system. The swelling behavior of the composites in N,N‐dimethyl formamide has been analyzed for the swelling coefficient values. Composites vulcanized in the DCP system were found to have higher rubber volume fraction than that in the sulfur system, which indicates better rubber–fiber interaction in the former. The crosslink densities of various composites were also compared. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 92: 1023–1030, 2004  相似文献

To improve interactions between fibrous cellulose (FC) and polypropylene (PP), oxidatively degraded polypropylene (DgPP) and maleated polypropylene (MAPP) were studied as compatibilizers. Both compatibilizers had the same mechanism, using esterification between the OH group in FC and the reactive (γ‐lactone, acid, and maleic anhydride) groups in the compatibilizers. However, the adhesion style with the ester bond was considerably different because of the arrangements of the reactive groups. DgPP had reactive groups at the polymer chain end, and the tensile behavior of the FC/PP/DgPP composite exhibited comparatively ductile behavior. However, MAPP had inner reactive groups, and the tensile behavior of the FC/PP/MAPP composite was quite brittle. Observation of these fracture surfaces suggested that the adhesion performance of the interface between FC and PP was strongly influenced by the arrangements of the reactive group. In addition, the performance was influenced by the molecular weight of DgPP and by the content of maleic anhydride groups in MAPP. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2009  相似文献
