Dynamic vulcanization was studied in terms of the change in α‐relaxation temperatures of the LDPE matrix, morphology, and mechanical properties of LDPE/ozonolysed NR blends which were vulcanized at various blend ratios and with different curing systems, i.e., peroxide and sulfur systems. The ozonolysed NR with M w = 8.30 × 105 g mol−1 and M n = 2.62 × 105 g mol−1, prepared by the in situ ozonolysis reaction of natural rubber latex, was used in this study. The significant change in the α‐relaxation temperature of LDPE in the LDPE/ozonolysed NR, dynamically vulcanized using the sulfur system, suggested that sulfur vulcanization of the blend gave a higher degree of crosslink density than using peroxide and corresponded with the improved damping property and homogenous phase morphology. However, the peroxide cured blends of LDPE/ozonolyzed NR gave more improvement of tensile strength and elongation at break than the sulfur cured system. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of tensile strength, elongation at break, and damping were improved by increasing the ozonolyzed natural rubber content in both DCP and sulfur cured blends. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Sulfur can be used as crosslink coagent in unsaturated elastomer. In this work, a fully saturated HNBR with 39 wt % nitrile content was selected to investigate the effect of a small amount of sulfur acting as crosslink coagent on the physical and mechanical properties of peroxide‐cured vulcanizates. First, selective cleavage of polysulfide (? Sx? ) and monosulfide(? S? ) bond by combined thiol‐piperidine treatment were performed and the existence of poly/monosulfide bond in sulfur‐contained HNBR compounds was verified. Then, no‐filler HNBR compounds with various content of sulfur were investigated to detect the influence of sulfur on the crosslink density and cure kinetics. The MDR results showed that the crosslink density of HNBR compounds reduced only when the amount of sulfur is 0.25 phr and above. Besides, the curing rate of no‐filler HNBR compounds increased with the increasing of the amount of sulfur and reached a maximum at a dosage of 0.25 phr sulfur. Finally, physical and mechanical properties of fully formulated compounds were evaluated and it was found that the addition of small amounts of sulfur in fully saturated HNBR compounds could improve the dynamic properties of peroxide‐cured HNBR compounds remarkably but at a cost of slightly higher compression set values and a small loss in heat aging resistance. In a conclusion, small amount of sulfur can impart the peroxide vulcanizates some “sulfide properties” like dynamic property, tensile strength, but at the same time, due to the introduction of sulfur, some “peroxide vulcanizates property” like heat‐resistance property, hot air resistance were weakened slightly. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effects of three curing systems, peroxide, peroxide–phenolic combination, and phenolic on selected properties of cured carbon black‐filled ethylene–propylene–diene monomer rubber (EPDM) were investigated. The cured rubbers immersed in hot amine solution to evaluate their suitability for seal and gasket industry at elevated temperature and amine environments. These tests were essential for evaluating the durability of the gasket in a gas refinery. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy spectrums revealed that the phenolic crosslink was constructed between rubber macromolecules during the curing process. The changing curing system from peroxide to peroxide–phenolic and phenolic increased the glass transition temperature of the filled cured rubbers between 3 and 5 °C. There was not any significant difference between thermogravimetric analysis thermographs of the selected cured rubbers with various cure systems and the residues ranged between 45% and 47%. Unlike of peroxide curing system, a dual phase was observed from scanning electron microscopy micrographs for peroxide–phenolic and phenolic cure systems. The phenolic cure system was not beneficial for rubber curing although, it reduced scorch time of the curing process. For the most studied mechanical properties, phenolic cure system deteriorated mechanical properties for both, aged and unaged cured rubbers. Increasing the amount of diene monomer in EPDM structure was beneficial for phenolic rubber cure system. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2018 , 135, 46213.  相似文献

Simple blending of natural rubber/ethylene–propylene–diene rubber (NR/EPDM) generally results in inferior mechanical properties because of curative migration and their differences for filler affinity. In this work, the 70/30 and 50/50 NR/EPDM blends prepared by reactive processing techniques were investigated and compared with the simple, nonreactive blends. The reactive blend compounds were prepared by preheating EPDM, containing all curatives to a predetermined time related to their scorch time prior to blending with NR. For the 70/30 gum blends, four types of accelerators were studied: 2,2‐mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT), 2,2‐dithiobis‐ (benzothiazole) (MBTS), N‐cyclohexyl‐2‐benzothiazolesulfenamide (CBS), and Ntert‐butyl‐2‐benzothiazolesulfenamide (TBBS). When compared with the simple blends, the reactive blends cured with CBS and MBTS showed a clearly improved tensile strength whereas the increase of tensile strength in the blends cured with TBBS and MBT was marginal. However, a dramatic improvement of ultimate tensile properties in the reactive 50/50 NR/EPDM blends cured with TBBS was observed when compared with the simple blend. For the N‐550‐filled blends at the blend ratios of 70/30 and 50/50, the reactive‐filled blends prepared under the optimized preheating times demonstrated superior tensile strength and elongation at break over the simple blends. The improved crosslink and/or filler distribution between the two rubber phases in the reactive blends accounts for such improvement in their mechanical properties. This is shown in the scanning electron micrographs of the tensile fractured surfaces of the reactive blends, which indicate a more homogeneous blend. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. EPDM incorporated into blends of natural rubber/butadiene rubber (NR/BR) improves ozone resistance. In this work, the inferior mechanical properties of NR/BR/EPDM blends generally obtained by conventional straight mixing are overcome by utilizing a reactive processing technique. The entire amount of curatives, based on a commonly employed accelerator N‐cyclohexyl‐2‐benzothiazole sulfenamide (CBS) and sulfur, is first added into the EPDM phase. After a thermal pretreatment step tuned to the scorch time of the EPDM phase, the modified EPDM is mixed with premasticated NR/BR. The reactive blend vulcanizates show a significant improvement in tensile properties: tensile strength and elongation at break, as compared to those prepared by straight mixing, in both gum and carbon black‐filled blends. The increase of tensile properties in gum and filled reactive blend vulcanizates does suggest that the reactive processing technique leads to more homogeneous blends due to, either a better crosslink distribution, or more homogeneous filler distribution, or both. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The mechanical properties and aging characteristics of blends of ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) rubber and styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) were investigated with special reference to the effect of blend ratio and cross‐linking systems. Among the blends, the one with 80/20 EPDM/SBR has been found to exhibit the highest tensile, tear, and abrasion properties at ambient temperature. The observed changes in the mechanical properties of the blends have been correlated with the phase morphology, as attested by scanning electron micrographs (SEMs). The effects of three different cure systems, namely, sulfur (S), dicumyl peroxide (DCP), and a mixed system consisting of sulfur and peroxide (mixed) on the blend properties also were studied. The stress‐strain behavior, tensile strength, elongation at break, and tear strength of the blends were found to be better for the mixed system. The influence of fillers such as high‐abrasion furnace (HAF) black, general‐purpose furnace (GPF) black, silica, and clay on the mechanical properties of 90/10 EPDM/SBR blend was examined. The ozone and water aging studies also were conducted on the sulfur cured blends, to supplement the results from the mechanical properties investigation. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Considering the properties of silicon rubber, ethylene–propylene–diene monomer (EPDM), and cis‐polybutadiene rubber (BR), a blend made by a new method was proposed in this article; this blend had thermal resistance and good mechanical properties. The morphology of the blend was studied by SEM, and it was found that the adhesion between the phases of BR, EPDM, and polysiloxanes (silicon rubber) could be enhanced, and the compatibility and covulcanization were good. The influence of the mass ratio of peroxide and silica on the mechanical properties and thermal resistance of the blend was studied. The results showed that the mechanical properties and thermal resistance of the blend were improved when silicon rubber/BR/EPDM was 20/30/50, dicumyl peroxide/sulfur was 2.5/2.5, and the amount of silica was 80 phr. The integral properties of rubber blend had more advantages than did the three rubbers. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 101: 4462–4467, 2006  相似文献

The devulcanization reaction of styrene–butadiene rubber (SBR) based ground tire rubber (GTR) in GTR/ethylene–propylene–diene monomer rubber (EPDM) blend was investigated through a compound‐induced reaction by increasing screw rotation speed and being in the presence of subcritical water. The effects of temperature, pressure, screw rotation speed, or promoting agents on the gel content, Mooney viscosity, and Fourier transform infrared spectra of the sol of the devulcanized blends (devulcanized ground tire rubber (DGTR)/EPDM) were measured, and the mechanical properties and microstructures of the revulcanized blend ((DGTR/EPDM)/SBR) were characterized. The results show that subcritical water as a swelling agent and reaction medium promotes the devulcanization reaction, increases the selectivity of the crosslink breakage, keeps the extrusion material from oxidative degradation, reduces the gel particle size of the devulcanized blends, and significantly improves the mechanical properties of the revulcanized SBR/(DGTR/EPDM) blends. In subcritical water, the suitable promoting agents (alkylphenol polysulfide 450, hydrogen peroxide H2O2, or 450/H2O2) accelerate the devulcanization reaction, keep the double bond content, and lead to further decrease of the gel content and Mooney viscosity of the devulcanized blends and further increase of the mechanical properties of the revulcanized SBR/(DGTR/EPDM) blends. Especially the compound promoting agent (450/H2O2) improves the selectivity of the crosslink breakage in devulcanization of SBR‐based GTR. When 450/H2O2 is added as a compound promoting agent at the best reaction condition in subcritical water (200°C, 1.6 MPa and 1000 rpm), the tensile strength and elongation at break of the revulcanized SBR/(DGTR/EPDM) blends reach to 85.4% and 201% of vulcanized SBR (24.0 MPa, 356%), respectively. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The mechanical properties and crosslink density of peroxide‐cured ethylene‐propylene‐diene rubber (EPDM) reinforced with zinc dimethacrylate (ZDMA) were studied. ZDMA was in situ prepared in EPDM matrix through the neutralization reaction of zinc oxide (ZnO) and methacrylate acid (MAA). The effect of ZnO/MAA amount and molar ratio of ZnO/MAA on the properties of the EPDM vulcanizate were investigated in detail. The experimental results showed that EPDM can be greatly reinforced by ZDMA. The excess amount of ZnO considerably increases the tensile strength of the EPDM vulcanizate to reach as high as 37 MPa, whereas its elongation at break keeps over 350%. The process of in situ formation of ZDMA in the EPDM compound was verified by WAXD. Such vulcanizate contains both covalent crosslinks and ionic crosslinks. Crosslink density was determined by an equilibrium swelling method. Dependence of crosslink density on the amount and molar ratio of ZnO/MAA was studied and the extraordinary high tensile strength of the EPDM/ZDMA vulcanizate was related to ionic crosslink density. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The influence of silane coupling agent on properties of silica‐filled compounds under peroxide curing was investigated. bis (triethoxysilylpropyl) tetrasulfide (TESPT) was selected in this study and its content was varied from 0 to 12% w/w of silica. It is found that with increasing TESPT content, bound rubber content, tensile strength, elongation at break and tear strength are enhanced. By contrast, magnitude of Payne's effect, modulus at 100% elongation (M100) and heat build‐up are decreased. The changes of such properties are attributed to the reduction of crosslink density in conjunction with the improvements of both rubber–filler interaction and degree of filler dispersion with increasing TESPT content in the peroxide curing system. Polybutadiene rubber (BR) was blended with ethylene‐propylene diene (EPDM) rubber on rubber mill with different weight ratios (100/0‐70/30‐50/50‐30/70‐0‐100), then application of gamma rays at different irradiation doses from 25 up to 150 kGy to induce crosslinking. Mechanical, physio‐chemical, and characterization of prepared blends are to be followed up as functions of the blend composition and the radiation absorbed dose. Mechanical properties like tensile strength (TS), elongation at break (Eb), and tensile modulus (M100) were increased with increasing content of EPDM in blend composition. On the other hand, TS and M100 increased with radiation dose, whereas the value of Eb decreased with radiation dose. Physico‐chemical properties like gel fraction and volume fraction of rubber in swollen gel (Vr) increased with increasing the content of EPDM rubber in blend formulation while the swelling ratio and soluble fraction decreased with increasing content of EPDM. On the other hand, the Vr increased with radiation dose, whereas the values of soluble fraction and selling ratio (Q) decreased with radiation dose. Fourier transforms‐infrared measurements confirmed the compatibility between BR and EPDM rubber moieties in the blend matrix. J. VINYL ADDIT. It is observed that reclamation of natural rubber latex based rubber using 2,2′‐dibenzamidodiphenyldisulphide as reclaiming agent is an optional methodology for recycling of waste latex rubber (WLR). For progressive replacement of virgin natural rubber by the reclaim, two alternatives curing system were investigated: adjustment or reduction of the curing system with increasing reclaim content, to compensate for the extra amount of curatives brought along by the reclaim. For fixed curing system, as if the reclaim were equivalent to virgin NR. The cure behavior, final crosslink density and distribution, mechanical properties, and dynamic viscoelastic properties of the blends with reclaimed WLR are measured and compared with the virgin compound. The morphology of the blends, sulfur migration, and final distribution are analyzed. The mechanical and dynamic viscoelastic properties deteriorate for both curing systems, but to a lesser extent for fixed curing system compared to adjusted curing system. With the fixed cure system, many properties like tensile strength and compression set do still deteriorate, but tan δ and M300/M100, representative for the rolling resistance of tires are improved. On the other hand, with the adjusted cure system both mechanical and dynamic properties still deteriorate. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 102:4194–4206, 2006  相似文献

The migration of sulfur from natural rubber (NR) compound to the ground waste ethylene‐propylene‐diene monomer (EPDM) rubber phase may have caused the cure incompatibility between these two rubbers. Optimization of accelerators had been adopted to overcome the cure incompatibility in NR/(R‐EPDM) blends as well as to get increased curative distribution. In this study, blends of NR and R‐EPDM were prepared. The effect of accelerator type on curing characteristics, tensile properties, and dynamic mechanical properties of 70/30/NR/(R‐EPDM) blend was investigated. Four types of commercial accelerators were selected [ie, N‐tert‐butyl‐2‐benzothiazyl‐sulphonamide , N‐cyclohexyl‐benzothiazyl‐sulfenamide (CBS), tetramethylthiuram disulfide, and 2‐mercaptobenzothiazol]. It was found that the tensile strength of the blends cured in the presence of CBS was relatively higher than the other three accelerators. Scanning electron micrographs of CBS‐cured NR/(R‐EPDM) blends exhibited more roughness and cracking path, indicating that higher energy was required toward the fractured surface. The high crosslinking density observed from the swelling method could be verified from the storage modulus (E′) and damping factor (tan δ) where (tetramethylthiuram disulfide)‐cured NR/(R‐EPDM) blends provided a predominant degree of crosslinking followed by N‐tert‐butyl‐2‐benzothiazyl‐sulphonamide , CBS, and 2‐mercaptobenzothiazol, respectively. ABSTRACT

This article discusses some properties such as tensile properties, chemical and oil resistance, gel content, crystallinity, and morphology of polypropylene (PP)/ethylene-propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM)/natural rubber (NR) blends. Dicumyl peroxide (DCP) was applied as a crosslinking agent. In terms of tensile properties, peroxide vulcanized blend shows higher tensile strength and tensile modulus (stress at 100% elongation, M100) as compared with the unvulcanized blend. The elongation at break of the peroxide vulcanized blend is higher for the blend with NR rich content compared with the EPDM rich content. The improvements in chemical and oil resistance as well as gel content of peroxide vulcanized blends have also proved the formation of crosslinks in the rubber phase. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs from the surface extraction of the blends support that the crosslinks have occurred during dynamic vulcanization. Dynamical vulcanization with DCP has decreased the percent crystallinity of blends that can be attributed to the formation of crosslinks in the rubber.  相似文献

The mechanical properties, flame retardancy, hot‐air ageing, and hot‐oil ageing resistance of ethylene‐vinyl acetate rubber (EVM)/hydrogenated nitrile‐butadiene rubber (HNBR)/magnesium hydroxide (MH) composites were studied. With increasing HNBR fraction, elongation at break and tear strength of the EVM/HNBR/MH composites increased, whereas the limited oxygen index and Shore A hardness decreased slightly. Hot‐air ageing resistance and hot‐oil ageing resistance of the composites became better with increasing HNBR fraction. Thermal gravimetric analysis results demonstrated that the presence of MH and low HNBR fraction could improve the thermal stability of the composites. Differential scanning calorimeter revealed that the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the composites shifted toward low temperatures with increasing HNBR fraction, which was also confirmed by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. Atomic force microscope images showed MH has a small particle size and good dispersion in the composites with high HNBR fraction. The flame retardancy, extremely good hot‐oil ageing, and hot‐air ageing resistance combined with good mechanical properties performance in a wide temperature range (?30°C to 150°C) make the EVM/HNBR/MH composites ideal for cables application. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This research studied the composition and behavior of natural rubber (NR) and ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) blends at various carbon black concentrations (0–30 phr) in terms of electrical resistivity, dielectric breakdown voltage testing, and physical properties. The blends having electrical properties suitable for application in high‐insulation iron crossarms were selected for investigation of compatibility and increased physical properties. The effect of the homogenizing agent concentration on improvement of compatibility of blends was studied by scanning electron microscopy, pulsed nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and rheology techniques. We also examined mechanical properties such as tensile strength, tear strength, elongation at break, and hardness. The NR/EPDM blends filled with a fixed concentration of silica were investigated for ozone resistance. A carbon black content as high as 10 phr is still suitable for the insulation coating material, which can withstand electrical voltage at 10 kVac. Addition of the homogenizing agent at 5 phr can improve the mechanical compatibility of blends, as evidenced by the positive deviation of shear viscosity of the rubber blend, that is, the calculated shear viscosity being higher than that of experimental data. Moreover, the pulsed NMR results indicated that the spin‐spin relaxation (T2) of all three components of the rubber blend was compressed upon the addition of the homogenizing agent. The ratio of NR/EPDM in the blend to best resist the ozone gas is 80/20 with the addition of silica of 30 phr into the blend. Also, the NR/EPDM filled with silica had a decreased change in thermal and mechanical properties of blends after thermal aging. The synergistic effect of silica content and high NR content (80) in 20 phr EPDM could improve antioxidation by ozone in the absence of a normal antioxidant for natural rubber. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
