Polyamines are rare in literature owing to increased reactivity, sensitivity to air and moisture, low stability, and processing difficulties. Here, we report the synthesis and characterization of highly processable polyamines and use them for the removal of dissolved metallic nanoparticles from water. Three amphiphilic block polyamines such as poly(N‐aminoethyl acrylamide‐b‐styrene), poly(N‐aminopropyl acrylamide‐b‐styrene), and poly(N‐aminoxylyl acrylamide‐b‐styrene) have been synthesized using atom transfer radical polymerization of ethyl acrylate and styrene followed by aminolysis of the acrylic block. The polymerization and properties of the polymers are studied using different physicochemical techniques. Surface morphology of films prepared from these block copolymers by dissolving in different solvents such as chloroform, tetrahydrofuran and N,N‐dimethylformamide, and drop‐casting polymers on a glass substrate show interesting porous films and spherical nanostructures. In addition, the amine‐functionalized block copolymers have been used for the removal of nanoparticles from water and show high extraction efficiency toward silver (Ag) and gold (Au) nanoparticles. All three amine‐functionalized block copolymers show higher extraction capacities (Qe) toward Au NPs (50–109 mg g?1) and Ag NPs (99–117 mg g?1). Our approach allows us to make amine‐functionalized block copolymers which are stable in air and can be easily processed in nonpolar solvents. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Autopolymerization of styrene‐N‐butylmaleimide mixtures at 125 or 140°C in the presence of a stable nitroxyl radical [2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidin‐1‐yloxyl (TEMPO)] was found to proceed in a pseudoliving manner. Unimolecular initiators, which were originated by trapping self‐generated radical species with TEMPO, took part in the process. Under the studied experimental conditions, the TEMPO‐controlled autopolymerization with a varying comonomer ratio provided virtually alternating copolymers of narrow molecular weight distributions. The molecular weights of the copolymers increased with conversions. The obtained styrene‐N‐butylmaleimide copolymers containing TEMPO end groups were used to initiate the polymerization of styrene. The polymerization yielded poly(styrene‐coN‐butylmaleimide)‐polystyrene block copolymers with various polystyrene chain lengths and narrow molecular weight distributions. The compositions, molecular weights, and molecular weight distributions of the synthesized block copolymers and the initial poly(styrene‐coN‐butylmaleimide) precursors were evaluated using nitrogen analysis, gel permeation chromatography, and 1H‐ and 13C‐NMR spectroscopy. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Block copolymers, polystyrene‐b‐poly(styrene‐co‐maleic anhydride), have been prepared by reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization technique using three different approaches: 1‐phenylethyl phenyldithioacetate (PEPDTA) directly as RAFT agent, mediated polystyrene (PS) block as the macromolecular PS‐RAFT agent and mediated poly(styrene‐maleic anhydride) (SMA) block with alternating sequence as the macromolecular SMA‐RAFT agent. Copolymers synthesized in the one‐step method using PEPDTA as RAFT agent possess one PS block and one SMA block with gradient structure. When the macromolecular RAFT agents are employed, copolymers with one PS block and one alternating SMA block can be produced. However, block copolymers with narrow molecular weight distribution (MWD) can only be obtained using the PS‐RAFT agent. The MWD deviates considerably from the typical RAFT polymerization system when the SMA is used as the RAFT agent. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2011  相似文献

BACKGROUND: In a number of studies it has been shown that 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidinooxy (TEMPO)‐mediated polymerization of acrylates is not facile. Therefore, the object of the study reported here was to prepare poly[styrene‐block‐(tert‐butyl acrylate)] (PS‐b‐PtBA) block copolymers using 4‐oxo‐TEMPO‐capped polystyrene macroinitiator as an initiator, in the presence of small amounts of N,N‐dimethylformamide (DMF). The kinetic analysis and the effect of DMF on the reaction mechanism are also discussed. RESULTS: PS‐b‐PtBA block copolymer was prepared through polymerization of tert‐butyl acrylate (tBA) initiated by 4‐oxo‐TEMPO‐capped polystyrene macroinitiator at 135 °C. The polymerization rate of tBA could be increased by adding a small amount of DMF, and the number average molecular weight of the PtBA block in PS‐b‐PtBA reached 10 000 g mol?1 with narrow polydispersity. The activation rate constant kact?tBA of alkoxyamine increased and the recombination rate constant krec?tBA decreased with increasing DMF concentration. CONCLUSION: DMF was shown to be a rate‐enhancing additive for the polymerization of tBA using a 4‐oxo‐TEMPO‐capped polystyrene macroinitiator. From the kinetic analysis, it was concluded that the improvement of polymerization with the addition of DMF was due to an increase in kact?tBA and a decrease in krec?tBA. Summary: Coupling reactions between terminal functionalized polymer chains were chosen for the synthesis of star‐like polymers consisting of polystyrene and polystyrene‐block‐poly[styrene‐co‐(butyl acrylate)] arms. For the preparation of terminal functionalized polymer chains a side reaction of the 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine‐N‐oxyl (TEMPO) mediated free radical polymerization of methacrylates could be used successfully to convert TEMPO terminated polymers into end functionalized polymers. The number of functionalized monomer units attached to the polymer chain is directly related to the TEMPO concentration during this reaction. Different polystyrenes and polystyrene‐block‐poly[styrene‐co‐(butyl acrylate)] block copolymers were functionalized with a variable number of epoxide and alcohol groups at the chain end. For the determination of the optimal reaction parameters for the coupling reactions between these polymer chains, epoxy functionalized polystyrenes were converted with hydroxy functionalized polystyrenes under basic and acidic conditions. By activation with sodium hydride or boron trifluoride star‐like polymers were synthesized under mild conditions. The transfer of the reaction conditions to coupling reactions between end functionalized polystyrene‐block‐poly[styrene‐co‐(butyl acrylate)] copolymers showed that star‐like polymers with more than 12 arms were formed using boron trifluoride as activating agent.

Amphiphilic copolymers of poly(styrene‐co‐2‐hydroxyethyl acrylate) (SHEA) and poly(styrene‐coN, N‐dimethylacrylamide) (SAD) of different compositions were prepared by free radical copolymerization and characterized by different techniques. Depending on the nature of the solvent and the densities of interacting species incorporated within the polystyrene matrices, novel materials as blends or interpolymer complexes with properties different from those of their constituents were elaborated when these copolymers are mixed together. The specific interpolymer interactions of hydrogen bonding type and the phase behavior of the elaborated materials were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Fourier transform infra red spectroscopy (FTIR). The specific interactions of hydrogen bonding type that occurred within the SHEA and within their blends with the SAD were evidenced by FTIR qualitatively by the appearance of a new band at 1626 cm?1 and quantitatively using appropriate spectral curve fitting in the carbonyl and amide regions. The variation of the glass transition temperature with the blend composition behaved differently with the densities of interacting species. The thermal degradation behavior of the materials was studied by thermogravimetry. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2008  相似文献

A family of new polymers based on poly(4‐(1‐hydroxyalkyl)styrene), and its copolymers with styrene were synthesized and thoroughly characterized by 1H‐NMR, 13C‐NMR, FTIR, and UV spectroscopies. The chemical modification reactions of polystyrene (PS) was used as a novel method of performing the synthesis of poly(4‐(1‐hydroxyethyl‐co‐styrene)), poly(4‐(1‐hydroxypropyl‐co‐styrene)), poly(4‐(1‐hydroxybutyl‐co‐styrene)), and poly(4‐(1‐hydroxyphenylmethyl‐co‐styrene)). The novelty of this method lies in the incorporation of the desired mol % of the functional groups in polystyrene chain, to obtain random copolymers of desired composition. In preliminary testing/evaluation studies the utility and versatility of the new copolymers, which have the potential to be negative‐tone photoresist materials, were studied. Thus a few photoresist formulations based on poly(styrene‐co‐4‐(1‐hydroxyalkylstyrene)) were developed with 5 wt % of a photoacid generator. These studies suggested that the new copolymers synthesized by a simple and alternate method could have the same potential as a photoresist material when compared with the polymers synthesized by the polymerization of the corresponding functional monomer. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Mono‐ and bifunctional poly(phenylene oxide) (PPO) macroinitiators for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) were prepared by esterification of mono‐ and bishydroxy telechelic PPO with 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide. The macroinitiators were used for ATRP of styrene to give block copolymers with PPO and polystyrene (PS) segments, namely PPO‐block‐PS and PS‐block‐PPO‐block‐PS. Various ligands were studied in combination with CuBr as ATRP catalysts. Kinetic investigations revealed controlled polymerization processes for certain ligands and temperature ranges. Thermal analysis of the block copolymers by means of DSC revealed only one glass transition temperature as a result of the compatibility of the PS and PPO chain segments and the formation of a single phase; this glass transition temperature can be adjusted over a wide temperature range (ca 100–199 °C), depending on the composition of the block copolymer. Amphiphilic block comb‐shaped copolymers, poly[poly(ethylene oxide) methyl ether acrylate]‐block‐polystyrene [P(A‐MPEO)‐block‐PSt] with PSt as a handle, were successfully synthesized via a macromonomer technique. The reaction of MPEO with acryloyl chloride yielded a macromonomer, A‐MPEO. The macroinitiator PSt capped with the dithiobenzoate group (PSt‐SC(S)Ph) was prepared by reversible addition–fragmentation transfer (RAFT) polymerization of styrene in the presence of benzyl dithiobenzoate, and used as macroinitiator in the controlled radical block copolymerization of A‐MPEO at room temperature under 60Co irradiation. After the unreacted macromonomer A‐MPEO had been removed by washing with hot saturated saline water, block comb‐shaped copolymers were obtained. Their structure was characterized by 1H NMR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography. The phase transition and self‐assembling behaviour were investigated by atomic force microscope and differential scanning calorimetry. Copyright © 2004 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Previously, star polystyrenes (PSs) have been prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of N‐[2‐(2‐bromoisobutyryloxy)ethyl]maleimide (BiBEMI) with a large excess of styrene (St) in one pot. But linear PSs were also present during the formation of the star polymers. In the work reported here, we found that control of the formation of star polymers using a one‐pot approach can be improved by using a two‐step process. The polymerization was conducted first at a low temperature to form multifunctional cores by copolymerization of BiBEMI and St. Second, on increasing the temperature, homopolymerization of St occurred to grow PS arms. Then a series of amphiphilic star polystyrene‐block‐poly(acrylic acid)s, (S14Ax)16, were prepared by ATRP of tert‐butyl acrylate with the star PSs as macroinitiators, followed by selective acidolysis of the poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) blocks. Their micellization was studied using dynamic light scattering, which suggested that (S14A112)16 amphiphilic star block copolymers could form unimolecular micelles in a basic aqueous solution. Then pyrene molecules were encapsulated using the (S14A112)16 amphiphilic star copolymers and the loading capacity was investigated with UV and fluorescence spectroscopy. © 2013 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Reverse iodine transfer polymerizations (RITP) of 2‐h‐ydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA) were performed in N,N‐dimethylformamide at 75°C using AIBN as initiator. Poly(2‐hydroxyethyl acrylate) (PHEA) with Mn = 3300 g mol?1 and Mw/Mn <1.5 were obtained. Homopolymerization of styrene in RITP was also carried out under similar conditions using toluene as solvent. The resulting iodo‐polystyrene (PS‐I) with (Mn, SEC = 607 g mol?1, polydispersity index (PDI) = 1.31) was used as a macroinitiator for the synthesis of amphiphilic block copolymers based on HEA with controlled well‐defined structure. Poly(styrene‐b‐2‐hydroxyethyl acrylate) (PS‐b‐PHEA) with Mn = 13,000 g mol?1 and polydispersity index (Mw/Mn) = 1.4 was obtained, copolymer composition was characterized using 1H‐NMR and FTIR, whereas SEC and gradient HPLC were used to confirm the formation of block copolymer and the living character of polymer chains. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. One‐step synthesis of star copolymers by reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) and ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) by using a novel dual initiator is reported. Triarm block copolymers comprising one polystyrene (or polyacrylamide) arm and two poly(β‐butyrolactone) arms were synthesized in one‐step by simultaneous RAFT polymerization of styrene (St) (or acrylamide, designated as AAm) and ROP of β‐butyrolactone (BL) in the presence of a novel trifunctional initiator, 1,2‐propanediol ethyl xanthogenate (RAFT‐ROP agent). This dual initiator was obtained through the reaction of 3‐chloro‐1,2‐propanediol with the potassium salt of ethyl xanthogenate. The principal parameters such as monomer concentration, initiator concentration, and polymerization time that affect the one‐step polymerization reaction were evaluated. The characterization of the products was achieved using Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), 1H‐nuclear magnetic resonance (1H‐NMR), 13C‐nuclear magnetic resonance (13C‐NMR), Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS), gel‐permeation chromatography (GPC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and fractional precipitation (γ) techniques. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate and N‐isopropyl acrylamide was block grafted onto the polypropylene macroporous membrane surface by photo‐induced reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) radical polymerization with benzyl dithiobenzoate as the RAFT agent. The degree of grafting of poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) on the membrane surface increased with UV irradiation time and decreased with the chain transfer agent concentration increasing. The poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate)‐ grafted membranes were used as macro chain transfer agent for the further block graft copolymerization of N‐isopropyl acrylamide in the presence of free radical initiator. The degree of grafting of poly(N‐isopropyl acrylamide) increased with reaction time. Furthermore, the poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate)‐ grafted membrane with a degree of grafting of 0.48% (wt) showed the highest relative pure water flux and the best antifouling characteristics of protein dispersion. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Narrow‐disperse and monodisperse cross‐linked core–shell polymer particles containing different functional groups, such as esters, hydroxyls, chloromethyls, carboxylic acids, amides, cyanos, and glycidyls, in the shell layers in the micrometer size range were prepared by a two‐stage precipitation polymerization in the absence of any stabilizer. Commercial divinylbenzene (DVB), containing 80% DVB, was precipitation polymerized in acetonitrile without any stabilizer as the first‐stage polymerization and was used as the core. Several functional monomers, including methyl methacrylate, ethyl methacrylate, butyl methacrylate, 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate, glycidyl methacrylate, methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, butyl acrylate, t‐butyl acrylate, i‐octyl acrylate, acrylic acid, acrylamide, acrylonitrile, styrene, and p‐chloromethyl styrene, were incorporated into the shells during the second‐stage polymerization. The resulting core–shell polymer particles were characterized with scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT) was developed for the controlled preparation of polystyrene (PS)/poly(4‐vinylpyridine) (P4VP) triblock copolymers. First, PS and P4VP homopolymers were prepared using dibenzyl trithiocarbonate as the chain transfer agent (CTA). Then, PS‐b‐P4VP‐b‐PS and P4VP‐b‐PS‐b‐P4VP triblock copolymers were synthesized using as macro‐CTA the obtained homopolymers PS and P4VP, respectively. The synthesized polymers had relatively narrower molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn < 1.25), and the polymerization was controlled/living. Furthermore, the polymerization rate appeared to be lower when styrene was polymerized using P4VP as the macro‐CTA, compared with polymerizing 4‐vinylpyridine using PS as the macro‐CTA. This was attributed to the different transfer constants of the P4VP and PS macro‐CTAs to the styrene and the 4‐vinylpyridine, respectively. The aggregates of the triblock copolymers with different compositions and chain architectures in water also were investigated, and the results are presented. Reducing the P4VP block length and keeping the PS block constant favored the formation of rod aggregates. Moreover, the chain architecture in which the P4VP block was in the middle of the copolymer chain was rather favorable to the rod assembly because of the entropic penalty associated with the looping of the middle‐block P4VP to form the aggregate corona and tailing of the end‐block PS into the core of the aggregates. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This paper introduces the new synthetic methodology of polyolefin-based block and graft copolymers with polar segments [e.g., polystyrene and poly(meth)acrylates]. Various brominated polyolefins were prepared by bromination of polyolefins with N-bromosuccinimide. The resulting brominated polyolefins were able to initiate the controlled radical polymerization of polar monomers, such as methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate, t-butyl acrylate, styrene and 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl acrylate, using a CuBr/N,N,N′,N″,N″-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine catalyst system, leading to a variety of polyolefin-based copolymers with a different content of the corresponding polar segment. Because of the accessible synthesis of polyolefin macroinitiators, this synthetic methodology is expected to result in the preparation of a wide range of polyolefin-based block and graft copolymers.  相似文献

Several acrylic copolymers containing, at random, sequences of poly(ethyl acrylate) and poly(N-(2-hydroxyethyl)acrylamide) were obtained from ethyl acrylate as the only monomer starting material in a chain polymerization process, catalyzed by Candida antarctica lipase B. In the presence of ethanolamine, the enzyme not only catalyzes the chain polymerization of ethyl acrylate but also aminolysis the pendant ester groups. The products, characterized by FTIR, 1H and 13C NMR and UV-MALDI-TOF-MS, show low molecular weight and high monodispersity. The activity showed by C. antarctica lipase B in the polymerization reaction is a new example of enzyme promiscuity.  相似文献

Poly(butyl acrylate‐g‐styrene) graft copolymers were prepared by free‐radical polymerization using a polystyrene macromonomer carrying a methacryloyloxy group at the chain end and they were characterized by size‐exclusion chromatography, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Glass transition temperatures and degradation behavior were determined by thermal analysis. Only a single glass transition temperature was observed for the resulting graft copolymers, indicating the miscibility between the poly(styrene) phase and poly(butyl acrylate) (pBA) phase in the graft copolymer. The incorporation of polystyrene segments in the graft copolymer improved the thermal stability of pBA and enhanced the apparent activation energy for the thermal degradation of pBA. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Polydimethylsiloxane‐block‐polystyrene‐block‐polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS‐b‐PS‐b‐PDMS) was synthesized by the radical polymerization of styrene using a polydimethylsiloxane‐based macroazoinitiator (PDMS MAI) in supercritical CO2. PDMS MAI was synthesized by reacting hydroxy‐terminated PDMS and 4,4′‐azobis(4‐cyanopentanoyl chloride) (ACPC) having a thermodegradable azo‐linkage at room temperature. The polymerization of styrene initiated by PDMS MAI was investigated in a batch system using supercritical CO2 as the reaction medium. PDMS MAI was found to behave as a polyazoinitiator for radical block copolymerization of styrene, but not as a surfactant. The response surface methodology was used to design the experiments. The parameters used were pressure, temperature, PDMS MAI concentration and reaction time. These parameters were investigated at three levels (?1, 0 and 1). The dependent variable was taken as the polymerization yield of styrene. PDMS MAI and PDMS‐b‐PS‐b‐PDMS copolymers obtained were characterized by proton nuclear magnetic resonance and infrared spectroscopy. The number‐ and weight‐average molecular weights of block copolymers were determined by gel permeation chromatography. Copyright © 2004 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

A new ion‐exchange membrane was prepared by blending a copolymer of poly(styrene sulfonic acid‐coN‐(2‐hydroxyethyl) acrylamide) with poly(vinylidene fluoride). The dissolution of the copolymer into water was prevented by the crosslinked network formed by condensation reaction between N‐(2‐hydoroxyethyl) acrylamide (HEAA) units. The reaction was caused after film‐forming the blend. Swellability in water, ion‐exchange capacity, ion conductivity, and mechanical properties of the membrane were investigated and compared with those of a well‐known ion‐exchange membrane, Nafion 117. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
