Preparation of pure polysulfone (PSf) membrane for CO2/CH4 separation was aimed in this study. Accordingly, the effects of different variables such as: type and concentration of alcohol as external nonsolvent in the coagulation bath, solvent type in the casting solution and also presence of butanol (BuOH) as internal nonsolvent in polymer solution were examined. CO2 and CH4 permeabilities of prepared membranes in different coagulation baths follow this order: ethanol‐50% (EtOH‐50%) > isopropyl alcohol‐50% (IPA‐50%) > ethanol‐100% (EtOH‐100%) > IPA‐100%. According to scanning electron microscopy photographs, membrane asymmetry decreased in higher concentration of alcohols and a high symmetric membrane was prepared using IPA‐100% as external nonsolvent. CO2/CH4 selectivity improved in the following order: IPA‐100% > EtOH‐100% > IPA‐50% > EtOH‐50%. Then, a high CO2/CH4 selectivity (36.40) was obtained employing pure IPA in coagulation bath. When a mixture of NMP/THF was used instead of NMP as solvent, CO2/CH4 selectivity increased from 7.10 to 18.50. Thickness of membranes decreased from 124.70 to 72.11 μm by addition of BuOH concentration from 0 to 10 wt% as internal nonsolvent. Consequently, an enhancement in gas permeability was observed in higher BuOH concentrations. POLYM. ENG. SCI., 54:1686–1694, 2014. © 2013 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

Asymmetric polysulfone (PSF) membrane was developed and modified to PSF/polydimethylsiloxane (PSF/PDMS) composite membrane by dip coating technique. Effect of PDMS coating time on membrane properties was examined by scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, attenuated total reflectance‐Fourier transform infrared, and water contact angle. The increase in PDMS coating time resulted in a decrement in the thermal strength of PSF membrane. Surface contact angle values revealed that increase in PDMS coating time had increased the surface hydrophobicity in membranes. CO2/CH4 separation performance of membranes was evaluated, and an increase in CO2/CH4 ideal selectivity was observed with the increase of PDMS coating time. At feed pressure of 10 bar, the selectivity of PSF has increased up to 65% after dip coating with PDMS for 30 min. Modification of polymeric membrane into composite membrane provided a way forward towards the enhancement of gas separation performance in polymeric membranes. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. This study is focused on the development of ionic liquids (ILs) based polymeric membranes for the separation of carbon dioxide (CO2) from methane (CH4). The advantage of ILs in selective CO2 absorption is that it enhances the CO2 selective separation for the ionic liquid membranes (ILMs). ILMs are developed and characterized with two different ILs using the solution‐casting method. Three different blend compositions of ILs and polysulfone (PSF) are selected for each ILMs 10, 20, and 30 wt %. Effect of the different types of ILs such as triethanolamine formate (TEAF) and triethanolamine acetate (TEAA) are investigated on PSF‐based ILMs. Field emission scanning electron microscopy analysis of the membranes showed reasonable homogeneity between the ILs and PSF. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that by increasing the ILs loading thermal stability of the membranes improved. Mechanical analysis on developed membranes showed that ILs phase reduced the amount of plastic flow of the PSF phase and therefore, fracture takes place at gradually lower strains with increasing ILs content. Gas permeation evaluation was carried out on the developed membranes for CO2/CH4 separation between 2 bar to 10 bar feed pressure. Results showed that CO2 permeance increases with the addition of ILs 10–30 wt % in ILMs. With 20–30 wt % TEAF‐ILMs and TEAA‐ILMs, the highest selectivity of a CO2/CH4 53.96 ± 0.3, 37.64 ± 0.2 and CO2 permeance 69.5 ± 0.6, 55.21 ± 0.3 is observed for treated membrane at 2–10 bar. The selectivity using mixed gas test at various CO2/CH4 compositions shows consistent results with the ideal gas selectivity. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Cellulose hollow fiber membranes (CHFM) were prepared using a spinning solution containing N‐methylmorpholine‐N‐oxide as solvent and water as a nonsolvent additive. Water was also used as both the internal and external coagulant. It was demonstrated that the phase separation mechanism of this system was delayed demixing. The CHFM was revealed to be homogeneously dense structure after desiccation. The gas permeation properties of CO2, N2, CH4, and H2 through CHFM were investigated as a function of membrane water content and operation pressure. The water content of CHFM had crucial influence on gas permeation performance, and the permeation rates of all gases increased sharply with the increase of membrane water content. The permeation rate of CO2 increased with the increase of operation pressure, which has no significant effect on N2, H2, and CH4. At the end of this article a detailed comparison of gas permeation performance and mechanism between the CHFM and cellulose acetate flat membrane was given. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The development of desirable chemical structures and properties in nanocomposite membranes involve steps that need to be carefully designed and controlled. This study investigates the effect of adding multiwalled nanotubes (MWNT) on a Kapton–polysulfone composite membrane on the separation of various gas pairs. Data from Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy confirm that some studies on the Kapton–polysulfone blends are miscible on the molecular level. In fact, the results indicate that the chemical structure of the blend components, the Kapton–polysulfone blend compositions, and the carbon nanotubes play important roles in the transport properties of the resulting membranes. The results of gas permeability tests for the synthesized membranes specify that using a higher percentage of polysulfone (PSF) in blends resulted in membranes with higher ideal selectivity and permeability. Although the addition of nanotubes can increase the permeability of gases, it decreases gas pair selectivity. Furthermore, these outcomes suggest that Kapton–PSF membranes with higher PSF are special candidates for CO2/CH4 separation compared to CO2/N2 and O2/N2 separation. High CH4, CO2, N2, and O2 permeabilities of 0.35, 6.2, 0.34, and 1.15 bar, respectively, are obtained for the developed Kapton–PSF membranes (25/75%) with the highest percentage of carbon nanotubes (8%), whose values are the highest among all the resultant membranes. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Integrally skinned asymmetric gas separation membranes of polyethersulfone (PES)/polyurethane (PU) blend were prepared using supercritical CO2 (SC-CO2) as a nonsolvent for the polymer solution. The membrane consisted of a dense and a porous layer, which were conjoined to separate CO2 from CH4. The FTIR, DSC, tensile and SEM tests were performed to study and characterize the membranes. The results revealed that an increase in SC-CO2 temperature causes an increment in permeance and a decrease in membrane selectivity. Furthermore, by raising the pressure, both permeance and selectivity increased. The modified membrane with SC-CO2 had much higher selectivity, about 5.5 times superior to the non-modified membrane. This higher selectivity performance compared to previous works was obtained by taking the advantages of both using partial miscible blend polymer due to the strong polar–polar interaction between PU PES and SC-CO2 to fabricate the membrane. The response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to find the relationships between several explanatory variables and CO2 and CH4 permeance and CO2/CH4 selectivity as responses. Finally, the results were validated with the experimental data, which the model results were in good agreement with the available experimental data.  相似文献

A facilitated transport polyamide (PA) membrane was developed for gas separation by interfacial polymerization reaction of piperazine (PIP) and isophthaloyl chloride (IPC) supported on polysulfone (PSF) membrane previously prepared by dry/wet phase inversion method. The properties of the prepared membranes were characterized by SEM, FT-IR, TGA, and XRD. SEM images showed that a defect-free PSF, and rough PA membranes were fabricated, while the FT-IR spectra confirmed the formation of PA layer on top of the PSF support. The separation performance of the thin film PA and PSF membranes was evaluated using four gasses (CO2, CH4, N2, and O2). Compared to the PSF membrane, the PA membrane demonstrated an increased selectivity of CO2/CH4 and CO2/N2 by 178%, 169%, respectively. This improvement was attributed to the presence of amine functional groups, which acted as a fixed carrier to facilitate the transport of CO2 gas across the membrane. However, building the PA layer on top of PSF support reduced the membrane permeance of CO2 from 2.41 to 2.12 GPU as a result of the increased mass transfer resistance. Furthermore, the effect of operating temperature and pressure on the separation performance of the membranes was investigated.  相似文献

Asymmetric polysulfone (PSF) gas separation membranes were prepared at different conditions such as non‐solvent concentration, evaporation time (ET) and coagulation bath temperature (CBT). In addition, effects of low‐pressure DC glow discharge plasma on the characteristics of PSF membranes were investigated. PSF membranes both before and after plasma treatment were characterized by several techniques, including contact angle measurement, scanning electron microscope (SEM), dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Furthermore, the performance of membranes was evaluated in terms of permeability of CO2, CH4, O2, and N2 gases. The ideal selectivity of CO2/CH4 and O2/N2 and surface free energy was calculated. Results showed that the EtOH concentration, ET and CBT affect the morphology of PSF membranes. For membranes prepared from a casting solution consisting of PSF 26.0, NMP 28.0, THF 28.0, and EtOH 18.0 wt % and ET for 3 min, the maximum selectivity of untreated membrane is about 69.76 and 12.59 for CO2/CH4 and O2/N2, respectively. After plasma treatment, the ideal selectivity is receded; however, the CO2/CH4 is still higher than 40.41 at pressure of 5 bars. Finally, preparation conditions and DC glow discharge plasmas have significant effects on the characteristics of the PSF membranes and result in an increase of the gas permeation. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polymer blending as a modification technique is a useful approach for augmenting the gas‐separation and permeation properties of polymeric membranes. Polysulfone (PSF)/poly(ether sulfone) (PES) blend membranes with different blend ratios were synthesized by conventional solution casting and solvent evaporation technique. The synthesized membranes were characterized for miscibility, morphology, thermal stability, and spectral properties by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), field emission scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, respectively. The permeation of pure CO2 and CH4 gases was recorded at a feed pressure of 2–10 bar. The polymer blends were miscible in all of the compositions, as shown by DSC analysis, and molecular interaction between the two polymers was observed by FTIR analysis. The thermal stability of the blend membranes was found to be an additive property and a function of the blend composition. The morphology of the blend membranes was dense and homogeneous with no phase separation. Gas‐permeability studies revealed that the ideal selectivity was improved by 65% with the addition of the PES polymer in the PSF matrix. The synthesized PSF/PES blend membranes provided an optimized performance with a good combination of permeability, selectivity and thermal stability. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. In this paper, the effect of testing temperature on the performance of fixed carrier membrane for CO2 separation were studied. The blend composite membranes were developed respectively with a blend of PEI-PVA (polyetheleneimine-polyvinyl alcohol) as separation layer and PS (polysulfone) ultrafiltration membranes as the substrates. The permselectivity of the membranes was measured with CO2/CH4 mixed gas. The effect of testing temperature on membrane separation performance was investigated. The results showed that both the permeances of CO2 and CH4 decreased with the increase of temperature, and the permeances decreased more quickly under low pressure than those under high pressure. At the feed pressure of 0.11 MPa, the CO2/ CH4 selectivity of PEI-PVA/PS blend composite membrane reduced along with temperature increment. Under the feed pressure of 0.21 MPa, as well as 1.11 MPa, the selectivity decreased with the increase of temperature.  相似文献

The performance of a zeolitic imidazolate framework‐8 (ZIF‐8) membrane in single and binary CO2/CH4 gas separation was investigated by means of a gas transport model that included generalized Maxwell‐Stefan and binary friction models. The model concerns gas diffusion through the membrane layer, gas flow through membrane intercrystalline pores, and resistance of the support layer. The effective membrane area considering the actual area for the gas permeated through the membrane was also introduced in this model. The selective ZIF‐8 membrane was successfully synthesized using a microwave‐assisted solvothermal method on an α‐alumina support pre‐attached with ZIF‐8 seeds by solvent evaporation. The simulated data agreed well with the experimental data. The model revealed that the membrane intercrystalline pores and its effective area significantly affected the CO2/CH4 gas permeation and separation performance.  相似文献

Polyetherimide (PEI) was used as a polymeric additive for preparing an asymmetric polyethersulfone (PES) membrane for the separation of CO2 from CH4. In pure gas experiments, the higher skin layer thickness and the lower porosity of the sub layer for the membrane prepared from the polymer blend with the composition of 98:2 lead to an increase in CO2/CH4 selectivity and a decrease in the CO2 permeance in contrast with a pristine PES. For higher PEI contents, the higher fractional free volume of the membranes improves the gas permeance and reduces the CO2/CH4 selectivity. The incorporation of PEI in PES reduces the CO2 sorption in PES via decreasing the non-equilibrium free volume and imparts antiplasticization properties to the membrane.  相似文献

A series of polysulfone (PSF) membranes were prepared using different solvents: dimethylformamide (DMF), tetrahydrofuran, dimethylacetamide, and n-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP). The PSF membrane prepared by NMP showed the highest gas permeability. The influence of propionic acid as a Lewis acid on gas separation properties of the PSF was explored. The PSF membrane prepared by the casting solution containing 25 wt% PSF, 35 wt% propionic acid, and 40 wt% NMP showed a superior gas separation performance. The gas permeation measurements indicated that incorporating 30 wt% γ-alumina nanoparticles into the PSF matrix resulted in about the respective 43% and 41% increase in CO2 and O2 permeability together with a rise in CO2/CH4 and O2/N2 selectivities (13% and 7%, respectively). Furthermore, by rearranged modified Maxwell model, the role and nature of the interfacial layer in the PSF-based mixed matrix membranes were mathematically analyzed considering a reduced permeability factor.  相似文献

[Cellulose acetate (CA)-blend-multi walled carbon nano tubes (MWCNTs)] mixed matrix membranes (MMMs), [CA/polyethylene glycol (PEG)/MWCNTs] and [CA/styrene butadiene rubber (SBR)/MWCNTs] blend MMMs were prepared by solution casting method for gas separation applications using Tetrahydrofuran (THF) as solvent. Both raw-MWCNTs (R-MWCNTs) and functionalized carboxylic-MWCNTs (C-MWCNTs) were used in membrane preparation. The MWCNTs loading ratio and pressure effects on the gas separation performance of prepared membranes were investigated for pure He, N2, CH4 and CO2 gases. Results indicated that utilizing C-MWCNT instead of R-MWCNTs in membrane fabrication has better performance and (CO2/CH4) and (CO2/N2) selectivity reached to 21.81 and 13.74 from 13.41 and 9.33 at 0.65 wt% of MWCNTs loading respectively. The effects of PEG and SBR on the gas transport performance and mechanical properties were also investigated. The highest CO2/CH4 selectivity at 2 bar pressure was reached to 53.98 for [CA/PEG/C-MWCNT] and 43.91 for [CA/SBR/C-MWCNT] blend MMMs at 0.5 wt% and 2 wt% MWCNTs loading ratio respectively. Moreover, increase of feed pressure led to membrane gas permeability and gas pair selectivity improvement for almost all prepared membranes. The mechanical properties analysis exhibited tensile modules improvement with increasing MWCNTs loading ratio and utilizing polymer blending.  相似文献

Defect‐free skinned asymmetric gas separation membranes were prepared by a dual bath coagulation method using a wet phase inversion technique. The membranes were cast from polysulfone solution in different solvents such as: dimethyl‐formamid, 1‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone, NN‐dimethyl‐acetamide (DMAC), and tetrahydrofuran. The mixtures of water/iso‐propanol (IPA), water/propanol, water/ethanol (EtOH), and water/methanol (MeOH) with volume ratio of 80/20 were used as the first coagulation bath. This led to the formation of a dense skin top layer. Distillated water was used as the second coagulation bath. The influences of several experimental variables, such as thickness of the membrane, polymer concentration, type of solvent and nonsolvent, immersion time in IPA 20%, and second coagulation bath temperature on skin layer and sublayer were elucidated. For preparing membrane with higher permeance, the influence of internal nonsolvents and addition of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as additive were investigated. The membrane performance was tested in terms of gas permeance and selectivity for O2/N2 separation. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2011  相似文献

A series of blend membranes made from the rubbery polyether block amide (Pebax®1657) and a glassy polymer, polyethersulfone (PES) or Matrimid 5218, were fabricated by solution casting with different ratios (10–40 %), in order to combine high permeability of the former with high selectivity of the latter polymer for CO2/CH4 gas separation. The membranes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and stress–strain tests. These blend membranes showed two distinct T g s, indicating their immiscible nature as confirmed by SEM images. However, weak intermolecular interaction between polymers, as illustrated by the FTIR results, corresponds to some degree to their compatibility and improved mechanical strength, compared to the pure Pebax®. TGA analysis revealed that addition of glassy polymer improved membranes’ thermal stability. Effect of feed pressure on membrane separation, investigated by three different pressures (4, 8, and 12 bar), indicated increased permeability for higher pressures for both CO2 and CH4. Gas separation tests also pointed to improved separation properties of the blend membranes compared to those of the neat polymers, prepared the same way.  相似文献

Carbon hollow fiber membranes derived from polymer blend of polyetherimide and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) were extensively prepared through stabilization under air atmosphere followed by carbonization under N2 atmosphere. The effects of the PVP compositions on the thermal behavior, structure, and gas permeation properties were investigated thoroughly by means of differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, X‐ray diffraction, and pure gas permeation apparatus. The experimental results indicate that the transport mechanism of small gas molecules of N2, CO2, and CH4 is dominated by the molecular sieving effect. The gas permeation properties of the prepared carbon membranes have a strong dependency on PVP composition. The carbon membranes prepared from polymer blends with 6 wt % PVP demonstrated the highest CO2/CH4 and CO2/N2 selectivities of 55.33 and 41.50, respectively. © 2011 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 58: 3167–3175, 2012  相似文献

Miscible blend membranes containing 10 wt % PEG of low molecular weight 200, 600, 2000, and 6000, and 10 wt %, 20 wt %, 30 wt %, 40 wt %, 50 wt %, and 60 wt % of molecular weight 20,000 were prepared to investigate the effect of PEG on gas permeabilities and selectivities for CO2 over N2 and CH4. The permeabilities of CO2, H2, O2, CH4, and N2 were measured at temperatures from 30 to 80°C and pressures from 20 cmHg to 76 cmHg using a manometric permeation apparatus. It was determined that the blend membrane, which contained 10% PEG 20,000, exhibited higher permeability for CO2 and higher permselectivity for CO2 over N2 and CH4 than those of the membranes that contained 10% PEG of the molecular weight ranging from 200 to 6000. The high PEG 20,000 content blend membranes showed remarkable permeation properties such that the permeability coefficients of CO2 and the ideal separation factors for CO2 over N2 reached above 200 barrer and 22, respectively, at 70°C and 20 cmHg. Based on the data of gas permeability coefficients, time lags, and characterization of the membranes, it is proposed that the apparent solubility coefficients of all CA and PEG blend membranes for CO2 were lower than those of the CA membrane. However, almost all of the blend membranes containing PEG 20,000 showed higher apparent diffusivity coefficients for CO2, resulting in higher permeability coefficients of CO2 than those of the CA membrane. It is attributed to the high diffusivity selectivities of CA and PEG 20,000 blend membranes that their ideal separation factors for CO2 over N2 were higher than those of the CA membrane in the temperature range from 50 to 80°C, even though the ideal separation factors of all CA and PEG blend membranes for CO2 over CH4 became lower than those of the CA membrane over nearly the full temperature range from 30 to 80°C. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献
