Functionalization of poly(ethylene‐co‐vinyl acetate) (EVA) with vinyltriethoxysilane (VTEOS) has been carried out by a free‐radical melt‐grafting procedure in the presence of added comonomers. The influence of comonomers on silane graft yield and crosslink density has been assessed. Experiments were performed on masterbatches of EVA, VTEOS (5 wt %), peroxide initiator (L‐231, 0.05 wt %), and comonomer (0–1 comonomer : VTEOS mole ratio) prepared at 90°C. Melt‐grafting experiments were carried out at 145°C in an oscillating disk rheometer (ODR), which measured crosslink density during the grafting process. Silane graft yields were determined by proton NMR spectroscopy. Comonomers evaluated were maleic anhydride (MAn), 1‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone (VP), and 1‐dodecene (DD). At the comonomer ratios examined, MAn suppressed both silane grafting and peroxide‐initiated crosslinking. Both VP and DD, however, exhibited greater selectivity in suppressing crosslinking than silane grafting; optimum performance was found at a comonomer : vinylsilane mole ratio of 0.2. None of the comonomers studied enhanced the level of silane grafting. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 76: 1308–1314, 2000  相似文献

Poly(ethylene‐vinyl acetate) (EVA) copolymer was melt grafted with maleic anhydride (MAH) in a twin screw extruder in the presence of peroxide. It is confirmed that MAH has been melt grafted on the backbone of EVA by FTIR using the method of hydrolysis. The NMR analysis suggests that the grafting reaction occurs on the tertiary carbon of main chain of EVA other than the methyl moiety of vinyl acetate (VA) group. The incorporation of VA groups onto the matrix shows a competitive effect on the grafting. The existence of VA groups promotes the extent of MAH graft onto EVA; nevertheless, it also weakens the crystallizability of main chain. When the content of peroxide initiator is 0.1 wt % based on the polymer matrix, the grafting degree increases with increasing the concentration of monomer. When the peroxide content is higher than 0.1 wt %, side reactions such as crosslinking or disproportionation will be introduced into this system. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The Izod impact strength of maleic anhydride‐grafted acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (MA‐g‐ABS) copolymer has been improved by the use of rubbery poly(ethylene‐co‐vinyl acetate) (EVA). The MA‐g‐ABS is prepared by an internal mixer using dicumyl peroxide as free radical initiator, and the grafting degree was determined using back‐titration method. The amount of EVA is optimized by evaluating the Izod impact strength, tensile, and flexural properties of the samples. Addition of 6% EVA into MA‐g‐ABS system improved the Izod impact strength and tensile strength by 18% and 35%, respectively. The miscibility of EVA in ABS and MA‐g‐ABS matrices has been observed using differential scanning calorimetry and scanning electron microscopy techniques. The enhanced adhesion property exhibited by MA‐g‐ABS/EVA systems promises it as a good candidate for thermoplastic coating applications on aluminum substrates. J. VINYL ADDIT. The aim of this investigation is to evaluate the effect of hot air aging on properties of ethylene‐vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA, 14 wt % vinyl acetate units), ethylene‐acrylic acid copolymer (EAA, 8 wt % acrylic acid units), and their blends. Attenuated total reflection‐Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), wide angle X‐ray diffraction, and mechanical tests are employed to investigate the changes of copolymer blends' structures and properties. Increase of carbonyl index derived from ATR measurements with aging time suggests the incorporation of oxygen into the polymeric chain. By DSC measurements, the enthalpy at low temperature endothermic peak (Tm2) of EAA becomes less and disappears after 8 weeks aging, but enthalpy at Tm2 of EVA is not influenced by the hot air aging and remains stable despite of the aging time. For various proportions of EAA and EVA blends, enthalpy at Tm2 decreases as the EAA proportion increases when aging time is 8 weeks; after several weeks of hot air aging, the various blends appear a same new peak just over the aging temperature 70°C which is due to the completion of crystals which are not of thermodynamic equilibrium state. Mechanical tests show that increase of crystallinity and hot air aging deterioration both have influence on the hardness, tensile strength, and elongation at break. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The photoinitiated crosslinking of halogen‐free flame‐retarded ethylene‐vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) by the phosphorous‐nitrogen compound NP28 in the presence of photoinitiator and crosslinker and characterization of the related properties have been investigated by gel determination, heat extension test, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), mechanical measurement, and thermal aging test. The photocrosslinking efficiency of EVA/NP28 blend and various factors affecting the crosslinking process, such as photoinitiator, crosslinker, NP28 content, and irradiation temperature, were studied in detail and optimized by comparison of gel content. The results show that the EVA/NP28 blend filled with 28.2 wt % NP28 with a thickness of 1.6 mm is homogeneously photocrosslinked to a gel content of above 80 wt % with 4.8 s UV‐irradiation under optimum conditions. The data from TGA, mechanical measurement, and thermal aging test give evidence that the thermal stability and mechanical properties of photocrosslinked EVA/NP28 blend are much better than those of the unphotocrosslinked one.© 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The graft copolymer, poly[(hydroxybutyrate‐co‐hydroxyvalerate)‐g‐phenyl vinyl ketone] [P(HBV‐g‐PVK)], was synthesized by graft polymerization of phenyl vinyl ketone (PVK) onto poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) under nitrogen atmosphere using benzoyl peroxide. The structure of P(HBV‐g‐PVK) was identified by Fourier transform IR and 1H‐NMR spectra. The effects of weight ratio of PVK to PHBV in feed, initiator concentration, reaction time, and reaction temperature on the grafting ratio and grafting efficiency were investigated. The thermal decomposition temperature of P(HBV‐g‐PVK) was 272°C. The tensile strengths of P(HBV‐g‐PVK) after photo‐ or biodegradation were significantly decreased due to degradation by UV irradiation or Aspergillus niger. The value of color difference (ΔE) of P(HBV‐g‐PVK) was greater than that of PHBV. The film surfaces of P(HBV‐g‐PVK) treated with UV irradiation and Aspergillus niger showed many pits as compared with the untreated P(HBV‐g‐PVK). It has been found that the photo‐ and biodegradabilities of P(HBV‐g‐PVK) was excellent. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 74: 1432–1439, 1999  相似文献

A graft copolymer of oleic acid (OA) onto low‐density polyethylene (LDPE) was prepared using dicumyl peroxide (DCP) as an initiator in the molten state. The grafting was carried out in a Haake rheometer. The effects of the reaction time and the amount of DCP and the monomer on the percentage of grafting were studied. The rheological behavior and the melt‐flow rate of the graft copolymer (LDPE‐g‐OA) were also investigated. FTIR spectroscopy and a mass spectrum were used to characterize the structure of LDPE‐g‐OA. The experimental results showed that when the OA amount was 10 wt % and the DCP amount was 0.4 wt % based on the LDPE the percentage of grafting of LDPE‐g‐OA, prepared by maintaining the temperature at 170°C and the roller speed at 80 rpm, was about 6 wt %. It was found that both LDPE and LDPE‐g‐OA were pseudoplastic fluids. OA was grafted onto LDPE in the form of a monomer and a dimer. The grafted LDPE is expected to act as a compatibilizer between starch and polyethylene. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 90: 3299–3304, 2003  相似文献

A technique has been examined for reducing the extent of crosslinking resulting from 1,1‐di(t‐butylperoxy)‐3,3,5‐trimethylcyclohexane (L‐231) initiating melt grafting of vinyltriethoxysilane (VTEOS) onto poly(ethylene‐co‐vinyl acetate) (EVA). Using measurements of crosslink density and VTEOS conversion, a standard of selectivity for the EVA/VTEOS/L‐231 system at 145 °C was defined and used to assess the influence of a range of additives (0.25 mol per mole VTEOS). The data indicated that compounds such as 4‐nonene, N,N‐dimethylaniline, and cumene improve reaction selectivity, whereas dodecane and cyclohexyl acetate have no effect. A strong correlation between the minimum C? H bond dissociation energy and the influence of a given compound is evident, suggesting that a labile C? H bond is the key element of an effective additive. A mechanism of additive function on the basis of hydrogen atom donation is proposed. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Chitosan‐g‐poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) copolymers with different grafting percent were prepared by grafting water‐soluble PVA onto chitosan. The drug‐release behavior was studied using the chitosan‐g‐PVA copolymer matrix containing prednisolone in a drug‐delivery system under various conditions. The relationship between the amount of the released drug and the square root of time was linear. From this result, the drug‐release behavior through the chitosan‐g‐PVA copolymer matrix is shown to be consistent with Higuchi's diffusion model. The drug‐release apparent constant (KH) was slightly decreased at pH 1.2, but increased at pH 7.4 and 10 according to the increasing PVA grafting percent. Also, KH was decreased by heat treatment and crosslinking. The drug release behavior of the chitosan‐g‐PVA copolymer matrix was able to be controlled by the PVA grafting percent, heat treatment, or crosslinking and was also less affected by the pH values than was the chitosan matrix. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. In this article, maleated–grafted ethylene‐co‐vinyl acetate (EVA‐g‐MA) was used as the interfacial modifier for polypropylene/polyamide‐6 (PP/PA6) blends, and effects of its concentration on the mechanical properties and the morphology of blends were investigated. It was found that the addition of EVA‐g‐MA improved the compatibility between PP and PA6 and resulted in a finer dispersion of dispersed PA6 phase. In comparison with uncompatibilized PP/PA6 blend, a significant reduction in the size of dispersed PA6 domain was observed. Toluene‐etched micrographs confirmed the formation of interfacial copolymers. Mechanical measurement revealed that the addition of EVA‐g‐MA markedly improved the impact toughness of PP/PA6 blend. Fractograph micrographs revealed that matrix shear yielding began to occur when EVA‐g‐MA concentration was increased upto 18 wt %. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The photodegradation (432 h under irradiation of Xe‐Lamp‐solar filter) of an ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymer with vinyl acetate content of 9% was studied, and the effect of iron and calcium stearates was evaluated using different techniques such us attenuated total reflectance‐Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR‐FTIR), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and thermal analysis methods (DSC and TGA). A re‐arrangement in crystallization and consequent decrease in thermal stability were found through differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), which were in agreement with the chain scission tendency. The presence of Ca and Fe pro‐oxidants additives in EVA films increased the ketone carbonyl formation and decreased the ester absorption band of the acetate respect to the pure EVA, as it was evidenced by the significant changes in Carbonyl Indexes found by FTIR. The activity of stearates has been also evaluated by chemiluminescence, where the temperature‐ramping tests under nitrogen showed the formation of a peroxide peak at lower temperature. The lower stability of the films containing pro‐oxidants was evidenced by the values of oxidation induction time (OIT) determined by DSC. The results were supported by GC‐MS, where the concentration of extracted products identified in the EVA containing pro‐oxidants was significant and a much greater decrease in molecular weight was determined by GPC, which confirmed the development of degradation for EVA with Ca and Fe stearates in comparison to pure EVA. Biodegradation of photodegraded EVA films were studied at 45°C during 90 days using a mixture of Bacillus (MIX) (B. cereus, B. megaterium, and B. subtilis) and, in parallel, by Brevibacillus borstelensis as reference strain. Biodegradation of EVA‐films was studied by Chemiluminescence, ATR‐FTIR and GC‐product analysis and the data confirm more efficient biodegradation on the materials containing pro‐oxidants. The chemiluminescence emissions due to decomposition of oxidation species was observed at lower temperatures on the biodegraded samples. Also, the drastic decrease of carbonyl index and the disappearance of photogenerated low molecular products with biodegradation were more efficient on the biodegraded films containing pro‐oxidants. EVA mineralization was evaluated by carbon dioxide measurement using indirect impedance technique. Biodegradation by B. borstelensis and MIX at 45°C was similar and exhibited a pronounced difference between the pure photodegraded EVA film (around 15% of mineralization) and the corresponding photodegraded films containing Ca and Fe stearates where biodegradation extent reached values of 23‐26% of biodegradation after 90 days. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The objective of this research was the surface grafting polymerization of biocompatible monomer N‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone (NVP) onto a plasma‐treated nonwoven poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) substrate with ultraviolet (UV)‐induced methods. The effects of various parameters, such as the monomer concentration, reaction time, initiator (ammonium peroxodisulfate) concentration, and crosslinking agent (N,N′‐methylene bisacrylamide) concentration, on the grafting percentage were studied. The grafting efficiency of the modified nonwoven PET surfaces reached a maximum at 50 min of UV irradiation and with a 30 wt % aqueous NVP solution. After the plasma activation and/or grafting, the hydrophobic surface of the nonwoven was modified into a hydrophilic surface. NVP was successfully grafted onto nonwoven PET surfaces. The surface wettability showed that the water absorption of NVP‐grafted nonwoven PET (NVP‐g‐nonwoven PET) increased with increasing grafting time. NVP‐g‐nonwoven PET was verified by Fourier transform infrared spectra and scanning electron microscopy measurements. An antibacterial assessment using an anti‐Staphylococcus aureus test indicated that S. aureus was restrained from growing in NVP‐g‐nonwoven PET. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Correlations among the degree of crosslinking of ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA), the grafting yield of maleic anhydride (MAH) onto EVA, and the mechanical properties of the blends of poly(butylene terephtalate) (PBT) with EVA‐g‐MAH were investigated. The EVA was functionalized by melt grafting reaction in the presence of MAH and dicumyl peroxide (DCP) using a plasticorder. The grafting yield of MAH was increased by increasing the concentration of MAH and DCP. The flexural strength of PBT–EVA‐g‐MAH blends depends on both the grafting yield of MAH and the degree of crosslinking of EVA, while the crosslinked parts of EVA‐g‐MAH hindered rather than improved the tensile strength regardless of the increase of the grafting yield of MAH. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The functionalization reactions of ethylene–propylene–diene monomer rubber (EPDM) with maleic anhydride (MAH) in melt state through high‐shear‐stress‐induced initiation by an increase in the screw rotation speed of the twin‐screw extruder and through compounded initiation by the addition of some initiator and an increase in the screw rotation speed were investigated. The results show that, with increasing screw rotation speed and reaction temperature, the percentage grafting and melt flow rate of the functionalized products (EPDM‐g‐MAH) were noticeably increased, and the viscosity‐average molecular weight decreased, which implied that the grafting reaction consisted of the chain scission and grafting reaction of the produced macroradicals with MAH. In the presence of a certain peroxide initiator, the crosslinking reaction during melt extrusion was suppressed by an increase in the screw rotation speed. The percentage grafting of EPDM‐g‐MAH amounted to 1.1%, its melt flow rate was between 0.3 and 4.0 g/10 min, and its gel content was less than 1.0%, depending on the screw rotation speed and reaction temperature. Impact testing and scanning electron microscopy showed that the functionalized product prepared through the high shear stress‐induced initiation had a higher blocking activity with the amide terminated of PA66 than that prepared through the peroxide initiation or through the compound initiation, and the impact strength of the PA66/EPDM blends, improved by the high‐shear‐stress‐induced product was noticeably higher than those of the peroxide‐initiated product or the compound‐initiated one. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Process parameters of poly (ethylene‐co‐vinyl acetate) (EVA)‐modified poly (ethylene‐co‐1‐octene) (POE)‐interpenetrating, double network blend was designed through Taguchi L9 orthogonal array as a novel approach for complete optimization of engineering and solvent‐swelling properties. Influence of different factors like EVA and peroxide concentrations, blending temperature, and blending time on gel content, tensile modulus, tensile strength, ultimate elongation were statistically calculated. Results showed good correlation between mathematical and physical inferences. Stress relaxation, hysteresis and other physico‐mechanicals like total elongation, solvent‐swelling, etc., were interestingly depended upon the nature of dominantly crosslinked phase instead of net crosslinking of the network hybrids. Sorption, on the other hand, depended on the hydrophobic‐hydrophilic property of the surfaces. The series of data produced finally helped to select the best process parameters under which a particular POE‐EVA blend composition yielded most balanced physico‐mechanicals. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The copolymer of styrene–ethylene–butylene–styrene triblock copolymer‐g‐polylactic acid (SEBS‐g‐PLA) was successfully prepared using a novel solvothermal synthetic method, in which the graft copolymerization of PLA and SEBS was simply performed in cholorform solution at 100–150°C with benzoyl peroxide (BPO) as initiator. The effect of various factors including the reaction temperature and time and the content of BPO and PLA on the graft copolymerization was investigated in detail. It is found that the optimal reaction condition for the grafted copolymers SEBS‐g‐PLA was 120°C for 5 h, while the optimal formulation of SEBS/PLA/BPO was 5 g/2 g/0.5 g in 30 mL chloroform. The properties and microstructures of the obtained SEBS‐g‐PLA copolymers were also studied. The tensile strength and elongation at break were higher than that of pure SEBS and improved with the increase of grafting degree. In addition, SEBS‐g‐PLA copolymer possessed two‐phase structure with vague phase boundaries. The as‐prepared SEBS‐g‐PLA copolymers can be used as the toughening component to improve the impact strength of PLA. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2011  相似文献

Solvothermal process was successfully developed to graft dibutylmaleate (DBM) onto poly(ethylene‐co‐1‐octene) (POE) with dicumyl peroxide (DCP) as free radical‐initiator. FTIR spectra demonstrate that DBM is successfully grafted onto the backbone of POE by this novel method. The influences of DBM content, DCP concentration, POE concentration, reaction temperature and reaction time on the grafting copolymerization have been investigated in detail through grafting degree (GD). It is worthy to indicate that high grafting degree (above 15%) can be achieved through the one‐pot way when the graft reaction is carried out in 40 mL toluene at 150°C for 5 h with 1.6 g DBM, 6–8 g POE and 0.35 g DCP. This developed solvothermal process is becoming an effective way to prepare POE‐g‐DBM graft copolymers, and can be extended to other systems. In addition, TGA results show that the thermal properties of POE are enhanced after the grafting reaction. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2010  相似文献

EVA was blended with phenoxy over the whole range of composition using a twin‐screw Brabender. Two‐phase separation caused by EVA crystallization was observed in the EVA‐rich blends and the dispersed domain of EVA was not clearly shown in the phenoxy‐rich blends. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed that the glass transition temperature (Tg) of EVA was increased by 5–10°C in the EVA‐rich blends but the Tg of phenoxy was superposed over the melting behavior of EVA. X‐ray diffraction measurement indicated that EVA crystallization was restricted in the phenoxy‐rich blends and the EVA crystal structure was influenced by incorporation of phenoxy into the EVA‐rich blends. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) foams have important application in electrical, toys, and other industries. Several foams were prepared by ethylene‐vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) lonely, and in combination with styrene‐butadiene and ethylene‐propylene‐diene monomer rubbers (SBR and EPDM). The effects of crosslinking and foaming agents and EVA type on density and mechanical properties of the cured foams with two curing systems, peroxide and sulfur‐peroxide with potential use in automotive applications, were studied. The results showed that proposed compounds formulations were foamed properly. The viscosity of the EVA was a key factor for the density values of the formed foams. The densities of the cured foams with peroxide system with various SBR contents were higher when compared with cured foams with sulfur‐peroxide system. With increasing foaming agent, the densities of the foams were reduced for studied curing systems. The densities of the EVA–EPDM foams were lower than those of the EVA–SBR foams in the same studied conditions. Increasing rubber in foam formulation had adverse effect on tensile properties of the foams. The existence of the talc powder in foam formulation had important role on the shape and type of the formed cells and resulted in foams with mostly closed cells. The results of this study help the automotive article designer to produce suitable TPE foam. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2017 , 134, 45357.  相似文献

The reactive compatibilization of blends of HDPE–PET [high‐density polyethylene–poly(ethylene terephthalate)] was investigated in this study. The compatibilizers used were two grafted copolymers prepared by reactive extrusion containing 1.20–2.30 wt % GMA such as HDPE‐g‐GMA and one statistical copolymer containing 1 wt % GMA such as Lotader AX8920. HDPE was successfully functionalized using a melt free‐radical grafting technique. Grafting was initiated in two ways: adding an initiator in the polymer–monomer mixture or activation by ozone of polymer. Ozonization of HDPE by the introduction of a peroxide lead to a better grafting yield and to better grafting efficiency of the samples. The effects of the three compatibilizers were evaluated by studying the morphology and the thermal and mechanical properties of HDPE–PET (70/30 wt %) blends. Significant improvements were observed, especially in morphology, elongation at break, and Charpy impact strength of the compatibilized blends. A more pronounced compatibilizing effect was obtained with the statistical copolymer, for which the elongation at break and the impact strength were increased by 100%, while the uncompatibilized blends showed a 60% decrease in the Young's modulus and the strength at break. We also were able to show that the grafting yield increase of 1.20–2.30 wt % of GMA did not affect the properties of the blends because the grafted copolymers possess very similar chemical structures. However, compatibilization of blends with grafted copolymers is an interesting method, particularly for recycled blends, because the synthesis of these compatibilizers is easy and cheap in comparison to statistical copolymer. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
