The study examines a novel system that combined a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) and an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) for cooling, heating and power production (trigeneration) through exergy analysis. The system consists of an SOFC, an ORC, a heat exchanger and a single-effect absorption chiller. The system is modeled to produce a net electricity of around 500 kW. The study reveals that there is 3-25% gain on exergy efficiency when trigeneration is used compared with the power cycle only. Also, the study shows that as the current density of the SOFC increases, the exergy efficiencies of power cycle, cooling cogeneration, heating cogeneration and trigeneration decreases. In addition, it was shown that the effect of changing the turbine inlet pressure and ORC pump inlet temperature are insignificant on the exergy efficiencies of the power cycle, cooling cogeneration, heating cogeneration and trigeneration. Also, the study reveals that the significant sources of exergy destruction are the ORC evaporator, air heat exchanger at the SOFC inlet and heating process heat exchanger.  相似文献

A 100 kWe hybrid plant consisting of gasification system, solid oxide fuel cells and organic Rankine cycle is presented. The nominal power is selected based on cultivation area requirement. For the considered output a land of around 0.5 km2 needs to be utilized. Woodchips are introduced into a fixed bed gasification plant to produce syngas which fuels the combined solid oxide fuel cells – organic Rankine cycle system to produce electricity. More than a hundred fluids are considered as possible alternative for the organic cycle using non-ideal equations of state (or state-of-the-art equations of state). A genetic algorithm is employed to select the optimal working fluid and the maximum pressure for the bottoming cycle. Thermodynamic and physical properties, environmental impacts and hazard specifications are also considered in the screening process. The results suggest that efficiencies in the region of 54–56% can be achieved. The highest thermal efficiency (56.4%) is achieved with propylcyclohexane at 15.9 bar. A comparison with the available and future technologies for biomass to electricity conversion is carried out. It is shown that the proposed system presents twice the thermal efficiency achieved by simple and double stage organic Rankine cycle plants and around the same efficiency of a combined gasification, solid oxide fuel cells and micro gas turbine plant.  相似文献

Rice straw is a potential energy source for power generation. Here, a biomass-based combined heat and power plant integrating a downdraft gasifier, a solid oxide fuel cell, a micro gas turbine and an organic Rankine cycle is investigated. Energy, exergy, and economic analyses and multi-objective optimization of the proposed system are performed. A parametric analysis is carried out to understand the effects on system performance and cost of varying key parameters: current density, fuel utilization factor, operating pressure, pinch point temperature, recuperator effectiveness and compressors isentropic efficiency. The results show that current density plays the most important role in achieving a tradeoff between system exergy efficiency and cost rate. Also, it is observed that the highest exergy destruction occurs in the gasifier, so improving the performance of this component can considerably reduce the system irreversibility. At the optimum point, the system generates 329 kW of electricity and 56 kW of heating with an exergy efficiency of 35.1% and a cost rate of 10.2 $/h. The capability of this system for using Iran rice straw produced in one year is evaluated as a case study, and it is shown that the proposed system can generate 6660 GWh electrical energy and 1140 GWh thermal energy.  相似文献

This study presents an energetic performance analysis for a combined power generation system consisting of a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) and an organic Rankine cycle (ORC). In order to simulate the SOFC–ORC combined system under steady‐state conditions, a mathematical model is developed. The developed model is used to determine the potential effects caused by the changes of the design parameters on the energetic performance of the combined system. As design parameters, turbine inlet pressure, condenser temperature, fuel utilization, current density, compressor pressure ratio, and cell operating temperature are taken into account. In this regard, the electrical power and First Law efficiency are estimated by parametrical analysis and discussed comprehensively. Results of these analyses show that the efficiency is increased about 14–25% by recovering SOFC waste heat through ORC based on investigated design parameter conditions. This paper performed a comparative analysis of organic Rankine cycle (ORC) using different working fluids, in order to recover waste heat from a solid oxide fuel cell‐gas turbine hybrid power cycle. Depending on operating parameters, criteria for the choice of the working fluid were identified. Results reveal that due to a significant temperature glide of the exhaust gas, the actual ORC cycle thermal efficiency strongly depends on the turbine inlet temperature, exhaust gas temperature, and fluid's critical point temperature. When exhaust gas temperature varies in the range of 500 K to 600 K, R123 is preferred among the nine dry typical organic fluids because of the highest and most stabilized mean thermal efficiency under wide operating conditions and its reasonable condensing pressure and turbine outlet specific volume, which in turn results in a feasible ORC cycle for practical concerns. Fuelling SOFC with reformed fuel can be beneficial due to it being cheaper compared to pure hydrogen. A biomass fuel can be easily modeled as a reformed fuel, as it can be converted into H2 and CO using gasification or biodegradation, the main composition of product from a reformer. Hence in this study it is assumed that feed to the fuel cell contains only H2 and CO. A closed parametric model is formulated. Performance is analyzed with changes in temperature, pressure and fuel ratio; considering the possible voltage losses, like ohmic, activation, mass transfer and fuel crossover. Performance curves consisting of operating voltage, fuel utilization, efficiency, power density and current density are developed for both pure hydrogen and mixture of CO and H2. Variations of open circuit voltage with temperature, power density with current density, operating voltage with current density and maximum power density with fuel utilization are also evaluated.  相似文献

Shipping contributes 4.5% to global CO2 emissions and is not covered by the Kyoto Agreement. One method of reducing CO2 emissions on land is combined cooling heating and power (CCHP) or trigeneration, with typical combined thermal efficiencies of over 80%. Large luxury yachts are seen as an ideal entry point to the off-shore market for this developing technology considering its current high cost.This paper investigates the feasibility of combining a SOFC-GT system and an absorption heat pump (AHP) in a trigeneration system to drive the heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) and electrical base-load systems. A thermodynamic model is used to simulate the system, with various configurations and cooling loads. Measurement of actual yacht performance data forms the basis of this system simulation.It is found that for the optimum configuration using a double effect absorption chiller in Ship 1, the net electric power increases by 47% relative to the electrical power available for a conventional SOFC-GT-HVAC system. This is due to more air cooled to a lower temperature by absorption cooling; hence less electrical cooling by the conventional HVAC unit is required. The overall efficiency is 12.1% for the conventional system, 34.9% for the system with BROAD single effect absorption chiller, 43.2% for the system with double effect absorption chiller. This shows that the overall efficiency of a trigeneration system is far higher when waste heat recovery happens.The desiccant wheel hardly reduces moisture from the outdoor air due to a relative low mass flow rate of fuel cell exhaust available to dehumidify a very large mass flow rate of HVAC air, Hence, desiccant wheel is not recommended for this application.  相似文献

This study proposes a trigeneration system based on solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) for generating power, cooling and heating simultaneously. The system mainly contains a SOFC, a gas turbine (GT), an organic Rankine cycle (ORC), a steam ejector refrigerator (SER) and a heat exchanger. The thermodynamic, exergoeconomic and exergoenvironmental models of proposed trigeneration system are developed, and the effects of design parameters on system performances are analyzed. The results indicate that the system average product cost and environmental impact per unit of exergy increase with SOFC inlet temperature and working pressure, the pinch point temperature difference and evaporating pressure of Generator, while decrease with the current density of fuel cell. Finally, optimization is performed to achieve the optimal exergy-based performance. It is revealed that though the system exergy efficiency is decreased by 7.64% after optimization, the system average product cost and environmental impact per unit of exergy are significantly reduced.  相似文献

In this study, both energetic and exergetic performances of a combined heat and power (CHP) system for vehicular applications are evaluated. This system proposes ammonia-fed solid oxide fuel cells based on proton conducting electrolyte (SOFC-H+) with a heat recovery option. Fuel consumption of combined fuel cell and energy storage system is investigated for several cases. The performance of the portable SOFC system is studied in a wide range of the cell’s average current densities and fuel utilization ratios. Considering a heat recovery option, the system exergy efficiency is calculated to be 60-90% as a function of current density, whereas energy efficiency varies between 60 and 40%, respectively. The largest exergy destructions take place in the SOFC stack, micro-turbine, and first heat exchanger. The entropy generation rate in the CHP system shows a 25% decrease for every 100 °C increase in average operating temperature.  相似文献

This paper presents exergy analysis of a conceptualized combined cogeneration plant that employs pressurized oxygen blown coal gasifier and high‐temperature, high‐pressure solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) in the topping cycle and a bottoming steam cogeneration cycle. Useful heat is supplied by the pass‐out steam from the steam turbine and also by the steam raised separately in an evaporator placed in the heat recovery steam generator (HRSG). Exergy analysis shows that major part of plant exergy destruction takes place in gasifier and SOFC while considerable losses are also attributed to gas cooler, combustion chamber and HRSG. Exergy losses are found to decrease with increasing pressure ratio across the gas turbine for all of these components except the gas cooler. In this work, the trigeneration system, consisting of a proton-conducting solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC–H+) and a single-stage LiBr absorption chiller, was proposed. The SOFC–H+ and single-stage LiBr absorption chiller models were developed through Aspen Plus V10. From the sensitivity analysis, the results show that increases in temperature and fuel utilization can improve the performance of the SOFC–H+. Conversely, the air to fuel (A/F) molar ratio and pressure negatively affect the electrical efficiency and overall system efficiency. In the case of the absorption chiller, the coefficient of performance was increased and made stable according to a constant value when the generator temperature was increased from 90 to 100 °C. When the optimization was performed, it was found that the SOFC–H+ should be operated at 700 °C and 10 bar with fuel utilization of 0.8 and A/F molar ratio of 2 to achieve a maximum overall efficiency of 93.34%. For the energy and exergy analysis, a combined heat and power SOFC–H+ was found to have the highest energy and exergy efficiencies, followed by the trigeneration process. This indicates that the integration of the SOFC–H+ and LiBr absorption chiller is possible to efficiently produce electricity, heating and cooling.  相似文献

In this study, the balance of plant (BOP) of an ethanol-fueled SOFC is analyzed using the GCTool software package developed by Argonne National Laboratory (ANL). The effects of the excess air ratio and fuel utilization on the electric and heat efficiencies of the SOFC are systematically examined for two reforming methods (steam reforming and auto-thermal reforming) and two flow sheets (BOP A and BOP B). In BOP A, the cathode off-gas is passed directly to the afterburner together with the unreacted fuel, and the hot flue gas exiting the burner is then used to provide the thermal energy required for the ethanol reforming process. In BOP B, the cathode off-gas is passed through a heat exchanger in order to heat the ethanol fuel prior to the reforming process, and is then flowed into the burner with the unreacted fuel. The results show that given an SOFC inlet temperature of 650 °C, a fuel utilization of 70.2% and excess air ratios of 4, 6 and 7, respectively, the overall system efficiency is equal to 74.9%, 72.3% and 71.0%. In general, the results presented in this study provide a useful starting point for the design and development of practical ethanol-fueled SOFC test systems.  相似文献

In this paper, energetic performance comparison of three trigeneration systems is presented. The systems considered are SOFC-trigeneration, biomass-trigeneration, and solar-trigeneration systems. This study compares the performance of the systems considered when there is only electrical power and the efficiency improvement of these systems when there is trigeneration. Different key output parameters are examined: energy efficiency, net electrical power, electrical to heating and cooling ratios, and (GHG) GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions. This study shows that the SOFC-trigeneration system has the highest electrical efficiency among the three systems. Alternatively, when trigeneration is used, the efficiencies of all three systems considered increase considerably. The maximum trigeneration efficiency of the SOFC-trigeneration system is around 76% while it is around 90% for the biomass-trigeneration system. On the other hand, the maximum trigeneration efficiencies of the solar-trigeneration system is around 90% for the solar mode, 45% for storage and storage mode, and 41% for the storage mode. In addition, this study shows that the emissions of CO2 in kg per MWh of electrical power are high for the biomass-trigeneration and SOFC-trigeneration systems. However, by considering the emissions per MWh of trigeneration, their values drop to less than one fourth.  相似文献

The present work aim is performance improvement of an integrated geothermal system by proposing the integration of organic Rankine flash cycle (ORFC) with the Proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) and waste heat recovery from condensers using thermoelectric generator (TEG) modules. To achieve this goal, a novel integrated system is proposed, thermodynamically modeled, investigated, and compared with the conventional system. To assess the performance of proposed system, thermodynamic and economic evaluations are performed. The results indicate that R123 as working fluid, has the best performance for the conventional and proposed systems. The findings demonstrate that with employing TEG modules an increase of 2.7% and 2.8%, for the first and second law efficiencies can be obtained respectively. Additionally, the results of parametric analysis indicate that however the geothermal fluid temperature increment decreases the first and second law efficiencies of the system, it leads to the net output power enhancement. Also, enhancement of the flash vessel pressure ratio increases the first and second law efficiency as well. Additionally, the simple payback method showed that a payback time between 1.25 years and 25 years according to the TEG modules cost can be achieved.  相似文献

Using fuel cell systems for distributed generation (DG) applications represents a meaningful candidate to conventional plants due to their high power density and the heat recovery potential during the electrochemical reaction. A hybrid power system consisting of a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell stack and an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) is proposed to utilize the waste heat generated from PEM fuel cell. The system performance is evaluated by the steady-state mathematical models and thermodynamic laws. Meanwhile, a parametric analysis is also carried out to investigate the effects of some key parameters on the system performance, including the fuel flow rate, PEM fuel cell operating pressure, turbine inlet pressure and turbine backpressure. Results show that the electrical efficiency of the hybrid system combined by PEM fuel cell stack and ORC can be improved by about 5% compared to that of the single PEM fuel cell stack without ORC, and it is also indicated that the high fuel flow rate can reduce the PEM fuel cell electrical efficiency and overall electrical efficiency. Moreover, with an increased fuel cell operating pressure, both PEM fuel cell electrical efficiency and overall electrical efficiency firstly increase, and then decrease. Turbine inlet pressure and backpressure also have effects on the performance of the hybrid power system.  相似文献

Despite the intense interest in solid oxide fuel cells, many details of their durability remain a mystery. Here, we present the insight see on electrode degradation in thermal cycle processes. Our model interprets the degradation to the stresses induced by thermal expansion mismatch of the electrocatalyst and electrolyte in a composite electrode that undergoes a temperature change. Such stresses might break the particle-particle interfaces (grain boundaries), thus reduce oxygen-ionic conductivity, electronic conductivity, and three-phase boundaries within the electrode, and consequently, degrade its performance. The model formulates the degradation rate as a function of cycle number, thermal expansion coefficient, composition, and particle size, providing a remarkable ability to balance thermal expansion restriction and catalytic activity of electrode materials, to optimize the electrode structure and composition, and to predict thermal-cycle durability. The model explicitly demonstrates that, in addition to their excellent electrochemical activity, nanostructured electrodes exhibit exceptional durability in thermal cycle processes.  相似文献

Fuel cells already provide heat and power to people’s homes with lower direct CO2 emissions and fuel consumption than traditional methods. However, their whole life cycle, including manufacture and disposal, must be considered to verify that these environmental impacts are actually reduced and not merely shifted elsewhere. The total carbon footprint and energy payback times have been widely reported for other emerging microgeneration technologies, but have not previously been calculated for fuel cell systems.  相似文献

A new integrated power generation system driven by the solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) is proposed to improve the conversion efficiency of conventional energy by using a Kalina cycle to recover the waste heat of exhaust from the SOFC-GT. The system using methane as main fuel consists an internal reforming SOFC, an after-burner, a gas turbine, preheaters, compressors and a Kalina cycle. The proposed system is simulated based on the developed mathematical models, and the overall system performance has been evaluated by the first and second law of thermodynamics. Exergy analysis is conducted to indicate the thermodynamic losses in each components. A parametric analysis is also carried out to examine the effects of some key thermodynamic parameters on the system performance. Results indicate that as compressor pressure ratio increases, SOFC electrical efficiency increases and there is an optimal compressor pressure ratio to reach the maximum overall electrical efficiency and exergy efficiency. It is also found that SOFC electrical efficiency, overall electrical efficiency and exergy efficiency can be improved by increasing air flow rate. Also, the largest exergy destruction occurs in the SOFC followed by the after-burner, the waste heat boiler, the gas turbine. The compressor pressure ratio and air flow rate have significant effects on the exergy destruction in some main components of system.  相似文献

The objective of this paper is to improve the endurance of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) against thermal cycles by reducing the stress caused by the difference in thermal expansion coefficients of alloy separator and electrolyte. The thermal cycle characteristics were improved by using a ceramic fiber for the sealing material. The ceramic fiber seemed to play the role of suppressing electrolyte-cracking by relaxing the stress set up during thermal cycles. The appropriate structure for the sealing material was investigated with 200 mm×150 mm×4 combined-cell single-layer modules. The glass was arranged around the internal manifold to suppress gas leakage, and the ceramic fiber was arranged around the electrolyte to prevent the glass from contacting the electrolyte. It was confirmed that the thermal cycle characteristics can be improved and that good cell performance can be maintained by adopting this gas seal structure.  相似文献

Performance improvement being a major need of the power sector aims at increasing efficiency, lowering air pollutants and ultimately cost. This paper explores a quadruple cycle, a hybrid of solid oxide fuel cell integrated with gas turbine, steam turbine and organic Rankine cycle totaling four cycles (SOFC-GT-ST-ORC), fueled primarily by natural gas for stationary power generation. A mathematical model of the configuration of the quadruple cycle is developed and the performance investigated through a parametric study of the thermodynamic components. The power output, efficiency and other results were validated with those found in literature. The quadruple cycle produced an efficiency of 66.1% with 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane, R134a as the organic working fluid. This efficiency exceeded the performance of traditional thermodynamic cycles like single steam cycle, combined and triple cycle at similar operating conditions. Lastly, the quadruple cycle presents a potential for optimization with waste heat recovery.  相似文献
