A method for the manual extraction of business rules from legacy source code

One of the main barriers to the successful migration of legacy systems is lack of information about the system to be migrated.With the complexity of modern information systems, it is rarely the case that an organisation has a complete end-to-endunderstanding of its systems, business processes and information. This is particularly true of the business rules enforced by suchsystems, which are often poorly documented (if at all) and incompletely understood by those who own, use and maintain suchsystems. These business rules must be migrated, along with the other system functionality, but this is difficult when they areburied deep within the source code of the system. In this paper, we propose a method for the discovery of business rules throughinspection of the source code of legacy systems. We also describe the results of a comprehensive evaluation exercise undertakenwithin BT, in which the method was applied to a legacy system about to undergo migration. The results of this study indicatedconsiderable success for the method in extracting valid business rules, but also highlighted some weaknesses. Most significantly,the cost of applying the method is a factor of the size and complexity of the system being analysed, and not of the number ofbusiness rules elicited. In order to address this, we propose a cut-down version of the method that can be used to produce a quickestimate of the likely yield of business rules from a program. Together, these two forms of the method aid personnel engaged insystem migration projects in making maximum use of the scarce resources are available for business rule discovery.

A design of public-data platform in digital campus based on web service

The developing of network drive the developing of information systems in campus. More and more business information systems are built in1990's. But most of these systems in campus are developed on different platform without standard. And some data in business information system should be shared between different departments. So the target of this paper is to solve the problem of sharing data in campus the through the web service. Web service is a service-oriented architecture (SOA) to provider service for service consumer. But the traditional model of web service is not suitable in digital campus. This paper designs a new model of web service for digital campus environment. And then a public-data platform is designed to realize the data sharing in heterogeneous systems. Next, the database designing and data processing flow is introduced. Finally, some monitor information of platform is showed.     

Operational support systems for the future

The information services market, emerging from the convergence of telecommunications, information technology, entertainment and other industries, poses serious challenges for operational support systems. Historical ways of understanding and delivering operational support functions will no longer work. Business management functions will increasingly be a major commercial differentiator in the new market. This paper argues that these functions need to be re-defined as business services so that a market can develop in them. It explains a technical approach to defining and building these business services, which is being researched at BT Laboratories, and which uses configurable business objects and intelligent agents. This approach offers the possibility of managing the complexity that the explosion of new information services will bring, and also of opening up exciting new business possibilities.
