The oxygen and water vapor permeability at high relative humidity was studied for composite films formed by incorporation of three different bentonites (MMT) into an ethylene‐modified, water‐soluble poly(vinyl alcohol), EPVOH. The oxygen permeability decreased linearly with an increased addition of hydrophilic MMTs. X‐ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy suggested a homogeneous distribution in the thickness direction with disordered and probably exfoliated structures for hydrophilic MMTs. In contrast, organophilic modified clay showed an intercalated structure with the clay preferentially located at the lower film surface, a combination which was however efficient in reducing the water vapor‐ and oxygen permeabilities at low addition levels. Composite films of EPVOH and Na+‐exchanged MMT resulted in high resistance to dissolution in water, which was ascribed to strong interactions between the components resulting from matching polarities. Annealing the films at 120°C resulted in enhanced resistance to water dissolution and a further reduction in oxygen permeability. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/clay nanocomposites were synthesized using the solution intercalation method. Na ion‐exchanged clays [Na+–saponite (SPT) and Na+–montmorillonite (MMT)] and alkyl ammonium ion‐exchanged clays (C12–MMT and C12OOH–MMT) were used for the PVA nanocomposites. From the morphological studies, the Na ion‐exchanged clay is more easily dispersed in a PVA matrix than is the alkyl ammonium ion‐exchanged clay. Attempts were also made to improve both the thermal stabilities and the tensile properties of PVA/clay nanocomposite films, and it was found that the addition of only a small amount of clay was sufficient for that purpose. Both the ultimate tensile strength and the initial modulus for the nanocomposites increased gradually with clay loading up to 8 wt %. In C12OOH–MMT, the maximum enhancement of the ultimate tensile strength and the initial modulus for the nanocomposites was observed for blends containing 6 wt % organoclay. Na ion‐exchanged clays have higher tensile strengths than those of organic alkyl‐exchanged clays in PVA nanocomposites films. On the other hand, organic alkyl‐exchanged clays have initial moduli that are better than those of Na ion‐exchanged clays. Overall, the content of clay particles in the polymer matrix affect both the thermal stability and the tensile properties of the polymer/clay nanocomposites. However, a change in thermal stability with clay was not significant. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 90: 3208–3214, 2003  相似文献

Nanocomposites of chitosan and nanoclays (MMT‐Na+ and Cloisite 30B) were prepared by solvent casting. The structural properties, thermal behaviors, and mechanical properties were characterized using X‐ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetry analyses, and an Instron universal testing machine. XRD and TEM results indicated that an exfoliated structure was formed with addition of small amounts of MMT‐Na+ to the chitosan matrix. Intercalation along with some exfoliation occurred with up to 5 wt % MMT‐Na+. Micro‐scale composite (tactoids) formed when Cloisite 30B was added to the chitosan matrix. Surface roughness increased with addition of a small amount of clay. Tensile strength of a chitosan film was enhanced and elongation‐at‐break decreased with addition of clay into the chitosan matrix. Melt behavior and thermal stability did not change significantly with addition of clays. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 99: 1684–1691, 2006  相似文献

Soy protein isolate/montmorillonite (SPI/MMT) nanocomposite films were prepared in which MMT was used as a nanofiller at 0, 3, 6, 9, 12, and 15 wt % relative to SPI dry weight. Effects of MMT on film properties including tensile strength, elongation at break, total soluble matter, water vapor permeability, and oxygen permeability were assessed. X‐ray diffraction patterns were determined, and morphologies of SPI and the SPI‐MMT composite films were visualized by scanning electron microscopy. Mechanical and barrier properties were improved by evidenced increases in tensile strength and modulus, and decreases in permeability to water vapor and oxygen. MMT concentrations of 3%–12% were optimal for improving functional properties of the composite films. X‐ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy examinations revealed the formation of an intercalated and exfoliated structure on the addition of MMT into the SPI matrix. We conclude that intercalated and exfoliated MMT silicates enhance mechanical and barrier properties of SPI films. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2010  相似文献

Polyimide (PI)/clay hybrids were synthesized using the in situ solution intercalation method via poly(amic acid). The Na ion‐exchanged clays Na+‐saponite (SPT), Na+‐mica (Mica), and Na+‐montmorillonite (MMT) were used for the intercalation of PI polymer chains. Our dispersion results show that pristine SPT is more easily dispersed in a PI matrix than MMT or Mica. PI nanocomposites were prepared with various SPT contents to examine the variations with SPT content in the range 0–1 wt% of the thermomechanical properties, morphology, and optical transparency of the nanocomposites. The PI films have excellent optical transparencies, and are almost colorless. However, the optical transparency of the PI hybrid films decreases slightly with increases in the clay content. We also examined the relationship between the properties and clay content of the PI hybrid films using wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (XRD) measurements, electronic microscopy (SEM and TEM), and universal tensile machine (UTM). The color intensities of the PI films were evaluated with a spectrophotometer. POLYM. ENG. SCI., 2009. © 2009 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

Polyurethane/clay nanocomposites have been synthesized using Na+‐montmorillonite (Na+‐MMT)/amphiphilic urethane precursor (APU) chains that have hydrophilic polyethylene oxide (PEO) chains and hydrophobic segments at the same molecules. Nanocomposites were synthesized through two different crosslinking polymerization methods. One is UV curing of melt mixed APU/Na+‐MMT mixtures; the other is coalescence polymerization of APU/Na+‐MMT emulsions. These two kinds of composites had intercalated silicate layers of Na+‐montmorillonite by insertion of PEO chains in APU chains, which was confirmed by X‐ray diffraction measurement and transmission electron microscopy. These composite films also showed improved mechanical properties compared to pristine APU films. Although the two kinds of nanocomposites exhibited the same degree of intercalation and were synthesized based on the same precursor chains, these nanocomposite films had the different mechanical properties. Nanocomposites synthesized using APU/Na+‐MMT emulsions, having microphase‐separated structure, had greater tensile strength than those prepared with melt‐mixed APU/Na+‐MMT mixtures. Location of intercalated Na+‐MMT by PEO chains at the oil–water interface also could be confirmed by rheological behavior of the APU/Na+‐MMT/water mixture. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Films of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/sodium montmorillonite (Na+‐MMT) nanocomposites have been successfully prepared utilizing Na+‐MMT by N,N‐dimethylformamide solution casting. The nanocomposite films show high transparency, enhanced thermal resistance, and mechanical properties in comparison with the neat polymer film. The transparency of the films was investigated by UV‐vis spectra. The exfoliated dispersion of Na+‐MMT platelets in nanocomposites were investigated by X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The enhanced thermal resistance and mechanical properties of PMMA were studied by thermal gravimetric analysis and dynamic mechanical analysis, respectively. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, nanocomposites with simultaneous dispersion of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and montmorillonite clays in an epoxy matrix were prepared by in situ polymerization. A high energy sonication was employed as the dispersion method, without the aid of solvents in the process. The simultaneous dispersion of clays with carbon nanotubes (CNT) in different polymeric matrices has shown a synergic potential of increasing mechanical properties and electrical conductivity. Two different montmorillonite clays were used: a natural (MMT‐Na+) and an organoclay (MMT‐30B). The nanocomposites had their electrical conductivity (σ) and dielectric constant (εr) measured by impedance spectroscopy. The sharp increase in electrical conductivity was found between 0.10 and 0.25 wt% of the MWCNTs. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of the samples showed a lower tendency of MWCNT segregation on the MMT‐30B clay surface, which is connected to intercalation/exfoliation in the matrix, that generates less free volume available for MWCNTs in the epoxy matrix. Data from electrical measurement showed that simultaneously adding organoclay reduces the electrical conduction in the nanocomposite. Moreover, conductivity and permittivity dispersion in low frequency suggest agglomeration of nanotubes surrounding the natural clay (MMT‐Na+) particles, which is confirmed by TEM. POLYM. Acrylic copolymer/montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposites for warp sizing were prepared in the presence of Na+‐MMT by the in situ intercalative polymerization of acrylic acid, acrylamide, and methyl acrylate in water solution. The properties of the solution and cast film were tested according to an application in sizing process of the nanocomposite size with various MMT contents. The results indicate that, for an exfoliated structure corresponding to the MMT content increasing to 7 wt %, the performance parameters of solution viscosity, glass‐transition temperature, and tensile strength of the film increased and the moisture sorption, abrasion loss, and elongation at break of the film decreased. When the intercalated structure of MMT was 9 wt %, the gathered MMT layers acted as a common inorganic filler in the copolymer matrix, with limited contribution to the properties of the composite. The adhesion work of the nanocomposite solution was calculated by use of the Young–Dupre relation, which showed maximum values at an MMT content of 3 wt % on the surfaces of both the polyester and cellulose films. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Biodegradable thermoplastic starch (TPS)/clay hybrids were prepared by melt intercalation. Three organically modified montmorillonite (MMT) with different ammonium cations and one unmodified Na+ MMT (Cloisite Na+) were used. Cloisite Na+ showed the best dispersion in the TPS matrix. It was observed that the TPS/Cloisite Na+ hybrid showed an intercalation of TPS in the silicate layer due to the matching of the surface polarity and interactions of the Cloisite Na+ and the TPS, which gives higher tensile strength and better barrier properties to water vapor as compared to the other TPS/organoclay hybrids as well as the pristine TPS. It was found that the dynamic mechanical properties of the TPS/clay hybrids were also affected by the polar interactions.  相似文献

On the basis of the fusion behavior of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), the influence of compounding route on the properties of PVC/(layered silicate) nanocomposites was studied. Four different compounding addition sequences were examined during the melt compounding of PVC with montmorillonite (MMT) clay, including (a) a direct dry mixing of PVC and nanoclay, (b) an addition of nanoclay at compaction, (c) an addition of nanoclay at the onset of fusion, and (d) an addition of nanoclay at equilibrium torque. Both unmodified sodium montmorillonite (Na+‐MMT) and organically modified montmorillonite (Org.‐MMT) clays were used, and the effect of the addition sequence of the clay during compounding on its dispersion in the matrix was evaluated by X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron miscroscopy. The surface color change, dynamic mechanical analysis, and flexural and tensile properties of PVC/clay nanocomposites were also studied. The experimental results indicated that both the extent of property improvement and the dispersion of nanoparticles in PVC/(layered silicate) nanocomposites are strongly influenced by the degree of gelation achieved in PVC compounds during processing. The addition of nanoclay to PVC must be accomplished at the onset of fusion, when PVC particles are reduced in size, in order to produce nanocomposites with better nanodispersion and enhanced mechanical properties. Overall, rigid PVC nanocomposites with unmodified clay (Na+‐MMT) were more thermally stable and exhibited better mechanical properties than their counterparts with organically modified clay (Org.‐MMT). A series of polyaniline (PANI)/Na+-montmorillonite (MMT) clay and PANI/organo-MMT nanocomposite materials have been successfully prepared by in situ emulsion polymerization in the presence of inorganic nanolayers of hydrophilic Na+-MMT clay or organophilic organo-MMT clay with DBSA and KPS as surfactant and initiator, respectively. The as-synthesized Na+-PCN and organo-PCN materials were characterized and compared by Fourier transformation infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, wide-angle powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM).Na+-PCN materials in the form of coatings with low loading of Na+-MMT clay (e.g., 3 wt.%, CLAN3) on cold-rolled steel (CRS) were found much superior in corrosion protection over those of organo-PCN materials with same clay loading based on a series of electrochemical measurements of corrosion potential, polarization resistance, corrosion current and impedance spectroscopy in 5 wt.% aqueous NaCl electrolyte. The molecular weights of PANI extracted from PCN materials and neat PANI were determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) with NMP as eluant. Effects of material composition on the gas permeability, optical properties and electrical conductivity of neat PANI and a series of PCN materials, in the form of free-standing film, solution and powder-pressed pellet, were also studied by gas permeability analyzer (GPA), ultraviolet-vis spectra and four-point probe technique, respectively.  相似文献

The effect of clay concentration on the oxygen permeability and optical properties of a modified poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVOH) was studied. Sodium montmorrilonite (MMT‐Na+), at a concentration of 10 wt %, was found to decrease the oxygen permeability of the PVOH below 0.001 cc · mil/m2/day at 55% relative humidity. This low permeability is attributed to the strong interaction between PVOH and clay, as evidenced by an increase of more than 10°C in the glass transition temperature at this concentration. Transmission electron microscopy images show the high level of clay exfoliation that results from the strong affinity to PVOH. Haze and clarity were optical properties that changed significantly with increasing clay concentration. These values were 0.4 and 100%, respectively, in the absence of clay, but became 80 and 23% with 10 wt % MMT‐Na+. Transmission did not change as considerably, reaching a low of 73% with a clay concentration of 10 wt %. The ability to reduce the oxygen permeability of PVOH‐based systems at elevated humidity may prove advantageous for applications in food and flexible electronics packaging, where moisture sensitivity currently prevents them from being used. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nanocomposite (NC) gels based on natural rubber (NR) and styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) were prepared by using a unique latex blending technique. These NC gels were prepared by first blending the water swollen unmodified montmorillonite clay (Na+‐MMT) suspension into the respective latices followed by prevulcanization to generate crosslinked nanogels. Use of water assisted fully delaminated Na+‐MMT suspension resulted in predominantly exfoliated morphology in the NC gels, as revealed by X‐ray diffraction study and transmission electron microscopy. Addition of Na+‐MMT significantly improved various physical, mechanical and thermal properties of these NC gels. For example, 6 phr of Na+‐MMT loaded NR based NC gels registered 54% and 200% increase in tensile strength and Young's modulus, respectively, compared to the unfilled NR gels. SBR based NC gels also showed similar level of improvement in mechanical properties. Mechanical properties of NC gels prepared using this route were also compared with the NC gels prepared by co‐coagulation and conventional curing technique and found to be superior. In the case of dynamic mechanical properties, NC gels showed higher glass transition temperatures along with a concomitant increase in storage moduli, compared to the unfilled gels. These Na+‐MMT reinforced NC gels also exhibited markedly improved thermal stability. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2010  相似文献

Chitosan (CS)/montmorillonite‐K10 (MMTK‐10) clay composite films with different amounts of the clay MMTK‐10 (0.5, 1, 2.5, and 5%) were prepared using a solution‐casting method, and their properties were determined. The objective of this study is to prepare CS/clay nanocomposites and then to investigate the effects of clay content on mechanical, barrier, and thermal properties of these nanocomposites. The prepared films were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction analysis, transmission electron microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Barrier properties (oxygen and water permeability), mechanical properties (tensile strength and elongation), and thermal behaviors (thermogravimetric analysis) were investigated and compared. The water vapor and gas permeability values of the composite films decreased significantly with increasing filler concentration. Tensile strength of the composites increased significantly with the addition of clay, and elongation at break decreased with increasing clay concentration. The tensile strength of nanocomposites is up to 34.82 MPa for 5 wt% clay content, and the tensile modulus shows a 74.63% higher value than that of neat CS. The resulting films had an opaque appearance, which depended on the amount of MMTK‐10 added. The oxygen permeability decreased with the increase in MMTK‐10. The minimum oxygen permeability (1.54 cm3/m2 day atm) was recorded for film with 5% MMTK‐10. The water permeability of the composite films decreased significantly between 13 and 22% when clay was added. The dispersed clay improves the thermal stability and enhances the hardness and elastic modulus of the matrix systematically with the increased loading of clay. POLYM. The dispersion of MMT‐Na+ (montmorillonite) layers in a chitosan polymer matrix, using the homogenization, was performed. The effect of shear rate was characterized on the mechanical, barrier, and structural properties of nanocomposites. Elongation at break (EAB) was unaffected by shear rate, which decreased after homogenization, increased above 13,000 rpm, however, tensile strength (TS) dramatically increased up to 59 MPa at 16,000 rpm. Water vapor permeability (WVP) and oxygen permeability (OP) of the homogenized nanocomposite decreased more than that of untreated nanocomposite and OP was not significantly changed above 16,000 rpm of shear rate. XRD result and TEM images indicated that three types of tactoids, exfoliation, and intercalation were generated and the largest distance of 18.87 Å between MMT‐Na+ layers was produced at 16,000 rpm. The results indicate that homogenization was a beneficial method for effectively dispersing MMT‐Na+ layers in a chitosan polymer matrix and that a shear rate of 16,000 rpm was the effective condition. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, layered clay/polymer nanocomposites were developed based on epoxy resins and montmorillonite as the nanoplatelet reinforcement. Clay particles were treated with hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride (HTCA) through an ion exchange reaction. In this way, Na+ interlayer cations of the clay is exchanged with onium cation of the surfactant that turns the hydrophilic clays (MMT) to organophilic (OMMT) characteristics. Thermal analysis results revealed that the glass transition temperature (Tg) and the dynamic mechanical properties including the storage and loss modulus of the neat epoxy resin increases by the incorporation of clay particles. It was also found that flame resistance of the polymer is improved by the addition of the clay particles. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2008  相似文献

A series of clay-based superabsorbent composite from acrylamide (AM) and various clays, such as attapulgite, kaolinite, mica, vermiculate and Na+-montmorillonite, was prepared by free-radical aqueous polymerization, using N,N′-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as a crosslinker and ammonium persulfate (APS) as an initiator, and then saponified with sodium hydroxide solution. In this paper, the reaction mechanism and thermal stability of the superabsorbent composites incorporated with various clays were characterized by FTIR, XRD and TGA, respectively. The effects of clay kind and clay content on equilibrium water absorbency of these composites were also investigated and compared. In addition, the influences of clay kind on comprehensive swelling behaviors of the PAM/clay superabsorbent composites were studied. The results indicated that the introduced clays could influence physicochemical properties of obtained superabsorbent composites. Mica could improve thermal stability of corresponding superabsorbent composites to the highest degree comparing with the other clays. The PAM/clay superabsorbent composites incorporated with 10 wt% clay of various kinds were all endowed with equilibrium water absorbency of more than 1300 g g−1. The equilibrium water absorbency decreases with increasing clay content and correlates with the kind of clay. Attapulgite-based superabsorbent composite was endowed with higher water absorbency in univalent cationic saline solution, however, the vermiculite- and the kaolinite-based ones acquired the highest water absorbency in CaCl2 and FeCl3 aqueous solution, respectively. Moreover, the superabsorbent composites incorporated with Na+-montmorillonite have higher swelling rate and that of doped with mica was endowed with higher reswelling capability.  相似文献

The addition of clay to polymers has the combined effects of enhancing both the strength/stiffness and the barrier properties. This investigation presents a novel approach to further enhance the strength/stiffness of cast plasticized amylopectin (AP)/Na+‐montmorillonite clay films using a water‐soluble coupling agent, poly[(isobutylene‐alt‐maleic acid, ammonium salt)‐co‐(isobutylene‐alt‐maleic anhydride)], between the filler and the matrix. The addition of clay increased the strength and stiffness of the film and the addition of 0.4 parts of a coupling agent per 1 part clay further increased these properties. The trends were the same after each treatment, and there were always significant differences in stiffness and strength between the films without clay and with clay with 0.4 parts of the coupling agent. The increase in stiffness/strength in the presence of a small amount of the coupling agent suggested that it had a bridging effect, presumably through strong secondary bonds to the clay and to the matrix. Infrared spectroscopy and moisture swelling experiments indicated that ester bonds were formed between the coupling agent and AP. X‐ray spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy revealed that the clay‐particle/polymer structure was qualitatively independent of the presence of the coupling agent showing a mixture of intercalated clay stacks and exfoliated platelets. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Summary: Linear low‐density polyethylene (LLDPE)/clay nanocomposites are obtained and studied by using a zinc‐neutralized carboxylate ionomer as a compatibilizer. LLDPE‐g‐MA is used as a reference compatibilizer. Two different clays, natural montmorillonite (Closite Na+) and a chemically modified clay Closite 20A have been used. Nanocomposites are prepared by melt blending in a twin‐screw extruder using two mixing methods: two‐step mixing and one‐step mixing. The relative influence of each compatibilizer is determined by wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction structural analysis and mechanical properties. The results are analyzed in terms of the effect of the compatibilizing agent and incorporation method in the clay dispersion, and the mechanical properties of the nanocomposites. Experimental results confirm that the film samples with ionomer show a good mechanical performance only slightly below that of the samples with maleic anhydride (MA). The two‐step mixing conditions result in better dispersion and intercalation for the nanofillers than one‐step mixing. The exfoliation of clay platelets leads to an improved thermal stability of the composite. The oxygen permeability of the clay nanocomposites, using ionomer as a compatibilizer, is decreased by the addition of the clay.
