Tractor driving imposes a lot of physical and mental stress upon the operator. If the operator's seat is not comfortable, his work performance may be poor and there is also a possibility of accidents. The optimal design of tractor seat may be achieved by integrating anthropometric data with other technical features of the design. This paper reviews the existing information on the tractor seat design that considers anthropometry and biomechanical factors and gives an approach for seat design based on anthropometric data. The anthropometric dimensions, i.e. popliteal height sitting (5th percentile), hip breadth sitting (95th percentile), buttock popliteal length (5th percentile), interscye breadth (5th and 95th percentile) and sitting acromion height (5th percentile) of agricultural workers need to be taken into consideration for design of seat height, seat pan width, seat pan length, seat backrest width and seat backrest height, respectively, of a tractor. The seat dimensions recommended for tractor operator's comfort based on anthropometric data of 5434 Indian male agricultural workers were as follows: seat height of 380 mm, seat pan width of 420–450 mm, seat backrest width of 380–400 mm (bottom) and 270–290 mm (top), seat pan length of 370±10 mm, seat pan tilt of 5–7° backward and seat backrest height of 350 mm.

Relevance to industry

The approach presented in this paper for tractor seat design based on anthropometric considerations will help the tractor seat designers to develop and introduce seats suiting to the requirements of the user population. This will not only enhance the comfort of the tractor operators but may also help to reduce the occupational health problems of tractor operators.  相似文献

This study determined how backrest inclination and the frequency of vibration influence the perception and discomfort of vibration applied parallel to the back (vertical vibration when sitting upright, horizontal vibration when recumbent). Subjects experienced backrest vibration at frequencies in the range 2.5 to 25 Hz at vibration magnitudes up to 24 dB above threshold. Absolute thresholds, equivalent comfort contours, and the principal locations for feeling vibration were determined with four backrest inclinations: 0° (upright), 30°, 60° and 90° (recumbent). With all backrest inclinations, acceleration thresholds and equivalent comfort contours were similar and increased with increasing frequency at 6 dB per octave (i.e. velocity constant). It is concluded that backrest inclination has little effect on the frequency dependence of thresholds and equivalent comfort contours for vibration applied along the back, and that the W d frequency weighting in current standards is appropriate for evaluating z-axis vibration of the back at all backrest inclinations.

Statement of Relevance: To minimise the vibration discomfort of seated people, it is necessary to understand how discomfort varies with backrest inclination. It is concluded that the vibration on backrests can be measured using a pad between the backrest and the back, so that it reclines with the backrest, and the measured vibration evaluated without correcting for the backrest inclination.  相似文献

Seat pitch, defined as the distance from a point on the back of one seat to the same point on the seat in front, is one of the most important factors influencing aircraft seating comfort. This study assessed the influence of different airline seat pitches on subjective ratings of discomfort and body-seat interface contact pressures. This was a laboratory within-subjects study using an aircraft interior mock up to vary seat pitch. Twelve participants completed 1 h of sitting in each of five different seat pitches (28inches, 30inches, 32inches, 34inches, and 36inches). Interface pressure mats measured seat and backrest pressure distribution, subjective rating scales were used to measure overall and local body region discomfort. The results showed that overall body and local body region discomfort ratings tend to be lower when the seat pitch increased from 28 inches to 36 inches (p < 0.05). For pressure variables, the upper back average contact area, upper/lower back average contact pressure, upper/lower back average peak contact pressure, right buttock average contact area, left/right thigh buttock average peak contact pressure, and left buttock average peak contact pressure were significantly affected by seat pitch(p < 0.05). Separate analyses support that seat pitch was more strongly correlated with backrest interface pressure than with seat pan pressure. In conclusion, seat pitch was found to be an important factor associated with body-seat contact pressure and discomfort ratings.  相似文献

The perception of vehicle ride comfort is influenced by the dynamic performance of full-depth foam used in many vehicle seats. The effects of the thickness of foam on the dynamic stiffness (i.e., stiffness and damping as a function of frequency) of foam cushions with three thicknesses (60, 80, and 100 mm), and the vibration transmitted through these cushions at the seat pan and the backrest were measured with 12 subjects (6 males and 6 females). With increasing thickness, the stiffness and the damping of the foam decreased. With increasing thickness of foam at the seat pan, the resonance frequencies around 4 Hz in the vertical in-line and fore-and-aft cross-axis transmissibilities of the seat pan cushion and the backrest cushion decreased. For the conditions investigated, it is concluded that the thickness of foam at a vertical backrest has little effect on the vertical in-line or fore-and-aft cross-axis transmissibilities of the foam at either the seat pan or the backrest. The frequencies of the primary resonances around 4 Hz in the vertical in-line transmissibility and the fore-and-aft cross-axis transmissibility of foam at the seat pan were highly correlated. Compared to sitting on a rigid seat pan with a foam backrest, sitting with foam at both the seat pan and the backrest reduced the resonance frequency in the vertical in-line transmissibility of the backrest foam and increased the associated transmissibility at resonance, while the fore-and-aft cross-axis transmissibility of the backrest was little affected. Compared to sitting without a backrest, sitting with a rigid vertical backrest increased the resonance frequency of the fore-and-aft cross-axis transmissibility of the seat pan cushion and increased the transmissibility at resonance.Relevance to industryThe transmissibility of a seat is determined by the dynamic properties of the occupant of the seat and the dynamic properties of the seat. This study shows how the thicknesses of foam at a seat pan and foam at a backrest affect the in-line and cross-axis transmissibilities of the foams at the seat pan and the backrest. The findings have application to the design of vehicle seats to minimise the transmission of vibration to the body.  相似文献

The efficiency of suspension seat can be influenced by several factors such as the input vibration, the dynamic characteristics of the seat and the dynamic characteristics of the human body. The objective of this paper is to study the effect of sitting postures and vibration magnitude on the vibration transmissibility of a suspension system of an agricultural tractor seat. Eleven (11) healthy male subjects participated in the study. All subjects were asked to sit on the suspension system. Four (4) different sitting postures were investigated – i) “relax”, ii) “slouch”, iii) “tense”, and iv) “with backrest support”. All subjects were exposed to random vertical vibration in the range of 1–20 Hz, at three vibration magnitudes - 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 m/s2 r.m.s for 60 s. The results showed that there were three pronounced peaks in the seat transmissibility, with the primary resonance was found at 1.75–2.5 Hz for every sitting postures. The “backrest” condition had the highest transmissibility resonance (1.46), while the “slouch” posture had the highest Seat Effective Amplitude Transmissibility (SEAT) values (64.7%). Changes in vibration magnitude for “relax” posture from 0.5 to 2.0 m/s2 r.m.s resulted in greater reduction in the primary resonance frequency of seat transmissibility. The SEAT values decreased with increased vibration magnitude. It can be suggested that variations in posture and vibration magnitude affected the vibration transmission through the suspension system, indicating the non-linear effect on the interaction between the human body and the suspension system.Relevance to industry: Investigating the posture adopted during agricultural activities, and the effects of various magnitudes of vibration on the suspension system's performance are beneficial to the industry. The findings regarding their influence on the human body may be used to optimize the suspension system's performance.  相似文献

The influence of whole-body vertical vibration on the dynamic human–seat interface pressure is investigated using a flexible grid of pressure sensors. The ischium pressure and the overall pressure distribution at the human–seat interface are evaluated as functions of the magnitude and frequency of vibration excitation, and seated posture and height. The dynamic pressure at the seat surface is measured under sinusoidal vertical vibration of different magnitudes in the 1–10 Hz frequency range. Two methods based on ischium pressure and ischium force are proposed to study the influence of seat height, posture and characteristics of vibration. The results of the study reveal that the amplitude of dynamic pressure component increases with an increase in the excitation amplitude in almost entire frequency range considered in this study. The dynamic components of both the ischium pressure and the ischium force reveal peaks in the 4 to 5 Hz frequency band, the range of primary resonant frequency of the seated human body in the vertical mode. The mean values of the dynamic ischium pressure and the ischium force remain constant, irrespective of the excitation frequency and amplitude. The magnitudes of mean pressure and force at the human–seat interface, however, are dependent upon the seat height and the subject's posture. The inter-subject variability of the static ischium pressure and effective contact area are presented as functions of the subject weight and subject weight-to-height ratio. It was found that heavy subjects tend to induce low ischium pressure as a result of increased effective contact area.

Relevance to industry

Pressure distribution at the human–seat interface has been found to be an important factor affecting the seating comfort and work efficiency of various workers. The study of human–seat interface pressure distribution under vibration is specifically critical to the comfort, work efficiency and health of vehicle drivers, who are regularly exposed to vibration. The results reported in this paper will be useful to study dynamic response of the interface pressure and design vehicle seats.  相似文献

Changes in the seating condition may change the body posture which could affect the transmission of vibration through a vehicle seat. This study investigates the effect of different seating conditions on the transmission of vibration through a car seat. Ten male subjects sat on the passenger seat of a sedan car driven at 60 km/h adopting one of six conditions at a time. The VDV was measured on the seat and backrest. Backrest contact affected the VDV measured on the seat pan in the z- and y-axis only. Increasing the backrest angle increased the VDV at the backrest in the x-direction and reduced the VDV at the backrest in the z-direction. With the increase in the backrest angle, the total VDV at the backrest became higher than the total VDV on the seat pan. The study showed no effect of foot position and contact with a headrest on the VDVs.Relevance to industryThis research presents the effect of the seating condition on the transmission of vibration through the seat pan and backrest of a car seat. Research of this kind may help seat manufacturers recommend seating conditions that reduce discomfort caused by whole-body vibration.  相似文献

This study determined how backrest inclination and the frequency and magnitude of vertical seat vibration influence vibration discomfort. Subjects experienced vertical seat vibration at frequencies in the range 2.5-25 Hz at vibration magnitudes in the range 0.016-2.0 ms(-2) r.m.s. Equivalent comfort contours were determined with five backrest conditions: no backrest, and with a stationary backrest inclined at 0° (upright), 30°, 60° and 90°. Within all conditions, the frequency of greatest sensitivity to acceleration decreased with increasing vibration magnitude. Compared to an upright backrest, around the main resonance of the body, the vibration magnitudes required to cause similar discomfort were 100% greater with 60° and 90° backrest inclinations and 50% greater with a 30° backrest inclination. It is concluded that no single frequency weighting provides an accurate prediction of the discomfort caused by vertical seat vibration at all magnitudes and with all backrest conditions. PRACTITIONER SUMMARY: Vertical seat vibration is a main cause of vibration discomfort for drivers and passengers of road vehicles. A frequency weighting has been standardised for the evaluation of vertical seat vibration when sitting upright but it was not known whether this weighting is suitable for the reclined sitting postures often adopted during travel.  相似文献

Maintaining correct sitting posture is highly likely by simply informing seated people of their current sitting postures. Few studies have simultaneously applied load distribution measurements and sitting posture feedback to measure bodily pressure distribution. Commercialization of sitting posture monitoring systems has been difficult due to high cost. This study tested a system that measures load on the seat pan and load transferred to the backrest using four load cells installed on the seat pan. Three body weight ratios were calculated and differences in body weight ratios were tested among six sitting postures. The results were considered highly reliable based on strong correlations among three instruments’ results despite differences in force plate and dead load between the results of the monitoring system and the load-measuring system. The findings encourage commercialization and future research that includes gender and physical characteristic differences.  相似文献

After discussing the distribution of forces in the stable upright posture and illustrating the importance of the lumbar lordosis for minimising muscular effort in this position, the loadings on the spine and muscles of the back are outlined during upright sitting. It is shown that the backrest locates the lumbar spine so that the CG of the superincumbent body parts can be positioned above the vertebrae, permitting the gravity load to be transmitted to the seat without the counteracting torques which muscles would have to provide if this position was not adopted. The forces arising from other sitting positions are then discussed, and some conclusions drawn for seat design.  相似文献

The present work investigates the contact forces between sitters and seat as well as their correlations with perceived discomfort. Twelve different economy class aeroplane seat configurations were simulated using a multi-adjustable experimental seat by varying seat pan and backrest angles, as well as seat pan compressed surface. Eighteen males and 18 females, selected by their body mass index and stature, tested these configurations for two sitting postures. Perceived discomfort was significantly affected by seat parameters and posture and correlated both with normal force distribution on the seat-pan surface and with normal forces at the lumbar and head supports. Lower discomfort ratings were obtained for more evenly distributed normal forces on the seat pan. Shear force at the seat pan surface was at its lowest when sitters were allowed to self-select their seat-pan angle, supporting that a shear force should be reduced but not zeroed to improve seating comfort.

Practitioner Summary: The effects of seat-pan and backrest angle, anthropometric dimensions and sitting posture on contact forces and perceived discomfort were investigated using a multi-adjustable experimental seat. In addition to preferred seat profile parameters, the present work provides quantitative guidelines on contact force requirement for improving seating comfort.  相似文献

Nowadays, low back pain becomes a common healthcare problem. Poor or unsuitable seat design is related to the discomfort and other healthcare problems of users. The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of seat design variables on the compressive loadings of lumbar joints. A basis that includes a musculoskeletal human body model and a chair model has been developed using LifeMOD Biomechanics Modeller. Inverse and forward dynamic simulations have been performed for various seat design parameters. The results show that the inclination of backrest and seat pan may or may not decrease the compressive spinal joint forces, depending on other conditions. The medium‐level height and depth of seat pan and the medium‐level and high‐level height of backrest are found to cause the minimum compressive loads on lumbar joints. This work contributes to a better understanding of sitting biomechanics and provides some useful guidelines for seat design.  相似文献

Harvesting operation with agricultural combines imposes excessive physical loads on the operators and the poorly designed seats may be an important contributory factor in this regard. This aims of this field study were to evaluate the possible mismatch between seat dimensions of existing harvesting combines and anthropometric characteristics of 200 Iranian operators and to propose seat dimensions based on anthropometric principles. The anthropometric dimensions of each individual operator were compared to the relative seat dimensions using the equations proposed in the literature. The results showed a considerable mismatch for different seat dimensions including upper backrest width (100%), seat height (97%), armrest height (83.7%), seat width (52.8%), lower backrest width (40.6%) and seat depth (39.5%). This meant that the existing combine seats were too high, too narrow and too shallow and had armrests and backrests which did not match with body dimensions of the majority of the operators. It was shown that compared to the existing designs, the new proposed dimensions (including seat height = 400 mm, seat width = 450 mm, seat depth = 410 mm, armrest height = 290 mm, backrest height = 420 mm, upper backrest width = 360 mm and lower backrest width = 400 mm) better matched to the operator's anthropometry, with the match percentages ranging from 77% to 100%.Relevance to industryThe design and manufacturing of agricultural machinery should be made based on the anthropometric characteristics of actual users to avoid unnecessary demands on them. This study provide additional data on the operator's anthropometry that can be used as a starting point for designing more appropriate agricultural machinery or used by other researchers in the field.  相似文献

The effects on discomfort of the frequency and direction of the translational vibration of a footrest and flat firm backrest have been studied in two experiments. At frequencies in the range 2.5-63 Hz, the first experiment determined the levels of fore-and-aft, lateral and vertical vibration of the feet of seated subjects which caused them discomfort equivalent to that from 0.8 m/s2 r.m.s. 10 Hz vertical vibration of a firm flat seat. The levels of fore-and-aft, lateral and vertical vibration at the back of a seat which were equivalent to 0.8 m/s2 r.m.s. 10 Hz vertical seat vibration were determined in the second experiment. The vibration of the feet or back occurred without simultaneous vibration at the seat.

Individual and group equivalent comfort contours are presented. It is concluded that the data provide a useful initial indication of the relative contribution of foot and back vibration to discomfort. Equivalent comfort contours for foot vibration were similar for all three directions of vibration. The contours for vibration of the back show a high sensitivity to fore-and-aft vibration. The results obtained from two additional studies show that vibration from a backrest and other variations in seating conditions can influence subject comfort.  相似文献

A biomechanical model is important for prediction of loads likely to arise in specific body parts under various conditions. The biomechanical model was developed to predict compressive and shear loads at L4/L5 (lumbar vertebra) of a tractor operator seating on seats with selected seat pan and backrest cushion materials. A computer program was written to solve the model for various inputs viz. stature and weight of the tractor operators, choice of operating conditions, and reaction forces from seat pan and backrest cushions. It was observed that maximum compressive and shear forces ranged 943–1367 N and 422–991 N, respectively at L4/L5 of tractor operators steering the tractor with leg and hand control actions and occasionally viewing the implement at back. The compressive forces were maximum (1202–1367 N) with coir based composite seat backrest cushion materials (thickness of 80 mm, density of 47.19 kg/m3) and were minimum (943–1108 N) with high density polyurethane foam (thickness of 44 mm, density of 19.09 kg/m3) for the seats.Relevance to industryThe biomechanical model of a tractor operator is important for theoretical understanding the problem of sitting and is also valuable in prediction of compressive and shear loads at L4/L5 of operator under various operating conditions. The aim of the study was to investigate the magnitude of spinal shrinkage during video display unit (VDU) work when subjects were sitting on chairs with different design with forward-sloping seats with or without backrest, armrest or knee support and when using a conventional chair with horizontal seat. Three different chairs were investigated: A “Conventional chair” with horizontal seat, B “Ullman chair” with front half of seat sloping forward and back half horizontal, and C “Balans chair” with forward-sloping seat plus knee support. Eight healthy subjects used to professional VDU work volunteered to participate in this field study, which was performed at their own workplaces. The median shrinkage after a three-hour period was 1.3, 1.8 and 3.1 mm for chairs A, B and C, respectively. All subjects shrank more (p < 0.05) when sitting on the chair with knee support (C) than when sitting on the conventional chair. There was no statistically significant difference in shrinkage between chairs A and B, or between chairs B and C.  相似文献

The transmissibility of seat depends on the dynamics of both the seat and the human body, and shows how the amplification and attenuation of vibration varies with the frequency of vibration. A systematic methodology was developed for finite element (FE) modelling of the dynamic interaction between a seat and the human body and predicting the transmissibility of a seat. A seat model was developed to improve computational efficiency before models of the seat pan and backrest were calibrated separately using load–deflection and dynamic stiffness measurements, joined to form the complete seat model, and integrated with the model of a manikin for further calibration. The calibrated seat model was combined with a human body model to predict the transmissibility of the seat. By combining a calibrated seat model with a calibrated human body model, and defining appropriate contacts between the two models, the vibration transmissibility with a seat–occupant system can be predicted.  相似文献

We used 3 psychophysics methods to determine perceptible changes in seat height, seat pan angle, and backrest angle using an experimental chair. In the method of adjustment, the chosen chair settings were affected by the initial setting. For example, a high initial setting of the seat height led to a high selected setting and a low setting led to a low value. The difference between settings was referred to as not noticeable difference (NND). The method of limits was used to determine acceptable chair settings using verbal limits such as "too high" and "too low." Using the method of constant stimuli, just noticeable differences (JNDs) were determined for chair height (1.5 cm), seat pan angle (1.2 degrees) and backrest angle (1.7 degrees). The corresponding values for NNDs and verbal limits were about twice as large: chair height (2.5 cm), seat pan angle (4 degrees) and backrest angle (3 degrees). NNDs and verbal limits are unobtrusive measures that are considered more valid than JNDs, which exaggerate the need for adjustability. The results have practical implications for the design of office chairs.  相似文献

Despite the high level of automation in semiconductor manufacturing processes, many manual operations are still involved in the workplace. Due to inadequate human–machine interface design, stairs are frequently used to help operators perform wafer-handling tasks. This study was designed to evaluate the effects of climbing stairs and carrying wafer containers (pods) on psychophysical responses (maximal acceptable weight of lift—MAWL, and ratings of perceived exertion—RPE), physiological responses (oxygen consumption—VO2, and heart rate—HR), and wrist posture (ulnar and radial deviations). Each of 12 subjects (six males and six females) performed six sessions (3 climbing stairs×2 pods types). The results indicate that climbing stairs had a significant influence on MAWL and VO2 (p<0.01). The type of pod effect on wrist posture was significant (p<0.01). Gender effect differences on MAWL, VO2 and wrist posture were also significant (p<0.05). Job design implications are discussed.  相似文献

Ten subjects were asked to apply maximum torques on knife handles with either their bare hand or their hand wearing a Kevlar fibre protective glove. Four knife handles (2 roughnesses, 2 hardnesses) were tested. Surface electromyograms of 6 upper limb and shoulder muscles were recorded and subject opinions on both knife handle hardness and friction in the hand were also assessed. The results revealed the significant influence of wearing gloves (p<0.0001), knife type (p<0.0005) and handle hardness (p<0.005) on the applied torque. Wearing Kevlar fibre gloves greatly increased the torque independently of the other two parameters. Under the bare hand condition, a 90° ShA slightly rough handle provided the greatest torque. Subject opinion agreed with the observed effects on recorded torque values except for the hardness factor, for which a preference for the 70° ShA value over the 90° ShA value emerged.  相似文献
