Process engineers at an automobile assembly plant wanted to develop a model for on-line process control in an assembly line. During an experiment to estimate the model, an uncontrollable variable was discovered to have a significant effect, but its values in the experiment were not representative of values in actual production. Through this case study, we present design criteria and assess sampling strategies for augmenting a factorial experiment to incorporate an additional factor that was found to be an uncontrollable independent normally distributed random variable. Our results demonstrate the potential improvement in on-line process control when experiments are augmented using these design criteria.  相似文献

Pitting corrosion of structural steel used in an evaporator vessel for the sugar industry has been investigated. A significant number of inclusion stringers and a banded microstructure in the ordinary mild steel used were main reasons the pitting initiated. A low-carbon (0.08% C max) copper-bearing structural steel processed by a modified rolling practice that included intensive cross rolling was developed to minimize the incidence of pitting in such vessels.  相似文献

The present research investigates the development of new products within cultural and creative industries resulting from the use of traditional elements. In particular, we analyse methods facilitating the recombination of traditional elements into new products. Accordingly, we conducted an inductive qualitative research, based on five case studies represented by Italian restaurants awarded with three Michelin stars. Findings reveal how traditional elements may be combined with elements coming from different and distant cultures. In addition, the elements of tradition may be the only source of innovation if atypical links are established among them. Our results mainly contribute to shed new light on the dynamics which allow to achieve the equilibrium between familiarity and novelty in cultural and creative industries where products suffer a rapid obsolescence. Finally, we advance the debate on tensions created by the inclusion of novelties in traditions by proposing method facilitating combinations.  相似文献

In a spinning mill, yarn is the final product. Linear density expressed in terms of count is one of the important characteristics of yarn. Because variability of textile strands increases as the linear density increases, the variability in the count is often measured in terms of coefficient of variation (CV)%. The yarn with a high CV% of count leads to a higher end breakage rate during the spinning and subsequent weaving/knitting operations, and consequently, results in lesser productivity and poorer appearance quality of the woven/knitted fabric. When this woven/knitted fabric is dyed, uneven shades are generated. Because the production of yarn involves processing of raw cotton in multimachines at multistages, possible sources that lead to a high CV% of count are many. Enrick's (1960) analysis procedure, which is based on the modification of the range method for analysis of variance, is used conventionally for detecting the stages where excessive “between-machine” differences are present. When the CV% of count is inflated due to the generation of systematic variation in any machine or introduction of high variability by any machine, this inflation remains undetected when using Enrick's procedure. The case study presented here demonstrates that a step-by-step analysis of linear densities of different stage-outputs starting from yarn to card sliver, using appropriate nested design models along with Duncan's multiple range test, is very useful in detecting all possible sources of a high CV% of count of yarn.  相似文献

A variety of materials are used in the Oil & Gas industry ranging from carbon steel, stainless steel to nickel alloys, etc. including non-metallic materials as well. Amongst these, carbon steel is the industry favorite because of many of its desirable attributes like machinability, weldability, availability, and cost. Wide use of carbon steel in the industry is also due to the presence of required properties for the specific application. In spite of carbon steel’s wide uses, poor workmanship, improper heat treatment, or negligent manufacturing processes can reduce its service life and also can lead to unexpected failures. One such failure case involves carbon steel plate meant for construction of a tank that failed by cracking immediately after the welding operation. A detailed investigation was carried out by means of visual examination, metallographic and chemical analysis, SEM, and EDAX analysis. Microstructure revealed banded pearlitic structure along with a number of inclusions, a few of which were elongated. In conclusion, stresses due to weld joint restraint, elongated inclusions, and high transverse direction stresses after welding resulted in lamellar tearing which propagated in the linear direction along the weld line.  相似文献

For application specialists to accept virtual reality (VR) as a valid new measuring environment, we conducted several case studies. This paper describes a case study in dentistry in which VR is used to measure the length of the root canal of a tooth from processed tomography data. This paper shows the advantages of measuring in visualization space rather than in reality. We present a software framework aimed at the application specialist rather than the VR expert. Furthermore, the VR measuring technique is analyzed and compared to traditional measuring techniques for this particular application. We show that VR allows for intuitive measuring paradigms that are accurate and versatile alternatives to situations where traditional techniques are deficient.  相似文献

In quill embroidery, leather goods are beautified with patterns stitched with stripes of the cortex of peacock feathers. Our new structural, geometric and mechanical data for the tail cover feathers of the peacock allow an understanding of the mechanisms of embroidery. 企业过程再造(BPR)是为了实现企业经营业绩上的突破而对企业经营过程进行的彻底的再思考和根本的再设计。它通过应用现代信息技术对企业经营过程、人力资源和组织结构进行重新设置,彻底消除企业原有劳动和部门分工对企业实现根本经营目标所形成的障碍。作业集成和组织扁平化是成功实施BPR的两个重要因素,也是BPR的难点。本文结合一个电话障碍维修业务再造的成功案例,分析了如何在BPR实施过程中将作业集成与组织扁平化二者有效地结合起来,共同实现经营过程的变革。提出的几点成功经验可供其它企业实施BPR时参考。  相似文献

During qualification testing, a printed circuit board (PCB) of an electronic device for a drilling tool failed. The circuit board was exposed to a 120 h aging cycle at 180°C followed by 10 thermal cycles between −40 and 180°C before a failure was noticed. During inspection numerous white whiskers were observed over a lead-free solder surface. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS) were used for microscopic examination and material characterization of the whiskers, end-cap metallization, and the solder materials. The tin whisker formation was attributed to the compressive stress in the tin solder material, which was caused by diffusion of the end cap metallization, formation of intermetallics, and thermal cycling of the soldered components. Recommendations are given to mitigate/control whisker formation on the lead-free solder materials.  相似文献
