The next-generation wireless networks are evolving toward a versatile IP-based network that can provide various real-time multimedia services to mobile users. Two major challenges in establishing such a wireless mobile Internet are support of fast handoff and provision of quality of service (QoS) over IP-based wireless access networks. In this article, a DiffServ resource allocation architecture is proposed for the evolving wireless mobile Internet. The registration-domain-based scheme supports fast handoff by significantly reducing mobility management signaling. The registration domain is integrated with the DiffServ mechanism and provisions QoS guarantee for each service class by domain-based admission control. Furthermore, an adaptive assured service is presented for the stream class of traffic, where resource allocation is adjusted according to the network condition in order to minimize handoff call dropping and new call blocking probabilities  相似文献

In wireless cellular communication systems, call admission control (CAC) is to ensure satisfactory services for mobile users and maximize the utilization of the limited radio spectrum. In this paper, we propose a new CAC scheme for a code division multiple access (CDMA) wireless cellular network supporting heterogeneous self-similar data traffic. In addition to ensuring transmission accuracy at the bit level, the CAC scheme guarantees service requirements at both the call level and the packet level. The grade of service (GoS) at the call level and the quality of service (QoS) at the packet level are evaluated using the handoff call dropping probability and the packet transmission delay, respectively. The effective bandwidth approach for data traffic is applied to guarantee QoS requirements. Handoff probability and cell overload probability are derived via the traffic aggregation method. The two probabilities are used to determine the handoff call dropping probability, and the GoS requirement can be guaranteed on a per call basis. Numerical analysis and computer simulation results demonstrate that the proposed CAC scheme can meet both QoS and GoS requirements and achieve efficient resource utilization.  相似文献

This paper considers optimizing the utilization of radio resources in a heterogeneous integrated system consisting of two different networks: a wireless local area network (WLAN) and a wideband code division multiple access (CDMA) network. We propose a joint session admission control scheme for multimedia traffic that maximizes overall network revenue with quality of service (QoS) constraints over both the WLAN and the CDMA cellular networks. The WLAN operates under the IEEE 802.11e medium access control (MAC) protocol, which supports QoS for multimedia traffic. A novel concept of effective bandwidth is used in the CDMA network to derive the unified radio resource usage, taking into account both physical layer linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) receivers and characteristics of the packet traffic. Numerical examples illustrate that the network revenue earned in the proposed joint admission control scheme is significantly larger than that when the individual networks are optimized independently with no vertical handoff between them. The revenue gain is also significant over the scheme in which vertical handoff is supported, but admission control is not done jointly. Furthermore, we show that the optimal joint admission control policy is a randomized policy, i.e., sessions are admitted to the system with probabilities in some states  相似文献

In wireless multimedia communication systems, call admission control (CAC) is critical for simultaneously achieving a high resource utilization efficiency and maintaining quality-of-service (QoS) to mobile users. User mobility, heterogeneous nature of multimedia traffic, and limited radio spectrum pose significant challenges to CAC. QoS provisioning to both new calls and handoff calls comes with a cost of low resource utilization. This paper proposes a CAC policy for a wireless communication system supporting integrated voice and dataservices. In particular, soft QoS (or relaxed target QoS) is incorporated in the CAC policy to make compromises among different objectives.Numerical results are presented to demonstrate that (a) in dealing with the dilemma between QoS satisfaction and high resource utilization, how the resource utilization efficiency can be increased by introducing soft QoS; and (b) in accommodating different types of traffic, how the QoS of low priority traffic can be improved by specifying soft QoS to high priority traffic.  相似文献

Efficient resource allocation for China's 3G/4G wireless networks   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The all-IP DiffServ model is expected to be the most promising architecture for QoS provisioning in China's next-generation wireless networks, due to its scalability, convenience for mobility support, and capability of interworking heterogeneous radio access networks. This article focuses on efficient resource allocation in a wireless DiffServ architecture. Resource utilization efficiency is particularly important for China's wireless networks as the mobile user density in China is and will continue to be much higher than that in other countries. More specifically, we propose a novel buffer sharing scheme to provide assured service for real-time layer-coded multimedia traffic, which can guarantee the specific packet loss requirement of each layer with UDP as the transport layer protocol. An adaptive optimal buffer configuration can be applied to achieve maximum resource utilization over the time-varying channel. Assured service is also provided to TCP data traffic for guaranteed throughput, where the cross-layer coupling between the TCP layer and link layer is exploited to efficiently utilize the wireless resources.  相似文献

The General Packet Radio Service is the current enhancement in the GSM infrastructure, capable of handling Internet protocol traffic for mobile computing and communications. A major deficiency of the current GPRS specification is the lack of adequate IP quality of service support. Two schemes for enhancing the GPRS architecture with the existing IP QoS support architectures, IntServ and DiffServ, are proposed. Solutions are proposed to the problem of establishing QoS reservations across the GPRS core network, and the required signaling enhancements and modifications in the components of the GPRS architecture are identified. Of the two proposed schemes the IntServ one requires frequent refreshing of state information and extra signaling. To quantify the effect that signaling overhead has on GPRS operation and performance, a simulation model of the proposed IntServ architecture was developed, which includes models of the GPRS cellular infrastructure, network traffic, and user movement. The obtained simulation results show that the proposed IntServ architecture demonstrated good scalability, even for large user populations  相似文献

In order to support the quality‐of‐service (QoS) requirements for real‐time traffic over broadband wireless networks, advanced techniques such as space‐time diversity (STD) and multicarrier direct‐sequence code division multiple access (MC‐DS‐CDMA) are implemented at the physical layer. However, the employment of such techniques evidently affects the QoS provisioning algorithms at the medium access control (MAC) layer. In this paper, we propose a space‐time infrastructure and develop a set of cross‐layer real‐time QoS‐provisioning algorithms for admission control, scheduling, and subchannel‐allocations. We analytically map the parameters characterizing the STD onto the admission‐control region guaranteeing the real‐time QoS. Our analytical analyses show that the proposed algorithms can effectively support real‐time QoS provisioning. Also presented are numerical solutions and simulation results showing that the STD can significantly improve the QoS provisioning for real‐time services over wireless networks. For various advantages including better utilization of radio spectrum (through frequency reuse), lower mobile transmit power requirements, and smaller and cheaper base station equipment, future wireless mobile multimedia networks are likely to adopt micro/picocellular architectures. A consequence of using small cell sizes is the increased rate of call handoffs as mobiles move between cells during the holding times of calls. In a network supporting multimedia services, the increased rate of call handoffs not only increases the signaling load on the network, but makes it very difficult for the network to guarantee the quality of service (QoS) promised to a call at setup or admission time. This paper describes an adaptive QoS handoff priority scheme which reduces the probability of call handoff failures in a mobile multimedia network with a micro/picocellular architecture. The scheme exploits the ability of most multimedia traffic types to adapt and trade off QoS with changes in the amount of bandwidth used. In this way, calls can trade QoS received for fewer handoff failures. The call level and packet level performance of the handoff scheme are studied analytically for a homogeneous network supporting a mix of wide-band and narrow-band calls. Comparisons are made to the performance of the nonpriority handoff scheme and the well-known guard-channel handoff scheme  相似文献

This paper proposes a flow‐based admission control algorithm through an Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) based Multi‐Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) network for multiple service class environments of Integrated Service (IntServ) and Differentiated Service (DiffServ). We propose the Integrated Packet Scheduler to accommodate IntServ and Best Effort traffic through the DiffServ‐aware MPLS core network. The numerical results of the proposed algorithm achieve reliable delay‐bounded Quality of Service (QoS) performance and reduce the blocking probability of high priority service in the DiffServ model. We show the performance behaviors of IntServ traffic negotiated by end users when their packets are delivered through the DiffServ‐aware MPLS core network. We also show that ATM shortcut connections are well tuned with guaranteed QoS service. We validate the proposed method by numerical analysis of its performance in such areas as throughput, end‐to‐end delay and path utilization.  相似文献

Perceptive admission control for wireless network quality of service   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

As wireless networks become more widely used, there is a growing need to support advanced services, such as multimedia streaming and voice over IP. Traditional approaches to guarantee quality of service (QoS) work well only with predictable channel and network access. In wireless mobile networks, where conditions dynamically change as nodes move about the network, a stateless, high level approach is required. Since shared wireless resources are easily over-utilized, the load in the network must be controlled so that an acceptable QoS for real-time applications can be maintained. If minimum real-time requirements are not met, these unusable packets waste scarce bandwidth and hinder other traffic, compounding the problem. To enable high QoS for all admitted traffic, we propose the Perceptive Admission Control (PAC) protocol. PAC monitors the wireless channel and dynamically adapts admission control decisions to enable high network utilization while preventing congestion. Through discussion, simulations and testbed experiments, we demonstrate that PAC ensures low packet loss and delay for all admitted flows.  相似文献

In view of the rapidly growing trend of migrating customers from traditional wired phones to mobile phones and then to VoIP services in the recent past, there is a tremendous demand for wireless technologies to support VoIP, specially on WiFi technologies which have already matured commercially. This has put forth great research challenges in the area of wireless VoIP. In this article we have addressed two core issues, efficient silence suppression and call admission control, in QoS provisioning for VoIP services in WiFi networks. In this connection we present a QoS-aware wireless MAC protocol called hybrid contention-free access (H-CFA) and a VoIP call admission control technique called the traffic stream admission control (TS-AC) algorithm. The H-CFA protocol is based on a novel idea that combines two contention-free wireless medium access approaches, round-robin polling and TDMA-like time slot assignment, and provides substantial multiplexing capacity gain through silence suppression of voice calls. The TS-AC algorithm ensures efficient admission control for consistent delay bound guarantees and further maximizes the capacity through exploiting the voice characteristic so that it can tolerate some level of non-consecutive packet loss. We expose the benefits of our schemes through numerical results obtained from simulations.  相似文献

The DQRUMA (distributed-queueing request update multiple access) protocol has been considered as an access protocol for the BAHAMA (broadband ad hoc wireless ATM local area network). However, it cannot support the service discipline of integrated multimedia traffic since it does not include any priority and access control policy. In this paper, we propose a nonpreemptive priority-based access control scheme for the DQRUMA protocol. Under such a scheme, modifying the CSMA/CA protocol in the contention period supports many levels of priorities such that user mobility (handoff) can be supported in BAHAMA. Besides, the proposed transmit-permission policy and adaptive bandwidth allocation scheme provide various QoS (quality-of-service) guarantees while maintaining high bandwidth utilization. Simulations show that it provides a good performance in ad hoc wireless ATM LAN environments  相似文献

The provision of multiclass services is gaining wide acceptance and will be more ubiquitous in future wireless and mobile systems. The crucial issue is to provide the guaranteed mobile quality of service (QoS) for arriving multiclass calls. In multimedia cellular networks, we should not only minimize the dropping rate of handoff calls, but also control the blocking rate of new calls at an acceptable level. This paper proposes a novel multiclass call-admission-control mechanism that is based on a dynamic reservation pool for handoff requests. In this paper, we propose the concept of servicing multiclass connections based on priority determination through the combined analysis of mobile movement information and the desired QoS requirements of multimedia traffic. A practical framework is provided to determine the occurrence time of handoff-request reservations. In our simulation experiments, three kinds of timers are introduced for controlling the progress of discrete events. Our simulation results show that the individual QoS criteria of multiclass traffic such as the handoff call-dropping probability can be achieved within a targeted objective and the new-call-blocking probability is constrained to be below a given level. The proposed scheme is applicable to channel allocation of multiclass calls over high-speed wireless multimedia networks.  相似文献

Dynamic reservation TDMA protocol for wireless ATM networks   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A dynamic reservation time division multiple access (DR-TDMA) control protocol that extends the capabilities of asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks over the wireless channel is proposed in this paper. DR-TDMA combines the advantages of distributed access and centralized control for transporting constant bit rate (CBR), variable bit rate (VBR), and available bit rate (ABR) traffic efficiently over a wireless channel. The contention slots access for reservation requests is governed by the framed pseudo-Bayesian priority (FPBP) Aloha protocol that provides different access priorities to the control packets in order to improve the quality-of-service (QoS) offered to time sensitive connections. DR-TDMA also features a novel integrated resource allocation algorithm that efficiently schedules terminals' reserved access to the wireless ATM channel by considering their requested bandwidth and QoS. Integration of CBR, voice, VBR, data, and control traffic over the wireless ATM channel using the proposed DR-TDMA protocol is considered in this paper. Simulation results are presented to show that the protocol respects the required QoS of each traffic category while providing a highly efficient utilization of approximately 96% for the wireless ATM channel  相似文献

In this article, the performance and capacity gain achievable with quality of service (QoS) management in packet switched radio networks based on the General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) are examined. Both the functions defined in the GPRS specification for QoS support and implementation-specific strategies for subscriber- and application-based Connection Admission Control (CAC) and scheduling are introduced. The feasibility of QoS provisioning in mobile core networks with use of DiffServ compared to present IP technology realizing a pure Best-effort service is examined in addition. To achieve this, simulation results of GPRS performance and system measures for different load situations are produced with the simulation tool GPRSim that models the realistic traffic behavior of a GPRS network.  相似文献

This paper provides a novel design concept for advanced mobile multi interface terminals with radio network aggregation capability and enhanced quality of service (QoS) provisioning for multimedia services (voice, video and data) in heterogeneous wireless and mobile networks. A new module is established which provides the best QoS and lowest cost for any given multimedia service by using simultaneously all available wireless and mobile access networks for a given traffic flow. This novel adaptive QoS module with adaptive QoS routing algorithm is called advanced QoS routing algorithm (AQoSRA), which is defined independently from any existing and future radio access technology. The performance of our proposal is evaluated using simulations and analysis with multi-interface mobile stations with AQoSRA within, carrying multimedia traffic in heterogeneous mobile and wireless environment with coexistence of multiple Radio Access Technologies, such as 3G, 4G as well as future 5G radio access networks. The analysis of the proposed framework for radio networks aggregation in advanced mobile terminals has shown overall better performances regarding the achievable throughput and multimedia access probability in heterogeneous wireless and mobile environment.

The CAC (call admission control), which can guarantee call services to meet their QoS (Quality of Service) requirements, plays a significant role in providing QoS in wireless mobile networks. In this paper, an adaptive multiguard channel scheme‐based CAC strategy is proposed to prioritize traffic types and handoff calls. The major aim of the study is to develop the analytical model of the priority traffic and handoff calls based adaptive multiguard channel scheme and examining the performance through setting the value of the adaptive ratio parameters. Our proposed scheme tries to mediate the advantages and drawbacks of the static and dynamic CAC schemes. The proposed scheme is quite different from previous studies because multithreshold values have been considered for multiclass traffic by adaption parameters, and a closed form analytical model is developed The numerical results show that this scheme can be used to keep the targeted QoS requirement by suitably setting the adaptive ratio parameters. IEEE 802.11e enhanced distributed channel access (EDCA) is a distributed medium access scheme based on carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) protocol. In this paper, a model-based admission control (MBAC) scheme that performs real-timely at medium access control (MAC) layer is proposed for the decision of accepting or rejecting requests for adding traffic streams to an IEEE 802.11e EDCA wireless local area network (WLAN). The admission control strategy is implemented in access point (AP), which employs collision probability and access delay measures from active flows to estimate throughput and packet delay of each traffic class by the proposed unsaturation analytical model. Simulation results prove accuracy of the proposed analytical model and effectiveness of MBAC scheme.  相似文献

The undergoing third-generation wireless network needs to support the integration of voice and multimedia data services with varying quality-of-service (QoS) requirements. It is critical that the least bit-error rate (BER) for voice traffic, World Wide Web (WWW) traffic, and streaming video traffic be guaranteed at all time. In this paper, we discussed the integration of soft handoff and dynamic spreading factor in wideband code-division multiple-access system in supporting multimedia traffic. The contribution of our work is twofold. First, the processing time of the handoff request is analyzed. We found that intensive mobile handoff might consume significant amount of access channel time and increase the delay of handoff. We, therefore, proposed a batch mechanism such that multiple handoff requests could be processed simultaneously. The average delay is reduced from 1.12 s to 800 ms at heavy handoff rate. Our second contribution is a new resource allocation algorithm, where the spreading factor and transmission power for the handoff mobiles are jointly considered to maximize the throughput. The BER requirements for the handoff mobiles and the target cell are maintained during the handoff process. The original problem is formulated into a nonlinear programming format. We proposed a procedure to simplify it into a linear constraint problem, which is solved by a revised simplex method. Numerical results show a 25% increase in throughput for WWW traffic and a 26% improvement for the video traffic.  相似文献
