Are Samples in Randomized Controlled Trials of Psychotherapy Representative of Community Outpatients? A New Methodology and Initial Findings.

To determine the extent to which published randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of psychotherapy can be generalized to a sample of community outpatients, the authors used a method of matching information obtained from outpatient charts to inclusion and exclusion criteria from published RCT studies. They found that 80% of the patients in their sample who had diagnoses represented in the RCT literature were judged eligible for at least 1 published RCT; however, 58% of the patients had primary diagnoses such as adjustment disorder or dysthymia, which were not represented in the existing psychotherapy outcome literature. The most common reasons that patients in their sample did not match with published RCTs for psychotherapy are listed, and the implications of these findings for research and practice are discussed. Research productivity and impact of male and female psychologists.

Investigated whether the marked underrepresentation of females in lists of highly cited psychologists reflected differences in the quality or the quantity of research produced by males and females. Citation counts were established for 396 papers reporting dissertation research published by male and female psychologists in 14 journals between 1967 and 1972. Females attracted as many citations as males for dissertation research over the 6 yrs following publication. Although females had by 1978 published significantly fewer papers than males, there was no difference between sexes in the number of citations gained/published paper. However, more males than females were prolific researchers with heavy outputs of highly cited papers. Sex differences in productivity, impact, and recognition are discussed in the context of factors that facilitate or hinder research achievement. Psi Chi/APA Edwin B. Newman Graduate Research Award.

The Edwin B. Newman Graduate Research Award is sponsored jointly by Psi Chi, the national honor society in psychology, and the APA. The award is presented annually to the psychology graduate student who submits the best research paper that was published or presented at a national, regional, or state psychological association conference during the past calendar year. Content analysis of the Journal of Counseling Psychology: Buboltz, Miller, and Williams (1999) 11 years later.

A content analysis of research published in the Journal of Counseling Psychology (JCP) was conducted for Volumes 46 (1999) through 56 (2009). The analysis involved the placement of 514 articles in 15 substantive content categories. In addition, we identified the most frequently published authors, most frequent institutional affiliations, and several reported demographic characteristics. The principal areas of research activity in the JCP were multiculturalism and/or diversity, research on development and evaluation of tests and measures, personality and adjustment, outcome research, and interpersonal and/or social support and/or attachment, with these categories accounting for 57% of the articles published. Over 40% of the samples reported were college students, with a large number of samples including both genders and indicating the ethnic breakdown. This content analysis revealed that the JCP has remained consistent with its stated mission while incorporating changes in the field in its publications. Discussion of media influences and other selected issues in adolescent psychology texts.

Analyzed the content of 10 adolescent psychology textbooks published 1983–1985 and 15 published 1975–1982. Major issues were found to be sexuality, identity, and drug or alcohol use. Only 12 of the 25 textbooks studied discussed the effects of music and the media on adolescents. It is suggested that music and media influence on adolescents has been and continues to be an issue largely neglected or ignored in basic adolescent psychology texts. AIDS: nursing care, new perspectives

OBJECTIVES: To revise the recent changes which have occurred in the diagnosis of, clinical stay for, and treatment of AIDS and their repercussions in nursing care. 1997 was characterized by the clear dominance of new advances in combined therapy using antiretorvirus drugs, by the possibility to measure the degree and number of the virus infection, and an improved knowledge of the dynamics and variability of the AIDS virus. Infected persons' quality of life can benefit from nursing care to check the gradual physical, cognitive and emotional deterioration patients continue to suffer from, in spite of the tenuous hope which new scientific discoveries and advances have introduced and which are very slowly becoming a part of treatment programs. SOURCES FOR THIS STUDY INCLUDE: MEDLINE data base studies published between 1990 and 1996, regular "SEISIDA" publications; summaries from the XIth International AIDS Conference held in Vancouver in July 1996; reports published by the Centers for the Control and Prevention of Diseases (CDC); and articles published or pending publication written by the authors. ARTICLE SELECTION: Selection of original articles published from 1990 to 1996 on the MEDLINE data base dealing with nursing treatment for patients infected by HIV in hospital, community center or homecare service units.     

Prostheses for primary total hip replacement. A critical appraisal of the literature

Eighty-one published papers on the performance of prostheses in total hip replacement were appraised. Sound methodology was demonstrated in 1 of 8 randomized controlled trials and 4 of 17 nonrandomized comparative studies. Of 56 case series without controls, 32 met the appraisal criteria, but these are intrinsically less useful. The published literature does not provide solid evidence for the superiority of cement-free or hybrid prostheses over modern cemented types.
