Mobile application market: A developer’s perspective

Major software companies, such as Apple and Google, are disturbing the relatively safe and established actors of the mobile application business. These newcomers have caused significant structural changes in the market by imposing and enforcing their own rules for the future of mobile application developments. The implications of these changes do not only concern the mobile network operators and mobile phone manufacturers but also bring additional opportunities and constraints for current mobile application developers. Therefore, developers need to assess what their options are and how they can take advantage of these current trends. In this paper, we take a developer’s perspective in order to explore how the identified trends will impact the mobile application development markets. Our preliminary analysis leads us to suggest eight propositions which summarize our findings and can be the starting points for future empirical research.     

A survey of 5G technologies: regulatory,standardization and industrial perspectives

In recent years, there have been significant developments in the research on 5th Generation (5G) networks. Several enabling technologies are being explored for the 5G mobile system era. The aim is to evolve a cellular network that is intrinsically flexible and remarkably pushes forward the limits of legacy mobile systems across all dimensions of performance metrics. All the stakeholders, such as regulatory bodies, standardization authorities, industrial fora, mobile operators and vendors, must work in unison to bring 5G to fruition. Television is likely to start being broadcast to PDAs and mobile phones soon, with the help of shrinking screen technologies. With 3G take-up going far slower than operators hoped and the pioneering service in the UK struggling to achieve initial sales targets, stakeholders from network operators to content providers are looking at more reliable ways of generating money in a saturated handset market. Adding broadcast television functionality to mobile devices, whether they are phones or personal digital assistants, could be the answer. Getting a 100 second video clip to a million mobile subscribers at 100 kbps could occupy an entire 3G network for up to 15 minutes, while the same content could be delivered by the broadcast route using only around 0.1% of capacity. A new standard, DVB-H, will address issues like power saving. Impatient broadcasters may use existing platforms to deliver services rather than waiting for DVB-H. This raises the prospect of a digital audio standard, like DAB, being used to deliver television to a mobile phone. The article outlines some of the research being carried out.
