Design and Studio Pedagogy

Utilizing an educational concept known as the hidden curriculum to analyze the design studio, the author argues that there is a rough correspondence between schooling and larger societal practices, where the selection of knowledge and the ways in which school social relations are structured to distribute such knowledge, are influenced by forms and practices of power in society. Asymmetrical relations of power are reproduced in schools and classrooms, including the design studio. In response, the author has been experimenting with a transformative pedagogy for the design studio, attempting to set up the conditions to investigate not only the many issues of design, but the nature of design education itself, especially with regard to how knowledge is produced and disseminated, how social relations are structured, and how students and the professor come to see their roles in these activities.

Complementary Virtual Architecture and the Design Studio

Complementary virtual architecture combines physical architecture with virtual buildings to address a single program. This bimodal approach serves clients whose activities span both worlds, and it brings conventional architectural concerns of client/corporate identity, artistic expression, and articulation into the virtual domain, and in turn requires coordination with design for the physical world. To prepare students for a future that will likely present many such opportunities, the authors formed and taught for three years a studio centered on projects of this type.

Integrating Structures and Design in the First-Year Studio

Introducing structures learning to the first-year architectural design studio situates structures as fundamental to both the design process and architectural expression. At the Illinois Institute of Technology, we use dynamic modeling techniques and large-scale installations to help students develop a visual and tacit structural intelligence, and to encourage students to take a greater interest in structural systems as a design concern. Similar to a design-build teaching model, our approach relies upon active experimentation with structural models and installations, and reveals the latent design potential in structural systems.

曼景工作室室内设计是对于材料物质性的一个试验。现有办公空间均质、单调,不能满足设计师的日常交流和模型陈列等功能。我们想通过一种极其简单和纯粹的方法营造出适合讨论、展览的空间氛围。我们希望它是个“轻”设计,不要介入过多的材料与人工。在材料的选择上我们希望使用极其日常的材料,通过设计让材料产生新的物质性。

公司抗战了八年，规模不见长。大家都想变一下工作环境，换一下心情。我们没有像其它单位买房办公又置业。我们租了杭州万松岭脚下南宋遗址旁的块院子。四亩地和幢七百平方的老房子，我用了九个月的时间改造。工程不需要赶时间，因为自己是甲方，找不到感觉，还可以推倒重来。过程中有很多插曲，空间中有很多故事，灯光下有很多情绪设计不是名词，它是一个动词，是个不断贯彻想法的实践过程。     

Compassionism and the Design Studio in the Aftermath of 9/11

Abstract

The events of 9/11 are dramatically reshaping society. The terrorist attacks in New York City and in Washington, DC, have been extensively examined in the media and addressed in the work of professionals and academicians across a broad spectrum of disciplines. The profession and discipline of architecture is reassessing its position in relation to these events. Architectural education, and the functions of the design studio in particular, are similarly subject to this process of reappraisal. A case study is presented of a studio project on the topic of transportable medical facilities for disaster mitigation. This work is discussed against a backdrop of societal constructs concerning the functions of compassionism in architecture in the aftermath of 9/11. The case study is but one example of the potential of the studio to emerge as a rapid-response vehicle to foster in the student a genuine attitude of social and civic engagement.
