Light and electron microscopy of ventral surface of triclada D. lacteum allowed to distinguish four regions, containing ducts of adhesive glands. Every zone described has several morphological features connected to their role in various physiological processes. In every case structural unit of adhesive system is a complex of two unicellullar glands which according to the structure of secretory granules secrete different chemical products and are responsible for different processes such as adhesion an secretion. Adhesive structures of D. lacteum involved in vital behavior acts as movement on substrate surface, food capture an reaction of avoiding are heavily innervated. Cerebral ganglion neurons play the leading role in innervation of adhesive channel and area of additional secretion. The margin and caudal sucktio are innervated by axons originated from lateral neural cord. Neurons of peripheral plexuses play an important role in innervation of the whole adhesive system. Eleven fleshy appendages, or rays, surround each of the nostrils of the star-nosed mole. Each ray is covered with tactile sensory organs, and each ray is represented in the cortex by a stripe of tissue visible in brain sections processed for cytochrome oxidase. Here we report that the 11th, ventral ray is the behavioral focus of the nose. This ray is preferentially used to explore prey items by touch, in a behavior pattern similar to the use of a fovea in the visual system. After prey is first contacted with any nasal ray, subsequent touches are centered on the 11th ray. Although the 11th ray is small and has relatively few sensory organs on its surface, it has the largest cortical representation, greatest area of cortex per sensory organ, and the highest innervation density per sensory organ. In addition, the average area of cortex per primary afferent is highest for this ray. We refer to the differential magnification of first-order afferents in the cortical representation as "afferent magnification." The patterns of both cortical magnification (cortical area per sensory organ) and afferent magnification (cortical area per afferent) of the rays correlated highly with the distribution of touches across the nose scored from videotaped behavior. A simple model of star-nosed mole behavior predicts the distribution of touches across the rays and also correlates highly with both the actual pattern of behavior and the patterns of cortical magnification observed. 相似文献

Splanchnic innervation of the mesenteric lymph node was studied by means of electrophysiological technique in the rat. The effect of intravenous (i.v.) injection of recombinant human interleukin-1beta (rhIL-1beta) on the activity of efferent nerve fibers innervating the mesenteric lymph node was observed in the urethane anesthetized rat. An i.v. injection of 10 ng rhIL-1beta caused a gradual increase in efferent activity which lasted longer than 90 min. Dose related responses were observed at doses of 1, 10 and 100 ng. The least effective dose was about 10 ng. The conduction velocities estimated in mesenteric nerve fibers to the lymph node distributed in the range of 1.9-0.9 m/s, and the mean velocity was 1.39+/-0.34 m/s (n = 5). These observations implicate the involvement in the neural modulation of immune function of the mesenteric lymph node. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: The aim of the present investigation was to determine the relative distribution of autonomic and sensory nerves in the cardiac conduction tissues of calves. METHODS: A quantitative immunohistochemical and histochemical technique was adopted. RESULTS: Immunoreactivity to the general neuronal marker protein gene product 9.5 (PGP 9.5) demonstrated that all regions of the conduction system possessed a higher relative density of total nerves when compared with the surrounding myocardial tissues. Unlike myocardial innervation, the conduction system did not display an atrial-to-ventricular gradient in nerve density. PGP 9.5-immunoreactive nerve trunks and varicose nerve fibres were more numerous in the transitional atrioventricular node and the penetrating atrioventricular bundle than in either the sinus node, compact atrioventricular node, or bundle branches. The Purkinje network of the ventricular conduction tissues possessed a rich supply of PGP 9.5-immunoreactive nerve trunks and varicose nerve fibres. Acetylcholinesterase (AChE)-positive nerves were the main subtype identified in the sinus and atrioventricular nodes and in the ventricular conduction tissues, representing 50-80% of the area occupied by PGP 9.5-immunoreactive nerves. The compact atrioventricular node possessed AChE-positive and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH)-immunoreactive nerves in similar proportions (45%), although, in general, TH-immunoreactive nerves had a lower relative nerve density than AChE-positive nerves. Neuropeptide Y (NPY)-immunoreactive nerves represented the main peptide-containing subpopulation and occurred throughout the conduction system, displaying a similar pattern of distribution and relative density to those demonstrating TH immunoreactivity. Nerve fibres immunoreactive for somatostatin, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide, substance P, and calcitonin gene-related peptide formed relatively minor subpopulations. CONCLUSIONS: The general innervation of the bovine conduction tissues exhibits significant regional variation. Throughout all regions of the conduction system, AChE-positive nerve represented the dominant subtype when compared with TH- and NPY-immunoreactive nerves. The distribution and relative density of nerve subtypes in the tissues of the bovine conduction system are similar to those observed in man, whereas differences were observed in other regions, such as the atrioventricular bundle and bundle branches. We carried out two separate epidemiological studies on long-term changes, 10 years apart, on the prevalence rate of dementia in the elderly by the same method for the same area in Japan. We also performed a genetic study of patients with dementia of the Alzheimer type (DAT) based on the epidemiological studies. The number of patients with dementia was much larger in 1990 than in 1980. Especially, the number of mildly demented patients was significantly larger in 1990 than in 1980. The 35 patients with DAT did not show any mutations of amyloid-beta protein precursor, presenilin 1 and presenilin 2 genes. The frequency of apolipoprotein E (apo E) sigma4 allele in DAT was significantly higher than that in control subjects (p < 0.005). This study suggests that the frequency of DAT may increase by aging of the population in the future and we confirm the close association between apoE sigma4 allele and DAT in a community-based study in Japan. 相似文献

Using immunohistochemical procedures numerous nerve fibers have been found in all cell layers of human epidermis. These nerves originate from nerve trunks in the dermis, enter the epidermis, then divide distally to eventually end in small enlargements, near the surface of the skin and in deeper areas. Some endings may be external to stratum granulosum cells. Epidermal nerves appear to have a three-dimensional territorial distribution in relationship to the skin's surface. The presence of epidermal nerve fibers was confirmed by electron microscope studies. The nerves are presumed to be sensory in nature. The existence of epidermal nerve fibers will necessitate changes in present theory of structure and function of peripheral sensation. 相似文献

Typically obturator nerve blockade is used to relieve hip pain. It sometimes only has a minor effect in resolving symptoms. This clinical observation led us to examine comprehensively the sensory nerve innervation of formalin-fixed hip joint capsules. Following macroscopic preparation, the area of the hip joint capsule was inspected with the aid of an operating microscope. We discovered a separation between the anterior and posterior sensory innervation of the hip joint capsule. The anteromedial innervation was determined by the articular branches of the obturator n. Additionally, the anterior hip joint capsule was innervated by sensory articular branches from the femoral n. In the posterior part we found articular branches from the sciatic n., which in addition to the articular branches from the nerves to the quadratus femoris m., innervate the postero-medial section of the hip joint capsule. Moreover, articular branches of the superior gluteal n. were found, which innervate the posterolateral section of the hip joint capsule. This anatomical study demonstrates that the obturator n. block is insufficient for the treatment of hip pain. Further investigations will determine if these nn. can be reached percutaneously. Effective neural blockade of the hip joint must include the femoral n., the sciatic n. and the superior gluteal n. 相似文献

1) Measurements of the cystometrogram, of the responsiveness of bladder muscle to pelvic nerve efferent stimulation and of the sensitivity of the pelvic nerve afferents to pressure and volume during distensions have been made in the bladders of young adult (2-3 months) and aged (26-29 months) rats, anesthetized with mixtures of urethane and chloralose. 2) The pressure-volume relationship differed in young adult and aged rats. The bladders of the aged rats held up to nearly six times the volume of the young animals, and these volumes were accommodated at lower pressures in the aged animals. The pressure at which micturition contractions appeared was similar in young adult and aged animals. 3) The passive pressure associated with each of a series of distending volumes was recorded when a pelvic nerve was cut unilaterally. The distal cut end of this cut pelvic nerve was stimulated for 10 s at 20 Hz, using square wave pulses of 10 V and 1.0 ms. The active pressure-volume relationship was constructed from this data. Both the active and the passive relationships were shifted to the right in the aged animals, and it was evident that aging was associated with a reduction in the maximal pressure generated during pelvic nerve stimulation. Also the change in intravesical pressure induced by bladder contraction was less in aged animals. 4) The most sensitive mechanoreceptor afferents appear to have pressure and volume thresholds that do not change significantly during aging. While the distension-sensitive afferents in the pelvic nerve appear to have a similar sensitivity to intravesical pressure in young adult and aged rats, they were less able to monitor volume in the aged animals. The stimulus response relationship for volume was often less steep in the aged animals. 5) In this study, aging was shown to be associated with a large increase in bladder volume and a reduced sensitivity of pelvic nerve afferents to volume, and a reduced ability to raise bladder pressure during contraction of bladder smooth muscle. Ion channels are essential for the generation and maintenance of the cardiac action potential. The successful cloning of ion channels has shed considerable light into their structure and function. The combination of molecular biological and electrophysiological studies has paved the ground to develop general concepts for understanding properties of these channels, such as gating mechanism, kinetics of activation and inactivation, ion selectivity and pharmacological properties. Recently, several cDNAs encoding cardiac inwardly rectifying K+ channels, including classical inwardly rectifying, G-protein-gated, and ATP-sensitive K+ channels, have been isolated. Identification of these molecular mechanisms may point to novel approaches to the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias. The maxillary first and second molars (M1 and M2) in the Japanese shrew mole, Urotrichus talpoides, were investigated using an odontometrical approach. The mesiodistal crown diameter was larger in M1 than in M2, while the buccolingual diameter of M1 was nearly equal to that of M2. M2 was more compressed mesiodistally than M1. M1 had a large distal triangle on the stylar shelf. The mesial triangle of M2 was slightly larger than the distal triangle. Despite being smaller than M1, M2 was less variable than M1 in terms of size. The distal triangle of M1 and the mesial triangle of M2 were well developed, and thus this area, which corresponds to the inflection point of the maxillary dental arch, was most likely the center of an occlusal function. 相似文献

STUDY DESIGN: To use fresh, human supraspinal and interspinal ligaments and document their innervation. OBJECTIVES: To characterize the innervation of the human supraspinal and interspinal ligaments. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The nature and distribution of the innervation of spinal ligaments remains unknown. METHODS: Sections of spinal ligaments were labeled with a fluorescent antibody against neurofilament proteins and observed with a confocal microscope. RESULTS: The ligaments were found to be well innervated. Innervation was equally distributed along the ligament, symmetrically distributed between left and right sides, and more densely distributed in the periphery. Pacinian corpuscles were scattered randomly, close to blood vessels, whereas Ruffini corpuscles were in the periphery, close to the collagen bundles. CONCLUSIONS: Human supraspinal and interspinal ligaments are well innervated. This innervation might form the basis of neurologic feedback mechanisms for the protection and stability of the spine. These mechanisms might also be important in the development of diseases such as scoliosis. 相似文献

In this comparative study, microcalorimetric measurements were carried out on a total of 96 tumorous and nontumorous tissue samples taken from organs of the urogenital tract using a thermal activity monitor (TAM). Changes in the heat emission of the tissue samples were measured at 1-min intervals and graphically displayed as a function of time. The aim of the study was to compare the microcalorimetric results with impulse-cytophotometric and histological findings and provide evidence for the metabolic activity of tumorous and nontumorous tissue. In order to obtain the variation in metabolic activity, the maxima (Pmax) of the curves were determined as a value of the maximum thermal power of a tissue sample, the mean values (P) were determined by the mean thermal power and the contour integrals (W) were defined by the behavior of the energy reserves and their mobilization. The first part of the study was carried out to investigate whether tumorous and nontumorous tissue samples differ in general according to their metabolic activity. We discovered, using the parameters described above, that in general tumorous tissue exhibited a higher metabolic activity than nontumorous tissue samples. For example, both W and P in tumorous prostate tissue samples were eightfold higher and the (Pmax) value was 8.4-fold higher than in normal tissue. Additional investigations on testicle and kidney tissues were performed to find a possible correlation between microcalorimetric results and histological grading. We found that an increasing malignancy correlated with a higher metabolic activity of the tissue. Based upon these results we were able to differentiate the various histological gradings of these tumorous tissues by microcalorimetric measurements. The results show it is possible to differentiate between normal and tumorous tissue samples by microcalorimetric measurement based on the distinctly higher metabolic activity of malignant tissue. Furthermore, microcalorimetry allows a differentiation and classification of tissue samples into their histological grading. With the help of microcalorimetry, it might be possible in future to detect and record the metabolic processes of isolated tissue structures and changes in these activities as a result of medical intervention such as cytostatic treatment. 相似文献

Cytogenetic and morphologic analysis of 23 hydatidiform moles allowed the division into at least two syndromes: (1) the syndrome of complete (classical) mole is without an ascertainable embryo/fetus, gives a diploid karyotype, and manifests a progressive fluid engorgement of the villi as well as a gross, haphazardly distributed trophoblastic hyperplasia; (2) the syndrome of partial (incomplete) mole has an ascertainable fetus (alive or dead), gives a triploid karyotype, and exhibits a slowly progressing hydatidiform swelling in the presence of functioning villous capillaries that spares many villi; trophoblastic immaturity is constant and focal hyperplasia is inconspicuous but present. A single case of diploid mole with unusual morphologic features, complete with a fetus, may herald yet another syndrome. Human chorionic gonadotropin levels were initially high in practically all cases. There was no malignant trophoblastic disease in this small series, but a plea is made that partial moles be followed carefully in order to establish their relation to choriocarcinoma. 相似文献

1. Experiments have been performed in sheep to determine the contribution of lymph formed within a lymph node to the total protein output in lymph leaving the node. 2. The lymphatic duct leaving the popliteal lymph node was cannulated and the protein and lymphocyte output in efferent lymph determined. The afferent lymph flow to the popliteal node was then diverted and lymph formed only within the lymph node collected from the efferent cannula. It appeared from the results that the popliteal lymph node forms lymph at the rate of approximately 1 ml. per hour and may contribute 30-50% of the protein output observed in efferent lymph. 3. The importance of lymph formation within the lymph node varied between nodes found in different regions of the body. This was due in part to the different protein concentrations in the afferent lymph to the different nodes. 4. A positive correlation was found between the protein and lymphocyte concentrations in efferent lymph from the popliteal lymph node in seven out of eleven sheep and in lymph formed within the popliteal lymph node in two out of three sheep. It is suggested that this relationship may be due to an increased transfer of plasma proteins through the post-capillary venules in the lymph node accompanying the continual traffic of lymphocytes across the wall of these vessels. The results indicated that the protein transfer across the post-capillary venules was not an indiscriminate transfer of plasma per se but a selective transport from the blood plasma compartment based on molecular size. 相似文献

The causal involvement of bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV) and border disease virus (BDV) infection in bovine and ovine abortion and perinatal mortality remain unclear. From 1992 until 1994, 213 bovine and 31 ovine foetuses as well as 36 calves and 25 lambs which had died perinatally were investigated. Tissue samples were tested for the presence of pestiviruses and serum or fluid from the body cavities were analysed for the presence of pestivirus antibodies. Detection of pestiviruses was performed by (i) cell culture isolation, (ii) antigen ELISA and (iii) immunohistochemical staining for viral antigen. For antibody-testing an indirect ELISA was used. In nine bovine foetuses and in two calves BVDV was isolated. Pestiviruses, most likely BDV were detected in one ovine foetus and three lambs. In 6% of the bovine and 11% of the ovine foetuses anti-pestivirus antibodies were detected. However, clinical features and history of bovine cases did not show a correlation with the diagnostic results, In contrast, the presence of central nervous system signs in neonatal lambs and the detection of BDV was correlated. 相似文献

By immunohistochemistry, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) was localized to nerve fibres and nerve cell bodies in the gallbladder wall of several mammals, including man. There is thus a morphological basis for accepting the powerful actions of VIP on gallbladder motility as physiological. VIP (vasoactive intestinal polypeptide), first thought of as a gut hormone, has recently been localized to a widely distributed system of nerves in the gut wall 1,2. In addition, nerves displaying VIP immunoreactivity are present in the wall of brain vessels and in the hypothalamus 1,3. Among known effects of VIP are relaxation of the gallbladder and inhibition of CCK-induced gallbladder contraction4,5. These observations prompted a search for VIP in the gallbladder wall. The present report deals with the immunohistochemical demonstration of VIP nerves in the gallbladder of several species, including man. 相似文献

Over the last decade, great interest has been generated in evaluation of the extent of neural control of the adrenal cortex and in adrenal cortical/medullary paracrine interactions. The purpose of this review is to summarize current knowledge of fetal adrenal cortical innervation and to present an overview of those studies of fetal adrenal function indicating that adrenal innervation plays a functional role in the control of glucocorticoid secretion under basal conditions and in response to a variety of homeostatic challenges. It will be helpful in understanding both the innervation of the adrenal cortex and the role of adrenal innervation in steroidogenesis during fetal development to briefly review experimental studies that have shed light on adrenal steroidogenesis during postnatal life. This is helpful for two reasons: 1) the vast majority of studies of adrenal innervation and its effect on steroidogenesis have utilized postnatal animals and 2) since the fetus is preparing for postnatal life, evaluating the level of function achieved postnatally provides crucial insights into the developmental stages of adrenal innervation and its role in steroidogenesis in preparing the fetus for an independent postnatal existence. 相似文献
