This paper studies optimization of tool path planning in 5-axis flank milling of ruled surfaces using advanced Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) methods with machining error as an objective. We enlarge the solution space in the optimization by relaxing the constraint imposed by previous studies that the cutter must make contact with the boundary curves. Advanced Particle Swarm Optimization (APSO) and Fully Informed Particle Swarm Optimization (FIPS) algorithms are applied to improve the quality of optimal solutions and search efficiency. Test surfaces are constructed by systematic variations of three surface properties, cutter radius, and the number of cutter locations comprising a tool path. Test results show that FIPS is most effective in reducing the error in all the trials, while PSO performs best when the number of cutter locations is very low. This research improves tool path planning in 5-axis flank milling by producing smaller machining errors compared to past works. It also provides insightful findings in PSO based optimization of the tool path planning.  相似文献

This paper investigates tool path planning for 5-axis flank milling of ruled surfaces in consideration of CNC linear interpolation. Simulation analyses for machining error show insights into the tool motion that generates a precision machined surface. Contradicting to previous thoughts, the resultant tool path does not necessarily produce minimal machining error when the cutter contacts the rulings of a developable surface. This effect becomes more significant as the distance between two cutter locations is increased. An optimizing approach that adjusts the tool position locally may not produce minimal error as far as the entire surface is concerned. The optimal tool path computed by a global search scheme based on dynamic programming supports this argument. A flank milling experiment and CMM measurement further validate the findings of this work.  相似文献

This paper presents a methodology and algorithms of optimizing and smoothing the tool orientation control for 5-axis sculptured surface machining. A searching method in the machining configuration space (C-space) is proposed to find the optimal tool orientation by considering the local gouging, rear gouging and global tool collision in machining. Based on the machined surface error analysis, a boundary search method is developed first to find a set of feasible tool orientations in the C-space to eliminate gouging and collision. By using the minimum cusp height as the objective function, we first determine the locally optimal tool orientation in the C-space to minimize the machined surface error. Considering the adjacent part geometry and the alternative feasible tool orientations in the C-space, tool orientations are then globally optimized and smoothed to minimize the dramatic change of tool orientation during machining. The developed method can be used to automate the planning and programming of tool path generation for high performance 5-axis sculptured surface machining. Computer implementation and examples are also provided in the paper.  相似文献

Although 5-axis free form surface machining is commonly proposed in CAD/CAM software, several issues still need to be addressed and especially collision avoidance between the tool and the part. Indeed, advanced user skills are often required to define smooth tool axis orientations along the tool path in high speed machining. In the literature, the problem of collision avoidance is mainly treated as an iterative process based on local and global collision tests with a geometrical method. In this paper, an innovative method based on physical modeling is used to generate 5-axis collision-free smooth tool paths. In the proposed approach, the ball-end tool is considered as a rigid body moving in the 3D space on which repulsive forces, deriving from a scalar potential field attached to the check surfaces, and attractive forces are acting. A study of the check surface tessellation is carried out to ensure smooth variations of the tool axis orientation. The proposed algorithm is applied to open pocket parts such as an impeller to emphasize the effectiveness of this method to avoid collision.  相似文献

This paper proposes a novel method for generation of optimized tool path in 5-axis flank milling of ruled surfaces based on Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). The 3D geometric problem, tool path generation, is transformed into a mathematical programming task with the machined surface error as the objective function in the optimization. This approach overcomes the limitation of greedy planning methods employed by most previous studies. By allowing the cutter to move backforward, reciprocating tool path produces smaller machining error compared with the traditional one consisting of only forward cutter movement. A cutting experiment is conducted with different tool paths and the CMM measurement verifies the effectiveness of the proposed method.  相似文献

In this paper, techniques of 5-axis pencil-cut machining planning with a 5-DOF (degree of freedom) output haptic interface are presented. Detailed techniques of haptic rendering and tool interference avoidance are discussed for haptic-aided 5-axis pencil-cut tool path generation. Five-axis tool path planning has attracted great attention in CAD/CAM and NC machining. For efficient machining of complex surfaces, pencil-cut uses relatively smaller tools to remove the remaining material at corners or highly curved regions that are inaccessible with larger tools. As a critical problem for 5-axis pencil-cut tool path planning, the tasks of tool orientation determination and tool collision avoidance are achieved with a developed 5-DOF haptic interface. A Two-phase rendering approach is proposed for haptic rendering and force-torque feedback calculation with haptic interface. A Dexel-based volume modeling method is developed for global tool interference avoidance with surrounding components in a 5-axis machining environment. Hardware and software implementation of the haptic pencil-cut system with practical examples are also presented in this paper. The presented technique can be used for CAD/CAM, 5-axis machining planning and virtual prototyping.  相似文献

This paper presents a machining potential field (MPF) method to generate tool paths for multi-axis sculptured surface machining. A machining potential field is constructed by considering both the part geometry and the cutter geometry to represent the machining-oriented information on the part surface for machining planning. The largest feasible machining strip width and the optimal cutting direction at a surface point can be found on the constructed machining potential field. The tool paths can be generated by following the optimal cutting direction. Compared to the traditional iso-parametric and iso-planar path generation methods, the generated MPF multi-axis tool paths can achieve better surface finish with shorter machining time. Feasible cutter sizes and cutter orientations can also be determined by using the MPF method. The developed techniques can be used to automate the multi-axis tool path generation and to improve the machining efficiency of sculptured surface machining.  相似文献

Five-axis CNC flank machining has been commonly used in the industry for shaping complex geometries. Geometrical errors typically occur in five-axis flank finishing of non-developable surfaces using a cylindrical cutter. Most existing tool path planning methods adjust discrete cutter locations to reduce these errors. An excessive change in the cutter center or axis between consecutive cutter locations may deteriorate the machined surface quality. This study developed a tool path generation method for minimizing geometrical errors on finished surfaces while preserving high-order continuity in the cutter motion. A tool path is described using the moving trajectory of the cutter center and changes in two rotational angles in compact curve representations. An optimization scheme is proposed to search for optimal curve control points and the resulting tool path. A curve subdivision mechanism progressively increases the control points during the search process. Simulation results confirm that the proposed method not only enhances the computational efficiency of tool path generation but also improves the machined surface finish. This study provides a computational approach for precision tool path planning in five-axis CNC flank finishing of ruled surfaces.  相似文献

Traditionally, for the flat-end tool, due to the intertwined dependence relationship between its axis and reference point, most 5-axis tool-path generation algorithms take a decoupled two-stage strategy: first, the so-called cutter contact (CC) curves are placed on the part surface; then, for each CC curve, tool orientations are decided that will accommodate local and/or global constraints such as minimum local gouging and global collision avoidance. For the former stage, usually simplistic “offset” methods are adopted to determine the cutter contact curves, such as the iso-parametric or iso-plane method; whereas for the latter, a common practice is to assign fixed tilt and yaw angle to the tool axis regardless the local curvature information and, in the case of considering global interference, the tool orientation is decided solely based on avoiding global collision but ignoring important local machining efficiency issues. This independence between the placement of CC curves and the determination of tool orientations, as well as the rigid way in which the tilt and yaw angle get assigned, incurs many undesired problems, such as the abrupt change of tool orientations, the reduced efficiency in machining, the reduced finishing surface quality, the unnecessary dynamic loading on the machine, etc. In this paper, we present a 5-axis tool-path generation algorithm that aims at alleviating these problems and thus improving the machining efficiency and accuracy. In our algorithm, the CC curves are contour lines on the part surface that satisfy the iso-conic property — the surface normal vectors on each CC curve fall on a right small circle on the Gaussian sphere, and the tool orientations associated to a CC curve are determined by the principle of minimum tilt (also sometimes called lead) angle that seeks fastest cutting rate without local gouging. Together with an elaborate scheme for determining the step-over distance between adjacent CC curves that seeks maximum material removal, the presented algorithm offers some plausible advantages over most existing 5-axis tool-path generation algorithms, particularly in terms of reducing the angular velocity and acceleration of the rotary axes of the machine. The simulation experiments of the proposed algorithm and their comparison with a leading commercial CAM software toolbox are also provided that demonstrate the claimed advantages.  相似文献

5-Axis sculptured surface machining is simulated using discrete geometric models of the tool and workpiece to determine the tool contact area, and a discrete mechanistic model to estimate the cutting forces. An extended Z-buffer model represents the workpiece, while a discrete axial slice model represents the cutting tool. Determination of the contact area for a given tool move requires a swept envelope (SWE) of the tool path. The SWE is used to find the intersections of the tool envelope with Z-buffer elements (ZDVs) representing the workpiece. A 3-axis approximation of the 5-axis tool movement is used to simplify the calculations while maintaining a desired level of accuracy. The intersection of the SWE with each ZDV yields segments which are used to find the contact area between the cutter and the workpiece for a given tool path. The contact area is subsequently used with the discrete force model to calculate the vector cutting force acting on the tool.  相似文献

NC machining of a nonzero genus triangular mesh surface is being more widely confronted than before in the manufacturing field. At present, due to the complexity of geometry computation related to tool path generation, only one path pattern of iso-planar type is adopted in real machining of such surface. To improve significantly 5-axis machining of the nonzero genus mesh surface, it is necessary to develop a more efficient and robust tool path generation method. In this paper, a new method of generating spiral or contour-parallel tool path is proposed, which is inspired by the cylindrical helix or circle which are a set of parallel lines on the rectangular region obtained by unwrapping the cylinder. According to this idea, the effective data structure and algorithm are first designed to transform a nonzero genus surface into a genus-0 surface such that the conformal map method can be used to build the bidirectional mapping between the genus-0 surface and the rectangular region. In this rectangular region, the issues of spiral or contour-parallel tool path generation fall into the category of simple straight path planning. Accordingly, the formula for calculating the parameter increment for the guide line is derived by the difference scheme on the mesh surface and an accuracy improvement method is proposed based on the edge curve interpolation for determining the cutter contact (CC) point. These guarantee that the generated tool path can meet nicely the machining requirement. To improve further the kinematic and dynamic performance of 5-axis machine tool, a method for optimizing tool orientation is also preliminarily investigated. Finally, the experiments are performed to demonstrate the proposed method and show that it can generate nicely the spiral tool path or contour-parallel tool path on the nonzero genus mesh surface and also can guarantee the smooth change of tool orientation.  相似文献

Global interference detection is a critical problem in 5-axis NC machining of free-form surfaces. Based on the hierarchical oriented bounding box (OBB) which is used in virtual reality to detect spatial collisions between 3D objects, a new global interference detection method is developed in this paper. In this method, in order to simplify the computation process of updating tool positions and orientations in 5-axis machining, the cutter and cutter holder are modeled by a hierarchical OBB structure, whereas the workpiece surfaces are approximated by an octree. Interference detection is conducted between the tool OBBs and the gray octants of the surface octree with the separating axis theorem. With the hierarchical structure of octree, if interference is found in one octant, its sub-octants are further processed to locate the exact colliding leaf nodes and the discretized surface points contained in these leaf nodes are tested with a conventional vector calculation method for exact interference detection; if no interference is detected, all the sub-octants are then considered as interference free and are not processed further. Meanwhile, with the hierarchical structure of the tool OBBs, should interference occur between octants and the OBBs in the first level of the hierarchical structure, the sub-OBBs in the second level would be further tested. Otherwise it could be determined with certainty that there is no interference between the tool and the octant.  相似文献

Optimization of 5-axis high-speed machining using a surface based approach   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper deals with optimization of 5-axis trajectories in the context of high-speed machining. The objective is to generate tool paths suited to high speed follow-up during machining in order to respect cutting conditions, while ensuring the geometrical conformity of the machined part. For this purpose, the optimization of the tool axis orientations is performed using a surface model for the tool path, which allows integrating kinematical limits of the machine tool as well as classical geometrical constraints. The illustration of the optimization through an example highlights the gain in machining time, thereby demonstrating the feasibility of such an approach.  相似文献

A new format for 5-axis tool path computation, using Bspline curves   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
This article presents a new format of tool path polynomial interpolation in 5-axis machining. The linear interpolation usually used produces tangency discontinuities along the tool path, sources of decelerations of the machine tool whereas polynomial interpolation reduces the appearance of such discontinuities. The new format involves a faster tool path and a better surface quality. However, it imposes a modification of the process so as to take the interpolation format and the inverse kinematics transformation (necessary to 5-axis machining) into account. This article deals with the geometrical problem of tool path calculation. Validation tests are detailed. They show that profits concern the reduction of machining time as well as the quality of the machined surfaces. Indeed, the trajectory continuity avoids the appearance of marks and facets.  相似文献

Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) occupies an increasingly important role in engineering with all it has to offer in terms of new possibilities and improving designer/manufacturer productivity. The present study addresses machining of free-form surfaces on a 3-axis NC machine tool. There have recently been a large number of studies devoted to planning tool paths on free-form surfaces with various strategies being adopted. These strategies are intended to increase efficiency by reducing the overall length of machining. Often, the choice of the cutter is arbitrary and the work focuses on planning. In order to boost productivity, the present work offers assistance in choosing the cutting tool, the machining direction and cutting by surface zones, adopting a milling strategy by parallel planes. To do so, a comparison is made between milling using a spherical end milling cutter and a torus end milling cutter with the same outer radius. This comparison relates to the radius of curvature of the trace left by the cutter at the point of contact between the tool and the workpiece in relation to the direction of feed motion.  相似文献

The authors have recently developed methods for cutter orientation and tool path generation in 5-axis sculptured surface machining, where the design surface is approximated locally by a quadric. This paper presents, from a purely geometric perspective, the fundamental theory for optimising the cutter orientation on a quadric, which maximises the machined strip width whilst avoiding local and rear gouging. The analysis focuses on the flat-end cutter which is modelled by a circular cylinder but can be generalised for any fillet-end cutter using an appropriate offset of the design surface and the concept of geometric equivalency. The theory is illustrated by three examples.  相似文献

This paper presents a new approach for the determination of efficient tool paths in the machining of sculptured surfaces using 3-axis ball-end milling. The objective is to keep the scallop height constant across the machined surface such that redundant tool paths are minimized. Unlike most previous studies on constant scallop-height machining, the present work determines the tool paths without resorting to the approximated 2D representations of the 3D cutting geometry. Two offset surfaces of the design surface, the scallop surface and the tool center surface, are employed to successively establish scallop curves on the scallop surface and cutter location tool paths for the design surface. The effectiveness of the present approach is demonstrated through the machining of a typical sculptured surface. The results indicate that constant scallop-height machining achieves the specified machining accuracy with fewer and shorter tool paths than the existing tool path generation approaches.  相似文献
