Most of us choose engineering as a profession because we like to solve problems and build things. I picture an engineer as a whole person, a well-rounded, well-adjusted individual who is capable of conducting business like anyone else, with the added benefit of technical skills. We are the modern-day renaissance men and women, like Edison and Da Vinci. These men could invent and create. They were artists who had a broad view of the world and saw possibilities that no one had seen before. There is no reason why we can't be like them and do even more. We understand more science and have modern tools like computers and lasers to design and build things, plus we can use information technology to gather data when we have knowledge gaps. The point is that, once we have a clear picture of who we want to be, now more than ever before, that vision is obtainable, and that vision becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy if we choose to act on it. Certainly, if we think we can't do it, we won't. I'd like to share my vision of an accomplished 21st century engineer and offer some thoughts on how to get there. I see successful engineers as people who take an early interest in science and engineering. They have alert minds and a natural curiosity for everything around them. Their drive to learn is insatiable, soaking up knowledge constantly. They do things for the love of it, not simply for monetary rewards, but for the pride and personal satisfaction that comes with doing something particularly well  相似文献

This article explores the history and diversity of this remarkable technology, with emphasis on advances in vacuum-electronic amplifiers, including the microwave power module (MPM), that have been enabled by the ongoing development of modeling and simulation tools. This paper emphasizes the urgency of scientific-and-technical and sociopolitical problems of the modern nuclear power industry without solving of which the transition from local nuclear power systems now in operation to a large-scale nuclear power industry would be impossible. The existing concepts of the longterm strategy of the development of the nuclear power industry have been analyzed. On the basis of the scenarios having been developed it was shown that the most promising alternative is the orientation towards the closed nuclear fuel cycle with fast neutron reactors (hereinafter referred to as fast reactors) that would meet the requirements on the acceptable safety. It was concluded that the main provisions of “The Strategy of the Development of the Nuclear Power Industry of Russia for the First Half of the 21st Century” approved by the Government of the Russian Federation in the year 2000 remain the same at present as well, although they require to be elaborated with due regard for new realities in the market for fossil fuels, the state of both the Russian and the world economy, as well as tightening of requirements related to safe operation of nuclear power stations (NPSs) (for example, after the severe accident at the Fukushima nuclear power station, Japan) and nonproliferation of nuclear weapons.  相似文献

The fundamental concepts of electric heat tracing seem quite simple on the surface. However, anyone who has been involved in an electric heat tracing "design and build" project realizes the fallacy of this notion: pipes are not always surrounded by perfect insulation envelopes; the insulation envelope can often be interrupted by pipe supports and other appendages that result in heat sink effects; pipes and vessels are not solid structures; rather, they contain or are surrounded by fluids that can be in natural motion due to density gradients resulting from heating; pipes may be constructed of nonthermally conductive materials, such as plastics, which have significantly reduced heat transfer coefficients and reduced temperature use ranges. and large diameter metallic pipes can have significant gradients around the circumference due to the lack of symmetry of the applied electric heating. This article looks at some of these not-so-straightforward aspects of electric heat tracing and demonstrate how these applications are being mastered due to advancements in engineering technology for the 21st century. In particular the article discusses the use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to the problems of heat tracing.
