The Society for Unification Psychology ("SUNI"—pronounced as "sunny") was formed by a group of psychologists concerned about the growing issues of diversity and fragmentation in psychology. The Society held its first organizational meeting at the 1985 APA convention. It is intended that SUNI will become a special interest group of APA's Division 24, Theoretical and Philosophical Psychology. The Society's purpose is to stimulate discussion of issues of unity and disunity in psychology by: (1) planning symposia and other presentations at APA and related conventions; (2) conducting Society interest group meetings at these conventions; and (3) publishing a Newsletter. This discusses the seventh year of the APA'S Visiting Scientist Program supported by the National Science Foundation. The general purpose and procedures have been described in a series of six earlier reports (Ross, 1961, 1962, 1964, 196Sa, 1965b, 1966). The program has the following objectives: (a) to stimulate interest in the scientific aspects of psychology at the collegiate level; (6) to present some of the frontiers of psychological research and application to small institutions where psychology is not now fully developed; (c1) to provide an opportunity to administrative officers, staff members, and students at colleges to consult with leaders in psychological science; and (d) to stimulate students to consider careers in psychology, including the teaching of psychology. The American Psychological Association's Visiting Scientist Program has now completed its twelfth and final year of operation as a National Science Foundation-sponsored activity. The APA is planning to continue the program under the auspices of the Educational Affairs Office while seeking alternate funding. As in the past, the Visiting Scientist Program provided colleges and small universities with visits from eminent psychologists who offered their services as either scientific lecturers or educational consultants. Over 1,000 such visits have been made to educational institutions across the United States, 84 of which were made during 1971-1972. Throughout its existence the program has maintained the following objectives: (a) to stimulate interest in the scientific aspects of psychology at the collegiate level; (6) to present some of the new developments in psychological research and application; (c) to provide psychology departments with expert consultation regarding curricula, laboratories, staffing, programs, and procedures; (d) to acquaint students with the opportunities for advanced study and scientific and professional careers in psychology, including the teaching of psychology. For the last several years a special effort has been made to include psychologists and institutions which would serve as representatives of minority groups. This year's participants included 12 black psychologists, 9 women psychologists, and 1 Indian psychologist; 14 black institutions, and 2 women's colleges. The reports of the visits were very favorable, and the Educational Affairs Office would like to express its appreciation to all of those who contributed to the success of this year's program. This letter informs that the APA Division of Industrial Psychology (Division 14) appointed an ad hoc committee in 1962 to review the movement to establish a large-scale program for testing college students who might be seeking positions in industry. There has been an increasing interest shown in this by many organizations, and one attempt has been made to establish such a program by the National Industrial Conference Board, Inc. The Executive Committee of Division 14 has voted to accept and endorse the Statement of Principles devised by this committee. It has also voted to circulate the Statement of Principles to certain organizations who have shown interest in developing such a program, including the Psychological Corporation, the Educational Testing Service, Science Research Associates, Inc., College Placement Council, Inc., and Careers, Inc. The Statement of Principles and further considerations are outlined. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

From Robert Q. Pollard's national leadership in deafness and mental health service delivery, advocacy, research, and training and his innovative multidisciplinary mental health traineeship program exclusively for deaf individuals to his establishment of a vibrant special interest section on deafness within APA's Division of Rehabilitation Psychology, he has led the way to providing full access to the profession and to the services of the profession for deaf individuals. His commitment to and effective advancement of a psychology open to and appropriately serving deaf individuals and other persons with disabilities substantially advances psychology in the public interest and fulfills our discipline's highest aspiration: to advance human welfare. This journal discusses the life and contributions of Robert Q. Pollard which enabled him to win the Psychology in the Public Interest Award in 1994. Emory L. Cowen.
Presents an overview of the career contributions of Emory L. Cowen. For his remarkable contributions to conceptual, empirical and human service advances in the fields of community and clinical psychology, community mental health and education. He has been instrumental in the creation of a field for an entire generation of psychologists. His work has changed public schools throughout the United States. His ideas, research, model programs, program evaluations, and workshops have inspired others to generate new programs that provide affordable human services to thousands of children who are otherwise unlikely to receive help. He pioneered early detection and secondary prevention research. His clear thinking and conceptual challenges have fostered the study of primary prevention and wellness in mental health, both as a field for research and as a social policy. His tireless efforts as President of APA's Division of Community Psychology, a member of the Prevention Task Panel of the President's Commission on Mental Health, and the APA Task Force on Promotion, Prevention and Intervention Alternatives in Psychology are examples of his energetic contributions to psychology in the public interest. Public interest advocacy and political activism are vital to the guild interests of psychology, just as they are essential to the evolution of any discipline that seeks professional recognition outside of the university laboratory. Division 38 (Health Psychology) of the American Psychological Association (APA) has conducted monthly policy dinner meetings featuring national health policy experts as speakers to develop an appreciation within the division for the complexities of formulating public policy. Groups of psychologists outside the structure of the APA Central Office need to make efforts to build political support if psychology is to play a larger role in public policy. Presents the 1986 Convention Program of the American Psychological Association's Division of Theoretical and Philosophical Psychology. The quality of the submissions was high and the process of choosing which to include was difficult. The program allotment was expanded by two hours and thereby included almost sixty people on the program. Their papers address the spectrum of topics within philosophical and theoretical psychology. Several programs specifically address the issue of theoretical foundations of applied psychology, a special theme of this year's program. Comments on the article by A. E. Shealy (see record 2005-09632-004) describing the teaching approach in forensic psychology. The current author notes that if, as Shealy proposes, advantages and positive rewards are available to psychologists participating in the judicial system, then it is also important to evaluate the negative aspects. Furthermore, a confrontation of the inequities with the advocate and adversarial approach needs more exploration in Shealy's system. The author describes a graduate program in forensic psychology at the University of Washington, in which students in law, psychiatry, and psychology, psychology interns, and other health science professionals will be able to participate. Discusses the numbers and percentages of students who graduated with a major in psychology from Washington Square College between 1939 and 1960. The author states that if these trends are typical of what is happening in other colleges, then it can be expected that graduate departments of psychology will continue to have ample sources of recruitment. Edna Heidbreder died in February, 1985 in Bedford, Massachusetts after a long life of distinguished contributions to psychology. Heidbreder is best known for her Seven Psychologies published in 1933. This book has taught history and systems of psychology to generations of students and is still doing so. Seven Psychologies was written when scientific psychology considered itself scarcely past its first half century; now the official centennial celebrations are behind us and psychology has changed vastly. Yet the book continues in use. While at the University of Minnesota, Heidbreder became interested in the then-young testing movement, particularly the testing of personality characteristics. She did early work in testing introversion and extraversion, the "normal inferiority complex," and related subjects. In her later work, Heidbreder returned to systematic problems. Heidbreder was active in the American Psychological Association (APA) and in other professional societies. She was a member of Council of APA, was president of Division 1, and was president of the Eastern Psychological Association. She was intensely interested in the education of women and in the colleges that encouraged women to develop and enjoy their abilities, including their intellectual abilities. Wellesley and Radcliffe gave her an opportunity to contribute to this effort, and this she did brilliantly. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献
