BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Physicians in the 1920s and 1930s began to treat patients with chronic pain syndromes using regional anesthetic techniques for both temporary and permanent block of pain pathways. The founding of the American Society of Regional Anesthesia (ASRA) in 1923 provided a unique venue for the dissemination of information concerning regional anesthesia for both surgery and chronic pain management. METHODS: The growth of chronic pain management on a national basis was assessed by using the Quarterly Cumulative Index to the Medical Literature to trace the distribution of information on regional anesthesia. From the Minutes of Meeting of the American Society of Regional Anesthesia, presented papers and the discussion that followed were analyzed. RESULTS: Inquiries into regional anesthesia during the 1920s and 1930s predominantly dealt with technique. For the first time pain papers were listed under the regional anesthesia heading in the Index. The papers presented at ASRA meetings during the period helped develop the use of regional anesthesia for both chronic pain management and surgical anesthesia. CONCLUSIONS: The ASRA was instrumental in bringing together physicians interested in regional anesthesia and pain management. During the 1930s physician anesthetists came to predominate as the organization's officers and members and helped translate the work of the ASRA into a part of the knowledge required to be a specialist physician in anesthesia.

Family routines and rituals--The importance of family functioning: Comment on the special section.

This diverse collection of papers highlights routines and rituals in family life. Just as individual family members bring unique styles and perspectives to the family table, to be incorporated into a family framework, so do each of these papers present rich and varied research questions, designs, and measurement strategies that enrich our understanding of family routine behavior patterns and ritual meanings. This series adds to our conceptualization of family routines and rituals within a systems perspective highlighting: 1) families are comprised of multiple levels that operate individually; interact with each other; and as a whole, reveal properties distinct from separate parts; 2) families tend toward stability in meaningful patterns of functioning; and 3) family functioning has meaning for individual outcomes. History of the Western Psychological Association.

The Western Psychological Association began in 1921 with 14 members. "In 1962 it had 1917 members. The growth in size has naturally been accompanied by greater formality in the organization which has as its purpose the promotion of research through the conduct of an annual meeting at which psychologists are allowed to read research papers to each other. "The Classified Telephone Directory and the APA Directory… continue to provide crude barometer readings of some public activities by individuals claiming to be 'psychologists.'… At the present time, 55.8% of all individual advertisers are APA members, as compared to 46.7% in 1953 and 18.5% in 1947. In actual numbers, the extent of the APA takeover of the 'Psychology Section' is even more impressive: from 38 in 1947 to 323 in 1957, an increase of 750%p In comparison, the growth of non-APA members has been only 53% (from 167 to 256). Whereas in 1947 non-APA advertisers outnumbered listed APA members 5:1 (167:38), ten years later the ratio is better than even in favor of APA psychologists (256:323)."
