In the present work, statistical (EOCs) and block (OBCs) ethylene‐octene copolymers, with similar densities and crystallinities, were used as impact modifiers of isotactic polypropylene (iPP), and the toughening effects of these two types of elastomers were compared. The viscosity curves of EOCs were similar to those of OBCs with equivalent melt flow rate (MFR), enabling a comparison of the viscosity ratio and elastomer type as independent variables. No distinct differences on the crystal forms and crystal perfection of iPP matrix in various blends were observed by thermal analysis. Morphological examination showed that OBCs form smaller dispersed domains than EOCs with similar MFRs. The flexural modulus, yield stress, stress and strain at break showed the same variation tendency for all the investigated polypropylene/elastomer blends. However, the room temperature Izod impact toughness of iPP/OBC blend was higher than that of iPP/EOC blend containing elastomer with the similar MFRs. The experimental results indicated that the compatibility of iPP/OBCs was much higher than that of iPP/EOCs. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2011  相似文献

To study the effect of the molecular architecture of a copolymer on its miscibility with corresponding homopolymers a series of block copolymers of styrene and isoprene with diblock, triblock and four-arm star architectures have been prepared and the morphologies of the blends of the copolymers and polyisoprene with different molecular weights have been examined by electron microscopy. The results show that miscibility varies in the sequence diblock>triblock>four-arm star copolymers. This sequence is in the opposite direction to the variation of the architectural complexity of the block copolymers, i.e. the more complex is molecular architecture, the greater is conformation restriction in microdomain formation and the less is solubility of homopolymer in corresponding domains.  相似文献

New polymer blends of polypropylene random copolymer (PP‐R) and poly(ethylene‐octene) (POE) were prepared by melt‐blending process using a corotating twin‐screw extruder. The POE content was varied up to 35%. The toughening efficiency of POE for PP‐R was evaluated by the mechanical properties of the resulted PP‐R/POE blends. The crystallization behavior and morphology of the blends were also studied. Results show that POE acts as nucleation agent to induce the crystallization of PP‐R matrix at higher crystallization temperature. Super‐toughened PP‐R/POE blends (Izod impact strength more than 500 J/m) can be readily achieved with only 10 wt % of POE. The high toughness of PP‐R/POE is attributed to cavitation and shear yielding of matrix PP‐R, as revealed by the morphology studies. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2011  相似文献

Compatibilizing effects of styrene/rubber block copolymers poly(styrene‐b‐butadiene‐b‐styrene) (SBS), poly(styrene‐b‐ethylene‐co‐propylene) (SEP), and two types of poly(styrene‐b‐ethylene‐co‐butylene‐b‐styrene) (SEBS), which differ in their molecular weights on morphology and selected mechanical properties of immiscible polypropylene/polystyrene (PP/PS) 70/30 blend were investigated. Three different concentrations of styrene/rubber block copolymers were used (2.5, 5, and 10 wt %). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to examine the phase morphology of blends. The SEM analysis revealed that the size of the dispersed particles decreases as the content of the compatibilizer increases. Reduction of the dispersed particles sizes of blends compatibilized with SEP, SBS, and low‐molecular weight SEBS agrees well with the theoretical predictions based on interaction energy densities determined by the binary interaction model of Paul and Barlow. The SEM analysis confirmed improved interfacial adhesion between matrix and dispersed phase. The TEM micrographs showed that SBS, SEP, and low‐molecular weight SEBS enveloped and joined pure PS particles into complex dispersed aggregates. Bimodal particle size distribution was observed in the case of SEP and low‐molecular weight SEBS addition. Notched impact strength (ak), elongation at yield (εy), and Young's modulus (E) were measured as a function of weight percent of different types of styrene/rubber block copolymers. The ak and εy were improved whereas E gradually decreased with increasing amount of the compatibilizer. The ak was improved significantly by the addition of SEP. It was found that the compatibilizing efficiency of block copolymer used is strongly dependent on the chemical structure of rubber block, molecular weight of block copolymer molecule, and its concentration. The SEP diblock copolymer proved to be a superior compatibilizer over SBS and SEBS triblock copolymers. Low‐molecular weight SEBS appeared to be a more efficient compatibilizer in PP/PS blend than high‐molecular weight SEBS. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 72: 291–307, 1999  相似文献

Blends of polypropylene copolymer (PP‐cp) and a polyolefinic elastomer (POE) were prepared by a melt‐blending process at 210°C and 60 rpm using a counterrotating twin‐screw extruder. The POE content was varied up to 25%. The shear viscosity over a wide range of shear rate was measured. All blend compositions showed well‐defined zero shear viscosity and shear thinning behavior. The melt viscosity values were between those of the principal components in all cases. Rheology of blends shows different behavior up to concentrations of POE corresponding to the tough–brittle transition. The linear viscoelastic properties (G′, G″, η*, η′, η″) were used to check the miscibility of the two components in the melt state. All blend compositions showed a good degree of miscibility over the range of POE concentrations studied. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The thermal behavior and the miscibility of an in‐situ polypropylene blend named polypropylene catalloys (PP‐cats) were investigated by using modulated differential scanning calorimeter (MDSC). It is found that all PP‐cats samples present two glass transitions, one of which is ascribed to the ethylene‐propylene random copolymer (EPR), and the other, to isotactic polypropylene (PP). However, no glass transition of ethylene‐propylene block copolymer (E‐b‐P) responsible for a third component in PP‐cats could be found. With the increase of EPR, the glass transition temperatures responding to PP and EPR components, Tg, PP and Tg, EPR, shift to low temperature, because of the enhancement of the interaction between PP and EPR component and the increase of ethylene content in EPR, respectively. Furthermore, the difference between Tg, PP and Tg, EPR remarkably decreases with the increase of the total ethylene content in PP‐cats, which indicates that the miscibility of PP‐cats is strongly dependent on the composition. Comparing the Tg, PP and Tg, EPR with Tg of fractionated PP and EPR, we ascribe the Tg change of PP fraction to the increase of EPR content; while that of EPR, to the increase of ethylene content in EPR. These experimental results suggest that the existence of E‐b‐P plays an important role in improving the miscibility between propylene homopolymer and EPR in PP‐cats. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Segmented block copolymers from different grades of hydroxyl terminated liquid natural rubber (HTNR) (M n 3000, 8800, 10,000, and 17,000) and polypropylene oxide (PPO) (M n 1000, 2000, 3000, and 4000) have been synthesized and characterized by spectral analysis, thermal analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and mechanical testing. The glass transition temperature of NR block was found to be at about ?64°C, which is independent of the PPO whose transition is around 15°C. The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) shows that the thermal degradation of the samples proceeded in two steps characteristic of the immiscible components. The inability of PPO segments to provide physical crosslinking and the subsequent formation of hard domains is reflected in the low tensile properties and tear properties. The amorphous nature of the PPO phase and its immiscibility with NR phase are evidenced by the SEM studies. The effect of molecular weight of PPO as well as HTNR on the properties of the block copolymers has also been discussed. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. JAppl Polym Sci 103: 909–916, 2007  相似文献

The compatibilizing effect of the triblock copolymer poly(styrene-b-butadiene-b-styrene) (SBS) on the morphology and mechanical properties of immiscible polypropylene/polystyrene (PP/PS) blends were studied. Blends with three different weight ratios of PP and PS were prepared and three different concentrations of SBS were used for investigations of its compatibilizing effects. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that SBS reduced the diameter of the PS-dispersed particles as well as improved the adhesion between the matrix and the dispersed phase. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed that in the PP matrix dispersed particles were complex “honeycomblike” aggregates of PS particles enveloped and joined together with the SBS compatibilizer. Wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) analysis showed that the degree of crystallinity of PP/PS/SBS slightly exceeded the values given by the addition rule. At the same time, addition of SBS to pure PP and to PP/PS blends changed the orientation parameters A110 and C significantly, indicating an obvious SBS influence on the crystallization process in the PP matrix. SBS interactions with PP and PS influenced the mechanical properties of the compatibilized PP/PS/SBS blends. Addition of SBS decreased the yield stress and the Young's modulus and improved the elongation at yield as well as the notched impact strength in comparison to the binary PP/PS blends. Some theoretical models for the determination of the Young's modulus of binary PP/PS blends were used for comparison with the experimental results. The experimental line was closest to the series model line. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 69: 2625–2639, 1998  相似文献

Adhesion of four ethylene-octene block copolymers (OBCs) to polypropylene (PP) and high density polyethylene (HDPE) was studied by peeling PP/OBC/HDPE microlayered tapes. The four OBCs had different comonomer composition, mechanical properties and phase morphology. Through the Irwin damage zone analysis, it was found that the stress-strain behavior of OBC was the primary factor that determined the adhesion strength. Effectiveness of these OBCs as compatibilizers in PP/HDPE blends was also investigated. Toughness of all OBC-compatibilized blends was effectively improved. The OBCs having higher adhesion strength also resulted in better mechanical performance for the compatibilized blends. A quantitative correlation was established between the adhesion strength and mechanical performance of the blends.  相似文献

The effect of processing conditions and elastomer content on the toughening of Polypropylene (PP) by melt blending with styrene/ethylene‐butylene/styrene tri‐block copolymer (SEBS) in a twin‐screw extruder has been investigated. The parameters analyzed were: temperature profile, screw speed, and feed rate of the blend components. Their effect was evaluated through the mechanical properties (tensile strength and Izod impact resistance at room temperature) as well as the morphology of the dispersed phase by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that the impact resistance increases with increasing rotor speed and feed rate and decreases when the temperature profile is increased. The parameter with the greatest effect on the mechanical properties was the variation in rotor speed. Despite the fact that impact resistance as high as 25 times that of neat PP has been achieved with blends containing 20 wt % SEBS, no significant modification in phase morphology has been observed. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. One polypropylene (PP) was mixed with two ethylene butene copolymers (EBM). EBM1 had 12.5 mol % of butene and was immiscible with the PP. EBM2 had 51.6 mol % of butene and was miscible with the PP. The dispersed PP in EBM1 showed fractionalized crystallization behavior with a crystallization temperature at around 45°C and a much slower isothermal crystallization rate comparing to the neat PP. The PP did not exhibit fractionalized crystallization behavior in EBM2. EBM1 did not decrease both the crystallization and melting temperatures of the continuous PP. However, EBM2 could decrease both the two temperatures. It was found that EBM2 could largely suppress the epitaxial lamellar branching of the PP. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Some polyolefin elastomers were compared as compatibilizers for blends of polypropylene (PP) with 30 wt % high‐density polyethylene (HDPE). The compatibilizers included a multiblock ethylene–octene copolymer (OBC), two statistical ethylene–octene copolymers (EO), two propylene–ethylene copolymers (P/E), and a styrenic block copolymer (SBC). Examination of the blend morphology by AFM showed that the compatibilizer was preferentially located at the interface between the PP matrix and the dispersed HDPE particles. The brittle‐to‐ductile (BD) transition was determined from the temperature dependence of the blend toughness, which was taken as the area under the stress–strain curve. All the compatibilized blends had lower BD temperature than PP. However, the blend compatibilized with OBC had the best combination of low BD temperature and high toughness. Examination of the deformed blends by scanning electron microscopy revealed that in the best blends, the compatibilizer provided sufficient interfacial adhesion so that the HDPE domains were able to yield and draw along with the PP matrix. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The morphologies of solution cast linear and star poly(styrene-b-isobutylene-b-styrene) (SIBS) block copolymers, of ∼0.3-0.33 polystyrene (PS) volume fraction, were investigated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) methods. The linear (L) and 4-arm star materials have hexagonal packed cylinder morphologies. TEM indicates more continuous domains for the 3-arm SIBS and SAXS indicates lamellar morphology. The diameters of the PS cylinders are 25-30 nm in all cases, but inter-domain distances increase in the order: L→3-arm star →4-arm star SIBS. Dynamic mechanical analysis shows a decrease of plateau modulus in the order L→3-arm →4-arm star. Tg for the PIB phase is independent of star-branching. Tg increases for the PS block phase from L- to 3-SIBS although Tg(PS) for 4-SIBS is not significantly greater than that of L-SIBS. A high temperature shoulder on the PIB block glass transition peak is associated with sub-Rouse motions. Tensile modulus is essentially the same for L- and 3-SIBS but considerably greater for 4-SIBS. Stress levels and energy-to rupture increase in the order: L-SIBS <3-SIBS <4-SIBS and this behavior is rationalized in terms of the covalent junction points, entanglements, and hard block domain reinforcement. The results of cyclic deformation studies of hysteresis vs. maximum percent strain per cycle are interpreted in terms of irreversible morphological rearrangements, chain slippage through entanglements, and the influence of degree of star branching on motional constraints. There is a permanent set that increases while the stress required to extend the sample to a given strain decreases with each cycle. For cycles of lower maximum strain, and before PS block domains are disrupted, microscopic deformation is viewed as somewhat reversible, accompanied by a measure of energy dissipated as a consequence of slow relaxation kinetics of chain rearrangement vs. rate of bulk deformation. At high strain, a major fraction of the energy loss is attributed to irreversible, longer ranged disruption of the PS domains leading to permanent morphological change and permanent set. Percent hysteresis for all three cases decreases—then increases—with increasing maximum percent strain per cycle. The initial decrease is thought of in terms of a progressive decrease in the entropy of stretched chains with consecutive extensions where the chains are increasingly less able to contribute to hysteresis until the PS domains become disrupted on a large scale, after which the curves begin to rise.  相似文献

The effects of compatibilization on the toughening of polypropylene (PP) by melt blending with styrene/ethylene‐butylene/styrene tri‐block copolymer (SEBS) in a twin‐screw extruder were investigated. The compatibilizers used were SEBS functionalized with maleic anhydride (SEBS‐g‐MA), PP functionalized with acrylic acid (PP‐g‐AA), and bifunctional compound p‐phenylenediamine (PPD). The effects of the compatibilization were evaluated through the mechanical properties as well as through the determination of the phase morphology of the blends by scanning electron microscopy. Reactive compatibilized blends show up to a 30‐fold increase in impact strength compared with neat PP; likely the result of the reaction of the bifunctional compound (PPD) with the acid acrylic and maleic anhydride groups, this increase in strength rendered both morphological and mechanical stability to these blends. The addition of PPD to the blends significantly changed their phase morphologies, leading to larger average diameters of the dispersed particles, probably as a result of the morphological stabilization at the initial processing steps during extrusion, with the occurrence of chemical reactions.

Blends of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polypropylene (PP) at compositions 20/80 and 80/20 were modified with three different styrene–ethylene/butyl–ene-styrene (SEBS) triblock copolymers with the aim of improving the compatibility and in particular the toughness of the blends. The compatibilizers involved an unfunctionalized SEBS and two functionalized grades containing either maleic anhydride (SEBS-g-MAH) or glycidyl methacrylate (SEBS-g-GMA) grafted to the midblock. The effects of the compatibilizers were evaluated by studies on morphology and mechanical, thermal and rheological properties of the blends. The additon of 5 wt % of a SEBS copolymer was found to stabilize the blend morphology and to improve the impact strength. The effect was, however, far more pronounced with the functionalized copolymers. Particularly high toughness combined with rather high stiffness was achieved with SEBS-g-GMA for the PET-rich composition. Addition of the functionalized SEBS copolymers resulted in a finer dispersion of the minor phase and clearly improved interfacial adhesion. Shifts in the glass transition temperature of the PET phase and increase in the melt viscosity of the compatibilized blends indicated enhanced interactions between the discrete PET and PP phases induced by the functionalized compatibilizer, in particular SEBS-g-GMA. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Nanocomposites of cyclic olefin copolymer (COC) and two types of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with different aspect ratios were prepared. The morphology, thermal behavior, and electrical conductivity of the nanocomposites were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, thermal gravimetric analysis, and the DC conductivity measurement. It was found that the developed nanocomposite preparation method resulted in good nanotubes dispersion in the polymer matrix for both types of MWCNTs. No appreciable differences in glass transition temperatures were observed between the pure COC and nanocomposites. On the other hand, CNTs significantly improved the thermo‐oxidative stability of the COC. The nanocomposites showed significant delay in onset of degradation and the degradation temperature was ~ 40°C higher than that of the pure COC. The nanocomposites also showed substantially higher DC conductivity, which increased with the nanotube concentration and aspect ratio. An increase of DC electrical conductivity over 109 times can be achieved by the addition of 2 wt % CNTs. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2012  相似文献

Polyamide 6/polypropylene (PA6/PP=70/30 parts) blends containing 4 phr (parts per hundred resin) of organophilic modified montmorillonite (organoclay) were prepared using twin screw extruder followed by injection molding. Maleated polypropylene (MAH-g-PP) was used to compatibilize the blend system. The mechanical properties of PA6/PP nanocomposites were studied through tensile and flexural tests. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to assess the fracture surface morphology and the dispersion of the organoclay, respectively. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used to characterize the formation of nanocomposites. The thermal properties were characterized by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The dynamic mechanical properties of PA6/PP nanocomposites were analyzed by using dynamic mechanical thermal analyzer (DMTA). The strength and stiffness of PA6/PP nanocomposites were improved significantly in the presence of MAH-g-PP. This has been attributed to the synergistic effect of organoclay and MAH-g-PP. The MAH-g-PP compatibilized PA6/PP nanocomposites showed a homogeneous morphology supporting the compatibility improvement between PA6, PP and organoclay. TEM and XRD results revealed the formation of nanocomposites as the organoclay was intercalated and exfoliated. A possible chemical interaction between PA6, PP, organophilic modified montmorillonite and MAH-g-PP was proposed based on the experimental work.  相似文献

The surface compositions of a series of polystyrene‐b‐polydimethylsiloxane (PS‐b‐PDMS) and polystyrene‐g‐polydimethylsiloxane (PS‐g‐PDMS) copolymers were investigated using ATR‐FTIR and XPS technique. The results showed that enrichment of PDMS soft segments occurred on the surface of the block copolymers as well as on that of graft copolymers. And the magnitude order of the enrichment was as follows: PS‐b‐PDMS > PS‐g‐PDMS, which was attributed to the facilitating of the movement of the PDMS segments in PS‐b‐PDMS copolymer. Meanwhile, the solvent type and the contact medium had influence on the accumulation of PDMS on the surfaces. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2006  相似文献

A spherical TiCl4/MgCl2‐based catalyst was used in the synthesis of in situ isotactic polypropylene/ethylene–propylene random copolymer blends by propylene bulk polymerization and subsequent gas‐phase copolymerization of ethylene with propylene. Different copolymerization conditions, such as the reaction time, monomer pressure, and composition, were investigated, and their influences on the structure and properties of the products were studied. Raising the monomer pressure was the most effective way of speeding up the copolymerization, but it caused more increases in the random copolymer than the block copolymer fractions. Increasing the ethylene content of the monomer feed also resulted in higher reaction rates and copolymer contents, but the ethylene contents of both the random and block copolymer fractions were also raised. In situ blends that contain more than 50 wt % copolymer were prepared. The mechanical properties of the blends, including the impact strength and flexural modulus, were regulated in a rather broad range with changes in the copolymerization conditions. The properties were highly dependent on the amount, distribution, and chain structure of the copolymer fractions. The impact strength was influenced by both the random copolymer and block copolymer portions in a complicated way, whereas the flexural modulus was mainly determined by the amount of random copolymer. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
