Investigated the relationship between reading comprehension level, digit span, and short-term memory for Morse codelike temporal patterns in 3 experiments. Consistent with previous research on children, Exp I using 60 undergraduates demonstrated that Ss performed better when the 1st pattern was auditory than when it was visual or tactual. In Exps II and III with 36 undergraduates and 98 5th graders, respectively, no relationship was found between digit span and accuracy in comparing patterns of tones presented a few seconds apart. However, both tasks discriminated between children with normal and poor reading comprehension scores on a standardized test (Reading Comprehension subtest of the California Achievement Tests). It appears that these 2 tasks index fundamental processes that underlie reading comprehension. Digit span seems to assess an individual's ability to rapidly develop meaningful codes in memory for incoming verbal stimuli. The auditory pattern comparison procedure appears to measure ability to maintain information in short-term memory. (24 ref) (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

36 male alcoholics (13 with Korsakoff's syndrome) and 24 controls performed visual and auditory delayed-response tasks sensitive to prefrontal cortical damage in nonhuman primates. Korsakoff patients were consistently impaired compared with other Ss. Impairments by Korsakoff patients were evident when demands were placed on visual processing time (brief stimulus durations), and the deficits became exaggerated with increased demands on short-term memory. Under the most difficult experimental conditions, controls and non-Korsakoff alcoholics who were over 50 yrs old performed somewhat worse compared with younger groups 27–49 yrs old. Age-linked deficits were mild compared with Korsakoff's deficits, and age-group differences disappeared with easier task demands. The results implicate cortical pathology in alcoholism and normal chronological aging and suggest that prefrontal damage accompanies Korsakoff's syndrome. Examined the role of phonemic coding in short-term memory in 45 children with a reading disability, 38 children with a specific arithmetic disability, and 89 normal children, as measured by the Wide Range Achievement Test. Ss, aged 7–13 yrs, were administered a series of tasks that involved the visual or auditory presentation of rhyming and nonrhyming letters and either an oral or a written response. Younger Ss (7–8 yrs) with a reading disability did not show any difference between the recall of nonrhyming and rhyming letters, whereas normal Ss of the same age did. Older reading-disabled Ss (aged 9–23 yrs), like their normal counterparts, had significantly poorer recall of rhyming as opposed to nonrhyming letters. However, their overall levels of performance were significantly lower than normals. The same pattern was found with Ss with arithmetic disabilities for the visual presentation of stimuli. For the auditory presentation of stimuli, the performance of Ss with arithmetic disabilities resembled that of normals, except at the youngest ages. Whereas a deficiency in phonological coding may characterize younger children with learning disabilities, older children with learning disabilities appear to use a phonemic code but have a more general deficit in short-term memory. Investigated whether distractibility in learning disabled (LD) children could be predicted on the basis of diagnosed visual and auditory learning deficits. 26 children in Grades 2–4 were classified as having visual or auditory reading disorders on the basis of the Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities. They and 17 normally achieving children from the same grades performed visual and auditory recognition memory tasks with visual or auditory distractors presented on 80% of the trials. Analysis of error frequencies revealed that with distractors, Ss in the 2 LD groups made more errors and did not improve over trials as much as control Ss. However, the predicted interaction between learning disability modality and task or distractor modality did not obtain. Rather, all 3 S groups made more errors when task and distractor were in the same modality. (20 ref) (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Examined impaired set-shifting behavior frequently reported in brain-damaged Ss. Using a simple E-paced, 2-choice, visual, intradimensional reversal shift task, samples of brain-damaged (n = 24), alcoholic (n = 28), and control (n = 24) male patients were compared on errors, reaction time, and behavioral impulsivity (finger lift before signal). Alcoholic Ss were not significantly different from controls on any of the measures. As expected, brain-damaged Ss had significantly more total errors, longer reaction times, and higher impulsivity scores than controls. Differences in errors appeared to be due to difficulty in maintaining the perceptual and motor set rather than in set shifting. The importance of investigating disruptions in set maintenance in the performance of brain-damaged Ss is emphasized. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Stimuli that systematically varied the figural and spatial orientational information of visual designs were administered under 2 conditions to 4 groups of 15 male Ss each. The groups were composed of normal, process and reactive schizophrenic, and brain-damaged Ss (mean ages-26.3, 42.3, 27.6, and 52.9 yrs, respectively). The stimuli were administered in a recall condition requiring reproduction of stimuli from memory and in a required rotation condition necessitating reproduction in a 90. clockwise rotation. Brain-damaged Ss had a greater tendency than other groups to rotate when a mental rotation was required, but they had a greater tendency to make errors indicating the loss of figural information when reproducing from memory. Process schizophrenics performed much like brain-damaged persons in recall but the same as normals in required rotation, suggesting that discrimination of these groups is possible. Normals produced the most rotations in recall, brain-damaged the least, and schizophrenics an intermediate number. (19 ref) (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Tested the separate-streams hypothesis that short-term processing of verbal information is functionally separated according to presentation modality. Lists of 10 digits were presented to 32 university students such that presentation modality (auditory or visual) changed after every 2nd digit. One digit was repeated at the end of each list as a recall probe. In 1 condition (next-item), Ss were instructed to recall the item that had immediately followed the probe in the original list regardless of presentation modality. In the 2nd condition (next item in the same modality), Ss were instructed to recall the item after the probe and in the same modality. The combination of instructions and positions of the probe and target within the list created 3 main conditions: (1) The probe immediately preceded the target item and was in the same presentation modality (same-mode probe). (2) The probe immediately preceded the target but was in a different presentation modality (different-mode probe). (3) The probe was in the same modality as the target but was separated from it by 2 items in the other modality (temporally distant probe). For both auditory and visual targets, highest recall was obtained with same-mode probes, next highest with temporally distant probes, and lowest with different-mode probes. The results support the hypothesis that auditory and visual information is processed separately in short-term verbal memory. Five experiments determined the effects of hippocampal damage on timing and the memory for temporal events. Norway rats (N?=?20) were trained to discriminate between auditory signals that differed in both duration (2 or 8 sec) and rate (2 or 16 cycles/sec). After Ss acquired the discrimination, signals with intermediate durations and rates were presented. Ss then received either fimbria-fornix lesions or control operations. Postoperatively, the accuracy of duration and rate discriminations as measured by the difference limen (DL) was unaffected by the lesion, but the point of subjective equality was shifted to a shorter duration and a slower rate by the lesion. Both Ss with lesions and Ss with control operations showed cross-modal transfer of duration and rate from the auditory signals used in training to visual signals. When a 5-sec delay was imposed between the end of a signal and the opportunity to respond, lesioned Ss were selectively impaired by the addition of the delay as measured by an increase in the DL. When a peak procedure was employed, the maximum response rate of controls was approximately at the time of scheduled reinforcement (20 sec), but the maximum response rate of lesioned Ss was earlier than the time of reinforcement. When a 5-sec gap was imposed in the signal, controls summed the signal durations before and after the gap, whereas lesioned Ss showed no retention of the signal duration prior to the gap. Lesions impaired spatial working memory in an 8-arm radial maze. (51 ref) (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

45 patients (aged 16–73 yrs) with closed head injuries were followed up 6 mo postinjury with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and neuropsychological assessments. Ss were tested on visual and verbal measures of short-term memory and learning: pattern span, pattern learning, path span, path learning, digit span, and digit learning. Visual memory for patterns and paths was tested using a recall procedure. Compared with 22 controls (aged 15–70 yrs), Ss were significantly impaired on pattern span. Ss were also significantly impaired on measures of path learning and digit learning. Performance on the visual memory tasks was related to a rating of ventricular enlargement derived from MRI. It appears that diffuse damage remains of importance in predicting neuropsychological impairment in head injury. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Hypothesized that brain-damaged (bd) patients perform more poorly than non-brain-damaged (nbd) patients on both immediate and delayed memory tasks and that the difference is greater on the delayed memory tasks. 24 bd and 24 nbd psychiatric patients were administered a 15-design multiple choice version of the benton visual retention test. Results support earlier findings that memory performance is susceptible to brain damage, but questions its relevance in specifying the 2 different memory functions. Investigated in 4 studies with 101 infants 25.5–32 wks of age the ability of Ss to transfer information about shape across modalities. Ss were familiarized either orally or tactually and then tested for visual recognition memory. In Exp I, Ss failed to show evidence of cross-modal transfer on any of the tasks (1 oral–visual, 2 tactual–visual). When familiarization times were increased from 30 to 60 sec in Exp II, Ss showed evidence of transfer on both tactual–visual tasks. Exp III eliminated the 5–7 sec delay that generally intervenes between the familiarization and test phase. Ss were permitted to retain the stimulus in their hand (or mouth) during the test phase while simultaneously viewing a novel stimulus and a duplicate of the familiar stimulus. This modification resulted in successful transfer on 1 of the 2 tactual–visual tasks. Ss did not show evidence of transfer on the oral–visual problem in any of these studies, despite evidence from Exp IV that they could visually discriminate the paired stimuli used in these tasks and that they showed recognition memory when familiarization and testing were both visual. Results suggest that, although cross-modal transfer of information about shape is present among 6-mo-olds, it is a less robust phenomenon than that seen in older infants. 3 groups of Sprague-Dawley albino rats were reared in different environments from weaning to the age of 95 days. One group was in a visually enriched environment (n = 8), a 2nd group was in an auditorily enriched environment (n = 8) and a 3rd group, controls, received no enrichment (n = 16). Photic and auditory evoked potentials were recorded in unanesthetized Ss from chronically implanted epidural electrodes over the visual and auditory cortex. Ss whose enrichment included visual stimulation yielded significantly shorter latencies in their photic evoked responses recorded over the visual cortex than latencies recorded from controls or from Ss whose enrichment excluded visual stimulation. Conventional memory assessment may fail to identify memory dysfunction characterized by intact recall for a relatively brief period but rapid forgetting thereafter. This study assessed learning and retention after 30-min and 24-hr delays on auditory and visual selective reminding tests (SRTs) in right (n = 20) and left (n = 22) temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) patients and controls (n = 49). The left TLE group performed significantly worse than controls on all 3 trials of both tests. The right TLE group differed from the controls on all 3 visual SRT trials and on learning for the auditory SRT. There were no between-groups differences in rate of information lost at the 30-min versus the 24-hr delay. At the individual level, there was no difference in the percentage of patients versus controls who demonstrated isolated memory impairment at the 24-hr delay. Accelerated forgetting over 24 hr is uncommon in TLE patients. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Verbal working memory involves two major components: a phonological store that holds auditory-verbal information very briefly and an articulatory rehearsal process that allows that information to be refreshed and thus held longer in short-term memory (A. Baddeley, 1996, 2000; A. Baddeley & G. Hitch, 1974). In the current study, the authors tested two groups of patients who were chosen on the basis of their relatively focal lesions in the inferior parietal (IP) cortex or inferior frontal (IF) cortex. Patients were tested on a series of tasks that have been previously shown to tap phonological storage (span, auditory rhyming, and repetition) and articulatory rehearsal (visual rhyming and a 2-back task). As predicted, IP patients were disproportionately impaired on the span, rhyming, and repetition tasks and thus demonstrated a phonological storage deficit. IF patients, however, did not show impairment on these storage tasks but did exhibit impairment on the visual rhyming task, which requires articulatory rehearsal. These findings lend further support to the working memory model and provide evidence of the roles of IP and IF cortex in separable working memory processes. Two groups of male Long-Evans rats (N?=?42) were trained preoperatively on either a shift or a stay problem in a T-maze. Training trials consisted of 2 runs, an "information run" in which S was forced to go down 1 of the 2 arms of the T-maze, followed immediately by a "choice run" in which S could choose either arm. In the shift condition, Ss were rewarded with wet mash only for choosing the arm opposite the one they entered on the information run. In the stay condition, Ss were rewarded for entering the arm that was entered on the information run. The shift group reached 100% performance accuracy after fewer trials than the stay group. Choice accuracy in both groups declined as the delay increased and returned to 100% at the 0-sec delay. Half of the Ss in each condition then received either lesions of the posterodorsal septum—aimed at disconnecting the septum and hippocampus—or control surgery. Results indicate that deficits in maze performance by Ss with septo-hippocampal damage were not restricted to tasks that require alternation of spatial locations. This finding falsifies the notion that maze deficits reflect a spontaneous alternation deficit or changed "spatial strategy," but it supports the hypothesis of a working memory deficit in these Ss. Tested 9 deaf and 9 normal 15-27 yr olds on their ability to report letters, shapes, and nonsense figures from a tachistoscopic presentation. Deaf Ss performed worse than hearing Ss on recall of figural information, thereby supporting a linguistic coding hypothesis. However, there was no difference between the groups on position information, and letter confusions were primarily visual in both groups. Findings suggest that more attention should be given to visual short-term memory in theoretical models of memory. Formation of the icon was apparently not affected by a linguistic deficit, since effects of stimulus duration and type of viewing (continuous vs interrupted) were similar in both hearing and deaf Ss. Significant positive correlations which were found between deaf Ss' school reading scores and their tachistoscopic scores were not interpreted as support for a linguistic coding hypothesis, but rather as support for the notion that the memory skills tested in the experiment may underlie reading ability. Investigated the impact of varied imaging tasks on the use of sensory predicates by 45 right-handed White females (aged 18–40 yrs). Ss completed a background questionnaire and 2 imagery questionnaires before completing pleasant and unpleasant imagery tasks in visual, auditory, and kinaesthetic sensory modalities. Four additional tasks included having Ss report a pleasant and an unpleasant image using 5 sensory modalities, and earliest memory, and an accomplishment experience. Randomly selected images were coded by therapists. Previous studies of the neurolinguistic programming have considered sensory predicates as a trait measure, indicative of a person's preferred or primary representation system. Results of the present study demonstrate that Ss were able to vary their type of sensory predicates according to the task demands or situational context. Thus, most Ss were auditory types during auditory imaging tasks and kinaesthetic types during kinaesthetic imaging tasks. Findings are incongruent with R. Bandler and J. Grinder's (1979) conceptualization of representational systems, but they support A. Hammer's (see record 1983-26385-001) recommendations for therapists to continuously track and match clients' sensory predicates. Short-term memory for sound content and sound localization was investigated in normal subjects using the same/different comparison of two sound stimuli separated by an interval. Auditory or visual interference tasks requiring recognition or spatial judgements were introduced in the interval. Auditory interference tasks reduced memory for sound content and sound location in a specific way. Memory for sound content was significantly more reduced by auditory recognition than by auditory spatial interference task. Visual interference tasks reduced significantly memory for sound location but not for sound content. These results suggest that (i) short-term memory for sound content and that for sound location involve partially distinct processing; and (ii) auditory spatial functions are more closely linked to visual functions than auditory recognition.  相似文献

In 2 experiments with 43 male albino Holtzman rats, extensive damage to the mesencephalic reticular formation (MRF) altered long-term habituation of the acoustic startle response without disrupting short-term habituation. Ss with MRF lesions, although initially neither more nor less responsive than controls, could not attain as low a long-term asymptote of habituation as could control Ss with repeated presentations of an auditory stimulus. Changing the quality of the auditory stimulus abolished the asymptotic difference in responsiveness. With repeated presentations of the 2nd auditory stimulus, control Ss again reached a significantly lower long-term habituation asymptote than did Ss with MRF lesions. The course of long-term habituation for the 2 groups suggested a disruption of an extrinsic, inhibitory habituation process by the lesions. The effects of MRF lesions were specific to the acoustic startle response. Control Ss and those with lesions showed comparable response levels, short-term habituation, and long-term habituation of the lick suppression response. Responsiveness and habituation to tactile stimuli were comparable for the 2 groups on both lick suppression and startle response measures. A standardized questionnaire that tested the ability to recognize the names of TV programs broadcast for a single year was found to provide an efficient method of examining long-term memory in patients with brain damage of diverse common etiologies. Ss were 28 brain-damaged patients (mean age 32.14 yrs, mean education 11.59 yrs) and 28 controls matched for age and education. Contrary to the widely accepted view that remote memory is relatively invulnerable to disruption caused by cerebral disease, recognition memory was least efficient for titles of older programs in both brain-damaged and control groups. The relative degree of deficit in patients with brain lesions proved to be minimal for the most recently aired programs as compared with more remote information. Findings are discussed with respect to studies of markedly amnesic patients. Methodological problems involved in the assessment of remote memory are also considered.
